    Just wanted to say that your speech in the first minute put my mind at ease a lot. From what I can see you are a very good and patient instructor. I'm in central western NSW Australia. Otherwise I would be hiring you for sure. I have my HR licence already but have very limited experience and I still struggle. Would really like to sharpen my skills. I probably need to drive a medium rigid full time for a good year before driving the bigger trucks.

    After 14 years I’m finding I do have to relearn the 18 speed. I’ve driven lots in non synchro old 5 speed boxes but been a long time away from 18 speed. Did a walk around at truck companies last week handing in resumes and one took me for a test drive there and then. Unfortunately didn’t too well, the fundamentals are still there just rusty. So going back to do some time with a truck driver trainer over on the west side of Aus and go back once I get the cobwebs dusted off.

    Hi John, I now that you split once you get to 4th but on down shift to you split in 5th to get down to 4th or from 5th go straight to 4th the split to keep downshifting.

    • @driveit-drivertraining
      @driveit-drivertraining  10 месяцев назад

      Hi, sorry for the delay here, missed this completely.
      Only really need to split on the up shifts, when you're shifting down you normally need a full shift to get the engine braking, rather than the half shift the split provides.
      Hope that helps.
      Thanks 👍

    I can tell by the dashboard you are driving an Isuzu C or E series Giga. Hardest part for me is rev matching. I know it will take practice but I'm uncoordinated.
    I am watching as I'm a heavy vehicle tech and being able to drive the Eaton will help me to diagnose issues with the vehicle.
    More driving is going to help me? I can drive a synchro box with high/low range (ZF) no worries.
    Probably didn't help when my instructor at the time when I was getting my license was yelling at me when I was missing gears or grinding. (mostly cause I was missing the rev match)
    Still to this day, I am unclear on road speed to engine speed depending on actual gear.
    I'm a technician, but I am so unco it's almost not worth me trying to learn maybe

      Thanks for watching. Definitely keep trying, everyone struggles at times and everyone misses gears at times to. Sorry you've had an Instructor yell at you thats really bad on their part. Keep trying, it will click one day and you'll never look back.

      Hi, I think the same on the music, I’ve driven for many years and only use the clutch to select first gear and never look at the revs ( too much else to look at around me) just go by engine noise, started in log trucks, steep county no time for double clutching, just drive with the right foot, sometimes rest my left foot on the clutch to stop the engine brake coming on between changes, otherwise right foot all the way, good video anyway 👍

    • @serenaandjohn8837
      @serenaandjohn8837 2 года назад +2

      Hi, should use the double clutch and change a full gear or more, don't rely on the splitter going down hill as you'll need more than the half gear it gives. Ideally change down to the gear you need before you start going down hill, letting the engine and engine brakes hold you

      Try put the middle of yr bonnet, ie the bulldog, in line with the LEFT white fog line, then carefully glance at yr left mirror at your trailer position, ONLY when in a straight line and ONLY when safe to do so, with practice, you’ll find this helps.

    • @driveit-drivertraining
      @driveit-drivertraining  4 года назад +5

      Hi Dallas, its mainly to save the clutch brake valve from damage. The clutch brake slows the input shift on the gearbox which allows us to find a gear easy for take off. That's done on a full clutch, if we full clutch on a moving shift it will blow the clutch brake valve to pieces. The double half clutch gets the best result with no damage. Hope that helps, John@driveit

    • @driveit-drivertraining

      Hi, you have crawl and reverse, then the standard H pattern, 1, 2, 3 and 4 low range, they can all be split. Then high range 5,6,7 and 8, they can be split to. So basically its 16 gears plus crawl and reverse. Don't worry to much about splitting while getting used to it though..next video will cover that in more detail

      Trucks have that much torque these days you only need half the gears and skip shift. Just matching the gear to engine revs these days needs a few runs around the block first. But your right you never forget.
