So funny story... My husband set the timer on our warming plate to PM instead of AM so we had to eat a room temperature lunch! But none of us minded :) We were happy to enjoy the quiet family meal :) We spent the day at home reading books (torah insights, Little House on the Prairie, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), playing games together (I taught the kids how to play a marbles game called plums plus we played a lot of Guess Who), and just in general hanging out. It was a perfect day and just what we needed :)
Chana, my friend's son had many food allergies, one of them being corn. During Passover he was able to eat ketchup and he was so excited! My friend contacted the company and told them of the allergy and they sent her a whole case of ketchup for free. Try that with the crumbs you like so much!

Hey Chana, thanks so much for taking us along on your cooking for shaboss. I basically sat down with a coffee ☕️ and some popcorn 🍿 to watch your video, I love your channel and your upbeat vibes 😘. Just wanted to share that I always bake my potato kugel on 450f reason being I blend all the ingredients at once in my blender so I don’t want the potatoes to brown by placing the kugel in preheated oven it gets a nice crust on top which seals it. And my kugel is nice and white inside. After it gets the nice brown on top I lower the temp to 400 for remainder of the hour 👋🏼
Hello Miriam! Thank you so much for your kind words :) I’m so happy you’re enjoying my channel!!! And thanks for sharing how you do your kugel, sounds so simple! Baking at 400 worked out just fine for us, maybe I’ll try 450 for the crispy top! I definitely don’t get that. How long do you bake it for?
My recipe is a blender full of diced potatoes, 4 eggs, small onion, 1/2 cup oil, 1teaspoon salt, a shake of pepper. I blend it all and bake it for 1 hour.
The potato dish looked so good! I'm not Jewish, and had never seen that recipe before. I love your channel by the way. I learn so much! Tomorrow is my (39th) birthday and I may try to make it to go with my birthday dinner!

For example this week in Anchorage, Shabbat candle lighting is at about 3:30 in the afternoon :) and havdalah is at about 5:10 the next day.
Chana can you do a blog just on your husbands salads? They all look so beyond incredible I would love to see some thing that would help us make them thank you.

Hello Chana! Lovely video, as always. All this food made me hungry 😂 I do not keep kosher, but I always check my salad, broccoli, cauliflower, etc for critters too. I agree with other commenters - next time you're in the store that sells those bread crumbs, I'd suggest asking if they would consider a special order for your family. As someone with allergies, I've done this a few times. They may say they can't (& that's ok), they may say "sure" or they may say "next time we have a shipment from that supplier, we will". Once I was told there was a wholesale min order & since I wouldn't have been able to buy &use that much of the product, the store posted an add on their info board "Potential order of nut- and grain-free xxx, if you're interested, pls talk to any store employee". There were many interested ppl & the store put in the special order for all of us within a few days. If they cannot order it for you, they may know of a different company/store/source, which could help you out.
Chana, I wanted to give you the update on the fried fish story😃. So we had it, and it was a BOMB! 😄 I bought cod. Not sure if someone already said, but if those are the Jason breadcrumb brand I am 99% sure you can order them in like from Walmart and Amazon and probably other places too. It stinks when there is really good gluten free stuff but then it is seasonal!
There is a simple way not to cry when you cut onions. Light a match, then blow it out. Hold the extinguished match between your two front teeth. The red end of the match absorbs the sulfuric compounds before they can reach your eyes.
Everything looks amazing. Just a little tip if you want chicken strips even better use dairy-free yogurt (like soy base plain yogurt) instead of the free milk and it gives an amazing coating. As well I'm adding a couple of tablespoons of sesame seeds into the breadcrumbs or gluten-free bread crumbs makes it sooo good too. If you want really crispy once use rice flour without any bread crumbs. have a great week!
@@jaroffireflies You're so welcome! My favorite is sesame seeds, oregano, a bit of chili and garlic powder salt, and pepper mixed with regular rice flour. The liquid soy yogurt with egg mixture. So first to plain rice flour, then to yogurt, and then to flavored flour. I even made in an air fryer and it was crisp and good.
I've been playing tabletop RPGs for... over twenty years now - I was still playing my first character when my husband and I started dating. Now our nephew is totally into D&D, and our four year old niece really, really wants to play with her big brother. It's a blast, even if we have to constantly remind Nephew that he doesn't automatically go first just because he has point!
Another wonderful video! I'm not Jewish and am very interested so have two questions. Do you recognize Christmas as a family and do anything (I know that Christmas is a Christian holiday and not Jewish but am curious if you do anything)? I've also noticed that you don't wear a wedding ring - is that a religious observance or personal preference? Sorry if these questions are too personal - you're just so open and willing to share about your beliefs. Thank you!
Hello Jennifer! Thanks for your kind words :) to answer your questions… No, we don’t do anything for Christmas. It’s not our holiday and we don’t celebrate it or commemorate it or anything like that. I tend not to wear jewelry because it’s no practical for my lifestyle:)
@@jaroffireflies thank you so much for your responses! I love learning from you, especially because I'm not a mother nor Jewish, so find your channel so interesting and insightful. Thank you and best wishes!
Ummmm.... Old farm girl.. 2T salt in a half gallon of water in a bowl, separate the florets and drop them in the salted water. Any bugs will rapidly vacate. This works if you choose to use baking soda as well. Just let the broccoli soak in the water for 10 to 15 minutes.
Hi. Love your channel. I don’t know anyone Jewish so your channel is so interesting. One question: why do people use “loopholes” for things on Shabbat (ex: timers for lights, pre-heated water, etc.)? I understand not watching TV, but if other things are still being used, just passively, then what is the purpose? (Hope that didn’t sound rude, just genuinely curious).
My family would love that meal! I need to get motivated and figure out what we are having for supper tonight. Too funny that is okay to keep the conversation about not keeping another conversation in the video. Kids are so funny. That roasted broccoli looks amazing
You always have such yummy looking dishes. I wish I could eat cilantro and eggplant without migraines or not being able to get out of bed for 2 days. Trying the carrot muffins I think though.
I've had potato kugel and it's delicious. I love watching you cook. You handle the type1 diabetes and celiac with great ease. I know that many Jewish couples have tests for genetic conditions, prior to marrying. Celiac is one. Have you had any such testing? I know this from my many South African Jewish friends.
We didn’t have any genetic testing done before marriage because that’s more of an Ashkenaz issue and my husband is Sephardi and I am a convert, so it’s not really an issue for us :)
@@dawnbaker9274 Due to close knit ties in the Ashkenazi Jewish community, there are a lot of people who have ended up as carriers for certain genetic illnesses. Tay-sachs is probably the most well-known. Because children can develop these very serious and sometimes fatal illnesses if both parents are carriers a lot of Jews do pre-marriage or pre-conception genetic testing to ensure they are not both carriers. For example, I am a carrier for Gauchers, but my husband is not.
I love that your kids like to play DnD. For my youngest's junior year project (I homeschooled him), he wrote and DM'd his own campaign. It was a lot of fun!
Helpful tip : wet a paper towel and lay on your cutting board by the onions as you are shredding/cutting them. For whatever reason, it works and no more tears!
Thanks for your interesting videos. Your Shabbos lunch looks very tasty, but that would be more of a Friday night meal for us. Here in Australia your Apple 'Kugel' would be called Apple Crumble. To us Apple Kugel is made by mixing apple in a batter, and baking it. I also add cinnamon to mine. Shabbos lunch here is traditionally cholent. Most people use beans in their cholent, but I prefer potatoes, an onion, garlic, barley, kishke, and a couple of large lamb chops. I make mine in a crock pot, and by lunchtime, it's absolutely delicious. Afterwards I would generally serve cold cuts and salads, favourites being Israeli salad, tabbouli, potato salad, and a sliced cucumber, green pepper and onion salad, in vinegar. Dessert is usually cake, or apple and passionfruit compote, served with black tea.
Your Shabbat lunch sounds delicious! We typically serve coolant here as well, but I tend to like doing something a little different if I am doing all the cooking :)
Hi Chana, I love broccoli, I do buy it frozen. Have you tried brussel sprouts? Because of the bugs issue I buy them frozen as well. Like you, I use olive oil, kosher salt and black pepper. on both the brussel sprouts and broccoli. Yum! Have a Shavu'a Tov.
Shavua Tov Chana! Your food looks delicious! I was wondering if your carrot muffins can be made with regular flour? Also, do you have a light box to check vegetables? It makes romaine lettuce and broccoli much easier to check. Your son has gotten so big! Enjoy your week. Be well.
Hi Jackie! This recipe was developed by Bob Red Mill specifically to be gluten free so I’m not sure how it would translate to regular flour. I wouldn’t be able to try that because of our celiac safe kitchen, but please let me know if you do!
I found sauerkraut for New Year's Day. It's a German tradition. We usually have some meat with it. Like sausage. My mom will get the vegan kind. I got the regular. I got the Kroger sauerkraut brand, but I got two cans.
I am definitely going to roast broccoli next time I serve it. It is not a favorite of ours, so hopefully roasting it will improve the taste! The potato Kugel made my mouth water! I love anything potato, one of my favorite veggies. Did you ever try it with shredded carrots in addition to the onion? The carrot adds a little sweetness. As always a pleasure to watch and learn.....
Please let me know how you enjoy the broccoli! I’m not sure I’d enjoy it any other way now lol! I’ve never thought of adding carrots to the kugel! What a creative addition! I have made a veggie kugel with carrots and apples and something else I can’t remember… it’s been a while lol
Hi Channa, the potato kuguel remind me the knishes, here in Israel no one know knishes😂, that was my disappointing with the aliah, maybe needed to made aliah to Broklyn o Manhattan🤣🙃😂
I have been playing Dungeons & Dragons since I was 13. So for almost 30 years! It's so much fun and a great activity for kids and adults alike to be creative and problem solve. Gamer for life! :)
I wish I had played before now :) But better late than never! We are having a blast with it :) And yes I love the social skills and reasoning skills etc that this game teaches :)
I don't know if this would help you or not, but when we grow broccoli in the garden, we bring it in after we cut it off the plant and soak it in a sink full of cold water to which we add salt. I'm not sure how much salt - I'm guessing a couple tablespoons. Let the broccoli soak in the salted water for 15 minutes or so - and if there are critters, they will try to escape the broccoli and end up in the water. And then I always rinse the broccoli in fresh water.
@@jaroffireflies Broccoli is mostly a cool-weather crop, so I'm not sure what the planting time for it would be in Texas. There are some varieties that do better in the heat; if you're interested, check with your garden stores or online with maybe the Burpee seed catalog company. My parents didn't seem to have any trouble growing it, but I tried it when Iived in another part of Ohio and I think every aphid and cabbage worm in six counties found my three plants. It was so sad!
You have been very productive! Everything looks yummy! Really enjoy any kind of kugel and, unlike many, I love broccoli. Too bad about the AM/PM mix up but things happen😊
Luckily I pulled the food out of the fridge early enough that it was basically room temperature and it tasted great :) I did feel super productive that Friday :) Looking forward to not doing it again for a while though lolol
Oh my Chana that meal looks amazing! I totally want someone to cook that exact meal for me to eat lol! 🤣 Thank you for sharing these recipes. I will let you know how mine turns out. Much love and hugs to you and the family-Debbie💜💜
Hi Debbie!!! It was a delicious meal! To me this is basically a perfect Shabbat lunch :) well maybe to be perfect I would add chocolate chip cookies for dessert ;)
I’ve been curious to ask, since you grew up Catholic, do you ever miss Christmas? When you first converted was it kind of a culture shock to go oh wait a minute I don’t celebrate Christmas anymore. Do the kids still good Christmas gift from the grandparents? Also I would love a video where you outlined the difference between orthodox, conservative, and reform Judaism! Amazing videos as always!
Hello! I don’t miss Christmas. Our life is so full with our other holidays that I don’t miss it at all :) my family and I do not exchange gifts on any holidays, we just focus on birthdays. Thanks for the video suggestion!
You really have such a relaxed vibe while you cook even when your kids are around , I really am learning so much from you , so thank you for sharing . Your cooking looks delicious . Hv a good week .
Really pray about the praying of Dungens and Dragons. Upon reflection our family did not see any benefit in this dark game. This comment is respectfully submitted to you. I really enjoy your channel.
You never really get how hard it must be to film sometimes with kids. You assume they're perfectly quiet and out of the way all the time. The outtakes at the end really help me see the reality lol.
Oh noooooooo lol they are usually all over the place which is why I do a lot of voice overs, they are usually playing / talking / ect right there in the room :)
Hi Chana! Quick question: you mentioned the apple kugel is in fact an apple crisp but to eat it for Shabbat it’s a kugel … is it religious requirement to have specifically Jewish foods for meals or more of a cultural practice you follow? Could you observe Shabbat with lasagne?
Hello! We can eat anything on Shabbat, but it’s traditional to eat certain foods and you’d for sure want something that reheats well. It’s also tradition to eat something special that you wouldn’t necessarily have during the week.
Looks good. All the food. Channah how can you make broccoli or the potato kugel without black or white pepper??????never heard of that!! But anyway all looks delic..
Thank you, Chana, for another relaxing video watching you care for your family. I love watching you cook and teaching your children to cook. Because you are also a gardener, you might think of saving your fruit/veg remnants for the corner of your backyard. In a couple of years, you will have "black gold" as my Dad called it while teaching us to garden as children. Composting is easy and creates a rich black soil loaded with nutrients. So worth it!
So glad you enjoyed! I did compost for a while but unfortunately all it did was attract rats and I never got any compost. I decided it wasn’t worth it sadly :(
Hi Chana: I love kugel, also the noodle kind...yum! I first had it many years ago, when my Jewish friend's grandmother invited me to Shabbat dinner. Babaganoush is wonderful; I adore eggplant. 🤗Gosh, I'm such a foodie, aren't I? TFS; looking forward to your next upload. Many blessings to all of you. Rosemarie 💖
I've Been canning for 35+ years. PLEASE try, as an experiment, soaking the fresh strawberries("whole, fresh, not frozen, do not cut them now) in a salt solution of about 25% to 30%. Strain it into a glass bowl and check it out! should get rid of all insects! Of course rinse, although a LITTLE salt will enhance the flavor. Grow your own strawberries, they're easy, and you can control the insect population. There are MANY ways! Can home canning be kosher?
I have also been playing D&D and being a DM. My favorite starter adventures are the boxed ones called: Starter Set & Essentials Kit. For fun, I actually combined the adventures to make it last longer. Maybe these could be helpful to you too! -Tiffiany, from NorCal. = )
Question Q&A for next time Love your channel, Love you! 1. If you make your own salsa (or other food) from ingredients grown in your garden is that kosher? Is all home grown produce kosher (provided no bugs)? 2. If you grow your own beef/ chicken/rabbits/goat are those meat products kosher? If not could you get them certified kosher?
Ok so 1) yes absolutely! I’ve done it many times :) and 2) yes but maybe. An animal has to be slaughtered a certain way and it would need to be checked after. I don’t know all the details of it but I could hire someone to do it.
I'm Greek Orthodox and it's so inspiring to see a young religious family who are dedicated to passing down tradition and faith. Our religion s are different but the same too. Keeping true to the origins of our beliefs unchanged from the beginning. Just beautiful.

There is a simple way not to cry when you cut onions. Light a match, then blow it out. Hold the extinguished match between your two front teeth. The red end of the match absorbs the sulfuric compounds before they can reach your eyes.
Thanks for the tip
Looks delicious!!
Thank you!
Oh I never would have thought of that! Thanks for the tip!
@@VictoriaPaikin sounds delicious!
Lol I love that! Especially about your nephew :)
@@jenniferhwaddington thank you for your kind words :) I’m so very glad you’re here!
Ummmm.... Old farm girl.. 2T salt in a half gallon of water in a bowl, separate the florets and drop them in the salted water. Any bugs will rapidly vacate. This works if you choose to use baking soda as well. Just let the broccoli soak in the water for 10 to 15 minutes.
Awesome thank you!
So glad you’re enjoying! I wouldn’t call them loopholes, they are perfectly permissible ways to do things on Shabbat :)
My family would love that meal! I need to get motivated and figure out what we are having for supper tonight. Too funny that is okay to keep the conversation about not keeping another conversation in the video. Kids are so funny. That roasted broccoli looks amazing
Lol he is so fun to chat with!
You always have such yummy looking dishes. I wish I could eat cilantro and eggplant without migraines or not being able to get out of bed for 2 days. Trying the carrot muffins I think though.
The carrot muffins are really delicious
I've had potato kugel and it's delicious. I love watching you cook. You handle the type1 diabetes and celiac with great ease. I know that many Jewish couples have tests for genetic conditions, prior to marrying. Celiac is one. Have you had any such testing? I know this from my many South African Jewish friends.
We didn’t have any genetic testing done before marriage because that’s more of an Ashkenaz issue and my husband is Sephardi and I am a convert, so it’s not really an issue for us :)
@@jaroffireflies why would this testing be needed? Sorry. Not Jewish so a bit confused.
@@jaroffireflies why would this testing be needed? Sorry. Not Jewish so a bit confused.
@@doronvergun5488 thank you Doron!
I love that your kids like to play DnD. For my youngest's junior year project (I homeschooled him), he wrote and DM'd his own campaign. It was a lot of fun!
Wow that’s so cool!
Helpful tip : wet a paper towel and lay on your cutting board by the onions as you are shredding/cutting them. For whatever reason, it works and no more tears!
Thanks for the tip!
Hi Chana. I love your energy!
Thank you so much 😊
Aren't our hands such a miracle of engineering? Watching your hands work, reminded me what a wonderful Creator we have and how much He loves us.
Wow Susan I love that!
You know I’ve never been big into brussel sprouts. I never had them growing up so it’s just never been a thought in my head to serve them now :)
I love to watch your videos....I'm from Europe, I'm a Ashkenazi Jew but I didn't grow up in a jewish religious family. Thank u for sharing
So glad you’re here Patrice! Thanks for watching :)
Your food looks so good 😊 I have been very busy getting ready for Christmas. I love watching your videos. They are always calming for me.
Thank you Jenelle 💖 I’m so glad you’re here
Shavua Tov Chana!
Lunch looked delicious and such a nice variety of food, made me hungry 🤗
So glad you enjoyed Anne!
I found sauerkraut for New Year's Day. It's a German tradition. We usually have some meat with it. Like sausage. My mom will get the vegan kind. I got the regular. I got the Kroger sauerkraut brand, but I got two cans.
So fun! I love sauerkraut. I like it on toast with eggs :)
Very similar!
Yum you got me in the mood to make kugel for this Shabbat thanks for the push I needed!
Yay! Enjoy it!
Thanks for the tips! Is broccoli easy to grow? I’ve never tried
@@sandrawallace1001 thanks for the tips! I’ll look into it locally. What a bummer about the aphids!!!
I am so looking forward to the salad video. I have made a couple of your recipes and have enjoyed them. Blessings to you and your family.
I’m looking forward to sharing them with you!!!
You can just toast your own bread you make & make into crumbs.
That's what I have started doing now :) I am using leftover slices of my homemade bread :) The kids love it better!
You really have such a relaxed vibe while you cook even when your kids are around , I really am learning so much from you , so thank you for sharing . Your cooking looks delicious . Hv a good week .
Thank you so much! Hope you have a lovely week as well Leah!
Do you heat the food in the microwave on Shabbat?

Ohhh please film the salad recipes! Love the out takes at the end :)
We will definitely film the salad recipes :) It’s just a question of when 💖
You never really get how hard it must be to film sometimes with kids.
I like your RUclips videos
Thanks Rachel!
Looks good. All the food. Channah how can you make broccoli or the potato kugel without black or white pepper??????never heard of that!! But anyway all looks delic..
Lol glad you enjoyed :) As for the pepper, I’m personally just not a fan. But no guest has ever complained 😁

Lol sorry Mary! It was really good though:)
Rosemarie 💖
Food is a wonderful thing! Thank you for your kind words :) Always pleasure to read your comments :)
hi, chana. when you use a sweetener in your baked goods do you use real sugar or a substitute for your child who has diabetes? cheers!
Home canning is absolutely kosher! I pressure and water bath can, I absolutely love it! Love it when I *meet* other canners!!!
May God bless you and your family your food looks delicious God bless
I have also been playing D&D and being a DM. My favorite starter adventures are the boxed ones called: Starter Set & Essentials Kit. For fun, I actually combined the adventures to make it last longer. Maybe these could be helpful to you too! -Tiffiany, from NorCal. = )
Awesome thanks so much Tiffany!!! I don’t have the starter set but I’ll see if our store has it!
Question Q&A for next time
Love your channel, Love you!
I love your channel
Thank you Kate 💖😊
Are you ethnically Jewish or just a convert?
Salt also works with Broccoli, REALLY well. Vinegar also is good for strawberries. My grandfather used to eat strawberries wit sugar and vinegar.
Awesome thank you!
