I have been stretching every night for the last 30 years. I’m 63 now. I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease in my L5-S1, L4-L5, & L3-L4 back in my 30’s and I’ve avoided back surgery for 30 years. My friends had surgery, and re-surgery, & re-surgery, and are still not in the shape that I am. Stretching saved me.

I had back pain for decades. Going to the chiropractor never helped.
Daily stretching and stretching yoga poses helped to loosen my back tension and relieve my pain.
I also use a foam roller to help release tension in my back muscles, tendons and ligaments.
After doing this for several months, gaining more movement and less pain, I felt a release in my lower spine similar to going to a chiropractor and hearing the gas release in the joints. Once it released my back pain went away and has never come back after 2 years. I still do light stretching and yoga stretching poses every morning and my flexibility has never been better. Getting off the floor is so much easier and less painful. Flexibility is key.

I warm up in sauna for 15 mins before yoga and again 15 mins after. The benefits of yoga is just amazing. Flexibility allows me to climb up and down, do housework and yard work easily. I can stand on one leg and tie shoe lace. Everything you do takes less effort because of good balance. Back pain have not come back for 25+ years. By the way, I’m almost 70.

Good topic! I've been a runner, all my life and some people stretch before running, and some no, some say, it's better to stretch after. I've settled into a 10 minute stretching session in the mornings. Doing sun salutations, and some other yoga. It seems to wake me up. now after watching this video, I feel Healthier!

I was suffering from sciatica and back issues for years, and during pandemic I was spending alot of time in front of TV in the evening. I started to do easy floor stretching (nothing else) just like 5~10 mins everyday while watching netflix. Overtime it became a habit and my sciatic and back pain went away. I also notice I was sleeping better but I was surprised of feeling overall well being. So even it you just take 2 mins to stretch, as long as you do it consistently, it is the easiest and best thing to better well being.

Its important to start with some low-intensity activity to create some heat before stretching, particularly if its cold out and you're preparing to go on a run, play basketball or tennis. Our blood flow changes dramatically in the legs and arms and a low-intensity warmup helps prevent muscle injury from stretching without adequate bloodflow. A low-intensity warmup should be the first step in any athletic activity.

As a physical therapist, I always tell my patients that stretching is as essential as strengthening for muscles because it allows the muscle to move through full range of motion and allows the joint to work with proper body mechanics. This supports joints and allows you to move with the least amount of damage. All of this contributes to a healthier body.

Great video. I LOVE stretching. If I'm not feeling up to doing something vigorous, I can stretch at home and it relieves stress, improves flexibility, gets the blood flowing, improves mood, improves posture... I used to dance a lot and stretching was a huge part of that. It feels SO good to stretch. I think yoga is basically stretching at its core but I agree that there is more to it. Holding a stretch for a decent length of time, like at least 10 secs or so, really helps to get the most out of it. Thx for talking about one of my favorite things!

I do yoga 5 days a week for at least 20 - 30 min. per session. I supplement with rotating short sessions ( for seniors) of aerobics, strength training and Pilates. Once a week I do a 2-2.5 hour walk - but yoga is my mainstay. I find it hard work, because it also involves a lot of balancing and strength training and in a few years I will turn 80, but I feel terrific after every session - in fact, I feel terrific most of the time. Yep - Yoga is also a great mood enhancer.
My only problem is a sore knee, but thankfully you posted a video on which injections will help (thank you) so I feel I am OK for the rest of my life.

A few years back I was always waking up with lower back pain. I thought I should try yoga. I was 60 at the time. I looked for yoga videos that would come with Amazon prime. I found beginning yoga for the back by Jane Fonda. Simple 10 minute stretches and the pain was gone in 3 days. Since then I do stretches about 5 days a week for 30 minutes at a time. It feels good, you don't feel so stiff. Just basic moves nothing fancy. Makes a great difference.

Good advise. I've always been a runner for decades; although I had a long period after having meniscus surgery on my left knee surgery in 2016 when I completely stopping running, not resuming it off and on in 2018 , 2021 until just recently in 2023. I guess I was just mentally afraid. So I just do lite jogging 3 or 4 days weekly for an hour each time. I know that I should probably stretch before running which I do not, I should. I will stretch for five minutes after running and walk for another 20 minutes. Stretching is important to prevent hamstring soreness that could last for weeks and cause you horrible fatigue. So do your stretching each day. Running several times weekly will always help lower your blood pressure, reduce your LDL cholesterol, lose the belly fat, and improve your sleep.

Like you said, any activity is better than complete inactivity. As a martial artist; anything that pushes myself I call it a workout, anything that don't, I call it an exercise.
My advice is to do everything slow & comfortably for yourself. Not every exercise has to be strenuous, it may increase your stress hormone, cortisol.
For example, when I work on the heavy bag. I do it slow & comfortable like a warmup. I increase the intensity only when I feel the heat in my arms. But the warmup portion is more than sufficient for an exercise. It would be unbearable if I forces myself to be uncomfortable by going hard at the very beginning with no warmup.

Docs: Have to slightly disagree with you about yoga. The word yoga means to unite and in the West, it has been bastardized as a term to merely mean physical exercise! (Not that there is anything wrong with that.) But there is yoga for sleep which is definitely not a difficult physical exercise and armchair yoga for seniors who are not "at the top of their game" and a few more which do not require the agility of a gazelle. Yoga was originally meant to unite the body with the mind and prepare it for meditation, and unfortunately when it became a trend, most people forgot about the latter. (But you DID just remind me I forgot to stretch prior to dancing today..lol..Thank you!)

So many people who do strength training have injuries due to not being properly warmed up. Athletes of all types (Football, Baseball, Tennis, etc) can be seen warming up before the game. Why anyone would walk into a gym and hit weights cold is beyond me. I know people do it and it probably works for them. I would be so sore if I didn’t warm up and stretch prior to my workout.

I never paid much mind to stretching until I started having back pain. I have a work injury that led to an MRI which revealed severe lumbar stenosis. The pain was so bad that professional PT did nothing to relieve it. I did a bunch of research online and found a lot of helpful info, including helpful stretches for back pain. I've been doing full body stretching for a year and, even tho I still have (much less) back pain, I feel great otherwise. I'm amazed by the huge reduction in pain by just doing physical activity and using a few high quality supplements, primarily amino acids and B vitamins. I wish I'd learned about stretching years ago because I feel younger and more vibrant than I did even before my back injury.
