I recently reviewed the new Apple Watch Series 8, an incredible feature packed watch, however with its release the previous Apple Watch Series 7 just became more affordable. If you are looking to upgrade your older Apple Watch Series 3, 4 or SE, the question is should you buy the latest Apple Watch Series 8 or is it worth saving some cash and getting the Apple Watch Series 7 instead? To answer this, today we’ll look at the differences and crucially the similarities between the Series 8 and Series 7 to find out which is the better buy! Apple sells Series 8 for $399, 41mm version I have here. Apple no longer sell Series 7 but on Amazon, eBay, I found 41mm version for around $300. $100 less, significant price saving. But the question is, what do you sacrifice for the $100 in features? Key differences between the Series 8 and Series 7. Brighter always-on display. Noticeable difference in day to day, however max brightness is the same. Adds temperature sensors. Crash detection. Faster S8 chip on Series 8 compared to S7 chip on Series 7. Speed differences minimal in day to day use, but does mean 1-2 more years of software support and new features down the road, getting 5-6 years, vs 4-5 years. This makes the Series 8 a better long term investment. Perhaps more important than the differences between the Series 8 and Series 7 are what these watches have in common. From the outside, practically identical, same dimensions, same midnight colour. Most importantly, both have always on display. My favourite feature of the Series 7 and 8 Apple Watch and is a key reason to choose these models over the SE or SE 2 which does not have an always on display. 1mm larger compared to SE, 41mm vs 40mm, 45mm vs 44mm. 1mm goes a long way on display of this size. Thinner curved bezels looks more modern, content literarily flows on and off the display. Watch OS 9 features, including low power mode, get even more battery. Speaking of battery, I see no difference, both last all-day. Both get fast charging, 80% in around 30 mins. On screen keyboard to respond to messages. 50m water resistant. Health features: ECG, Blood Oxygen, 24h heart rate monitoring. The most important Apple Watch features, you will find both on the Series 8 as well as on the Series 7. For $100 less, the Apple Watch Series 7 is an incredible value watch. In fact I consider it to be a better value watch compared to the Series 8 as per dollar you get more watch!

In my area, the price difference is $120 between the 45mm series 7 & 8. I definitely recommend the series 7 💯
Just upgraded from an SE 1st Gen to the Series 8. Where I'm from, there wasnt that much of a price jump from the S7 to the S8 so i just decided to get the newer one. I love how much darker the Midnight is!
Upgraded to the Apple Watch Series 8 from the first gen SE and to me it was a big upgrade. Having more health features such as the ECG and Blood Oxygen is great as well as the AOD. I also see improvement in battery life. So far I’m loving it.
I’m an athlete I go very hard I sprint jump high and fast and do powerful movement I don’t do cardio would those features apply to me gingy? Or should I just go with the 7 my hands and fingers are big if that’s significant?

The processor on the S8 is simply a rebranded S6. Apple has not announced a performance bump since the S6. This is a plus for those looking to purchase an older model.
Currently deciding which apple watch to get, to help manage my anxiety by tracking my heart rate. The ECG is definitely my favourite feature on the watch!

Thanks for this review! In this part of Europe the difference between 7 and 8 is 100 euros (7 retailing for 420 and 8 for 520). Hence after watching your video the decision was made in favor of the 7 🙂

I got my series 7 a couple weeks before the series 8 launched. I'm still really happy and satisfied with my 7. I dont think I'll really need the temperature sensing because I dont really wear my Apple Watch frequently. great video as always dion!

I have a family history of heart conditions, so I love that it can take ECGs and send abnormal heart beat alerts. I don’t suspect I have anything to worry about, but with my family history, those features would just be amazing peace of mind.

I’ve been looking for reviews on these watches based on the same reasons and almost no one speaks in-depth about these features. Wasn’t sure how accurate those features are. I want to track blood, oxygen and heart. I heard it tracks your temperature to let you know if your getting sick from a reviewer but didn’t hear much else on the topic
Edit: further into the video he explained both watches 7&8 has those features so that helped
S7 and S8 actually are same to S6 chip, all based on A13 chip.

I bought the series 7 last year and I’m pretty satisfied with it so I won’t upgrade this year. But definitely the temperature sensor is a great addition

S7 and S8 are literally the same chips except for the required hardware on the chip to support the thermometer and crash detection. The performance will be the exact same since the processor part of the SoC is literally the same.

I love my 6, but my son got hold of it one day and planted a few deep and ugly scratches on the display, which are impossible to ignore. I’m toying with the idea of getting the 7, simply as it won’t be as expensive as the 8.

Fall protection yes, crash protection is only on the 8
I was in The hospital hooked up to a heart monitor. My 7 was spot on with there machine
I’ve still got a 4 cellular version. I think the only reason I’d switch is for the always in and better performance chip.

According to my past experience, it's very important to buy technologies as newer as possible. I bought iPhone SE 2020 in 2021 and unfortunately I had issues with LTE during my trip to SF in 2022. 5G has much better coverage in SF than LTE. So, in case of Apple Watch 8, the chip series 8 should be supported much longer.
In terms of support, the S6, S7, and S8 all have the same processor, so I’d expect there would be no difference in that.
It’s an annual difference, so expect a year of additional support, not years. Not sure where that math is coming from

Does the fast charger come with both 7 and 8 ?
They are capable of fast charging, but you still have to bring your own power brick (which should be according to Apple 18 Watt or above)
The price good, but the safety feature is a game changer, along with the new Chip makes the difference for me....
What do you think about the default watch face in series 7 vs 8? I think the default watch face is way better in series 7 than series 8. I’m not sure if I can get similar watch face on series 8😢 because the default watch face of series 8 sucks

@amirulwafi07 This is not a feature, but what can I say this thing is only available on apple watch which is the long-term usage. I've seen someone is still using the series 3 and 4 from 2017 and 2018 till this day which is quite long and I am really amazed they are still working great. Additionally, the series 4 which was from 2018 along with the iPhone xr and xs still receives a major update. This is one of the reason why I am attracted to the apple watch as my future and my next smartwatch. It is also easy to consider which model is suitable for me as a student, so I might go for the SE2 as I don't really use all the additional feature in series 8 and Ultra for example the temperature sensing, ecg and blood oxygen, U1 ultra wideband and fast charging features. Thinking about it, why do I need all those as a student?

The series 8 literally only has 2 new features: crash detection and temperature sensing. I don't think it's worth $100 more, the series 7 is also a way better value than the SE. Otherwise, if you have a lot of cash, you could go for the Ultra.

I bought the stainless steel series 7 for €600, the series 8 is €900 and I can't find it under €800. Beeing a male and having an iPhone 14 Pro, I thought the temperature sensor and the crash detector were not worth the price difference to me. I didn't know the series 8 has a brighter "always on display" tho, but I think I'll be fine, probably the series 7 has better battery life because of this.
he did say that the max brightness is the same on both, so I assume it's a software iOS feature that limits the brightness, hmmmm.
Still happy with it? I wanna wait for sale of the stainless steel series 8, since the series 9 is about to release. Hopefully I can get the series 8 for €600 too!! But something tells me I’d have to wait for that quite a while
