This was one of my favorite arcs of DBZ which is why i was shocked to learn as a kid that it wasnt cannon. Just a creative and awesome storyline and battle. It seems like these days people just want to defame classic DBZ like it wasnt as good as it was.
The garlic junior saga was before namek, while goku was with king kai, after saiyan saga.
Then how does Vegeta have the armor he got on namek?
I thought that, but in this video, there's a battle with post namek piccolo, and what I remember is of the post names stuff, I'm so confused, was there 2 arcs?

Also garlic Jr is canon to the anime just not the manga. I wish fans stop saying non canon and just say anime only. Many things that happen in the anime are done differently in the manga especially with DBS

Damn i didnt know someone else would feel this way. I loved the Garlic Jr saga. One of my favs and a good breathing arc after freiza. all the filler in DBZ up to the majin buu saga was so good.

I always loved this arc I love that it focuses on other characters that aren’t Goku
Same. It actually raises the stakes a little bit considering that these remaining Z-Fighters have to defeat a legitimately un-killable villain without being able to feasibly wait for Goku. Having the trio of Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo actually being THE main protagonists for a season was a cool payoff for all the necessary losses they had to endure in the Frieza Saga. Not to mention Gohan's character development works even better with the inclusion of this arc, and it's pretty good foreshadowing too for what would come later.
And it has actual stakes, unlike the complete waste of everyone's time that was the Otherworld Tournament Saga.
I honestly really like DBZ filler, strangely its the part I remember the most and most fondly, probably because it made the characters more "human"
I distinctly remember watching these episodes on Toonami as a kid, and the episode I always thought about after watching it was when Gohan straight up killed two members of Garlic Jr's minions in the same episode. And I always thought "holy shit Gohan is the GOAT".

Your definition of filler and take on canon are what the larger anime community NEEDS to know and hear. Too often I hear people insisting everything they don’t like is filler because it sounds bad or flip flop between what’s considered canon because of their own likes and dislikes.
@@RandoLePerson Thanks for proving my point. Filler is stuff added to the anime that isn’t in the manga, that’s it. It doesn’t matter whether it fits your arbitrary definition of what is “good,” that’s not what determines whether something is filler.
That’s the problem. There have literally been cannon manga references to slice of life sceens in the show. The driving test was referenced in a manga cannon episode.

I’m pretty sure almost everyone agrees that anything that wasn’t part of the original source material is canon. It’s not about whether people like it or not.
Filler has no bearing in, and doesn’t exist in the same timeline as the actual canon events.
@@Yumemaru. Most people define “filler” as “anything that doesn’t move the ‘main story’ along.” For instance, a lot of people think anything unrelated to Kira in Part 4 of Jojo is “filler”
It's hilarious that Krillin named his daughter Marron but Toriyama says it was a coincidence. I jus headcannon Krillin had a part in him that couldn't truly get over his filler ex lol.

You're not alone in that. While watching the Buu arc when I was 12 I thought Krillin named his daughter after his ex.
Marron is actually french for “Chestnut” since Kuririn’s name pun is a portmanteau of the japanese word “kuri” and “lin” from Shaolin monk. But yeah, it does sound pretty dead on….
I like how DBZA used this as an In Joke in their What-If DBZA Season 4 videos :)
I actually somewhat enjoyed the Garlic Jr mini-sage in of itself: some new concepts, characters that normally do not get the spotlight being at the center of the stage, Krilin's hot Bulma-look-alike girlfriend...
My only issue really was that, as someone who was not aware of the Dead Zone movie (I don't think it had ever been released in my home country at that point), I was extremely puzzled by those flashbacks that I was sure I had never seen before and I could not pinpoint anywhere in the story.
For me this was always canon. Doesn't interfiere or contradicts the narrative comparing it to some movies. If you haven't seen Dragon Ball Super Super Hero I highly recommend it it's got the same old dragon ball humor back and the underdog or backup team plot.
I wish all the movies were canon but I'm glad you made this video to show people who don't know that the older movies are a contributor to what made dragonball the success it is today 💙 Cooler, Turles, Garlic Jr, and even Slug should be brought back in the canon anime, they are really great characters that could get more backstory
I like the idea that perhaps Goku Black is a version of Turles, but that’s just my way of thinking.
i always loved the garlic jr saga and it was a good story to tell between namek and trunk's arrival. its a great arc and its criminally underrated. also this video hits all the same beats as the previous video although i think you sold the roshi humor better with this updated version
I always said that Garlic Jr was a more dangerous version of Pilaf.
I think this brings up a really good point on why Dragon ball is the way it is now, because I totally agree with you on these points, But the dislike for it overshadows the positives people bring up, so nowadays with Super there's a reliance on Goku and Vegeta always being at the forefront and the solution to any adversity in the story, and a constant idea of bigger is better.
This NEEDS to be cannon. Also, Bojack and Cooler. Man, did they have some cool non canon stories

I mean for all intensive purposes ,nothing is stopping boyajck from being cannon, his movie takes place between a time skip meaning its not contradicting anything from the maga or anime storyline, or taking place at the same time as a separate arc , all characters have a reason for being there , even future trunks has a solid reason for participating in this plot , and it doesn't interfere with either the buu or cell saga as it dosent do something like bring back goku early or introduce a buu arc character early , all that's stopping it from being cannon is toriyama just coming out and saying "yep boyack is cannon "

I’ve always been a huge fan of Garlic Junior. Like I’ve been saying for years, it would be freaking awesome if Garlic Junior could do the proper dead zone move and absorb the whole stage. That would shut up these purists.
It’s a really good mini arc especially the garlic jr theme. Imagine Goku and vageta vs garlic jr! He’s immortal and being able to shatter the atmosphere to bring out the dead zone he has powerful abilities he would not be easily defeated
Such a good little saga, was awesome to see Gohan first dabbling as the hero of the series and starting to take atleast some control of his hidden potential.
Ikr. This saga fits perfectly from a character development standpoint. This feels like a perfect blend of the naive, ultra-reactionary early sagas Gohan and the more self-aware, battle-ready Cell Saga Gohan.

I've been saying for a decade they needed to bring back Garlic Jr. Imagine Jerro meets garlic Jr? Which is why he start the Cell project. Then Garlic jt. Goes somewhere to get stronger with some of Jerro tech.
DBZ always had the best filler arcs.

The Garlic,Jr. Saga was the first saga from DBZ that I saw from start-to-finish when I was getting into that anime during my high school days/years.

I really enjoyed this Saga as a kid, so I was surprised to hear many people didn’t like it for some reason or another. I like how our original three heroes are getting the spotlight together for the last time before we move on and how they weren't just waiting for Goku to show and save the day. It was a good filler and I'll always watch it.
I remember so well how Piccolo just squeezed his neck to get the poison out. F'ing brutal.
I also enjoyed the garlic jr saga and yeah anybody who really gets involved with anime and manga will know that some series have an anime canon and a manga canon such as with Rosario Vampire which has an anime that completely different from the manga
For us Toonami kids, the Garlic Jr. saga helped foreshadow Gohan saving the day and Krillin getting the girl, both of which straight up happen at the conclusion of the Cell saga.
I like how this arc kinda extended the time between Goku’s disappearance after Frieza and his return. Made it feel more impactful, instead of him being back in like two episodes. That plus it was cool to see Gohan, Piccolo, and Krillin step up to be the main heroes of the arc.
Personally as someone who grew up with Kai, it was really interesting to see the arc too, as it was kinda crazy to learn they just competent skipped it there (along with a lot of other stuff like the Trunks and Cell future flashbacks later, seriously why cut those?).
One of my new favorite “cannons” is the ALIEN franchise because one of the creators literally came out and said “You can decide your own Cannon” So like AVP can be considered Cannon as well as the Kenner Alien Comics and the Flying Xenomorph Queen!

Anyway on a more serious note, the Garlic Jr saga provided a little bit of a reprieve period between Namek and the Android sagas. The manga wasted no time transitioning from the battle with Frieza and Trunks arrival so I appreciated a smaller conflict before heading into the next big storyline. Plus it’s a nice precursor for when Gohan saves the day against Cell.
Man...as soon as garlic Jr said "you're about to witness a world full of darkness and evil." I was momentarily transported to the 90s, sitting on my bedroom floor, watching toonami.....man I miss my childhood days.
i think its a nice break to make the time between freezer dying and freezer returning seem longer. it always felt kinda weird that mecha freezer just appears so soon, especially after how much effort and plot developement and worldbuilding it took to defeat him. Plus it makes the other Z fighters seem more capable. after goku transformed into a super saiyan it seemed like he was so far above them but when watching the garlic jr saga you really get a feeling for how strong they all are.
i also like the design of the villains and that we get a bit more of that early dragonball feel with demons and magic.
its honestly a nice addition to the source material that shouldnt be skipped when rewatching the anime.
I loved it because "android 20 destroys city" is one of the best eerie tracks Bruce Faulconer has ever produced.
well said. always liked this filler season especially cus its main theme called "demon mist" is probably my favorite faulconer song. i was like 9 or 10 seeing this for the first time and i loved how everything on earth became so hopeless. the music matched it perfectly.

Just for reference the original run of DBZ was 291 episodes. When they rereleased it as Kai and cut the filler is went down to 167 episodes. That's nearly half the episodes as filler.
I never understood the point of kai, I felt it was a DBZ cut to the bare minimum. Someone made a parody of this called DBZ kai abriged and the sayan saga is one episode long.
@@Cdeseco I would've liked a version of Kai that cut down the episodes by removing some of the time-wasting commentary and flash-backs that ate up screen time just for the sake of padding an episode to 22 minutes, but without cutting out actual storylines like Garlic Jr. the Otherworld tournament, the Bulma scenes on Namek, etc.

My opinions are the exact same as yours. I've always found it odd that folks don't like this arc. Can only attribute it to them only liking Goku and Vegeta on screen because the arc absolutely killed!
DBZ had fun siller episodes. The Bug people with Nappa and Vegeta was filler i think, Kid Gohan training more for the Saiyans, Driving Episode, Snake Way was actually long and had stuff, Otherworld Tournament Arc, Garlic Jr Arc, Great Saiyaman/Videl High School stuff was endearing and couldve just been a show itself.
bad Filler: Frieza fight dragged out, almost the entire Buu saga fuck me
My only issue with this arc is gohan kills some of the bad guys but then the Cell saga has a big thing about him not being ready to kill Cell
I'm pretty sure he killed some of Freeza's henchmen on Namek. They fall into a lake after getting hit and don't come back up.

So the DBZ movies could be considered a separate canon as well? Since Goku and the others seem stronger than their tv show counterparts.
Basically
Google "A timeline for DBZ and it's movies that makes sense". There's an entire elaborate flowchart somebody made showing how each movie clashes with the canon, and in-story explanations for how it could've happened, such as Goku arriving in time to defeat the saiyans before they kill the other Z-fighters (leading to Tree of Might, The World's Strongest, and Lord Slug) or Goku defeating Freeza with the spirit bomb rather than becoming super saiyan (which leads to Cooler's Revenge and Return of Cooler), or Goku taking the heart virus antidote ahead of time, leading to Super Android 13.

I honestly have a soft spot for the Garlic Jr arc. Something about fighting a troll-like villain in the confines of a palace/castle feels so nostalgic and OG to me. Plus I love anything where my top two favs Piccolo and Kuririn get moments to look cool.
I agree with this video but I mean Zamasu did also gain immortality but yeah the Garlic Jr. saga is over hated.
Honestly one of the best arguments towards canon and not canon I’ve ever heard. And I’ll be keeping that in mind for the rest of my life.
I liked the lack of Goku to save the day. But the power scaling to me seemed way off. And I couldn’t get over that. I mean our heroes are on ginyu force level or higher. We are told that these are the most powerful fighters in the universe. Krillin alone should have stomped all of them. Then there is Piccolo and Gohan who could fight against Frieza in various forms. They did a good job of suppressing piccolo by hindering Kami. But still this saga should have been over in 3 minutes
Garlic Jr. Was a favorite villain of mine. His story, his appearance, his vile attitude. He was my main among the villains in Tenkaichi 3. (My main hero was Grandpa Gohan).
Garlic Jr. Saga and The Dead Zone are one of my favourite Dragon Ball media and I absolutely love them as they have so much potential of being a unique and horror oriented Saga. I also saw the Fandom wiki website name the filler episodes of Dragon Ball Super as anime canon which is much better than calling them non-canon as it adds depth and relatable elements in the show.
On a side note: maybe 😂 Bulma and the others thought that gohan was someone related who had the same name as Grandpa Gohan and as Goku was in a rush, he didn't bother or have the time to fill them in with all the details 😂. That's my head canon.
Not to mention, it can be said that there are canon episodes with filler scenes in the anime. And, in the episode where Kid Buu dies, the canera cuts to the villains like Frieza and Cell watching the fight from hell, so I’m curious if Buu dying is canon or not 😏

I like this arc myself, and I think as far as enjoyment is concerned being or not canon is not important and fans should stop using it as excuse to gatekeep other people from enjoying something. I do think canon matters when it comes to holding the author responsible for his narrative choices, ESPECIALLY when they tried to change continuity outside it's own work.(LIke some infamous author that shall remain unnamed). The worst Dragon Ball fillers imo are the semi-canon ones, when they just stretch the hell out of a figtht for 10 episodes. It's awful.

Easiest to make canon? Wrath of the Dragon would like. word. Wrath of the dragon has one flaw and that's Goku being stronger than Gohan. However, seeing as it's TOEi and they love to ride Goku, this can be overlooked or outright dismissed. Everything else can take place within the 6 months between Buu being defeated and earths memories of Fat Buu being erased with no problem. Every other movie has at least 1 flaw that makes it impossible to take place.
Also, Kuririn, Roshi and Bulma knowing Gohan isn't the only glaring issue. The DB's were used by Garlic jr. and the movie clearly happens parallel with or at least very close to Raditz's arrival. Everyone is in the same clothes, Bulma has the same hair do which she changes all the time and Gohan is the same age. That being said, the DB's were in tact when Raditz arrived. Goku and Piccolo clearly stating in the manga and anime vs Raditz was the first time they teamed up also makes it impossible to be in the anime canon. Them knowing about Gohans hidden power also. There are several things that make Dead Zone and therefore the Garlic jr. arc impossible to fit even into the anime continuity,

I feel like it would be recieved better if it was'nt connected to a movie that makes the timeline iffy. I myself have to rewatch it again to see if I like it still though.
I thought this arc had a lot of continuity, including referencing Vegeta in space. When Vegeta explains how he turned SSJ, he references his time in space and even encounters a very large meteor and then exclaims he finally understands the secret now. Vegeta then explains a large meteor shower is how he overcame the barrier to being SSJ when fighting Android 19. This scenario happens in the Garlic Jr saga as well. I think the arc seems to be very well placed.
I had every saga on vhs from the beginning the Saiyan Saga to the ending Kidd Buu Saga and my favorite was always Garlic JR Saga!

Filler isn’t canon at all. It doesn’t affect the story in any way.
It’s like Naruto, and One Piece filler, for example.
Everything that happens within the filler is self-contained, and is ignored after the filler ends.
I didn't like it as a kid because of goku being absent but now it's just the most underrated arc that got me for truncks and his warning about the androids

In my Opinion, the Garlic Jr. Saga would've been more suited better as a DBZ Anime Movie that serves as a true Sequel to the previous Garlic Jr. Movie, instead of being an Episode based Filler in the DBZ Anime series,
But all in all, I really do Like and Enjoyed it, the Side Characters like Gohan got to actually shine in the Spotlight and proves that the Writers of this Filler Arc don't need Goku to take all the Action and Screentime,
I do see that the Garlic Jr. Saga did served as an Inspiration around it where Elements that were Implemented into the DBZ Canon, like Krillin's Daughter was named after his Ex-Girlfriend named *Maron* who's basically just a Copy-Pasted Design of Younger but Hotter Version of Bulma Briefs, typical lazy "Toei Animation." 😂🤣

I wish they make Garlic Jr return in Dragon Ball Super Season 2 Filler Arc, where Beast Gohan vs Garlic Jr new level of power and the return of Maron (Krillin’s Ex-Girlfriend)
The dead zone takes place before Raditz arrival, it also showed Goku and Piccolos old rivalry
Didn’t appreciate the garlic jr saga as a kid, when it would start I would just take the week of from the dbz block for a week and return when frieza would land on earth, the older you get the more you realise it’s a masterpiece, I would give anything for the db writers to give us something of this level today, the vegeta space scenes looking for goku are epic enough let alone the awesome fights, plus it made goku return even more epic as a kid as we didn’t see him for a few weeks Making his return memorable.

The biggest issue I have with it is it plays it so safe. You can do anything and just press reset for the next story ep, why make it just dbz movie light?

I always thought it was canon as a kid as it made sense to have a filler villain before the androids plus to make it canon it’s pretty simple when they beat garlic jr In The movie they made a wish to restore everything and wipe away krillin and bulma memory of the situation which leads to knowing gohan
When I first watched this, I didn't know what canon was etc. So I just assumed it took place after the fight with vegeta and before the name saga.
Let’s be honest! This is Gohan’s Story Arc! And it Contributes to his Incredible Power Growth before the Cell Saga!
Honestly! He was Already a Beast, but here, Gohan gets his first Bodycount out of Sheer Rage! After the Frieza Saga, he isn’t Scared anymore, but he is afraid of What He could Do if Pushed Too Far!
And The Garlic Jr Movie and Saga showcase how much of a Threat he is! As it’s the very same reason he could take a Beating from Super Buu in the Majin Buu Saga!
Gohan was built different, and I really wish this Arc became Canon between the Timelines of Dragon Ball.
I can't say I exactly remember all of the arc but I always loved Garlic Jr. His design is awesome and the movie is great. No reason to hate on these eps.
I also enjoyed this saga. Also I agree, the way people treat filler as something that should be disregarded is absolutely ludicrous. When I watch anime I don’t treat it like some kind of homework assignment crossing out information that new to this version. I just enjoy and take it in as It’s being presented. Writers, voice actors, and artists put in that work and these ingrates just pretend they don’t exist just because it wasn’t in the manga? I mean without filler what would we have? Even more months of dry spells and nothing as we await for the manga to finish the next couple of chapters so the anime could continue completely unaltered? I am and forever will be greatful for everything and I mean everything the artist, writer’s, composers, and voice actors did to give us everything they did. Filler is no different in that regard.

I was rewatching dragon ballz and decided to go with kai, severely disappointed this arc wasn't included!
For me its just that they threated it the same as other sagas. After Goku beat Frieza they restarted it from Raditz, and then after the Garlic jr saga they restarted again from Raditz.
Yeah this arc was dope!! Even though people consider it filler, if other anime’s filler were like this one, then it be happy to watch filler.
The movie is canon based off of adapting Garlic jr in the anime. Same with bardock.
can't say "i loved the GARLIC JR Saga", but i liked the fact that from that point on and continuing up to mid Buu saga there seemed to be a normal pass of the mantle so to speak to Gohan which in my eyes is the a better progression than having Goku and Vegeta being the strongest in-universe characters until the end of DB Super.
I enjoyed the rest of the series don't get me wrong, but i believe it would be even better if were told the story from the newer generation's point of view,
especially after the "mystic gohan" powerup in the Buu saga where Gohan whose supposed to be suuper strong and yet he failed.
This comes from a fan who really liked the DB GT movie with goku gr. and the future Trunks saga.

I always enjoyed the Garlic Jr. Saga. Especially since Dead Zone was my favorite DBZ movie. Imagine my disheartening when I realized it wasn't "canon" because it wasn't in the Manga. I mean, in the original first season run, Toonami showed the first movie before the series cut up into three parts.
Also, you're right about Roshi, in the original Dragon Ball. He was constantly sexually harassing women, especially Bulma. He always got bonked on the head because of it, but still. I love the humor.
Now this is an opinion I haven't seen maybe ever lol but I do kinda agree some of the filler in DB or DBZ is pretty damn good like some filler in Naruto or Bleach I like a lot
