I'd really miss the indifference of Pinhead, it was the most defining thing about him, it made him quite separate from the beasts and monsters in other movies that were also implacable and seemingly unstoppable, it was this indifference that made his torture and focus so much more intense as the lack of rage showed he had all the time in the world and determination to get what he wanted and he damn well knew it.
It was this calmness and serene intellect that made him so chilling - Hannibal was the same, the difference between a predatory beast and a genuine master of all it surveys, it knew what would happen and wasn't afraid to give it plenty of rope and play games because it knew the end was assured.
This was little more than hack and slash ending.... A better ending would've simply a calm disemboweling of the cleaver an almost leisurely walk to the break in reality (this would also show his challenging to the order allowing him to ascend to the title of hell priest proper, via challenge and could be delved into in next movies as character development) and even when the rift was closing "A little something to remember me by" with the hook in Kirsty's shoulder as the rift was closed by the Keeper. This would show Pinhead might've been delayed, but that the hunt was still one and Pinhead damn well knew the next chance wouldn't be far away.
Pinhead shouldn't be a ravening beast, it's an insult to the heritage

It's a bit like Blofeld being Bond's "adopted brother." Too much familiarity, too personal, too many coincidences if the world's greatest spy and the world's most prolific criminal were childhood buddies. It's too convenient. I was actually on board with this idea until you mentioned Pinhead's indifference. He does hold himself above the meat, and that distance makes him even more imposing. Frank Cotton as a Cenobite could be a really interesting twist on the classic story, actually, but not as Pinhead.

this was always such a terrifying line especially when sweet little Kirsty is on the receiving end of it. That they were going take take her away and subject her to something so depraved it wasn't of this world, rob her of all innocence because they believed she wanted something she didn't even ask for.

Don't like Frank being Pinhead. I'd prefer a mesh up of the part one and two, with Frank being a different cenobite who kills Carver and then at the end Pinhead steps out and tells Frankobyte he's already broken every rule in the order and his membership is hearby revoked, and he should have stayed in hell long enough to learn there is are hell priests like Pinhead that keep order over puny maggots like him.

The allure of Pinhead- aside from his intelligence and eloquence- was his dispassionate nature. It wasn’t personal- he was simply following the rules... just another day at the office.
I don’t want to see Pinhead behaving angrily or holding a grudge...it takes away from his composed, impassive nature.

Mmm - I'd rather a more book accurate adaptation. Where Kristy is an old girlfriend still in love Rory even though he married Julia, Pinhead just a background character who might very well be female, and the Engineer is more active in the plot, and Kristy becomes the guardian of the puzzle box.

After thinking about it for awhile.... I actually like MOST of this remake EXCEPT the part about Frank becoming Pinhead.
I can image Frank being turned into a "beginner Cenobite" because Pinhead has shown up to "set things right" He makes a grand entrance as if upper management must intervene because lower management is now out of their depth.
I imaging Pinhead ripping the rest of the Larry skin off of Frank, throwing him into the Cenobite butcher shop... Then.... having a very menacing encounter with Kristy, and then letting her go. I would like to see him punish other Cenobites for letting Frank escape in the first place... but you are never quite sure if he is employing the carrot.. or... the stick style of management.... heh heh.
Following all of this.... in sequels, we could see how Cenobite Frank rises in the ranks of The Gash..... and ..... you can witness the depth of power and authority Pinhead wields..... maybe finding his origin is NOT human, but maybe Angelic. There are endless ways to taste this vast..... delicious SUFFERING!

It brings up more questions about the "Pinhead" type of cenobite, about why and how He/She is the defacto leader... and what it really means to be 'the leader' in the context of the this world created by Clive Barker.
      Maybe
      Pinhead isn't always in charge.
It would be cool to see Frank develop into a different kind of cenobite... and...a challenger to Pinhead's position.
I would like to see HOW one gains power as a cenobite.... What are the rules.
Judging by your name, I am guessing that you are familiar with the Vedic stories of ancient India (Ramayana, Mahabharata). The saints and demons alike are able to gain terrific power through sacrifice and austerity..body mortification, fasting.. and by keeping their word... fanatically adhering to any personal vow made. In addition, power is gained by dutifully following precise rituals that involve exact timing in alignment with star and planet configurations. Also... by developing EXTREME concentration thru meditation....
There MANY rich ways to take this story... I hope they don't ruin it.

P Heresy Pinhead being a leader more have to do with more behind the scenes reason. In the novel the Cenobites act more likes group all sharing dialogue. In the movie apparently the story goes actors had difficulties talking with the make up, which lead to most of the dialogue going to the ones who could talk more freely (Pinhead and female).
Then as we all know Pinhead unintentionally became the series mascot when he was an never intended to be (I mean in the first film he was the cenobite who died first).

  • @deckard3755
    @deckard3755 5 лет назад +35

I personally never liked Pinhead being "explained". Much preferred him just being this figure to wonder about and never really know. Kinda like the Joker in Dark Knight.
Also, the guardian of the box feels a bit shoe horned in and a bit confusing seeing as at the beginning it felt like they wanted to trick someone into opening the box and then they come along and close it at the end. Doesn't seem to fit well at all.
Kirsty went into Hell from the attic and when she came back out was in the hospital for some reason. Just seemed a bit unexplained, I don't know why it couldn't have just ended in the attic.
I think a remake of the first film is a bit dumb as it was the only one that felt well rounded, even though I did like the second one with the doctor and the one focusing on the creation of the lament configuration (Bloodlines?) I did quite like Pinhead warring against the other cenobites and think that could be a great thing to focus on properly in a movie.
Tl;dr- I'm kind of happy this didn't get made, retreading old ground is such a cash cow these days.

    • @Nga_Babaye
      @Nga_Babaye 5 лет назад +4

I don't mind a remake like this if is done well. I'll take it, but you're right about a few things. The Frank vs Kirsty stuff is much closer to Hellbound Heart on the return visit at first, and then it diverges horribly.. I dislike Kirsty entering hell through the attic and exiting in the hospital. The guardian is a bit too much bullshit. The script is also replaced the Engineer with the dog. I would hope to the Engineer would be there too, as the guardians answer to the engineer if I am recalling it right.
I think it would work better if Frank wasn't Pinhead, but was a Frankobite, as I can't see Pinhead as rape demon. After Frankobite kills Carver and chases Kirsty back to wherever, and as he's about to rape her soul, a chain goes through one wrist, then the other, and then one hits him in the throat and the finish by wrapping around the limbs. A crack within the crack opens, a nexis of light and energy, and from it comes Pinhead, exposing a 3rd rank in the order over carver and his minions, the hell priests, or "hell's" own form of law within the Order of the Gash. I imagine Pinhead tells Frankobite that if he'd stayed in hell a while longer he would have learned better than to disobey a deal and then kill one of his own, that his membership has been revoked, and his soul is forfeit. The chains then burn him erupt with energy and start to unmake Frankobite and finally pull him apart. The last image we see of him is his bloody carcass and something that looks like it is a wilted, dried up cock, but in a manner that it's not so obvious.

This was absolutely Awesome! It un-nerved me and that's not an easy thing to do. I'm conflicted about Frank becoming Pinhead though. That is something that needs to be reconsidered in my opinion. Pinheads had some humanity still left within him and Frank being Pinhead takes that part away! The Cenobites to me were always the ones who brought about the reaping of what you sow and that's what made them so great! Frank could be some kind of nemesis to Pinhead who keeps trying to take over to so he can go after Kirsty, there needs to be an internal struggle inside of hell too, that's what will really keep things exciting and enticing for the fans! That my two cents worth, Thanks for your time!

Pinhead made an impact that stayed with us all these years because he was quietly menacing. He didn't need to shout, scream, or even swear in order to intimidate you or give you chills. It was his intelligent articulation and general lack of emotion alongside his manner of speech that got us hooked in. Pun slightly intended.
That's what made him the most intelligent antagonist in the genre. As a sidenote, Candyman would take second place.

Plz allow me to elaborate the current update. In recent news producer David S. Goyer was set to reboot the story earlier in the year but he got slammed by Barker due to his recent failure films that Goyer backed. With Dimension Films (the Weinsteins) only own partial film rights (pt3-up), as the first 2 films are independently owned and Clive owns 90% of that. Clive is keeping the reboot in secret as he has turned down 7 different scripts from 7 different writers as Clive denies every single one, the rights are the current problem as the film has rights under New World Pictures but Dimension can't do nothing about except to proceed with failure sequels. A prominent reboot will happen, it just needs finess and proper care.

"Demons to some, Angles to others"
That to me is the mantra of what hellraiser should be. This treatment was very well written and enjoyable to hear, and I love the idea of cenobite creation, but the two big problems I have is that 1) frank becomes pinhead far far far too quickly. What happened to a thousand years of pain and pleasure? and 2) They should not be part of the judeo-christian concept, they should be beyond it, from a different realm entirely.

I have some mixed feelings about Frank being Pinhead, I guess it would fit with the character of Pinhead making him more malevolent and sinister, however it doesn't make sense. If Frank was chosen to be Cenobite, why didn't Leviathan make him one when he first opened the Box and not after he had escaped. I think the reasoning behind it was to setup a future confrontation between Julia and Pinhead (Frank). They wanted to make Julia the Queen of Hell and continue the franchise with her, however Claire Higgins didn't want to reprise the role, and I think that is what Clive was eventually building towards had this been made into a film.

Mix elements from the two scripts and you would have a great film. though I guess one argument could be it is not different enough. But then it is a remake.

I love when you read. You have a great voice and skill as a storyteller (why I watch all the SCP videos). I love the format so if you get another chance, I would gladly watch/hear another script. This specific "Clive Barker Script" idea, is terrible though.
I'd like to start with saying, I'm a kid of the 80's and always LOVED Hellraiser. Had it replaced the original script, back in the 80's, it would have been awesome. (the first 2/3, minus the Frank becoming Pinhead part. My person spin: Perhaps making Frank into a mindless Cenobite minion, just to show us the "room" idea). But no point in making it a remake in 2018'ish (or back when it was written). Would smell too much of a desperate "cash grab reboot" without anything new and just pissing on fans and the lore. So VERY glad it never got made.
But for a future movie in the franchise, then I would love to see more of that "cenobite creation room". That would be an amassing feature and expansion of the "cenobite lore".
Just my 2 cents or "nail in the skull"

This script, I consider new. This would attract the older audience who are fans of the slow melodic murder in the first half and also attract the younger audience who favor brutality and blood in the second half. it's such a twist to see Frank, the new lead almost. Elliot Spencer followed and enforced the order, frank doesnt.

Is there some rhyme or reason for the specific way the Cenobite's are constructed... or ... is it just random? I was always holding out for some reveal about why Pinhead is constructed that specific way. That hope is dashed if Frank becomes the mysterious, masterful Pinhead, WITH NO TRAINING... AND NO QUALIFICATIONS. I was hoping for a back story showing Pinhead ascending to the position of lead Cenobite.... Maybe he originated "the Order of the Gash" himself... or usurped that position from another Cenobite with an equally interesting backstory.
Maybe there is a tie in in regards to Angelic realms gone off the rails.... once upon a time.... Which is a plot point Clive Barker uses in the Scarlet Gospels. This could create an alternate version of the mythology of "Hell"... which could reveal it to be more voluntary and cooperative, a perverted consequence of desire.... rather than it forced upon you (because of sinning).
I don't know.... There is MUCH more to the mystique of Pinhead, than just Frank Cotton.... after being forced to get a makeover in the Cenobite beauty parlor. It just seems too convenient. A huge short cut that leaves not enough room for other interesting stories.
I love the idea of seeing the construction of Cenobites.... but that "body shop" should be just the starting point for them. There should be stories about their Cenobite training and their progression into becoming the "masters" of Cenobite Priest craft... like what was hinted at in the original.
If it's the "Order of the Gash", that implies a hierarchy.... tiers of authority. How does that work?
Is Clive Barker even up to the task of fleshing it out?

My initial feeling when Frank Cotton was chosen as Pinhead, was disappointment. Earilier in the script, Frank and Julia had a conversation about what happened to him, and he described why a box victim might be chosen as a Cinobite, but not nearly enough exposition was given at that point, to justify the choice of Frank becoming one at the end.
Then I began to think about all the other villainous characters in other stories. Pinhead became an icon. A Dart Vader type relatable villain character that was feared only by other characters in the story, and not at all by the audience. Pinhead is the Vader of 1980’s Hellraiser.
By turning Frank Cotton into Pinhead, we get a villain that forces a change in how we view not only him, but the protagonist, as well. It turns Pinhead away from a dangerous but relatable Hannibal Lector like character, into a nightmare that is feared and hated by the audience, and the protagonist character. In other words, it turns Vader-Pinhead into Freddy Krueger-Pinhead. I kinda see what the rewritten script was going for.
In the end, the success of the continued story would seriously depend on how well Pinhead and Kirsty’s associations unraveled in future installments. If done right, it could be a really great way to get different but great characters out of it.
However, just as a single story, and knowing it won’t go any further, I absolutely hate it. For all his evil, Frank is rewarded with immortality and super powers. We want to see Frank get what’s coming to him, and becoming Pinhead, isn’t that, but I’m sure this was written as the first of many installment of stories that never took off.

I hope the series follows the original literary works beginning with the hellbound heart. The movies got kind of ridiculous with lore and continuity after about the fourth on. I do like pinhead being a Vietnam vet who after being traumatized by the war went on a hedonistic journey that lead him to the box. But the storyline following the merchant family and beyond just got stupid. (It had potential but they screwed up by messing with the pinhead origin and going totally cheesy with it.)

The idea to them, that pleasure and pain are one and the same and they dont see what they are doing as evil, just their version of showing you how great their lives are..by torturing you is rather scary.
Even, then in one and two they show they make everyone a personal hell/haven..Like, being locked in a room with hot women who you cant have sex with cause when you go to get em they are gone. I wanna see more of that.
That and hearing pinnhead cuse and talk about fucking and calling people bitches..That is like new age freddy shit and a tad edgy for Pinnhead..Which most people view as a more civil creature. Like very restrained knowing he has power and will not flex his muscles til force, that when he yells..you obey. He does not need to call you name..His simple being demands respect.

I agree with your doctor angle simply because the Girl was useless to them, she would be like a machine that also solve the puzzle but had no soul - essentially it's the desire that makes the host rich and without that it's pointless. The box was to act as a filter and honey trap, but when the filter is broken it's useless and needs to either be repaired or a better filter found - even a temporary one, which is what the trial of the house was like in Judgement, a temporary solution.

This treatment is not bad. I think I would have enjoyed a doctored version of this as a reboot. I say doctored because I am not sure about Frank Cotton being Pinhead. Why would they have even made him a cenobite when he was already so unruly and interested in escape? These kinds of rules of the world need to be established first in the writer's mind and then communicated through visuals in the actions of the characters more clearly and I feel like there has to be some logical reason for making Frank Pinhead. I like the cenobite creation scene. I would like to see a focus upon Kirsty either coming of age more clearly with some kind of issue as a stronger arc or even Julia having a stronger arc. Maybe we see her become a cenobite and saves Kirsty with her own misshapen and nightmarish formation. Anything is possible. Too bad they have not taken Clive Barker's treatment to another level and add a remake to the series.

Hmm, I can get why you like this script, but I have mixed feelings about Frank-Pinhead.
As Jason stated, the indifference of Pinhead, is a pretty crucial part of his character, from which Frank-Pinhead is complexly divorced.
Although to be fair, it would fit other incarnations of Pinhead, even from Clive Barker, who behave more actively maliciously - as Pinhead, or "the Hell-Priest" seems to an entity attached to hosts, like the most iconic incarnation/host, being Elliott Spencer, but comics show Pinhead predates Elliot - being the Aztec god Elliott Spencer.

Very interesting treatment on the remake. The new Frank cenobite is very much in tune with the Hell Priest's demeanor, strength and ego in "The Scarlet Gospels". After hearing the audio of this treatment, (was it written before, during, or after the novel I'm curious), it makes the events of the novel, and the character of the Hell Priest more recognizable and understandable. Of course he would do what he does in that novel, if, in fact, he was once Frank Cotton. At least in my opinion. Overall, this would have been a great reboot for the series, and, if successful, could possibly have concluded with a film version of "Gospels". Though Kristy would have to meet Harry. Which would be an adventure in and of itself.

this is dreadful. Along with the Scarlet Gospels, I feel like Clive Barker doesn't really understand his own creation. The Cenobites were never supposed to be demons of hell. They were entities in the higher echelons of experience, bound to the Leviathan. It seems so trite and uninteresting to make them simply demons of the christian hell. This was the problem with the films. Making the cenobites nothing but boogymen is just..meh. The indifference of pinhead and the clockwork nature of the order of Gash, that was where the fear was - they are not evil, or good. They simply are.
