How I Keep My Pool Water Crystal Clear All Summer Long!!!

- In this video I show you exactly how I keep my above ground pool water crystal clear blue all summer long. I have an 18 foot round above ground pool that I've owned since 2017. Pool stores will try to sell you a bunch of unnecessary chemicals that really are a waste of money. To keep my water fresh and clean, I use only a few simple affordable chemicals you can purchase from Walmart that won't break the bank.
CBBM Method
C = Chlorine
B = Baking Soda | Raises PH and Alkalinity
B = Borax | Raises Alkalinity Only
M = Muriatic Acid | Lowers PH & Alkalinity

Man, I can't thank you enough for passing on your knowledge to us. Simple, straight-forward, no corny music and graphics. I rarely leave comments but I had to tell you thank you. This is going to help my family and I this summer!
It's comments like this one that really makes me glad that I took the time to share what I learned about pools with other people. This really works for me, year after year after year. I hope it works for you too. Thanks for your comment!!
@@DJ2Legit007 Thanks for the reply my friend, I'm glad you saw my original comment! Videos like yours are what RUclips is supposed to be about. It's turned into garbage, but channels like this are why most of us are actually here. Nice people like you sharing knowledge and making information easily findable is just amazing. What a time we live in! But thank you again, and I'll be glad to update you if you'd like!
I was digging around for information and I could cry. I just spent $200 that I couldn't afford on chemicals and pool hoses. Your explanation is so easy. Thank you!
I am so glad you found my video. This way has saved me a ton of money on unnecessary pool chemicals and my pool is a beautiful crystal clear blue every year. I wish you all the best!
This video is fantastic. I’ve had above ground pools for 30 years and I follow these same simple steps.
Neighbors spend MUCH more on chemicals, and get worse results. Something the test-kit-chemists fail to tell above-ground owners is that the chemistry is simplified since we have liners (as do some in ground pools).
This video of yours should be watched by every above-ground pool owner who wants to spend less time and money…and enjoy their pool more!
Thanks so much! Glad you understand what I'm saying here lol. Most people overthink it. It's really not that hard.
Your pool is beautiful! Im looking to upgrade the sand pump that came with my 20X52 pool, any suggestions on a good sand pump filter?
You explained it so simple, just great thank you
You're welcome!!
Loved your video , very knowledgeable, can you show your ladder system looks interesting
You explained it very clearly and easily! Thank you.
I'm so glad you understood what I was saying lol. Thanks!!
OMG this may have been the best video and advice I have found. Thank you for explaining it , great tips and super affordable fixes

Thank you Vince for making this so easy and taking the time to make this video. Very helpful.
Glad you found the information helpful!
Nice and simple that’s the way to go 👍🏻
Agreed!!
Thanks for keeping it simple.
You're welcome. Yes, I think it is pretty simple too.
Thank you for all the info especially the vacuum tip! 😊
You are soooo welcome!!
Sounds a lot easier than what I've been doing ! I'm going to try your method with an optimistic attitude and see where it takes me. Hopefully, to clearer water ! Thanks so much.....
You're welcome! Sure go ahead and give it a try. What do you have to lose? Good luck!!

Good job Vince
Thanks! I see so many new pool owners online struggling to keep their pool water clear so I made this video in hopes that it could help someone who is struggling.
Thanks for sharing. Great info.

Glad to hear it! I'll be opening my pool tomorrow.

Great information, Thank you!

Thank you for the info, very helpful.
You're welcome!
We just had our 24ft x 52" pool installed Friday and super excited to get in it. It is yet a bit cold though. Used our local city well water from a water tanker to fill it. Shocked, put 3 chlorine tablets in the skimmer box attached to the pool since we had to get a new floater. Will change them out so they float but put the solar cover on to keep the pollen from getting in. Was really bad these past few days. I will most likely change to his methods to save money but our initial cost was a bit high. Since i didn't want to waste water with a vacuum, I got a cordless vacuum to attach to my skimmer pool. New for me, so I will see how it works. Thanks for these tips and the website!!
You're welcome!!
Very helpful! Thank you
You're welcome!
Great information and Great Video good job.. I have an inground cement pool. The only extra step for me is to add calcium..
Thanks!!
Great info, thanks!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for sharing your information this is great setting up my pool just ordered the sand filter 😀
Awesome!! I know you're excited. Enjoy!!
@DJ2Legit007 definitely I've learned alot on pool care it was frustrating at first but got the hang of it now even struggled with the leveling part at first but works out good 👍
Thank you
We have a case of high alkalinity and normal ph, so we do need to check alkalinity, unfortunately, and do the dance between muruatic acid and soda ash. I also learned I need cyanuric acid in order for the chlorine to stay put. Good information here, but I do think it all depends where your water is starting from...
Thanks for the info!
You're welcome!!
Awesome video
Thanks!!
Man the method to vacuum off the bottom using Syphon is brilliant
Ikr. After I tried it the first time about 6 years ago, I've been using that method ever since.
Great video
Thanks!!
Thank you very good information I happy you are wonderful
Thank you!!
Poolrx work very great
Lol I like this. The 3 are really basic what you need. All that other calcium and stuff just starts getting a bit much. But it's great for people who really wanna be on another level lol
Agreed!
Great video thank you

Appreciate the share bro!

awesome
Thanks
Great
Great video! Easy. How long do you run your filter for?
Thank you!! 10 hours a day from 12 noon until 10pm.
Great video, loved it. As you are using chlorine tablets you should be aware that about 40% of these are actually Cyanuric Acie (aka as stabilizer) I am sure you are aware of. This value climbs and you should keep it below 40 or so. Otherwise your chlorine is less effective. I love the syphon vacuum! Unfortunately my pool deep end is 2.4 meter deep so I have no chance of using it.
Thanks for the info!
I feel way less scared now. Thank you
So glad to hear that. You're welcome!
Wow that leaf vaccuum looks amazing
It really is amazing!! I highly recommend it.
@@DJ2Legit007 I think it is great as well! Where can you buy it?

@@DJ2Legit007 Thanks a lot
Thank you so much for your video. My question is I just received all my cleaning supplies do I put them on all at once after checking the pool calculator?
You're welcome. No, always use one chemical at a time and space them out about 3-4 hours so they can properly circulate in your pool before adding the next chemical.
Thank you!! Wish you were in Alabama!! How often do you vacuum your pool for algae. We had a terrible time last year. It was our 1st year having a pool. We had no clue how to maintain it. It’s a rectangular above ground pool that holds 15,000 gallons. It’s as large as an in ground pool. We tried to hire people to maintain it for us. But none of the professionals cleaned above ground. They said they were too hard to keep up. Your video gave us some great info. Hopefully this summer will be better.
I siphon vacuum for algae probably around twice a month. It just all depends on how much algae I see on the bottom of the pool. Hope my video helps you. Good luck this year!
Thanks for the reply 😊
Thank you so much
You're welcome!!
You did a great job at your pool, and your explanation is very simple so I will fallow your orientation.
Thank you💯👏
You are welcome!
Works 4 me too.
Great video! Would you shock the pool if you were filling it up for the first time? if so would you still use the same chemicals?
Thanks!! Nope. I don't believe in shocking a pool "just because" it has water in it. After filling a pool for the first time, I will test it and see what chemicals it needs and then add the proper chemicals.
Bravo,
I am happy I came across this video I was having issues trying to vacuum my pool and the pool store prices are really expensive for chemicals.
Yes a pool store will always try to do whatever they can to increase sales. They will try to push so much unnecessary stuff on you because that is their job. That's how they keep a job. This is really all you need right here in my video.
Thanks Vice! I have the same size pool 18’ x 4’ deep. It came with a small 1/3 HP pump and sand filter. What is the HP rating on your pool pump?
1.5 HP
thNK YOU SO MUCH I HAVE BEEN WATCHING EVERYONE ELSE AND IT TOOK A MAN THAT LOOKS LIKE ME TO BREAK IT DOWN THE SIMPLEST THANK YOU I WAS MISSING THE chlorine LIQUID WENT TO THE POOL STORE TOLD THEM MY PROBLEM THEY DIDNT EVEN MENTION TO BUY THIS WTH
Well you must be a very handsome man lol. J/k... but yeah, this is why I cut my pool store a loose years ago. All they care about is selling you a bunch of crap that you don't need. They are a BUSINESS that needs to keep making $$$ to keep their jobs. Glad my video helped you.
@@DJ2Legit007 walah just like that my pool is clear ayyyeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@GregHarris-lm5ox Yep. Congrats!!!
Is there a guide to using the calculator? Like how do we know what our current levels are? Are the numbers on the test strips? I have only seen color coded test strips. Awesome video by the way, Thank you
You know what your current levels are when you look at your test strip and compare it to colors on your test strip container. Remember all of this is NOT exact science. Just ballpark. Take that info to the pool calculator, enter the amount of gallons of your pool and the desired level of each chemical you want. The calculator will tell you how much of each chemical you need to get YOUR desired results. You're welcome.
We just bought a house last fall that came with an above ground 24 footer. We are so grateful for your videos, we are in the backwash/rinse/filter phase and our water has gone from dark green to cloudy blue within a matter of hours! Thank you!
Okay awesome!! If the cloudiness doesn't go away and your PH and alkalinity is in line, use flocculant to clear it up. Let the floc sit in pool for 24 hours overnight. Then vacuum the microscopic dead algae off the bottom of the pool the next morning. 😊
Thank you so much!! This is truly cheaper than taking a sample of my above ground pool water to a pool supplier, just to walking out the door with a 380.00 bill for what they want to sell!! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!🙌
Thank you for the info, i just completed a 24' build by myself had to mention that part lol, ive gone from green (well water) to teal green to blue but not crystal clear yet, all my Chemicals are within range, just haven't been able to get the clearing yet, do you have any idea why?
It's usually because of floating microscopic debris that you can't see with the human eye. Use flocculant to clear that up. Put the floc in the pool. Let it sit overnight. The debris will turn black and fall to the pool floor. Vacuum it off the pool floor the next day.
Amen
Just curious is this just for above ground pool
Sand filter is the way to go!
I agree. It's so much easier to maintain in my opinion.
Awesome video. It sounds easy but I cant get my pool right for nothing. Im on my 3rd time draining 1/2 my pool in 2 weeks. All my numbers are off range. Saturday my pool was blue yesterday it turned green.
Sorry to hear that.
I you follow this video you should be fine. I have an inground pool and the only extra step I have to take is to add calcium.. Seems like you're not adding enough chemicals. My pool has never been green and I'm not experienced.
@@Lyfehurts66 I solved my problem. My cya was very high. It would not take the chlorine.
The pool place had me adding the wrong chlorine granules to my water. When I started using liquid chlorine everything was perfect. My water is so clear and pretty. Check out my recent pool post on my channel
@@Lyfehurts66 the pool store gave me all refund on all the incorrect items they sold me.
@@Lyfehurts66 Yep.
So basically, the ph up is Pure Baking Soda only. Thank you for this so so so much, sir
Yes that's correct. You're welcome.
Actually no. This video is not entirely correct. Baking soda is primarily used to increase alkalinity. But if you use it you will also increase ph somewhat. If you want to increase ph only without increasing alkalinity you should use ph+ (or soda ash...it is the same). Soda ash is way stronger than baking soda so be careful not to over do it.
@@DJ2Legit007 not correct. baking soda is sodium Bicarbonate or Alkalinity Increaser. PH+ is sodium carbonate aka soda ash. best method for raising just PH is aeration but that requires a system thats able to force air into the water and force carbon dioxide to gas off from the water. which isnt common in pools unless you have a water feature such as streamers or a waterfall.
Hey boss great video. New to keeping up pools. Just put up a 18ft and wanting to start right. What would be the first thing to do? Test water right after filling?
Thanks!! Yes, test your water after filling the pool. If your PH and alkalinity are good, then don't add anything except for a small dose of chlorine for maintenance. I recommend a floater with two 3.5 inch chlorine tabs per week in your pool will keep it nice and clear. Enjoy!!
@@DJ2Legit007 test strip seems everything is low low. Used city water to fill.
@@DJ2Legit007 I’ve put baking soda in this morning
@@dustinjohnson2116 Yeah, if PH and alkalinity are low, that baking soda will bring them back into perfect level.
Can I use this technique on a vinyl lined in ground pool about 6000 gallons?
You know, that is a really good question. I never had an inground pool before so I can't comment on that for sure.
❤
What brand of pool sand filter and pump do you use
It's an HP 1.5
Great job I thought baking soda was to replace alkalinity
Baking soda raises PH and alkalinity.
I use pristine blue system .
Hey cousin! I used Pristine Blue for my first 3 years owning my pool! The 3rd year I was having a problem getting rid of mustard algae so I switched to chlorine. Been good ever since!
Do you ever add shock and algacide
For the most part, shock is the same as chlorine, just a higher more concentrated dose. No, I never add algacide.
You awesome 🛎❤️🇨🇦
Thank you!!
Do you get a lot of rain? What state are you in? Do you calculate from 7000 gallons or 8000 gallons? I have the same sized pool.
I'm in Oklahoma. Yes sometimes we do get a lot of rain. I calculate 8000 gallons for my pool.
I’m in Oklahoma too and 1st time pool owner. We are in the process of setting up a 24’ pool right now. I’m so nervous. I’m not certain what to do since it’s completely fresh water and we are having so much rain now. I see so many people talk about their pools getting cloudy when it rains and don’t know what to do. Do you have any suggestions? I have bought the baking soda, chlorine tablets and gallon of chlorine so far to get prepared. Love your tips!
Do you ever use the drop kit to check ph and chlorine.
Nope, never.
how much you put the stuff in ? all three combo
I go to the website and it tells me how much of each chemical to put in.
Am i missing something? When your using the siphon method, you said one of the hose ends gets thrown over the edge of the pool which means you will lose all that water (exactly what you said you didn't want to happen). I must be missing something.
Yes. What you're missing is that the siphon method uses way less water, not zero water lol.
Can u put a link of the items in your video
Done 😁
Where is that link to show you how to balance the water. There was supposed to be a link on your video??
it is there but you need to copy paste
It's on the video at 4:07 and it's also in my video description.
Syphon, That’s pretty fucking smart.
Thanks! Yeah I learned this trick years ago from a guy in a Facebook group. It works great! I've been doing it ever since.
Bro I just brought a house last year and it came with a pool 16 x 30
Do you take down your pool every year?
It's a hard sided pool so I never take it down.
Soo how much of those jugs did you use?
All ten.
Sorry ten what? Oz or pounds I’m talking about of each of those things?
@@eydscornell2543 10 gallons
FYI PH is the same thing as alkalinity. A higher ph means the water is more alkaline, if the ph is lower it means the water is more acidic, if it is in the middle it means the water is neutral.
Thats what I don't get. Most of these people say to adjust your alkalinity first and then adjust your ph. ???
@@tomfisher7206 they are confused ph can be acidic, neutral or alkaline.
A fellow nose plugger!
Yep. Been that way all of my life lol.
You really onky check the levels once a month?
That's correct.
So nothing for conditioner?
The Sun will eat the chlorine away without it.
Nope, nothing for conditioner and the sun doesn't eat up my chlorine like you said lol.
@@DJ2Legit007
I live in Florida.
In the summer time especially and with the price of chlorine pfffft you’d be a fool not to use conditioner
there is a pile of white stuff probably the baking soda in the middle of the pool lol
Nope that's not what that is. Several years ago, I was trying to scrub something off the bottom of my pool liner and actually scrubbed the color right off. Ouch!!! Lol... so yeah. The good news is that the liner was still in tact. Only the color was affected.
@@DJ2Legit007 I used baking soda myself a few years back and it just seemed hard to dissolve in my pool for some reason and kinda piled up like what I see is all.
@@scottowen7401 Oh okay gotcha. So that's why you thought it was a pile of baking soda lol. I haven't had any issues with baking soda dissolving in my pool.

Ummm what other chemicals?
@@DJ2Legit007 do you just pour in the baking soda directly into the pool or do you dilute it first. I was asking how you add the chemicals shown in the thumbnail. I appreciate you responding.
My pool journey is tumultuous because it’s the first for me. It came with house. My pool opener set up the pump, poured in some shock, and pool Clorox and left. I’m on my own now.
@@teeforchange I understand how you feel. 8 years ago when my pool installer installed my pool, he left while my pool was still filling up with water. I was on my own ever since. Anyway, I add the baking soda directly and slowly into my skimmer. I do not dilute it. The liquid chlorine, I just add it directly around the pool. Good luck to you!
