    Excellent video! I bought a new house with an in ground pool and whenever I try to vacuum, the pump loses prime (it makes a different sound and the glass gets empty). I worked around it by half opening the valve of the drain which is on the floor of the pool in the deep end, (which is on the same system as the skimmer - setting on filter and NOT waste) but I am obviously not getting optimal suction for vacuuming the pool. I never thought of filling the pipe with water before vacuuming. From now on I will do as you said and have 100% suction :) And yes I have subscribed!

      @@TheRmilliard You can do it either way, however, if you have a vacuum plate that has a straight hook up, then going over the top is easier and you won’t lose prime. If you have a vacuum plate with a 90 degree hook up then going through the skimmer would be easier. Most importantly, you don’t want to kink the vacuum hose. Thanks for watching.

    Just moved to a house with pool, definitely informative, I had a clorine system added, and automation to operate my valves. Turning the pump on and off and going to spa mode with heat is easier, but now there is little pull in my skimmer, I’m going to check water level. My filter is clean and DE pressure looks ok, I need to figure out which valve decreases pull from the bottom and move to the skimmer basket. I have one skimmer basket besides the one on the motor .

    Nice video. Best part for me was learning how to prime the hose. I'd been using a different method that was time consuming and a bit of a hassle. Also that you can vacuum with the filter set to "waste," which is great after a lot of rainfall when you have to get the water level back below the top of the skimmers. Might as well vacuum while you're at it!

    I recently built a vacuum port on my pool lines for my above ground pool which bypasses the skimmer and eliminates the need for a vacuum plate. At least on my pool, this has improved the suction of the vacuum immensely and makes vacuuming go much faster than before. It all goes out to waste now too which is so much better than filtering it.

    • @JoshMG

      My skimmer line under my diving board busted due to frozen pipes. Previous owners made a make shift line above ground and ran pvc down the length of the pool, and 90° down into where the basket normally would be. Not sure if I can hook vacuum line right to the end of that pvc or if there’s a way to make a makeshift filter to stop large debris from going to pump and clogging it up, or if there’s another recommendation allowing me to vacuum. Your comment made me think you have another solution.

    Hi Mark, very informative video, it’s good when you learn something, it’s why we are here right, so thank you. Ok so the reason why I am here is because I made one of the mistakes highlighted in your video, and I didn’t use the skimmer plate… I just went right in with the end of the hose into the intake… my concern is now, as I was vacuuming quite a bit of debris which I followed up with backwashing, could I have done some damage to the filter or added debris to the sand that is now contaminating it. I’m probably overthinking but I would like to get confirmation from an expert. I will be using the skimmer plate in the future!

    I have a sand filter and have always set to backwash. I didn't realize I could vacuum set to filter.

    Turning off the pump to remove the vacuum plate/hose will allow basket debris to float and reenter the pool, especially if you are using skimmer socks. A better option, if you have it, is to shift the inlet from skimmer to the main drain. The reduced suction will allow you to remove the plate but the debris will remain in the basket.

      Old pro here ... when you encounter items likely to clog your skimmer (sticks/rocks/etc) try to use your leaf rake to collect them prior to vacuuming. Use a motion similar to a push broom .. a quick push will lift the debris a little off the bottom putting it into the perfect position to snag it with the rake.
      When you are down to dirt/sand/pebbles the clogging risk has passed. Vacuum without fear.
      With a little practice you will be using that leaf rake for everything but dirt.
      I'm talking about the leaf "nets" not the flat screen things that rarely work.

    In your sand getting into your pool video, you said you could tell if sand was getting into your pool by the return jets or if you backwash it and sand is in the backwash pipe.
    QUESTION:
    My question that has been bugging me is how would having sand in your backwash pipe tell you that you had sand getting into your pool from your filter. The video made it sound like if you have sand in your backwash pipe that is an indication you have a broken lateral. Please explain this so we will know because I have dand getting in my pool but I have no idea what that has to do with my backwash pipe. Please Explain
    Thnkx

    • @HallmarkPoolSupplies
      @HallmarkPoolSupplies  Год назад

      When in filter or backwash the water goes through the lateral assembly. You should not have sand going into the pool or coming out of the backwash line. If you recently changed sand and you put to much sand in the filter and you backwash, sand can come out of the backwash line, eventually the sand will self level. If you have or have not changed sand and sand is going into the pool you may want to check your lateral assembly for damage. If the lateral assembly is damaged backwashing the filter will not put sand in the backwash line. If the backwash line itself is cracked or damaged underground, when you backwash sand and dirt can wash the ground out around the pipe. Thanks for watching.

    I have always connected my hose to the vacuum port on the wall of the pool, this seems to be a strong suction when fully opened ?

    • @HallmarkPoolSupplies
      @HallmarkPoolSupplies  8 месяцев назад

      Some pools have vacuum lines and do not use vacuum plates, be careful not to clog. If you use a vacuum plate you can vacuum out of the skimmer. If you shut down other suction lines you will have just as much suction vacuuming from the skimmer. Thanks for watching.

      Some inground pool installers do not install a vac port in the pool wall. It seems to be getting done less and less, probably to cut costs and increase profits. My pool also has a vac port, and I use it often, but if we have a storm with wind, and I get a lot of debris in my pool, I’ll vacuum exactly like the video instruction to keep debris out of my vacuum line. I have a Polaris atlas, and it vacuums everything, and doesn’t know what will go through the vacuum line. This saves pool equipment. Best of luck to you.

    Can I vacuum with my sand filter in the “bypass” position? I just opened my pool and my sand filter’s outer shell/egg cracked. It’s 2 weeks before a new filter can be installed and I still need to vacuum my pool and don’t want the debris sitting in it for the next two weeks.

    • @HallmarkPoolSupplies
      @HallmarkPoolSupplies  7 месяцев назад

      Yes, you can vacuum to waste and bypass the filter but you will have to add water to the pool. When you are done vacuuming you can put the filter in the recirculate position. In recirculate you are not filtering the water but you can at least move the water in the pool until the new filter is installed. Thanks for watching.

      Make sure you prime the hose, also make sure you have the right end of the hose hooked up properly. Swivel end of the hose goes on the vacuum head and the stationary end goes on the vacuum plate. Thanks for watching.

    I just watched another vacuuming video that said to use your backwash mode to clear out debris but remove the filter grids first. Now your sayknv not to vacuum in the backwash serting. I dont have a waste setting on my filter. Why cabt i do this?

    • @HallmarkPoolSupplies
      @HallmarkPoolSupplies  9 месяцев назад

      When vacuuming your pool you will be in the filter position for normal cleaning. Backwash your filter if needed when you are done. If your pool is extremely dirty or algae infested then you will vacuum in the waste position. When vacuuming in waste you will have to add water to the pool. If you do not have a waste position then you will have to vacuum in filter unless you have a drain position. Drain and waste are the same. If you have a drain position then you will also have to add water to the pool. Thanks for watching.

    • @HallmarkPoolSupplies
      @HallmarkPoolSupplies  7 месяцев назад

      If you don’t have a skimmer then you will have an outlet on the side of the pool which is your suction outlet. Your hose will go from the suction outlet directly to the suction side of the pump. The hose on top of the pump goes to the multiport of the filter if you have a sand filter. The return outlet on the multiport has a hose that will go to the return on the pool (this is the pressure line). You should have instructions with your pool that will show how to hook up everything. You can also contact Coleman and talk to customer support for help. Thanks for watching.
