  • @Sports4life8988
    @Sports4life8988 3 месяца назад +16

    This is just from what I’ve seen from highlights of some of Nagal’s matches. Of course, I could be wrong in my assessment since I don’t watch his matches in full, but here’s what I gather.
    Nagal seems to be a pure baseline player relying on power to get most of his points. He had some nice FH winners and forced Arnaldi to make errors with his other FH’s.
    But he needs to add another element to his game to stay competitive. I rarely see him go to the net, drop shot, or slice the ball. Opponents can easily exploit that. His serve is also not that strong. Finally, stamina is another area of improvement. I think he has worked on it a bit since the AO, but he’s still labouring a bit in the third set. Also could be a factor in why his recent losses all end in 3 sets.
    If he can improve in these areas, I think he can make it deeper into tournaments. But nothing to scoff at with what he’s done in Monte Carlo so far. Cobolli, Diaz Acosta, and Arnaldi are all talented players ranked within the top 65 and beating them is no small feat.

      I am assuming cricket is the biggest sport in India but, out of curiosity, where does tennis fall in popularity? What other sports would be above it? American here, so I’m not familiar with the country that much other than a few sports figures like Nagal, Leander Paes & Sania Mirza.

    • @SJ-di5zu
      @SJ-di5zu 3 месяца назад +1

      @@vickiego1Tennis is one of the more popular sports in India, but in general, India does not fund sports very much. They don’t believe they have a good chance at the national level and are always told to focus on school and academics. Cricket, badminton, field hockey, table tennis, and tennis are probably the biggest sports in India, but they tend to focus on less “athletic” sports which is why tennis doesn’t get much funding.
      Not to knock cricket or any of the other sports on that list, but they take more skill and less athleticism. To crack the top 100 in tennis, you need to be a freakishly good athlete. Look at how deep Nagal had to dig to get this win, and how he has to play again tomorrow probably.

    Arnaldi didnt even try to shake hands properly with Nagal... No sportsmanship or may b so shocked of loosing unexpectedly even infront of crowd support...

      Why would you shake his hand with respect. He doesn't deserve it and shows no respect. Typical little arrogant smart ass indian who thinks he's special.

    India had very good tennis players like the Amiraj brothers, Leander Paes in the late 70s and 80s and Bopana at the age of 44 still active in doubles and winning titles.

    What a consistent player! Even though you can clearly see that Arnaldi packs venom on his forehand, Nagal kept fighting till the end! Defeating red hot Italian talent on the home soil is a tough ask and not done by any Indian player (at least in single's draw)

    A lot of you on here are pretty young and dont remember Vijay Armitraj from the 70's always a presence. Even some Indian commenters on here are not referencing him and I'm Jamaican born, watched him a lot and Arthur Ashe....Vijay and his doubles partner brother Anand..I think Vijay is in the tennis hall of fame..Top 20 player..a fixture at the majors..
    The Masters 1000 events are very recent..so thats why this a great accomplishment for Nagal as one of the first Indian born players to win a match..but lets not forget the Armitraj brothers, they probably would have won one a match if The Masters series were present back then, a singles match for Vijay and doubles for both. Prakash the son of Vijay does commentary now for Tennis Channel..
    Congrats again Nagal!!
