Hi Midge. This is Michael from Germany...I was born in 1968 ...Ultravox (New wave) ...Kraftwerk...Now we heared the news (Chris) died age 71.Legend never died. Alles gute auf der letzten Reise
He has an incredible voice. So pure ! He’s so talented and more pleasant sounding than some of the people today that rely on Auto Tune. Bring back the genius of the 80’s.
Not this song: Wikipedia ""If I Was" is a 1985 song by Midge Ure. It was co-written by Ure and Danny Mitchell (of Ultravox's tour opening band Messengers), and released as the first single from Ure's first solo album The Gift. It reached #1 on the UK singles chart for one week in September 1985.[1] In the sleeve notes for the 2001 compilation If I Was: The Very Best of Midge Ure & Ultravox Ure wrote: "This song is pure Danny Mitchell. I found a demo of it on a cassette Danny had sent me for his band The Messengers. I grabbed it with both hands, messed around with it, sprinkled it with fairy dust and the rest is history." Ure played all instruments on the song except bass guitar, which was played by Mark King of Level 42."

I am turning 58 shortly. So grateful for the amazing variety of music I enjoyed during my teenage years; what an amazing variation of different artists/styles. I worked in engineering but changed carreer in 2022 and now drive a school bus - I tell my young passengers about the summer of 1983 when my cheap Raleigh bicycle and equally cheap Toshiba radio-cassette recorder provided all the entertainment I needed; long 20 mile+ cycles and home to great music recorded off the radio. No social media or FOMO. Despite some difficulties growing up as a teenager, especially in school and during my Leaving Cert year; the music sustained me. My 20 year old niece also loves this music. I play this stuff in my bus when taking the kids to school and it would be the greatest pleasure if I could convince even one of my young passengers to listen to music from this decade. The '80s were not perfect but times were simpler and there was more social interaction. Nowadays, you cannot even talk to a human when trying to phone a bank or a public service. Would love a time machine!
Nice of you to speak of this to them. Needed to be said. Loved the music of the eighties. The clothing styles looked sharp as well, nice fabric too. Unlike the garbage they sell today.
Just watched him live at York Grand Opera House last night. Absolutely brilliant!! He did this, which I love, and finished with Vienna, and yes he can still hit those top notes, he is superb!! 👋❤
Ultravox had a lot of good songs. Delve into their catalog when you get a chance. I recommend checking out "Vienna". It still knocks my socks off to this day. Another catchy tune by them is "Reap The Wild Wind".
It was late 1985 when I first heard this. I’d just graduated from college & was at my first job in a mid sized city along the US/Mexican border. I was just starting off, working my ass off & broke as hell, but having the time of my life. This song makes feel 25 & invincible again….which means, “If I Was” is more than song-it’s magic.
It was a number one for him at the time then here in Britain/the UK of course-unlike Vienna by Ultravox in 1981 which of course got to number two only but should have been number one for sure! Thank you there too.
What a song and music!!!, Sad and sentimental...with his voice and the keyboards...Midge Ure in his solo and when with Ultravox, with Vienna and Reap the wild wind....Unforgettable. How i miss the 80s😔!!!
This song reminds me of working in Smiths Menswear in High St Edinburgh in the 80s and 90s always was playing over the stereo in shop! Love Midge Ure, very under rated artist and Bob Geldof got all the awards and gratitudes for Live Aid when it was both him and Midge Ure that done it together! But Midge Ure being the man he is stood back and let Bob take the fame and glory! Midge Ure is a Beatifull man and the loveliest man you could ever meet with a heart of gold! Still a hero of mine at the age of 53 years old, for 40 years he's been a part of my life to this day, must listen to him at least once a week still! Thanks Midge ♥️🇬🇧

Beautiful lyrics. They really don't write songs like this anymore. I miss the 80s for music and movies. A simpler time without mobile phones and Internet. When people would sit in a pub in a crowd and interact with each other rather than a square device that they can't put down for 2 seconds. I'm at a loss the amount of times I see people out together but they would as well be alone because everyone is more interested in their mobile phones than what's actually happening around them or in front of them.
A totally brilliant and talented man. The live performance of this at the Princ's Trust Rock Gala (1987) was simply amazing. Downunder, South Australia
Got CD album MONUMENT. ..and THE VOICE where they drum out together is FANTASTIC....made my 3 daughters learn apart each and have best go at it for 50p...or whatever ...my eldest still plays and drums to it ..BRILLIANT BAND.

Mind you, Midge was already a legend with Ultra Vox and the Band Aide days, so it was natural to follow his solo work. This song will always reflect my last few months of my high school days and the mighty 80s with enduring memories.
First time I heard this song was when it was first released. I really liked it then and I have ever since, but no-one at school ever even mentioned it. I'm glad at least that there are people today who still fondly remember it.

I'm really glad that this special masterpiece of a song resonates with you and a new generation of 80s music enthusiasts. The moving lyrics and music cannot but evoke the deepest of emotions because the song is about the inspiring power of love and hope. Of course, pain and sadness are the flip side of great love - and that longing for the deepest love comes with the greatest risk - the highest stakes gamble. I was 19 in 1985 and had just fallen madly in love when this song was at number 1. That's probably why it's so meaningful to me... the "trauma bond" marriage of 17 years didn't work out, but my love of this song resonates even more now that I know what the lyrics represent. Good luck to you young man - in life and love! ❤🌏🍀

Would other men reach out and touch me
If I was a kinder man
Dishing up love for a hungry world
Tell me would that appease her

If I was a painter
I'd paint a world that couldn't taint her
If I was a leader
On food of love from above I would feed her
If I was a poet
All my love and burning words I would show it
If I was her lover
Her eyes in kisses I would cover
Come here my baby
Oh they can't touch you now
I'll keep you safe and warm
