- THE DUKES OF SEPTEMBER is a super group comprised of pop/rock/R&B icons Donald Fagen (Steely Dan), Michael McDonald (Doobie Brothers) and Boz Scaggs.
This video is taken from "Live at Lincoln Center" in NYC which was filmed in November 2012 for PBS' "Great Performances" series. It features the band's dynamic rock and soul revue and not only showcases their well-known hits such as Reelin' in the Years, Lido Shuffle and Takin it to the Streets , but also forays into rock and R&B gems such as Sweet Soul Music and Love T.K.O.

Doobies such a huge part of my life growing up. Saw him in Oakley UT a couple years ago, still incredible.

i hate to burst the bubble, but i believe both Mcdonald and Fagen have auto-tune in their voices on this concert. such a shame because once you hear it, you can’t un-hear it from their iconic voices!!’

@@fretbuzz59 To be honest I also get the feeling that Fagen and McDonald are singing through some sort of filter. I think all three of them actually. At first I was blown away by their pitch when I heard these recordings, but after a few listens, and after comparing them to other live recordings from that period, it's pretty hard to shake the suspicion.
I am 71 years young,I have young friends that think this stuff sucks I tell them all there taste is in there mouth, they just don`t understand what real music is.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Jon during the Pandemic - I actually transcribed this solo for him - he used it for teaching on TrueFire. Jon could not be a nicer person - total class act.
No matter what band or what song is being done- I can ALWAYS find Michael McDonald's voice! It is THAT distinctive and I LOVE IT!
This is heaven for 52 year old me. These guys have made songs I had to grow into.
As an old California hippy, I may be biased, or just blessed? 3 of my favorites of all time. Mike, Don and Boz.

Mike was struggling just a tad wth the high notes but changed his entire delivery, like a pro, and got on with an amazing performance! Any lead vocalist who plays an instrument has my attention instantly.
Oh, no doubt it was borderline elder abuse at the end. That comes with age. The vocal chords just get weaker. The only artists I've heard beat the curse is Kenny Loggins and Gino Vanelli. They can still do the stuff they did 40 years ago without cutting any corners.
He had a chest cold but was feeling better by the fourth pint.

Repeating a line in a song a second later in a Michael McDonald voice very often makes a song better.

You know it brother. !! No digital effects...no looping machines...no multi-track dubs...just real stuff. The new Gen just doesn't get it....
@@tugs53 Not fully. McDonald and Fagen did have a little bit of Autotune sprinkled in their voices. You can hear it at some points

Amazing arrangement of an amazing song by an amazing singer with an amazing band.
I always knew Michael McDonald could sing. I have heard "Fool" countless times. As good an R & R song as ever was written and performed. In my humble opinion. This great version adds Boz and Donald. I have been a fan of Steely Dan since they first got on the air. I never knew how talented Fagan really is, until I saw him tickle those ivories like that. And I must admit that I did not know what a great guitar player the Boz is. Really nice listening. Thank you.
