    Here’s the thing, these artists are at the top of their field, experienced musicians with music and soul in their bones, and in their blood. They don’t try to outshine each other, they complement each other. Listen to the phrasing of the guitar, note perfect, it comes alive because of the musician, like the guitar is talking, expressing its own view of how magical these people really are together. Donald Fagan’s lingering, soulful piano, my god it doesn’t get any better. Wonderful. All of them.

      I'm 27 and I've been drumming for over 20 years, with two incredible teachers who put me on to Steely Dan way after my dad did, and when I first saw this performance I thought it felt a little slow, but that said, the way man kept everyone in perfect time throughout is incredible! Shannon Forrest did such an amazing job and this is one of the best live performances of Pretzel Logic I've seen. A slow or even slow-ish blues, as a drummer is up there with the hardest tempos to keep to whilst keeping everyone in check, let alone without an in ear click track. Shannon and the rhythm like you said absolutely smashed this tune!

    • @DeelyStanimals
      @DeelyStanimals Год назад +4

      To be fair the drummer has in ears and it sounds possible that he might only have the click. Either way it's deceivingly difficult.....almost nobody's natural pulse is this slow.

      @TheYeetusLord Год назад +1

      @@DeelyStanimals even with in ears playing with a metronome especially a slow or slow-ish one takes more skill than to play to a faster one😄I’ve played live with backing tracks and that adds pressure because you really have to be on point with the click😂

    This song is our favorite concert memory. My wife and I were standing in line outside the U. of Toledo sports arena on Sunday April 21, 1974, waiting for the doors to open for our first Steely Dan concert. It was so unusually warm that all the arena windows were open, when we suddenly heard the sound of "Pretzel Logic" being played live during the band's soundcheck. When they got to the song's bridge, and the line "Well I stepped up on the platform," we heard a voice that we knew was no longer Donald Fagen's. Two hours later, when they played it to a live audience, we could put Michael McDonald's face with that incredible voice we had had heard earlier. That was our introduction to Michael, a year before he would join The Doobie Brothers on tour to replace an ailing Tom Johnston.

      My wife (girlfriend at the time) and I saw this live from the balcony at Lincoln Center in NYC. There were PBS cameras throughout the venue with one about 5 feet to the left of us. I donated $100 to Channel 13, the NYC PBS carrier who sponsored the event, and received two tickets for my generosity. The performance was among the best I've ever seen. After the show ended, Donald Fagan announced to the audience that the recording crew need some songs to be redone. He went on to say that the audience could stay if they wished while they re-recorded some tracks. Almost no one left. Knowing that this would be released for sale at some point, I left anxiously awaiting that time. I snapped up the DVD once it was available and watched it right away. Although the DVD performance is really great, the live event seemed to have so much more energy. I've subsequently seen Steely Dan and Boz Scaggs perform live. Don't miss an opportunity if they play anywhere near your town. BTW If you want to hear a really great version of this song, and many other great performances, get the album, New York Rock and Soul Review. Michael McDonald's portion is amazing. Phoebe Snow (RIP) belts out a couple of powerful songs.

    Steely Dan represents the pinnacle in musicianship and song writing imo, and they are a fave in my music catalogue. With that said, I don't feel like a proper tribute was given to walter becker, the second half of the "brain" behind their genius. We shouldn't forget that. And let's not forget the countless number of studio musicians who were part of their sound, who endured take, after take, after take, after take, to get "it" just right to Donald and Walter’s standards. I think an announcement should be made at each concert with a moment of silence....just sayin', this should be top protocol. I'm sure many would concur. R.I.P. Walter becker.
