This song is loosely based on the drug dealer Owlsley Stanley. He had this outlandish mobile home and always a step ahead of the police. One night they were clearing out quickly from the place they were in, thus the line about "be careful what you carry", and "you are still an outlaw in their eyes." He asked his partner "Is there gas in the car?", and his partner answered "Yes there's gas in the car." Guess what ran out of gas in front of a police car with all their drugs and paraphernalia in it.
See, once upon a time, when there were like, dinosaurs and shit, music was often made by people called "musicians" who could actually play instruments - back before we finally sampled all of them - and they could like, read and write music and stuff and play it, and it often sounded like this. A historical document of great gravitas, this here is. ; )
Jon Herrington tears it up...again. He plays the important hooks from the original solo and adds some of his own ideas. I wonder how he chooses which axe to use on each solo - if he does research into what was used on the original or if he just tries each of his guitars until he gets the sound he wants. Anyhow, he makes it look so easy.

Nice to see Boz play along with an intriguingly tricky song on guitar... didn't appreciate his musicality in the day. Beautiful jazz singer too! But credit to Donald... birthed the most enduring musical narrative songs of the 70's and 80's into our world. Genius...

absolutely in the pocket. sometimes you get a stage full of legends and its a mess because they are stepping on everybody's toes showboating. and sometimes you get these guys, for which there are no equal.
I saw these guys play in a field in DC suburbs Loudoun County. Beautiful day in June? and the crowd was laid back and the vibe seemed to kick the band into a place where they were relaxed and having fun. Boz. McDonald and Fagen would switch off on songs mostly doing hits plus classic covers. Fagen's Steely Dan tunes consistently received the loudest cheers kind of surprised. I love "The Dan."
I can't say "Kid Charlemagne" is my favourite Steely Dan song but it has the most insanely kick-ass repeating closing riff and ending OF ALL TIME! The build-up of energy literally pulls you up by your socks when it's all done!
Pure class, as always. So inspirational to take this all in. When it comes to musicianship with chops and style, it's Steely Dan all the way. Aja is my favourite drive time album.
Your just use to hearing that solo that way. Carlton played great stuff, but Herrington nails the key points live while adding some of his own very cool stuff in. If there isn't any improv. on solo's, it gets stiff and stale. I like a drummer with more flair than this. The guy (sorry I don't remember his name) that plays live with S.D. plays with more passion than this guy. Still, great stuff!!!!! It's nice to see professionally filmed concerts too.
Kerry Friel Purdie played on a lot of the earlier stuff, Carlock's been sitting in with them lately, saw them live last year, but this guy Shannon has some chops, solid too.
I've heard it played many ways, but Carlton owns it his way. I'm all for experimentation - if I want it like the record I'll play the record - but this is one of the all-time great solos, and I've never heard Carlton's version bettered.
Immaculate song one I really always enjoy listening to. Steely Dan are up there with the Beatles in my heart I hope that those that have not realised Steely Dan yet say from younger generations or simply boat missers ..DO get to hear them more and more because once you hear them you can't unhear them. They are that band that understands a real music listener
This song was inspired by Owsley Stanley III, the first "underground" chemist to mass produce high-quality LSD in the 1960s in San Francisco. Walter Becker explained: "It was kind of an Owsleyesque figure that existed in our mind's eye. I think he was based on the idea of the outlaw-acid-chef of the '60s who had essentially outlived the social context of his specialty but of course he was still an outlaw." According to Donal Fagen, the story in this song takes place from 1968-1976. As time goes on, Charlemagne's services fall out of favor, leading to his demise. Steely Dan favorite Larry Carlton played guitar on this track. Donald Fagen said: "He's a real virtuoso. In my opinion he can get around his instrument better than any studio guitarist. He's also quite a good blues player. He did the solos on 'Kid Charlemagne.' The middle solo he did in two takes and we used parts of both. The last solo was straight improvisation." LyRics While the music played, you worked by candlelight Those San Francisco nights You were the best in town Just by chance you crossed the diamond with the pearl You turned it on the world That's when you turned the world around (Did you feel like Jesus?) Did you realize That you were a champion in their eyes? On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene But yours was kitchen-clean Everyone stopped to stare at your technicolor motor home Every A-Frame had your number on the wall You must have had it all You'd go to L.A. on a dare and you'd go it alone (Could you live forever?) Could you see the day? Could you feel your whole world fall apart and fade away? (Get along, get along, Kid Charlemagne) (Get along, Kid Charlemagne) Now your patrons have all left you in the red Your low-rent friends are dead This life can be very strange All those day-glo freaks who used to paint the face They've joined the human race Some things will never change (Son, you were mistaken) You are obsolete Look at all the white men on the street (Get along, get along, Kid Charlemagne) (Get along, Kid Charlemagne) Clean this mess up else we'll all end up in jail Those test-tubes and the scale Just get it all out of here Is there gas in the car? Yes, there's gas in the car I think the people down the hall know who you are (Careful what you carry) 'Cause the man is wise You are still an outlaw in their eyes (Get along, get along, Kid Charlemagne) (Get along, Kid Charlemagne) Writer/s: DONALD JAY FAGEN, WALTER CARL BECKER Publisher: Universal Music Publishing Group
Save for the obvious, cocaine is cut with kerosene, whereas acid is not...maybe a lyrical mistake or maybe Owlsley was cutting cocaine with kerosene? So many possibilities
@@picardmadeoff1068 it's simply poetic license for a fun and memorable lyric. the idea is that the stuff people other than owsley were making was garbage.

I was there too...all I had to do was become a member of PBS, where this was televised on Great Performances, and we got two great seats for $60. Truly the best live performance I've seen in my 60+ years!
My Fave , done again superbly .. Best band Ever
This is a genuine SuperGroup.
Best concert I've ever saw.
And I have seen lots of legends.
Just bought the dvd.
Thanks for posting,really enjoyed it.
Nice to see Boz play along with an intriguingly tricky song on guitar... didn't appreciate his musicality in the day. Beautiful jazz singer too! But credit to Donald... birthed the most enduring musical narrative songs of the 70's and 80's into our world. Genius...
These are guys who can flat out play....Show these young crumbs who's still the boss's. I am so down with the Dukes . even though I was born in 71 its better than much of whats new right now. maybe a CD of new tunes too...........
absolutely in the pocket. sometimes you get a stage full of legends and its a mess because they are stepping on everybody's toes showboating. and sometimes you get these guys, for which there are no equal.
Without a doubt a line up of some of the finest musicians!!
That never gets old!
Love that man! I miss Walter B...
Amazing LIVE performance of this song, some of the best musicians in the world.
A master class--live, that's live.
These guys set the Bar way high for the rest of us mortal pickers..........absolutely fun!
+gateswf Nice ending
Brilliant - no one will ever play that solo like Carlton, though.
Kerry Friel
Purdie played on a lot of the earlier stuff, Carlock's been sitting in with them lately, saw them live last year, but this guy Shannon has some chops, solid too.
I've heard it played many ways, but Carlton owns it his way. I'm all for experimentation - if I want it like the record I'll play the record - but this is one of the all-time great solos, and I've never heard Carlton's version bettered.
Dean Wuksta "Sitting in"?!? Carlock has held the chair since 2003!!
Dean Wuksta bernard purdie has a simple but unique style
What a song writer
Immaculate song one I really always enjoy listening to. Steely Dan are up there with the Beatles in my heart
I hope that those that have not realised Steely Dan yet say from younger generations or simply boat missers ..DO get to hear them more and more because once you hear them you can't unhear them. They are that band that understands a real music listener
I just can't imagine anyone giving this or anything else these masters of music lay down a thumbs down!!!
This song was inspired by Owsley Stanley III, the first "underground" chemist to mass produce high-quality LSD in the 1960s in San Francisco. Walter Becker explained: "It was kind of an Owsleyesque figure that existed in our mind's eye. I think he was based on the idea of the outlaw-acid-chef of the '60s who had essentially outlived the social context of his specialty but of course he was still an outlaw."
According to Donal Fagen, the story in this song takes place from 1968-1976.
The last solo was straight improvisation."
LyRics
While the music played, you worked by candlelight
Those San Francisco nights
You were the best in town
Just by chance you crossed the diamond with the pearl
You turned it on the world
That's when you turned the world around
(Did you feel like Jesus?)
Did you realize
That you were a champion in their eyes?
On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene
But yours was kitchen-clean
Everyone stopped to stare at your technicolor motor home
Every A-Frame had your number on the wall
You must have had it all
You'd go to L.A. on a dare and you'd go it alone
(Could you live forever?)
Could you see the day?
Could you feel your whole world fall apart and fade away?
(Get along, get along, Kid Charlemagne)
(Get along, Kid Charlemagne)
Now your patrons have all left you in the red
Your low-rent friends are dead
This life can be very strange
All those day-glo freaks who used to paint the face
They've joined the human race
Some things will never change
(Son, you were mistaken)
You are obsolete
Look at all the white men on the street
(Get along, get along, Kid Charlemagne)
(Get along, Kid Charlemagne)
Clean this mess up else we'll all end up in jail
Those test-tubes and the scale
Just get it all out of here
Is there gas in the car?
Yes, there's gas in the car
I think the people down the hall know who you are
(Careful what you carry)
'Cause the man is wise
You are still an outlaw in their eyes
(Get along, get along, Kid Charlemagne)
(Get along, Kid Charlemagne)

Save for the obvious, cocaine is cut with kerosene, whereas acid is not...maybe a lyrical mistake or maybe Owlsley was cutting cocaine with kerosene? So many possibilities
@@picardmadeoff1068 it's simply poetic license for a fun and memorable lyric. the idea is that the stuff people other than owsley were making was garbage.
@@romulus_ Well said! BTW, I've never mixed cocaine with acid but mushrooms and cocaine go well together under certain circumstances...
Without context, I had no idea what this song meant. Now, it makes perfect sense. That Walter Becker quote illuminated me. Thanks.
Owsley 4 ways were a favorite
