My biggest online pet peeve is “I’m new to fantasy” or “my 13-year-old wants to get into fantasy” or “I’m trying to get my partner into fantasy” and the top answer is Malazan or WoT. Like I get it, but I kinda like you said, especially with Malazan, that’s a huge time commitment and very dense fantasy. With the teenager stuff, my partner was an advanced reader, he read a lot of adult things when he was young, but I was very *typical.* Why suggest things so dense and long to new readers that could put them off to fantasy? It drives me crazy that people can’t step out of their own shoes when making recommendations.

Not saying that you are completely wrong, but to give a counterpoint, just because you start reading with fantasy doesn't mean that you didn't read before. I basically started reading with Karl May (german author of around 75 adventure and travel novels) at age 5, followed by all kinds of myths and legends and historic novels. I also read early sci-fi (Hans Dominik, Jules Verne), classics like Twain and Cooper and my first real fantasy book probably was Neverending Story by Michael Ende (that or C.S. Lewis Narnia, not quite sure) before I stumbled about Tolkien's work.
With this persepective in mind, I tend to give recommendations based on if I think it's a great story you might love, not based on things like complexity, size or denseness. And just because you're 13 doesn't mean that you are dumb and need to be protected from stuff like WoT or even Malazan (I remember that , again, Michael Ende was often critizised to be too difficult for young readers, which he felt was a severe insult to those young readers' intelligence). I mean Harry Potter is a pretty huge series with thick tomes and increasingly adult themes and it brought a whole new generation of readers to appreciate books.

@@Eluarelon That's the thing (or not, depending). If you're reading through several volumes, then there's *something* worthwhile that keeps you reading. And if that thing completely eludes you, then you just skip that series.

It's fascinating how you can basically predict that every fantasy book recommendation thread, regardless of the actual request, will have Sanderson, Abercrombie, and Malazan, and if there's any indication that the request is even sort of scifi adjacent, Red Rising.

I am totally with you on the frustration with these very reply-guy type answers. I am a librarian and this is part of what professional librarians are trained in. Some librarians specialize in readers advisory and have speciality areas. It's important to find out which part of the book the reader is looking to match: characters, tone, theme, setting, etc. No offense to Reddit but everyone should have access to book-recommending experts freely available in their community (in the U.S.) or one of the many readers advisory blog posts librarians create on library websites. I get that people can find recs all over, but it hurts my professional pride when people get bad help and I know there are trained professionals made available.

Regarding popular series. When someone asks for a recommendation and explicitly says something along those lines: "Hey I tried X and did not like it, what would you recommend that is not that?". I find many times that there are comments saying "Well, you should try book 2 though". I'm like... I'm sure they've already thought about it... And it gets worse when they are told "to wait till book 4, when the series gets amazing, promise". I get that some series take their time developing, and sometimes more than one installment is needed to get the feel of what is happening (Yes, I'm looking at you WoT), but I find it rather unhelpful to recommend more books in the same series, unless there is a clear explanation of why they should not give in.

I find it frustrating that a lot of fantasy recommendations are very repetitive (often almost exclusively the ones listed in this video). There’s so much more out there. And when new people are giving the genre a try those repetitive (and sometimes aggressive) recommendations turn them off when they might actually like the genre - Either other book’s in the genre, or maybe they just want a taste and to dip their toe in (so a 14 book series recommendation might intimidate them as a starting point).

I'm aware of any and all things SJM, I see every post, it's on my radar, I'm not interested in reading ACOTAR, and I specifically said in my post that I wanted suggestions that weren't those authors or series for a reason. Grinds my gears. 😅

Yeah the person with the food analogy saying they shouldn’t seek out more of the thing they liked is annoying. I’m all for variety but that literally wasn’t the question. I really like different mythology related stories (Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese) so if I were to ask for more recommendations with any of those mythologies, and someone said I should branch out, I’d be pretty annoyed. I read a lot of other different things but if I want more Korean inspired stories, give me some suggestions or don’t reply, it’s quite simple.
(Suggestions welcome tho, I want all of the mythology 😂 plus I have recs if anyone wants any)

Thanks, those are some great points. There are actually 3 different series that I have recently fallen in love with that instead of looking for recommendations for books that sound similar, I should be more specific about those aspects of those stories that I would like to find in other series. That's something to think about. I would love to find more family sagas in a fantasy setting, or a series where there are characters from magic versus characters from a science based side interacting, or I'd love to see a character who goes about solving medical mysteries in a fantasy setting. That would be so cool.

Recommendations can be tricky. You need to know exactly _what_ a person liked about a particular work to understand what themes, styles, etc they're actually looking for. Then you've got all kinds of differing interpretations and focal points on themes that stand out within a work. Even if someone explains a recommendation, you might not see the overlap because you've taken very different things from those particular works.

The bare minimum we can do is look through other replies before leaving our own, in case someone already recommended the author we were going to mention. And take into account that people have probably heard of the most popular authors. I once looked up recommendations for books similar to The Lord of the Rings, curious what the thing every fantasy gets compared to would get compared to. While there were a couple I definitely agreed with (McKiernan's Mithgar started out as straight-up fanfiction) some websites just give you a cross-section of the fantasy genre as "similar to Tolkien." The Broken Earth trilogy and First Law trilogy were on there.

I think as far as your first point goes, problem is that some authors develop kind of a cult following, so no matter what someone asks for, they'll always try to convert you to their cause. And the way the social networks work adds to that problem, because you automatically get clicks, likes or comments when you do that, while at the same time, if you happen to actually give a correct answer (for example a book that meets all the criteria asked for) that lies out of the mainstream, you simply get ignored or drowned out by the noise the other people are creating. You see that with Sanderson, but also more general with the way TikTok constantly hypes books that are mediocre at best as far as writing skills, content ans general message go. And I think that can probably lead to posts like you mentioned in your second example, that someone becomes so fed ab with ma(a)ss always winning over quality, that he starts ranting about that whole universe of higher quality books that you should read instead (I'm too old to even try or care, but to be very honest, my sympathies completely lie with whoever wrote that rant, because while not being helpful, they are still completely right about it).
I'm in that facebook group that I really love for the way they treat eachother with respect and friendliness (at least 99% of the time) and where the mods do an exemplary job to filter out trolls and troublemakers. but damn would I love that group even more if they were a bit more open about the genre and would stop presenting things like Sanderson, ACOTAR and Red Rising as the answer to everything.

"no one gave me anything" - did you deserve such a gift? We often have to go out and seek such knowledge on our own, is my point. What is "like the Silo series"? It would depend on what you found in the series that engaged with you, made you go "MORE" and want to find similar stuff - but similar to what particular part of the books, what hooked into your brain and pulled you by your nose through the series- was it the plot, the world, the prose, the characters? When you manage to put those things into words, your feedback will be so much better. As the Bible likes to remind us,
"A man reaps what he sows.” (Galatians 6:7).
although I would guess a lot of the sowing was done by freaking women, and a lot of the reaping too, so Paul should think a bit about that, silly man.
But never mind Paul, back to the basics in a more modern, digital package: If you give little input, the output will disappoint you or right-out fool you into reading some batshit crazy books you never asked for. And that is life. And you should not be afraid to read books you thought would be good, but that disappointed you, because books are like other people you meet in life, you do not know what they will bring to the table before both of you are seated and the conversation begins. And if it bores you, confuses you or troubles you, is it the book or is it you?
In your search you have several options available that was totally missing when I was young and had to ask my older brother for help instead. You can listen to excerpts on audible, you can read samples on amazon, watch tons of book-tube videos, and you can ask in any forum on the Internet that seems to contain an audience of somewhat literate citizens. Just remember to apply a narrow and concise point to your questions. Good luck in your search!

    • @Fiberedfolios
      @Fiberedfolios Месяц назад +2

I tried checking through goodreads, tried out the first bit of a couple books, I checked Reddit, I am part of a couple book rec groups on fb and listed the style of things I like in the series. I didn’t end up finding anything similar. Personally I am someone who like to research so I do put in not maximum effort but moderate/mid effort into it, I do absolutely understand what you mean though as I do see a lot of people not putting in any effort at all. I try to out in some and then seek out information from the couple places I know of myself.
Personally in the silo series I really liked the pacing, I loved the building through the series of finding out what were being told isn’t the truth (so kinda like the government/higher power pointing you in another direction) I really like story driven novels so I liked that., I also enjoyed the separation of class and how everyone dealt with that through the series.
I guess I hoped that the sites had a better algorithm for the suggestions but that’s likely not their focus on goodreads. It happens.
Lots of books in the world are not for something people, nothing wrong with me because I am bored or don’t enjoy a book, we all have different gauges. Some people really enjoy a book that has to do with really complex worlds, my brain can’t handle that mostly because I have other issues working against me, I try not to DNF books which is why I do excerpts and reading 1-2 chapter samples. Just because I don’t enjoy a book doesn’t mean that there’s anything wrong with that book, it just wasn’t for me.
      Hope your day is great!

I understand how this can be frustrating. However, I may be odd, but if I ask for a recommendation after I liked a certain book, I'm not looking to read another book just like the one I finished. I want something different. I want another "good" book or series, not one with the same setting, characters, themes, etc. of what I just read. I appreciate expanding my horizons and frankly, I'm so tired of cookie cutter/carbon copy books in ALL genres, so an out of the blue suggestion can be really cool.

omgsh I hate this... As sometimes books are marketed as one thing and then I read it and I'm like no... how in the heck was that what they chose to market a book as! Also just because you like one series or book from an author doesn't mean your automatically going to like others by them... books have different vibes, magic systems, setting etc. So just recommending the same author doesn't really do the reader any good unless your going to explain why your doing it.

omg that part about people ignoring the request to say "well this isn't what you asked for so here's something completely different to change it up"--NO! that's not what i asked for. if i wanted action thriller, i'll ask for it but i'm asking for bipoc romantasies because it's what i'm in the mood for HENCE WHY I ASKED FOR IT LOL it happens a lot in video game communities too like i'll ask for healthy romance otome and someone will be like "welllll this definitely isn't healthy but have you tried this mafia dark romance where they abuse the crap out of the main character? 😃" 🗡️🗡️ makes me so upsetti spaghetti like are you sure y'all are readers because the reading comprehension is not comprehending 😂😂

I might have missed it, @Elliot but have you read other Laini Taylor? I came across a series of hers I’d never seen in my local bookshop (can’t recall the name) and honestly had no idea she’d written beyond Strange the Dreamer .. was wondering if you’ve ever covered them!

I recently finished playing through Elden Ring, and I love the lore/aesthetics in the game. I believe Elliot has recommended the Fallen Gods trilogy for anyone interested in a similar world, and I'm definitely going to check it out. Can anyone offer anything else related?

I don’t have any comparable recommendations for these as I haven’t read any of those yet.
I would offer defense for some of the first example commenters; there are an unbelievable amount of people who do NOT look things up and simply rely on lists, asking on social media posts, and asking in forums. Now wording it that simple of “More {insert author name}” is not helpful at all.
However, I’ve seen many times where folks (including myself) ask if they’ve read such-and-such (listing some of that author’s other books) and it is very helpful as the OP had no idea they wrote anything else. It seems unnecessary, but it all matters in the wording and the situation. Of course, it is unnecessary if the original inquiry notes that they’ve already read the author’s other work.

I feel like in every post on reddit asking for recommendations for fantasy books there is always at least one Sanderson and Malazan comment even if there is nothing similar to what the person is asking for. Reddit is the least helpful place I experienced for recommendations 😂
Nowadays, I get my recommendations from friends that know my taste (the most accurate) or people online that have similar taste to mine.
Side note: I can see why people recommend the Name of the Wind to Hobb fans, but I am so tired of it especially because I hate it 😂 To be honest, I think most people are aware of that book anyway so it isn't really a good recommendation.

Yeah fantasy subreddit is an awfully closed off ivory tower where the only fantasy authors that "count" are: Sanderson, Erikson, Jordan, Rothfuss, Abercrombie, Butcher, Martin and token woman of the circle, Hobb. Sometimes also Weeks and Brett will be recommended. If you really insist at something else, Gwynne and Ryan.
They will also accuse anyone who refuses to read those authors and wants something else as "not a real fantasy fan". Also very commonly according to that place YA and romantasy will be dismissed as "not real fantasy".
It's a closed ecosystem where nobody reads other books than some self-proclaimed "canon" they created, nobody reads new releases or authors who debuted after 2010, and everyone laments about "ye olde good times" without noticing the world moved on.
I've seen completely unironical claims that modern fantasy is all about Sanderson and Martin and epic and grimdark, not noticing the mountains of releases in the categories of romantasy, cozy fantasy, retellings, gothic fantasy, historical fantasy, contemporary fantasy, etc.
It's absolutely atrocious how the handful of loudest voices took over the biggest fantasy subreddit and everyone who wants something else had to splinter away (there are already bustling subreddits for cozyfantasy, fantasyromance, YAlit and so forth, all the types of fantasy shunned on the "main" subreddit).

okie but what actually SHOULD I read if I loved Hobbs' Farseer trilogy and am somewhat new to fantasy? 🤔
(for context: i've also greatly enjoyed martha wells' witch king, shannon chakraborty's amina al-sirafi, the téméraire series from naomi novik, and the first three books of isoiaf (quit due to good characters constantly being killed off)- not perfect books but what i loved were the characters and their dynamics. also i will read ya from time to time but greatly prefer adult fiction)

You should continue with Hobb's other books if you are curious about Fitz's whole story (it's amazing!). I started my fantasy journey with Hobb too and she's one of my favourite author to this day. The reading order:
Farseer trilogy -> Liveship Traders trilogy -> The Tawny Man trilogy -> The Rain Wild Chronicles -> The Fitz and the Fool trilogy.

I spit out my drink when you said Lightbringer as a recommendation for someone who likes Malazan. Those two series could not be more different. Lightbringer is ultimately a religious story, and and Malazan is absolutely not that. 😂
