**a reminder that I recommend books, even if they didn't personally work for me, as I know different stories work for different people 📕

Recommendation fails sounds really fun! I saw one on IG where an SJM fan wanted a recommendation and someone said Watership Down
I think an underrepresented fantasy series is The Song of Shattered Sands series by Bradley P Beaulieu. It’s a middle eastern inspired world, old and new gods interfering with the world, and complex characters as the series progresses. More people should check it out, it’s so good!
If you like the whole "I will tell you my life"-thing, Jenn Lyons' The Ruin of Kings has this as well as the unreliable narrator trope.
Loved this series!
The Mask of Mirrors: like The Lies of Locke Lamora, but with significant female characters! Can recommend. I also loved The Ninth Rain.
The Will of the Many and Red Rising are both fantastic!!
I loved The Mask of Mirrors so much and I reccomend the similar vibe book "The blacktongue thief"
You’re absolutely right if I’m not engaging with the characters in the book, I’m not engaging with the Book
I am reading Rise of the Ranger now. I am really enjoying it. I love the characters and the high stakes. Epic / classic fantasy is my favorite!
I enjoy Anthony Ryan. Any book attached to the word "heist" always gets my attention. Thanks!!!
Oh wow, I definitely don’t think Sanderson and Williams feel similar. I enjoyed both books but I don’t think they feel the same.
YESSSSS!!!!! Bloodsong!!!! One of my very favourite books! I LOVE Vaelin. ❤
I hated Name of the Wind and DNF’d it.
Agree with you on Name of the Wind 100%. I was so excited to read it because it was given to me and told I’d love it but it bored me senseless. I had to force myself to finish it, hoping I’d understand the hype but never saw the appeal of Kvothe.
Thank you so much for including The Mask of Mirrors! I love it because the world feels so fresh and they made all the characters feel unique. Vargo, Ren, and Grey are all good people having to make bad decisions in order to fulfill their personal goals in Nadežra, while unintentionally aligning themselves against forces in the city that would mean to do them harm… the series is a brilliant concept that was inspired by a TTRPG campaign that the authors played in. I repeat: I LOVE it. I recommend it to lots of people who want morally grey people who want to support #1 aka themselves, but also care about their city. I cried so much at the end of the series I had come to love by the end💙💙💙💙💙
I hope this convinces some people to try it! The authors also have a discord where you can talk about the series.
I finished Ninth Rain this morning and it was so good. Thanks for always recommending it!
Mask of Mirrors is a great book, I enjoyed the world building alot
so many of your book recs sound truly FASCINATING!! i'll definitely check them out!!
Great recs! I'd say that if you like the literary fantasy, the flowery prose almost poetic writing and a narrator that tells the story my recomendation would be the standalone novel "Night circus". It also has a loose magic system that is great. The Fionavar tapestry trilogy from Guy Gavriel K is also a great one but I would probably pitch it as a cross between something like literary fantasy and classic fantasy.
Thank you for this video ❤❤
I really liked this video.
I read blood song in December and absolutely LOVED it ! Currently reading book 2. Would totally recommend 🤗
Thank you for this! Just finished Arc of the scythe a few days ago and been in a bit of a reading slump but I can't wait to dive into your recs!
Mask of Mirrors! Let’s go!
When you were describing mask of mirrors and the lies of Locke Lamora (I’ve not read either yet, but I have my holds on them at the library!) it reminded me of sword catcher by Cassandra Claire
Such a great video topic!
I really liked this video and found it helpful!
Great Video!
This is awesome, I discovered Sanderson last year and right now I'm reading Ninth Rain. It really is great.
Where can I find all this artwork tied to scenes from fantasy books? I wish more high fantasy came with artwork and drawings instead of just maps; often it's hard to picture certain scenes in my head.
As somebody with hypophantasia I agree! I'm unable to imagine things I've never seen before.
People usually don’t do this as it costs more money publishers don’t really want to spend for books 😅
tbh you could probably give AI a prompt and it would generate something for you
I read Ninth Rain last December and haven’t shut up about it ever since 😂 ITS SO DAMN GOOD. I finished The Poison Song last week and im still processing hahah that book had me so stressed…
Never would have thought to colonist to WoK but I definitely see your points!
I absolutely loved Blood Song. I ran across it by accident and I’ve read the whole series and other stories from Anthony Ryan. Such a good series.
I need the ninth rain!
I agree with your assessment of Name of the Wind and Kvothe. I also read both Name of the Wind books and their novellas and just kind of felt...meh at the end. Its not bad by any means but it was a huge time investment that rarely felt like it took off.
Ninth rain is on sale for kindle today! Yay! This video came at the right time lol
yeah that one is pretty underrated
I have Rise of the Ranger and I’m very looking forward to reading it
Im half way through Lies of Locke Lamora. Im not sure why, but Im not loving it, but I'm liking it. I thought this would be an all time favorite. 🤷♀️
I would LOVE to know more about books like Kings of the Wyld. I loved that monster fighting band of brothers! ⚔
Every time you describe Blood Song it reminds me of thr first Halo book. Thr first volume is on how the Spartan program is created, the kids recruited, trained, and their first mission.
Blood Song was great! Rest of Trilogy? Not so much
Love seeing Mask of Mirrors get recommended!!
If you like Blood Song you should read Sword in Storm by Gemmell.
You nailed it! I’m reading my first Sanderson “the way of kings” & I’m about 400 pages in and I just couldn’t put my finger on what about his writing style is preventing me from being fully engrossed and it’s because it does feel sci-fi ish …and I don’t like sci-fi 🤣. I’m going to continue but I can stop asking myself “why is this not working as much as I know it should??🤔”
I've only read Tress (YA meh) and the first Mistborn book, and I struggle with Sanderson; being engaged with his writing. I can't really put my finger on what it is, I think a mix of things. Funny, as yesterday someone recommended a 'grittier' Sanderson to me in 'The Way of Kings', but honestly, I'm just not sure if Sanderson is my cup of tea. He's just missing that 'something something' but I might give him a final chance with The Way of Kings on Libby.
If you're reading WOK, I'll just add that it's a massive slow burn. Of course, it may just not be for you, but I wasn't 100% sold midway through it either. It gets quite a bit better imo.
I think that's exactly why I personally took to it so quickly, I'm a big sci-fi person. That said, I love seeing people figure out just what exactly works, or doesn't work, in a book for them. Those things aren't immediately obvious.
@@studiosrp8860 I agree! after the 500 page mark I was into it! I felt like it became less “sciencey world building” & more character work & lore
@b2ksflyhoney That's awesome! So glad you liked it! Welcome to the fandom lol. Hope you choose to continue because Words of Radiance is great.
If you like the Cosmere, I'd suggest Greenbone Saga by Fonda Lee

Will Wight’s Cradle Series is a favorite of mine. The first book Unsouled, took me a bit to get into, but by the end of the book, I couldn’t stop reading (or rather listening as I mostly listen to audiobooks). Bonus: The whole 12 book series is out.
As a WoT fan that hasn't been able to find anything epic to read all I can say is ... DID YOU SAY 12!!!! 🤩
@@Hassy171717 sorry, books are much shorter, but yes there are 12
I think Empire of the vampire is one of those let me tell you my life books as well. Jay Christoff did a good job but that I suppose I haven’t read it completely but it seems to be a good book. It’s been going around Book tube for a long while.
I just bought your book on kindle
I’ve read all but the rise of the ranger!
As far as hyped vs underhyped for those that liked The Hunger Games style post-apocalypse I'd really recommend "Blood Red Road" by Moira Young. It's basically Mad Max in the American Wild West. Solid characters and pacing. Plus I think it has a way more unique and well-rounded representation of a sibling/sisterly bond compared to HG.
Ooh i wasn't notified lol I just got lucky.
Empire of the vampire, first binding, ruin of kings!
Fun fact The Ninth Rain is .99 cents on kindle right now!
Hey Ell! Have you read Dune? I just finished it is my first sci-fi (am a fantasy girl) answer i need something else like it! I am scared for dune messiah though
Will of the Many made me think of the Codex Alera Series
If you continue on the age of myth series the women become the main characters and out number the men
Hi i have a film script based on the Magus Book would you like to review it ?
Gonna give my 2 cents on Rise of the Ranger as I'm about 150 pages from the end of Book 1. It's incredibly generic and boring. Plot is your typical Evil elf starts war, gets sealed away, timeskip, followers that were hiding out start making moves, blah blah blah. There's like 6 POVs, so there's been negative characterization. For me the plot needs to massively improve for me to continue to Book 2. Especially considering this is a 9 book series.
Blood song was so good and the second one the tower lord but then I read the last book it was so bad in my opinion it’s almost like it was written by a completely different person.😢
I agree with every "this or that" except for the Stormlight and Winnowing ...the latters' pacing is no where near as good as Stormlights...
Can someone recommend me books? After reading the whole stormlight archive and the cosmere books I’ve been in a reading slump coz they don’t compare to Sanderson’s books 😅
I always either drop the books I pick up or rate them 3 stars.
The only thing I managed to finish but also love is the first law trilogy.
I tried to read the lies of Locke lamora but dropped it.
I tried to read the name of the wind but I hated the MC so much I don’t get how it’s highly praised 😫
Eternally baffled by Rothfuss even being taken seriously as an author, much less being considered the author of a classic.
It's the perfect example of a con job, where he writes in such a way as to bamboozle the reader into thinking the story is amazing, but the words say nothing.
That is how I feel about George rr Martin
@weezie422
Totally agree. One of the most overrated authors of all time.
They're both great at prose but everything they say with it is terrible.
Not book related but please tell me what's on your lips
Don't waste your time and $ on the Age of Myth series. All I will say is the first 4 books are great, however plummets after that😢
Age of Myth series was 💩
