The "part two" I mentioned possibly doing at the end has actually already been done--and confusingly, I posted it before this one. If you're interested in more staples to non-staples recs, though, you can find that here: ruclips.net/video/JKCDiLxe3rE/видео.html

Robin McKinley might be a fine classic fantasy author to start with. She has a young person's feel in many of her novels but not necessarily what we would call YA today if that makes sense. Her writing style is maybe more adult but beautiful. Also, try Patricia A. McKillip. She's very mythic and fairy-tale like and very lyrical in the way she writes.

    • @catsandbats77

I love Patricia McKillip's writing. I discovered both of these authors at the same time as they were next to each other in the fantasy area at my library. I was hooked. I'd go back to the library and pick up more of their books to read through them.

For those liking fantasy with a (pre)medieval feel to it: Deverry series by Katharine Kerr.
I also recommend the Krondor series by Raymond E Feist and the Shannara series by Terry Brooks.

I would recommend Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson to Sabriel fans. Not based on necromancers but just *vibes* and also demon cats. 😂

    • @andreabootsma8478

yes but also - Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson, does have tiered death magic & a young female protagonist somewhat thrown into a situation outside her depth (so like Sabriel specifically)

I have one of these, sort of... There's a series by JV Jones that I don't hear anyone talking about called Sword of Shadows. It has four books as of now.
And it reminds a lot of A Song of Ice and Fire, but specifically to the North parts of Martin books (Winterfell, the Wall, the lands beyond the Wall). There are clans, blood and dark magic, lots of alliances, treason and backstabbing... it's fairly grim.

For those that want Wheel of Time's epic story, but less filler, try Faithful and the Fallen by John Gwynne and the Licanius Trilogy by James Islington. Faithful has a large cast and epic battles, but it also has great characters that you actually like a couple of well done romances (unlike Wheel of Time). Or if you love Lord of the Rings, try Memory Sorrow and Thorn by Tad Williams, the inspiration for Song of Ice and Fire.

What is it with authors and waiting years to publish the final book? Like, I have a fave romantasy that is incomplete. It's been almost 4 years since the penultimate came out, and the last one was supposed to be published in late 2021. The author pushed it back because of a personal matter, and it's been almost 2 years since she last updated the fans on its progress.

Kristen Britain's books (main 7) average 3-5 years between publication which is a long time but personally, she hasn't let me down yet! Her last 3 books are all over 700 pages so they've felt worth the wait lol she's announced recently that she's completed her draft of the next book! And she's said there's 1 more book after to tie up the series arc! So we're nearing the end! Good time for new readers to start and not have to endure the waiting like many of us have!

Finally! That is good news. I really like her writing and characters but it is so ridiculous leaving cliffhangers unnecessarily for years and years.
I will probably never read Game of Thrones for this reason. I need to have closed endings or at least some decent open endings in a book series instead of teasing cliffhangers.

Hello, I've been reading the green Rider series for a long time now. Unfortunately I am almost done reading the last book lady winter light I'm enjoying the book and will be very sad when it ends. I was wondering if you have read lady Winter Light and how you liked it?
I have been following your reviews for a while now and find them enjoyable. I mostly like Epic Fantasy. Question for you, do you find that new Epic Fantasy is becoming more rare? I think there's a case to be made with the popularity of shorter ebooks. What do you think? Take care and keep up the great work.

This comment is less for Elliott, as I've mentioned this author before, but more for viewers. My lesser known rec for Abercrombie (especially for younger readers, lesser known but a legend (pun intended) within fantasy) is David Gemmell. He was grimdark (a genre name a can't stand) before grimdark, when it was called Heroic Fantasy. Short books. Great characters. Not much descriptive text about the trees etc, just sharp, concise, too the point action and character oriented stories. Recommend just starting in publication order of his Drenai Saga books, or his Jon Shannow trilogy, which is where I started.
