@@VirtualTech how much range...Chinese EVs - like the BYD seagull - have at most 200-210 miles, adjusted for EPA standards. There isn't any car under 25k that can go 300+ miles consistently yet and most of them have poor build quality.

Came here to write this. My girlfriend is driving this car (and loves it). It is a wonderful little city car. Of course it’s not a long range model, but do you really need that? We’re living in Germany, where you don’t have the very long drives on a daily basis and she is getting around for a week without charging. Of course it has some more plastic, but it’s fine, you get the same in the small ICE cars.
European here. My mum has this car. The lease is costing her 100€ / month and the electricity costs her about 100€ / year. She uses it for daily commute and normal life stuff around town. She only needs to charge it overnight once a week. You can't beat that.

You go for the base model because you wanna safe money, so you get a 23,8 kWh battery with 95hp 190km/118mi range combined 257km/159mi city only. You get as options: -The exterior color Red by (RED) 500€ -The Comfort-Package for 1500€ including: heated exterior mirrors, arm rest up front, heated wiper elements on the front windscreen, 50/50 folding rear seats, heated front seats, a hight ajustable driver seat, 360° "Drone View" reverse camera, and a blind spot assist -And a bigger Mode 2 Charging cable for 250€ So you end up currently at around 27.000€ (because of a special discount Fiat offers you right know, because EV sales dropped in all over Europe) you still have 15 inch steel wheels with hubcaps and halogen headlights, both are in a package that would cost another 1500€ but again it's a mini-compact car so you might not need it. You lease the car for 48 month/ 4 years. The back wants to make 1500€ profit, so the car costs 29.500€. Now here's were it gets interesting, and how leases in general work. You order the car and it comes 5 month later. Your car gets registered on your name and you sign a few papers and pay the destination fee. Then the vehicle documents are gonna get send to the bank, because they pay the 27.000€ for the car. Now let's say the bank calcutes that the car is worth 19.000€ after the 4 years that you used the car, so it's 27.000-19.000=8000 and the 8000€ get devided by 48 because of the lease month you'd end up at 222 a month. That still to much, so the banks just use a final rate. of 3000€ an you'd already end up a 105€ a month. They could also just calcute the car higher or when the lease is over they calcute potential scrates and damages higher than expected. So to lease a car it's usally just interesting as a company to avoid the 19% product taxes.
Marq does zero research for his videos. That's something he could have easily found if he played around in the car infotainment. He spent the entire video saying theres no $25k EVs even though outside of America they are plentiful.
Remember this is a European car, made for European cities. The cars here are in general smaller than in the US. Parking spaces are narrow and small. And trust me (I'm from the Netherlands). Driving a Tesla Model 3 through Amsterdam is already challenging, let alone in small cities in Italy. So, it's also made this small on purpose. I'm absolutely sure batteries will become cheaper and smaller. The amounts of rare metals in batteries is declining, so they become cheaper as this is the main cost driver.
That and also development cost is probably a huge thing. Yes they have all been out for awhile but it still feels like someone is making it the first time every new model that launches. I don't know exactly what is going on with the BYD everyone is mentioning but if i had to guess besides labor costs being insanely low they just stuck to basics and exactly the things that work, everyone keeps trying to reinvent what a electric car should be before we have even settled on a basic standard (i mean in regards to interface etc, all the little things.) I believe by comparison the BYD is a electric tractor that is comfortable enough, but thats fine, at least they seemed to crack some standard to driving down costs.

@@pvic6959the Model 3 is simply too big for the roads and parking spots in Amsterdam. And I would say Amsterdam is a quite spacious city by Italian standards. Try Rome, Naples or Genoa. I think american drivers have an understandable problem in even wondering why those cars are so small. They may think it is a style choice or a cutting-cost need. But they are designed like that because it's mandatory to be used.
@@onthefence928 What do you mean? The majority of cars are foreign in the US. In the top 10 car sales brands there is Ford on 2nd place and Chevrolet on 3rd. The rest are Japanese or Korean. 8th place is Jeep but they are owned by Stellantis Group.
@@razvanlex He means that a lot of the vehicles that are cheap that aren't available in the US in the first place due to not being sold here have a 25 year import "ban" on them. The only way to get the ban on one model of vehicle lifted is by spending an exorbitant amount of money, effort, and time to get a single model approved to be imported, including crash testing, emmisions testing, and other safety/environmental testing of the like, and its coming out of the person's wallet that's trying to import it. At least 6 figures for a "cheap" imported car less than 25 years old.. It's dumb

Funny enough, you can still buy for 10000€ less the combustion engine version with a the triple of range. I mean. I don’t get why. Because of R&D? It’s old tech! It’s just to normalise a price that shouldn’t be normalised. For less range should be cheaper.
There are a few things I noticed when watching this. 1) It does have Android Auto and Apple Carplay. 2) It does have 1-pedal driving. Just put it in Range mode. 3) The startup and shutdown jingles are much less creepy in america. In the UK, it's a different one and it's really eerie lol 4) My version of this car has 90 miles of range. And it's more than enough for me. 5) The back seats are tiny, yeah. But I wanna quickly give a shoutout to my Mum, who sat in the back of this car when I did my driving test and she somehow managed. 6) My biggest gripe is that the seats don't go up or down.
If you spend €3000 more and get the prima version all those problems (seat height adjustment etc) have been solved. Also, the chime can be turned off through the settings. Marques, it's really disappointing how little research you did for this car.
Man, we have Tata Punch EV in India priced roughly at $15000. 1. Around 300kms (186 miles) of real-life range 2. Android Auto and Apple Car play 3. Different levels of regeneration 4. Good looks 5. Proper 5 seater Base variant comes even cheaper around $13000. Then, there is Tata Tiago which starts at $10000 with no screens, 250kms of range but still a proper 5 seater
Citroen eC3 is coming out right now in EU for about $25,000 and it's a decent small 5-door SUV/Cross Over with 200miles of range. Comfortable, save and fits 4 to 5 people. So question answered. The US Car market is so limited, that's the problem.
Imagine this. You live in Italy, you have a lot of low emissions zones, work in the city centre, small parking spaces, you need a zippy car that is electric and costs less than a Tesla. Now the cheaper options start to make some sense, especially if you don’t do more than 5-20km a day, as it often happens around the EU. It is clearly an economy car, but as far as these cars go, this seems like a solid choice overall. You get some extra features here and there, a decent design, some thought went into all the parts. I’d say it cannot make sense in the USA, that’s for sure.
According to American Driving Survey: 2022, the average American drives 30.1 miles each day. It's not just the Europe, the US too. Considering that roughly 60% of all households in the US have 2 or more cars, having a smaller one is totally a working option (with the slight disadvantage that you have to share the road with enormous trucks).
Even in a country like Australia that potentially has the worst adoption of EV's, 25k is becoming a very close reality. $25K USD is about $38K AUD and there's the BYD Dolphin, MG4/ZS EV, GWM Ora that all come in between around the $35k mark and are basically this but better. Honestly china is killing it with EV's lately
1.That seems like a perfectly reasonable 2nd car for a family. Almost no one needs 2 Ioniqs or Blazer EVs. 2. In most urban areas, 90%+ of daily commute is under 100 miles. If you have reliable home charging or a charging network, a 100 mile range second car *is fine*. Americans (and US automakers) are obsessed with a 300 mph range car because that's what they're used to for a gas car, not because it's actually useful or applicable. 3. China makes EVs they can sell for $15k. The US automakers are trying to get them banned, because they cannot compete. Yes, it's possible. Just not from US automakers.
@@afonsoabreu5144 my city usually has designated car parking spaces ranging from 1 per floor to 1 per flat depending on when it was built (soviet planning 1980 style vs modern 2018). I could realistically just drop an extension cable from my 4th floor and somewhat conceal it for not to damage the guidelines on aesthetics, but there are 90 flats per 9 storey building and it's wrong to expect everyone to be doing this Parking spaces from soviet era kinda makes me wish that I was living in the usa concrete parking hell, because there's around 6 cars per 10 people. Being a son in a family of 3, we already had a problem having 2 cars in family. Then I moved out to the outskirts of the city where pensioners live for cheaper housing and more car parking. I literally can't own a car, because there's nowhere to park in 0.5 mile/0.8 km radius and it's easier to just walk the same distances to a bus stop or extra 200 meters to another one. Agree with your points, coming from a 500 Abarth owner of 11yrs. Also as many people I see here in Texas buying golf carts and side by sides to go to the Dollar store or the liquor store. However they wouldn't consider a small EV such as the 500 next to their larger vehicles, it's a shame for all the hate on small, low range vehicles(in the US)
The space and design are mostly because of the traditional Fiat 500 which has been made for decades. This is just an electric version of an existing car, and I guess not designing from scratch will change how people view it. Also, the no mirror on drivers side is a safety thing I think, maybe not so common in America!
@@fatalfallacy it is just an electric version of the same design language. It probably had to be developed again and used different platform because of batteries, but it is basically the same car design.
That’s actually an excellent point. I think the problem is that, strictly speaking, inflation tracks the general buying power of the American dollar and not the buying power of the average consumer. Perhaps the currency itself is inflated but the average money folks have to spend on a vehicle has not kept up with inflation. (Don’t know whether that’s true or not though)
That’s exactly the point I was gonna make 25,000 was the price point 10 years ago. Standard inflation makes that 33000. so we got there but I don’t think this is the car that’s gonna make them sell yet
I have a 2013 Fiat 500e. The program then yielded $7500 fed, and $2500 state money for a $24k car. We have 55k miles on it, and it has never had a problem. The tax rebate made the $10k difference.
Stellantis builds the Fiat 500, which is the shape it is for iconic/historic reasons - the tiny back seat has more to do with the car's heritage than the price point. Stellantis is also building the Citroen eC3 in Europe, just one of many EVs they build there, which has more range and is larger with a much more useable rear seat - and that costs
I own the Fiat 500e convertible in Germany and absolutely love it! My wife has her Model 3 and I came from a Model Y. It's perfect for the city. Fits in every parking space and basically turns on a dime! I also have the model with the bigger 42kwh battery and get a realistic range of 185 miles (300km).
In Mexico we just got the BYD Dolphin Mini, basically the smallest electric car BYD builds and it’s selling like hot cakes just for that reason: it’s a usable $25k electric car. It’s a 4 door hatchback, sits 4 people comfortably, it’s got a nice design, feels well built with good materials, has all the tech bells & whistles you may want, it’s got a proven drivetrain since BYD is great with its electric vehicles, and over all of that it starts at just over $21k USD with a 186 mile range. For $23k you get 236 miles of range. It’s simply the best electric car for the price range here and it surpasses the Fiat in every spec. Don’t get me wrong, I love that electric Fiat but I do believe it’s overpriced and not as nicely specced as the European version. I don’t know how BYD did such a great job with its car, but it would be amazing if you ever got a chance to test one.

Yes, absolutely. The Chinese are already making ones, but the US government is charging a ridiculous import taxes that makes the price significantly higher than it is in China.
BYD can sell Seagull with tariff and dealer mark up and still be under 25k in US, BYD wont invest in dealerships or US road certification for some reason.
the issue with opening the floodgates to cheap chinese EVs is it really lowers the quality floor and would probably start a race to the bottom in terms of quality (and safety). Plus all the geo political nonsense of course and not to mention the potential american jobs that could be lost.

BYD SEAL basic is $20k+ in China and twice that in Europe. Only one China export to SE Asia and Latin America scrapes in at $15 base - Geely Emgrand GSe - a converted ICE compact.

In Europe we do have the Dacia Spring that starts at 16900€ (around $18k) with 140 miles of range. The thing is, it is very cheap inside, and very basic features (base version doesnt even have a radio). But I do believe that a good $25k eletric car is more than possible with time.
It's true, but the model that starts at that price also has a speed limit of 120 km/h. If I'm not mistaken, the Spring, in general, is a Chinese kit car that Dacia customizes. If surcharges on Chinese cars are implemented, its price will rise as well.

I don't care about the cheap feel of interior if I know I'm buying a cheap EV. I just want to have an EV that I can actually afford that has more than 150 miles of range at least and charge fast to counter the lower range. I don't care about wireless charging phone or sweet infotainment graphics or none of that. I just want a car with an electric motor and at least 150 miles of range, so I got an used Nissan Leaf 2023 for $17k with 15k miles on it and I love it. I call it the boring electric car which is great.

@@kevilleb Battery swap has been my thinking for a decade. Have standardized batteries that can be auto swapped in 5 minutes then range becomes a non issue.
It's 1200000 INR i.e. 14500 USD, 125 miles of real world range. Maybe you put 10000 USD of more battery and you can get more than 200 miles of range and a 4 door hatchback with decent safety for less than 25000 USD.

You really missed the point of this car. Yes, it is expensive for what it offers ON PAPER, BUT as an owner of it for about 6 months in a Athens, Greece which has a huge traffic/congestion daily problem, I can assure you it is the absolute perfect dense city car. Also if you lease it rather than buy it, the cost that is it's only downside is not such an issue any more. Indicatively, I lease it from Avis for 3 years for €9/day and with all the hassle-free benefits that leasing offers (free service, pick up and delivery, insurance, etc). This car has that something special that cannot be translated on paper. It has character and when you drive, it you feel it daily. It puts a smile on your face. As a reviewer you should have picked up on that.
The rear seats are criminally small though. If they still make it, the BMW i3, VW/Seat/Skoda eUp are far better city EV than the 500e if you ever need to sit more than 2 people.
@@humphreychiu1767 90% of the people sit alone in their car and only take short trips. A small city car is objectively less ridiculous than a pickup truck or SUV on many levels. Why buy a car that can seat 7 people and you sit alone 90% of the time? I need the space for my gear, so I have a bigger boot. But not more than I need.
and when I sat in it, I actually liked the interior. If i started touching everywhere maybe I would feel the "cheapness", but just sitting in it, I really liked it and it didnt feel cheap at all
I think it's actually you who missed the point of this review. City cars are great but they're supposed to be really cheap, and in the US the electric 500 is not cheap - the main point here is that if even the Fiat can't get below 30k how on earth is someone going to get a sub 25k EV on the road there when there's not much left to cut without starting to compromise actual core parts of the car?
In India we have 'The Tata Tigor EV' for around 10k dollars, "Tata Tiago EV" for 10k dollars, "Mahindra Xuv 400 EV" for 15k dollars, Tata Nexon EV for 15k dollars again, and the cheapest EV we have is "mg comet ev" for 7k dollar.

If you have urban planning like in the US, you are screwed; no public transport, huge distances, car dependent cities. In Europe you often do not need a car to live well.
As an American, many metro areas are straight up unsustainable. The western US is the worst offender. The houses don’t pay enough tax to pay for their infrastructure needed. Everything is spread way too far apart. Like you unironically have to get onto an interstate and drive 20-30 miles at 80mph+ if you’re a Denver area commuter. The amount of pavement, wire, pipe, sewer, lawn, and other infrastructure it takes to sustain this is not feasible long term and very expensive. While US civil engineering is slowly leaving the 60s, making reasonable cities is still illegal in many states
Probably our best hope for a 25k car tbh but still it's 300km /180miles range for base model, for the 400km range version it will be way more expensive I bet.
@@TheFPSPower the 400km WLTP range version was revealed with a base price of 33k just a few days ago. I think with all options checked you can probably reach into the 36k price bracket. The Volkswagen ID.2 will start at 25k, but the big battery version will probably cost the same as the Renault 5 with the bigger battery. The Cupra Raval will start at 30k but will also offer better specs for the base version. The Renault R5 is awesome but a bit too expensive for what it offers. It is a lifestyle EV like the Mini Cooper EV

The functionality of the dash is better than cars 3x the price. Cutting costs with the touch screens and having more buttons is the way more vehicles should go.
Most brands actually used to put more stuff in the touchscreen because they want to cut costs for the physical buttons, not the other way around. If you want to make a 500e 2k dollars cheaper, cut the buttons and the charging pad.
@@henrikbundt9225 This excuse never made sense to me. Switches cost pennies, they need no development and their existing designers can throw one together in hours, probably from existing components. Doing it in software means you have to hire programmers and software designers and QC/testers to build an entire OS for the car and all the systems it has to work with, essentially becoming software companies, jobs they need whole new departments, let alone new staff for. There is no way on earth it is cheaper to leave out a dial or two and a handful of buttons for climate control versus building a software interface and firmware for automation that does this, only worse.
FINALLY! A couple of things that you missed (as an owner of one for two years): 1. It does support Wireless CarPlay and WIRED Android Auto, i’m using CarPlay daily and works perfectly 2. It has one pedal driving, the knob ti the left of the volume wheel is there to change driving mods. 3. It has a cabriolet version which made it the only electric cabriolet for a while Other than that this car is made for the city or short-ish commutes but I’ve managed to drive very ling trips with stops on the way and been living with jt for 2+ years and been loving it (as a ayoung person that needs to find parking in the city and not buy a very expensive car and drive a lot so not pay a lot for gas) Anyhow thanks for this review! FYI I just ordered a full size Citroen Ë-C3 for 16 thousand dollars after tax credits in Italy! Far less than 25K. Thank you for not destroying the made in Italy 2020 Fiat 500.
I actually own one here in Finland, so this comment is from a perspective of a European version of the 500e: Price is it's downfall surely. I bought mine as used, a year old 12 000km (7500mi) on the odo and it cost 25 900€ a year ago, which is just fine for what it is. But as a new one this is just too expensive. Like 36k€ with all the options. - I have wireless Carplay and I use it daily - There is one pedal driving if you change the drive mode from Normal to Range, with the drive mode selector on the middle console in the center between the seats. - Theres actually a 25k€ version of this car in Europe, with a 24kWh battery. $25k - Doesn't need full digital displays. Just needs a radio and AC at most. Doesn't need what looked like a digital door unlock. Doesn't need lane keeping assist and things that use some sort of radar system. Could also try just reducing the price given they make more profit than needed. Other companies around the world are able to produce an EV for less than $25k.

Love my OG 500e. Perfect city car. 10 year old battery and still gets decent range. I see many in the PNW. They all seem to have migrated north from California. Can be had for under $10k.
The fact that there is no electric car for 25,000 dollars in America does not mean that there are none in the rest of the planet, which is, after all, much bigger than tiny America. The Dacia Spring costs around $23,000 and has similar specs to the Fiat 500i.
I’ve owned this car for over a year and need to correct a few points. It does have one-pedal driving, available in Range mode. There are three driving modes: Normal (no one-pedal driving), Range (one-pedal driving), and Sherpa (limits air conditioning and top speed to maximize range). Both Android Auto and CarPlay are definitely available. Regarding interior quality, I agree. In the La Prima models, the faux leather is beautiful, and the dashboard features some nicer materials here and there.
In India, tata recently launched the Tata curvv at 25,000$ which has a range of 250 miles , not bad considering it is a premium car with many features and great design
Pretty big difference in US market compared to Europe market. Short journeys are a lot more common in UK, average annual mileage in UK for a car is around 8k miles I believe, USA is about double that. So range is less important meaning cheaper cars are a genuine option.
60% of trips in the US are under 6 miles, 95% are under 31. The avg American drives around 37 miles a day. Car occupancy rates average 1.5. And Marques wants to point out the lack of a vanity mirror. Car dependency in the US seems to have the paradoxical effect that people load their means of transport with ideas around status and value. Bigger and more expensive is better and safer. The lifestyle logic of the cybertruck, even though increasingly in Europe for example the best car is actually no need for a car. So, snap-on plastic panels, small batteries and a basic interior for that school run and groceries trip might be even less popular than bike lanes and denser housing.
My wife's 2024 Kona SEL EV was $26,000 out the door with all the deals here in Colorado. I paid $28,000 for my Kona Limited EV. The 261 mile range is plenty and the 10 year/100k warranty is better than most also.
BYD can deliver it, but Elon did a lot of lobby and now chinese EVs have a 100% of tax in US. Here in Europe 500e starts in 29k€ (with a launch campaing of 26k). The BYD Dolphin also starts at 29k (with 400km +/- range) and the Dolphin Mini is expect to arrive costing something beetween 18-20k€ (with 300km range)

If you consider inflation, a $32,000 Model Y today is equivalent to a $26,000 price in 2019. You could also say the reason the cybertruck is overpriced is to fund the losses of the $25,000 car which they conceivably may break even with. I wish the US would have taken the route of battery pack replacement facilities in lieu of gas/charging stations. The car could come with a first pack free and then you are charged per “fill up” (replacement). The battery replacement centers could be a warehouse covered in solar and load balance or slow charge each pack. The whole building could even double as a town battery backup in some emergency cases.

The 25K EV is already here, just not in the US. China has got a boatload of models that offer good range, decent features for under 30K. In Europe, Renault, Stellantis and Volkswagen are all targeting that 25K price point with their new EV's (5 E-tech, ID.2, e-C3, etc).

Tesla have already talked about how they will try to achieve this: - By revolutionizing the manufacturing process, replacing the traditional assembly line with an "unboxed process" where large parts of the car (front, rear, underbody+battery pack etc) are assembled by themselves and then put together in the end. Basically more similar to how smaller items are manufactured. Car assembly lines have been largely the same for 100 years and have peaked.
1: remove infotainment screen , you will use a phone holder , an app and a bluetooth connection/Cable. 2: no LED's, all classic headlights 3: no alloy wheels, steel and plastic wheel covers 4: remove as many painted parts as possible: bare plastic on side mirrors, bumpers ecc. 5: reduce electronic parts: doors will open mechanically with a handle instead of a door popper, prioritize good visibility instead of rear view cameras and parking sensors, it's a small car anyway and with no paint on bumpers there's nothing to scratch.
I mean, the same FIAT 500e costs less than $25K in Europe. However, the Tesla you mentioned is $10K more expensive in Europe. Export costs add a lot to the price. If Tesla wants to make a car similar to the FIAT 500e, with cheap plastic materials and a small compact design for the US market, it could definitely cost around $25K
That car exists and it's called BYD dolphin mini. An electric vehicle launched by BYD in Brazil that costs around R$115k which is something like USD 23k. Furthermore, considering the amount of taxes we have here it would be even cheaper in US
Maybe it's made for an American audience, so I am probably speaking out of turn, but I drive a Tata Punch EV, costed me 12L INR (15-16K USD), and is top notch in all respects, including 300-350 km range. Including the features of any modern vehicle, and alot more !
Marques, you're reflecting the American market's obsession with range. Most people don't go on long road trips. And people who do, tend to have more than one car, or can rent a car. You don't need to own a road trip car. Or a camping trailer. Or a sail boat. Or a jet ski. Or any of those other toys that clutter the driveways and yards of American suburbs. Those things can be rented for the 2-3 days a year when you might actually need them. The obsession with 300-400 miles of range is making cars needlessly heavy and expensive. We're hauling around these huge, heavy, expensive batteries on our 10-20 mile commutes. That's like walking around with 1-gallon jugs of water just in case we get stranded in the dessert overnight. Oh, wait...

You should look at some of the EVs Indian manufacturers have been putting out, specifically TATA. We have TATA Nexon and TATA Punch all selling like hot cakes under 20 to 25k USD here in India. it's pretty special.

Came here to write this. My girlfriend is driving this car (and loves it). It is a wonderful little city car. Of course it’s not a long range model, but do you really need that? We’re living in Germany, where you don’t have the very long drives on a daily basis and she is getting around for a week without charging. Of course it has some more plastic, but it’s fine, you get the same in the small ICE cars.

European here. My mum has this car. The lease is costing her 100€ / month and the electricity costs her about 100€ / year. She uses it for daily commute and normal life stuff around town. She only needs to charge it overnight once a week.

You get as options:
-The exterior color Red by (RED) 500€
-The Comfort-Package for 1500€ including: heated exterior mirrors, arm rest up front, heated wiper elements on the front windscreen, 50/50 folding rear seats, heated front seats, a hight ajustable driver seat, 360° "Drone View" reverse camera, and a blind spot assist
-And a bigger Mode 2 Charging cable for 250€
So you end up currently at around 27.000€ (because of a special discount Fiat offers you right know, because EV sales dropped in all over Europe) you still have 15 inch steel wheels with hubcaps and halogen headlights, both are in a package that would cost another 1500€ but again it's a mini-compact car so you might not need it.
You lease the car for 48 month/ 4 years.
The back wants to make 1500€ profit, so the car costs 29.500€. Now here's were it gets interesting, and how leases in general work.
You order the car and it comes 5 month later. Your car gets registered on your name and you sign a few papers and pay the destination fee. Then the vehicle documents are gonna get send to the bank, because they pay the 27.000€ for the car. Now let's say the bank calcutes that the car is worth 19.000€ after the 4 years that you used the car, so it's 27.000-19.000=8000 and the 8000€ get devided by 48 because of the lease month you'd end up at 222 a month. That still to much, so the banks just use a final rate. of 3000€ an you'd already end up a 105€ a month. They could also just calcute the car higher or when the lease is over they calcute potential scrates and damages higher than expected.
So to lease a car it's usally just interesting as a company to avoid the 19% product taxes.

Remember this is a European car, made for European cities. The cars here are in general smaller than in the US. Parking spaces are narrow and small. And trust me (I'm from the Netherlands). Driving a Tesla Model 3 through Amsterdam is already challenging, let alone in small cities in Italy. So, it's also made this small on purpose. I'm absolutely sure batteries will become cheaper and smaller. The amounts of rare metals in batteries is declining, so they become cheaper as this is the main cost driver.

That and also development cost is probably a huge thing. Yes they have all been out for awhile but it still feels like someone is making it the first time every new model that launches. I don't know exactly what is going on with the BYD everyone is mentioning but if i had to guess besides labor costs being insanely low they just stuck to basics and exactly the things that work, everyone keeps trying to reinvent what a electric car should be before we have even settled on a basic standard (i mean in regards to interface etc, all the little things.) I believe by comparison the BYD is a electric tractor that is comfortable enough, but thats fine, at least they seemed to crack some standard to driving down costs.

The only way to get the ban on one model of vehicle lifted is by spending an exorbitant amount of money, effort, and time to get a single model approved to be imported, including crash testing, emmisions testing, and other safety/environmental testing of the like, and its coming out of the person's wallet that's trying to import it. At least 6 figures for a "cheap" imported car less than 25 years old.. It's dumb

There are a few things I noticed when watching this.
1) It does have Android Auto and Apple Carplay.
2) It does have 1-pedal driving. Just put it in Range mode.
3) The startup and shutdown jingles are much less creepy in america. In the UK, it's a different one and it's really eerie lol
4) My version of this car has 90 miles of range. And it's more than enough for me.
5) The back seats are tiny, yeah. But I wanna quickly give a shoutout to my Mum, who sat in the back of this car when I did my driving test and she somehow managed.
6) My biggest gripe is that the seats don't go up or down.

Citroen eC3 is coming out right now in EU for about $25,000 and it's a decent small 5-door SUV/Cross Over with 200miles of range. Comfortable, save and fits 4 to 5 people. So question answered.
The US Car market is so limited, that's the problem.
Imagine this.
You live in Italy, you have a lot of low emissions zones, work in the city centre, small parking spaces, you need a zippy car that is electric and costs less than a Tesla. Now the cheaper options start to make some sense, especially if you don’t do more than 5-20km a day, as it often happens around the EU.
It is clearly an economy car, but as far as these cars go, this seems like a solid choice overall. You get some extra features here and there, a decent design, some thought went into all the parts.
I’d say it cannot make sense in the USA, that’s for sure.
According to American Driving Survey: 2022, the average American drives 30.1 miles each day. It's not just the Europe, the US too. Considering that roughly 60% of all households in the US have 2 or more cars, having a smaller one is totally a working option (with the slight disadvantage that you have to share the road with enormous trucks).

$25K USD is about $38K AUD and there's the BYD Dolphin, MG4/ZS EV, GWM Ora that all come in between around the $35k mark and are basically this but better.

1.That seems like a perfectly reasonable 2nd car for a family. Almost no one needs 2 Ioniqs or Blazer EVs.
2. In most urban areas, 90%+ of daily commute is under 100 miles. If you have reliable home charging or a charging network, a 100 mile range second car *is fine*. Americans (and US automakers) are obsessed with a 300 mph range car because that's what they're used to for a gas car, not because it's actually useful or applicable.
3. China makes EVs they can sell for $15k. The US automakers are trying to get them banned, because they cannot compete.

@@afonsoabreu5144 my city usually has designated car parking spaces ranging from 1 per floor to 1 per flat depending on when it was built (soviet planning 1980 style vs modern 2018). I could realistically just drop an extension cable from my 4th floor and somewhat conceal it for not to damage the guidelines on aesthetics, but there are 90 flats per 9 storey building and it's wrong to expect everyone to be doing this
Parking spaces from soviet era kinda makes me wish that I was living in the usa concrete parking hell, because there's around 6 cars per 10 people. Being a son in a family of 3, we already had a problem having 2 cars in family. Then I moved out to the outskirts of the city where pensioners live for cheaper housing and more car parking. I literally can't own a car, because there's nowhere to park in 0.5 mile/0.8 km radius and it's easier to just walk the same distances to a bus stop or extra 200 meters to another one.

Agree with your points, coming from a 500 Abarth owner of 11yrs. Also as many people I see here in Texas buying golf carts and side by sides to go to the Dollar store or the liquor store. However they wouldn't consider a small EV such as the 500 next to their larger vehicles, it's a shame for all the hate on small, low range vehicles(in the US)

The space and design are mostly because of the traditional Fiat 500 which has been made for decades. This is just an electric version of an existing car, and I guess not designing from scratch will change how people view it. Also, the no mirror on drivers side is a safety thing I think, maybe not so common in America!
I love in Europe my car has the driver side only mirror. The 500e is developed on a electric platform so no it’s not the 2010s 500

That’s actually an excellent point. I think the problem is that, strictly speaking, inflation tracks the general buying power of the American dollar and not the buying power of the average consumer. Perhaps the currency itself is inflated but the average money folks have to spend on a vehicle has not kept up with inflation. (Don’t know whether that’s true or not though)

I have a 2013 Fiat 500e. The program then yielded $7500 fed, and $2500 state money for a $24k car. We have 55k miles on it, and it has never had a problem. The tax rebate made the $10k difference.

Stellantis builds the Fiat 500, which is the shape it is for iconic/historic reasons - the tiny back seat has more to do with the car's heritage than the price point. Stellantis is also building the Citroen eC3 in Europe, just one of many EVs they build there, which has more range and is larger with a much more useable rear seat - and that costs
I own the Fiat 500e convertible in Germany and absolutely love it! My wife has her Model 3 and I came from a Model Y. It's perfect for the city. Fits in every parking space and basically turns on a dime! I also have the model with the bigger 42kwh battery and get a realistic range of 185 miles (300km).
In Mexico we just got the BYD Dolphin Mini, basically the smallest electric car BYD builds and it’s selling like hot cakes just for that reason: it’s a usable $25k electric car. It’s a 4 door hatchback, sits 4 people comfortably, it’s got a nice design, feels well built with good materials, has all the tech bells & whistles you may want, it’s got a proven drivetrain since BYD is great with its electric vehicles, and over all of that it starts at just over $21k USD with a 186 mile range. For $23k you get 236 miles of range. It’s simply the best electric car for the price range here and it surpasses the Fiat in every spec. Don’t get me wrong, I love that electric Fiat but I do believe it’s overpriced and not as nicely specced as the European version. I don’t know how BYD did such a great job with its car, but it would be amazing if you ever got a chance to test one.
Only thing proven with BYD is how their batteries combust and catch fire on its own, even when parked.

BYD can sell Seagull with tariff and dealer mark up and still be under 25k in US, BYD wont invest in dealerships or US road certification for some reason.
the issue with opening the floodgates to cheap chinese EVs is it really lowers the quality floor and would probably start a race to the bottom in terms of quality (and safety). Plus all the geo political nonsense of course and not to mention the potential american jobs that could be lost.

BYD SEAL basic is $20k+ in China and twice that in Europe. Only one China export to SE Asia and Latin America scrapes in at $15 base - Geely Emgrand GSe - a converted ICE compact.

In Europe we do have the Dacia Spring that starts at 16900€ (around $18k) with 140 miles of range. The thing is, it is very cheap inside, and very basic features (base version doesnt even have a radio). But I do believe that a good $25k eletric car is more than possible with time.

It's true, but the model that starts at that price also has a speed limit of 120 km/h. If I'm not mistaken, the Spring, in general, is a Chinese kit car that Dacia customizes. If surcharges on Chinese cars are implemented, its price will rise as well.

I don't care about the cheap feel of interior if I know I'm buying a cheap EV. I just want to have an EV that I can actually afford that has more than 150 miles of range at least and charge fast to counter the lower range. I don't care about wireless charging phone or sweet infotainment graphics or none of that. I just want a car with an electric motor and at least 150 miles of range, so I got an used Nissan Leaf 2023 for $17k with 15k miles on it and I love it. I call it the boring electric car which is great.

I would recommend an old Tesla model S, I've seen some go for like 20k in really good shape. But of course might not be what you're looking for.
With an entry-level e-C3 you don't even have a central screen but you plug in your smartphone with a dedicated app, reduces cost

You really missed the point of this car. Yes, it is expensive for what it offers ON PAPER, BUT as an owner of it for about 6 months in a Athens, Greece which has a huge traffic/congestion daily problem, I can assure you it is the absolute perfect dense city car. Also if you lease it rather than buy it, the cost that is it's only downside is not such an issue any more. Indicatively, I lease it from Avis for 3 years for €9/day and with all the hassle-free benefits that leasing offers (free service, pick up and delivery, insurance, etc). This car has that something special that cannot be translated on paper. It has character and when you drive, it you feel it daily. It puts a smile on your face. As a reviewer you should have picked up on that.
The rear seats are criminally small though. If they still make it, the BMW i3, VW/Seat/Skoda eUp are far better city EV than the 500e if you ever need to sit more than 2 people.

City cars are great but they're supposed to be really cheap, and in the US the electric 500 is not cheap - the main point here is that if even the Fiat can't get below 30k how on earth is someone going to get a sub 25k EV on the road there when there's not much left to cut without starting to compromise actual core parts of the car?

The range makes sense for what this car is made for. It's a city car made for short trips to work, taking the sprogs to school and so forth.
In India we have 'The Tata Tigor EV' for around 10k dollars, "Tata Tiago EV" for 10k dollars, "Mahindra Xuv 400 EV" for 15k dollars, Tata Nexon EV for 15k dollars again, and the cheapest EV we have is "mg comet ev" for 7k dollar.
The range is way to less for us market as the distances between places are huge in us .

If you have urban planning like in the US, you are screwed; no public transport, huge distances, car dependent cities. In Europe you often do not need a car to live well.
As an American, many metro areas are straight up unsustainable. The western US is the worst offender. The houses don’t pay enough tax to pay for their infrastructure needed. Everything is spread way too far apart.
Like you unironically have to get onto an interstate and drive 20-30 miles at 80mph+ if you’re a Denver area commuter. The amount of pavement, wire, pipe, sewer, lawn, and other infrastructure it takes to sustain this is not feasible long term and very expensive.
While US civil engineering is slowly leaving the 60s, making reasonable cities is still illegal in many states

@@TheFPSPower the 400km WLTP range version was revealed with a base price of 33k just a few days ago. I think with all options checked you can probably reach into the 36k price bracket. The Volkswagen ID.2 will start at 25k, but the big battery version will probably cost the same as the Renault 5 with the bigger battery. The Cupra Raval will start at 30k but will also offer better specs for the base version. The Renault R5 is awesome but a bit too expensive for what it offers. It is a lifestyle EV like the Mini Cooper EV

The functionality of the dash is better than cars 3x the price. Cutting costs with the touch screens and having more buttons is the way more vehicles should go.
Most brands actually used to put more stuff in the touchscreen because they want to cut costs for the physical buttons, not the other way around.
If you want to make a 500e 2k dollars cheaper, cut the buttons and the charging pad.
@@henrikbundt9225 This excuse never made sense to me. Switches cost pennies, they need no development and their existing designers can throw one together in hours, probably from existing components. Doing it in software means you have to hire programmers and software designers and QC/testers to build an entire OS for the car and all the systems it has to work with, essentially becoming software companies, jobs they need whole new departments, let alone new staff for. There is no way on earth it is cheaper to leave out a dial or two and a handful of buttons for climate control versus building a software interface and firmware for automation that does this, only worse.
FINALLY! A couple of things that you missed (as an owner of one for two years):
1. It does support Wireless CarPlay and WIRED Android Auto, i’m using CarPlay daily and works perfectly
2. It has one pedal driving, the knob ti the left of the volume wheel is there to change driving mods.
3. It has a cabriolet version which made it the only electric cabriolet for a while
Other than that this car is made for the city or short-ish commutes but I’ve managed to drive very ling trips with stops on the way and been living with jt for 2+ years and been loving it (as a ayoung person that needs to find parking in the city and not buy a very expensive car and drive a lot so not pay a lot for gas)

China makes plenty of decent affordable EVs (sub 20k) with good range. They don't come to the USA because of tariffs, tensions, etc..
FYI I just ordered a full size Citroen Ë-C3 for 16 thousand dollars after tax credits in Italy! Far less than 25K. Thank you for not destroying the made in Italy 2020 Fiat 500.

Price is it's downfall surely. I bought mine as used, a year old 12 000km (7500mi) on the odo and it cost 25 900€ a year ago, which is just fine for what it is. But as a new one this is just too expensive. Like 36k€ with all the options.
- I have wireless Carplay and I use it daily
- There is one pedal driving if you change the drive mode from Normal to Range, with the drive mode selector on the middle console in the center between the seats.
- Theres actually a 25k€ version of this car in Europe, with a 24kWh battery. But thats truly gotta be a city car.
Also theres a Dacia Spring in Europe thats a lot cheaper and maybe the closest usable car for that 25k price is the MG4? It's a 27-28k€ car and has a 51kWh battery.
MG4 is definitely the sweet spot

$25k - Doesn't need full digital displays. Just needs a radio and AC at most. Doesn't need what looked like a digital door unlock. Doesn't need lane keeping assist and things that use some sort of radar system. Could also try just reducing the price given they make more profit than needed. Other companies around the world are able to produce an EV for less than $25k.

The fact that there is no electric car for 25,000 dollars in America does not mean that there are none in the rest of the planet, which is, after all, much bigger than tiny America. The Dacia Spring costs around $23,000 and has similar specs to the Fiat 500i.
I’ve owned this car for over a year and need to correct a few points. It does have one-pedal driving, available in Range mode. There are three driving modes: Normal (no one-pedal driving), Range (one-pedal driving), and Sherpa (limits air conditioning and top speed to maximize range). Both Android Auto and CarPlay are definitely available. Regarding interior quality, I agree. In the La Prima models, the faux leather is beautiful, and the dashboard features some nicer materials here and there.
In India, tata recently launched the Tata curvv at 25,000$ which has a range of 250 miles , not bad considering it is a premium car with many features and great design

Pretty big difference in US market compared to Europe market. Short journeys are a lot more common in UK, average annual mileage in UK for a car is around 8k miles I believe, USA is about double that. So range is less important meaning cheaper cars are a genuine option.
60% of trips in the US are under 6 miles, 95% are under 31. The avg American drives around 37 miles a day. Car occupancy rates average 1.5. And Marques wants to point out the lack of a vanity mirror.
Car dependency in the US seems to have the paradoxical effect that people load their means of transport with ideas around status and value. Bigger and more expensive is better and safer. The lifestyle logic of the cybertruck, even though increasingly in Europe for example the best car is actually no need for a car.
So, snap-on plastic panels, small batteries and a basic interior for that school run and groceries trip might be even less popular than bike lanes and denser housing.
My wife's 2024 Kona SEL EV was $26,000 out the door with all the deals here in Colorado. I paid $28,000 for my Kona Limited EV. The 261 mile range is plenty and the 10 year/100k warranty is better than most also.
My mom has this electric fiat 500. It's perfect for a city like Berlin. It's not for long road trips. Just daily city commutes & grocery shopping

The BYD Dolphin also starts at 29k (with 400km +/- range) and the Dolphin Mini is expect to arrive costing something beetween 18-20k€ (with 300km range)

If you consider inflation, a $32,000 Model Y today is equivalent to a $26,000 price in 2019. You could also say the reason the cybertruck is overpriced is to fund the losses of the $25,000 car which they conceivably may break even with.
I wish the US would have taken the route of battery pack replacement facilities in lieu of gas/charging stations. The car could come with a first pack free and then you are charged per “fill up” (replacement). The battery replacement centers could be a warehouse covered in solar and load balance or slow charge each pack. The whole building could even double as a town battery backup in some emergency cases.
BINGO !! There's a vid explaining why EM didn't go this route but leaves out the battery pack is one of the biggest money maker parts of the EV IE why NIO's idea of battery swapping isn't way more popular.

This car can be had in Europe for about 20K euros (sometimes even less) with low mileage at 1-2 years old. IMO that's a good deal.
The chinese, vietnamese and Indians are all make 10k RVs with 300 mile range.
GDP per capita in Europe is 10 to 50 times that of India and 4 times that of China
on average...

The 25K EV is already here, just not in the US. China has got a boatload of models that offer good range, decent features for under 30K. In Europe, Renault, Stellantis and Volkswagen are all targeting that 25K price point with their new EV's (5 E-tech, ID.2, e-C3, etc).
the e-c3 got a 0 star adult passenger rating from NCAP. that would never be allowed to drive on U.S. roads

Tesla have already talked about how they will try to achieve this:
- By revolutionizing the manufacturing process, replacing the traditional assembly line with an "unboxed process" where large parts of the car (front, rear, underbody+battery pack etc) are assembled by themselves and then put together in the end.
Basically more similar to how smaller items are manufactured. Car assembly lines have been largely the same for 100 years and have peaked.
1: remove infotainment screen , you will use a phone holder , an app and a bluetooth connection/Cable.
2: no LED's, all classic headlights
3: no alloy wheels, steel and plastic wheel covers
4: remove as many painted parts as possible: bare plastic on side mirrors, bumpers ecc.
5: reduce electronic parts: doors will open mechanically with a handle instead of a door popper, prioritize good visibility instead of rear view cameras and parking sensors, it's a small car anyway and with no paint on bumpers there's nothing to scratch.
In India we have TATA Tiago, base model starts at ₹800,000 (9614 dollars). It's range is about 250-300 km on single charge.
I mean, the same FIAT 500e costs less than $25K in Europe. However, the Tesla you mentioned is $10K more expensive in Europe. Export costs add a lot to the price. If Tesla wants to make a car similar to the FIAT 500e, with cheap plastic materials and a small compact design for the US market, it could definitely cost around $25K
That car exists and it's called BYD dolphin mini. An electric vehicle launched by BYD in Brazil that costs around R$115k which is something like USD 23k. Furthermore, considering the amount of taxes we have here it would be even cheaper in US

Maybe it's made for an American audience, so I am probably speaking out of turn, but I drive a Tata Punch EV, costed me 12L INR (15-16K USD), and is top notch in all respects, including 300-350 km range.
Including the features of any modern vehicle, and alot more !

Marques, you're reflecting the American market's obsession with range. Most people don't go on long road trips. And people who do, tend to have more than one car, or can rent a car. You don't need to own a road trip car. Or a camping trailer. Or a sail boat. Or a jet ski. Or any of those other toys that clutter the driveways and yards of American suburbs. Those things can be rented for the 2-3 days a year when you might actually need them.
The obsession with 300-400 miles of range is making cars needlessly heavy and expensive. We're hauling around these huge, heavy, expensive batteries on our 10-20 mile commutes. That's like walking around with 1-gallon jugs of water just in case we get stranded in the dessert overnight.

You should look at some of the EVs Indian manufacturers have been putting out, specifically TATA. We have TATA Nexon and TATA Punch all selling like hot cakes under 20 to 25k USD here in India. it's pretty special.
