I think Harry Potter must be a cosy fantasy - the parts I love the most are the characters down time where they go to class and chat in the common room!

Definitely! I'm in the middle of the series atm and although it does get a bit more intense, the overall vibe I get from the books is just a great sense of coziness.

I read the Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches last summer on vacation while pregnant. So most of my vacation was laying around on the couch vibing with this wonderful cozy fantasy, with sunlight streaming in. An instant favorite, and I love that I have such nice memories to associate with it.

I read The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches after finishing The House in the Cerulean Sea because I was looking for more cozy vibes and it did not disappoint! I am very excited for Klune and Mandanna's new releases this year 🙂

Grace of Wild Things by Heather Fawcett is an adorably cozy reimagining of Anne of Green Gables but with a witch and dash of ghibli's Kiki. There is a familiar and found family/friends. Sarah Addison Allen writes magical realism that can feel so cozy. The Sugar Queen, Garden Spells, and Other Birds are so lovely. I also liked The Girl Who Chased the Moon but remember it felt a bit heavier even if there was a gentle giant.

Two books I've never heard people talk about but are very cute and cozy are Welcome to Fae Cafe and The House Witch. They are both a bit silly, don't take them too seriously, but they are such a good time. The House Witch has some very 90s high school juvenile humor but it was so nostalgic for me and I really loved the characters and the dynamics and especially the character growth.

Legends & Lattes was my first exposure to Cozy Fantasy and now, I crave MORE of it!. Also, I own several of these titles already and have read a few of them either earlier THIS year or I did so last year.
To be specific; I own, L&L, Irregular Witches, Wild Faeries, Bookshops & Bonedust (the prequel to L&L,) Bakers & Magic, Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking, House on the Cerulean Sea, The Bookshop & The Barbarian and as we speak, I'm reading Under the Whispering Door

Surprised to have read a few of the books mentioned. Guess I was more of a cozy reader than I thought :D The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea was an amazing read! The way the author just paints the scene, it does feel like a Ghibli movie, the streets beneath the sea had me in awe, and the characters too - just, can't even describe how I felt reading this one.
Personally have Margaret Rogerson, Half a Soul, Encyclopedia of Faeries and Six Crimson Cranes in my tbr rn. And may I add some cozy sci-fi to the conversation: Becky Chambers' books are so cozy and low-stakes and it's like hanging out in space, very slice-of-life!😊

I really liked Kiki's Delivery Service. I am curious about the sequels. The movie is fantastic too. I actually liked Bookshops and Bonedust better than Legends and Lattes. The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches is such a wonderful book. I also really enjoyed An Enchantment of Ravens. I think it deserves way more love. I own the Elizabeth Lim books but haven't read them yet. I'm trying to read more of my physical tbr this year and get library books online from Libby, so I'm hoping to get to them this year. Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries was exactly what I want from a book about the fae.

I am new to your channel, found you through jessethereader! Thanks so much for this guide! I just got into cozy fantasy through The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches and loved it! A lot of the books in the guide are already on my list of things to read so I am looking forward to all of them! One book I found really cozy/heartwarming is A Constellation of Roses by Miranda Asebedo. The female MC has been on her own for most of her life, either on the run or in foster homes, and finds out she has family in a small town. She goes to live with them and they all have magical abilities. I really loved the found family theme and small-town vibe. One of the family members makes magical food. I found it very cozy and heartwarming but as you said cozy can mean different things for different people.

I think I always gravitated toward cozy stories when I was growing up, and one of my favorite fantasy authors was always Robin McKinley. Most of them would be in the fairy tale category and my absolute favorite is Spindle's End. She also has two versions of Beauty & the Beast that she wrote like 20 years apart, and then I think her Damar series hits more of the classic fantasy tropes.

Thanks for the recommendations! I’m at a point in my life where I’m both physically and mentally exhausted, and I haven’t had any drive to pick up a book. I primarily read science fiction and fantasy and reading something that would require my mental energy has really put me off. I’ve been reading Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erickson for probably a year now for that reason, even though I’m very much enjoying the book. I actually picked up The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches last night, and I’m excited to see how I like it :)

when it comes to cozy fantasy, I think Booktube really hampers itself by not looking at Japanese light novels. The amount of slice of life fantasy available from Japan is huge. Same with the selfpub genres/formats like litrpg and web serials.

    Campfire Cooking in Another World
    Anything written by FUNA

I would really like a slice of life book that has zero plot, just people going about their lives (the less romance the better). The books I've read that were in this video are legends and lattes, tress, and wizard's guide, and they did not feel at all cozy to me. but i guess things like that won't sell (as books. i know i can find this in anime).
i think i'll find myself a copy of kiki's delivery service, it's been a while since i watched the film. i like to separate book and movie adaptations in my head so i don't get expectations. took me years to finally watch howl's moving castle because i saw movie Howl and thought he's not supposed to be handsome (drama queen book Howl > movie Howl)

Elliott i think you'd love The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy. I'd describe it as a fantasy romance with cosy vibes.
The main characters get to know each through anonymous letters which are really sweet, funny and vulnerable.
There is a great family dynamic and wonderful side characters with good queer rep. The writing reminded me of T. Kingfisher as it has darkness mixed with humour.
Both MCs are in their 30s plus the female MC describes herself as 'tall and big boned' AND she wears glasses!
