Here’s the fix needed: An apology video to Sam.

EDIT: The video has been edited to cutout all the parts where John digs into Sam and edits removed dunking on him. I'm glad the changes were made. I wish it was acknowledged in some way, but I'm glad. Thanks to the team 👍
Sam getting dunked on the whole video sucks. Especially digging into him for not catching a 300lb slab getting married to gravity. Damn.

Editing the video to remove the abusive comments towards Sam (as well as when John basically asked Sam to kill himself, in what was the worse shop safety I've ever seen) without an apology comes across as an attempt to hide it. This way there is no evidence of the abuse and John can easily brush it under the rug instead of actually doing better. This is what serial abusers do. You can bet the Sam is still getting yelled at and dunked on, you just won't see it now.
The reactions from John aren't jokes, that's pretty clear. You don't edit out a bunch of "jokes" like this. When someone gets called out and they hide what they are being called out over, it's not progress.
You can't be a better wordworker John unless you fix your mistakes, instead of just hiding them all the time. The biggest mistake you made in this project was having no fucking plan. You clearly had not sat down with the team to go through the steps of the slab. That's what the guys in the video you watched do, not just scream at people when they can't read your mind. 90 percent of running a good shop is planning. You're not running a good shop.

I am an example of what happens when the person "catches it." (and this was thought out in advance by the boss but poorly)Two of use were taking directions from my boss (coincidentally named Jon) at the time at a popular children's museum in CA. I was new at the time so I didn't know much about the boss and trusted him. We were unloading an exhibit from a concrete loading dock and he said he would tip it over and the two of us could catch it because it was "light". The two of us could not tell either way by looking at it. When the Boss tipped it over it was so heavy that it slipped through the hands of the other guy across from me who was in his 60's. I was younger and stronger and managed to get ahold of it. Long story short It jerked me down to the floor and jammed 3 of my vertibrae together grinding part of them away and pinching nerves in the process. It turned out the exhibit weighed almost 450 lbs because they had put lead bricks(yes they exist) inside to weight it at the bottom. IN this case he blamed me for deciding to catch it when it slipped through the other guys hands. Over the next 2 months I lost the feeling in 2 of my fingers in my dominant hand, had severe neck pain and it heavily effected everything from my work to how I slept at night. Yes there was physical therapy and medical covered by the jobs but I will have pain for the rest of my life and there are chunks missing from 2 vertibrae and permanent nerve damage. Even as I type this one of my fingertips can't feel it when it hits the keys. 6 mos later I was fired for failing to meet work performance reviews. I went back to working for myself and have been happier ever since. When someone else is in charge of your safety they need understand what this means. Don't be a John or a Jon.

As someone who has run teams from five or six to over a hundred people in the past, I agree with the comments that you need to apologise to Sam, and not just for the bit about stopping the slab, when your immediate reaction should have been "Are you OK? I'm glad you didn't do anything stupid like trying to catch it". In fact, you should have planned for something like this and told your guys quite clearly "if it starts to go, just get the hell out of the way". You should also avoid throwing tantrums like that in front of your staff. Obviously what happened was heartbreaking, but as the leader you suck it up, make sure everyone else is OK, then throw a fit in private, not in front of your team. I appreciate it might be good content, but it's not good for you as a leader or for your team.
A good manager always puts the welfare and wellbeing of their team first, especially in a potentially dangerous environment like a workshop and, quite honestly, Sam already looks like he's scared witless of you. I'm a big guy too, and we sometimes don't realise how imposing a large, confident man can be to those around them, and while you are probably just joking, it really doesn't look to me like Sam finds it funny. When you make people nervous and jumpy, that's when accidents happen, which is exactly what happened here. You constantly badgering your team to hurry up and mocking them for being slow lead to mistakes being made with the result seen in the video.
You're former NFL, I'm former army, we spent a lot of time in environments where such "banter" is seen as normal and you give as well as you get, but a lot of "normal" people don't see it the same way and you really might want to consider that. It's entirely possible Sam's totally OK with it, but that is not the perception that your videos put across, and as a wise man once said, "it's not what you do that's important, but what you're seen to be doing" and, frankly, you're coming over as a bit of a bully. People don't quit bad jobs, they quit bad managers.

as someone who has full on walked out on a bad manager - I concur (I'm not yet at that part in the video but seemingly from the comments I can piece together what's 'going' to happen) - being treated every single day I worked at that job like I was the shit on the sole of his shoe wore me down like nothing else. He was a disgusting person (not just as a manager but as a person) and expected everyone else to clean up after him - I was NOT hired as a cleaner, I was hired to digitise all of his accounts (he was an accountant), which I did as a casual worker but when he started taking the p*ss by getting me to clean up his *literal* shit in the toilet, his *literal* condoms he left on the office floor and the fact that he would routinely call me every derogatory name under the sun on a daily (hell, hourly) basis - I told him to stuff his job and find someone else to do it because I was done and walked out. Now I get that's not quite what happened here (at least, from your comment) but I agree that people don't quit shitty jobs, they quit shitty people (who happen to be managers) and I've noticed this trend in JM's persona for the last .. few months videos, it doesn't really come as a surprise to see people - essentially - having had enough of it on another's behalf.
"Dramatic content" shouldn't over ride the need for human decency. Regardless of your individual background where "banter" may or may not be "normal".
edit: I got to the part where it happens and it full on gave me anxiety, I'd have walked out (as Sam) and pondered my career choices. He said "I'm scared", I said "I'm terrified" and I wasn't even there (not to mention, we only saw the EDITED version, which I think scares me more because what else went on that we _didn't_ see?)

The first time it was clamped up, the table was a bit higher and you stayed up there. This time, the table was lower and the split second you put your weight on the table is when the clamp shot out. You need to address Sam's good decision to let the table fall, safety first. As you said, you have 2 slabs. You only have 1 Sam.

I agree, it's easy to see the faults in others but it's not easy to see your own. When I was in training to take over an auto parts store when I was 20, I came in with the store manager at 8, first thing he said was that the rug was dirty and the pop cooler was low. The kid who opened at 7 mentioned that he was the one that closed last night alone, on a truck day when we're supposed to have 4, and that he stayed late enough to get the brake rotor pallet put away, and left right after because he had to be back to open... Manager and him had a back and forth where the kid finally said "You always point out the shit we miss, but you never notice that the customers love us and we break our backs because you can't schedule enough staff" kid ended up walking out. I took over the following week and made sure I got him back, made it very clear that if they get busy that they can call someone else to come and help or to call me and I'll come in. That kid took over when I left and last I heard he was taking classes to become a District Manager.

Last video of yours I watch. I have noticed it in other videos but this one was crazy. When you treat your employees like idiots, it doesnt make them want to work harder, it makes them want to look for work elsewhere. How about planning a little bit and setting up the clamps you need before moving a giant slab around. Every single mistake made here was your fault and would have been easily avoided had you assembled the team, explained the plan and asked for input/ opinions. If I were in that position, I would have walked away and let you deal with your own problems. By the way, that clamp setup with an aluminum extrusion was bound to fail, you were clamping on a sharp edge, how about using something flat, anything at all would have been better.

    **This video has been edited**
I'm just going to say that, John, I have absolutely last respect for you. I never leave post on any video, but this is important enough that I actually felt I needed too. In the original video when the clams failed and the table comes crashing down we see Sam dodging out of the way as to not put himself into harms way. At this point the very frustrated and upset John told Sam ”you didn't this of even trying to stop it?!" And now after all the backlash John has had the video edited to cutout all the scenes that show his lack of character. A really man would one never put others in harms way, would never blam other for a general accident, and most importantly not try to hide his mistakes and cover up how much of a complete butt hole he was. You had the chance to make a response video, you had the chance to make it right by your viewer, but you dropped the ball. Funny thing is i hadn't watch many of your videos in a while just because the whole "doing tiktok trends" wasnt my thing, but i gave this one a shot since ot looked interesting and this is what i come back to. Im glad that the only thing hurt in the video was your pride. Maybe it'll humble you enought to change the way your treat your staff, because from the looks of it you dont treat them with much respect. Maybe you weren't raised right or you just forgot what your mama taught you, but where im from I was always told to treat other the way that I wanted to be treated.

    • @mehere8299
      @mehere8299 6 дней назад +1

It's not about how people like this are raised; it's about how they learn to handle failure as a young adult. A fully mature adult - man or woman - takes responsibility for his or her actions and decisions. They don't find someone else to blame, and they don't try to hide the result of their poor decision-making when things go south. They accept responsibility freely and without complaint.
John did the opposite. Instead of taking the time and effort to plan out the bend and making all reasonable precautions needed to mitigate risk, he chose to throw common sense out the window and by doing so intentionally put Sam in a dangerous situation. He blamed Sam for failing to work a miracle so he didn’t have to blame himself for having demanded the impossible out of his staff.
The worst part of it is that he seems to think his error here was verbally abusing Sam, ie. hurting his feelings. His actual errors were a) putting Sam at unnecessary risk of injury through poor planning, and b) blaming Sam so he didn’t have to take full responsibility for said poor planning. It's not Sam's feelings that are the issue; it's John's failures. He can't accept that every failure in this video (and in his life in general) is 100% his responsibility and, in this case, 100% his fault, so he tries to make Sam out as the perpetrator.
It's chillingly similar to the modus operandi of domestic abusers, who set their partners up to fail with calculated malevolence so they have an excuse to abuse them when they inevitably fail. They like to proffer tearful "sincere" apologies while erasing the evidence too.

He reflexively reacted in a split second and made the correct decision to save himself from serious injury or worse. And to even have a chance of catching that thing safely you'd have to be a huge mfer, with free hands, in perfect position, and also not have the human reaction of jumping out of the way of huge, heavy things falling toward you very quickly. Maybe don't rely on a couple of small clamps below the center of gravity of an object that weighs hundreds of pounds that you have standing on end? As someone who works in the quality field, that's exactly why you pay attention to quality, processes, checklists and all that boring crap. I know it's a small shop, I know it's boring stuff, but it can save not only money but potentially lives. Rattly old clamps can kill.
This isn't definitely just a John Malecki thing, many youtubers I follow also appear to work in a very sloppily managed shop, which ends up being unsafe even if you have all your PPE and ShopShades and stuff.

Banter can only be called such when it's a two way street. When it's not a two way street, it's called abuse.
this was not a two way street.
Also, expecting Sam who's about 1/4 the size of John to "try to catch" that monstrous slab in order to "save it" is moronic. At best you've got an employee with broken bones. At worst, you're planning a funeral. Joking or not, that's not right. On any count. No one says "I'm scared" in that small of a voice unless they're honestly rattled and honestly scared. I was *terrified* and I wasn't even there. Not to mention the entire video triggered my PTSD and anxiety through the abuse John was hurling at his employees - as I've gone through abuse like that as an employee (in a different line of work) that still affects me now (clearly). No one deserves to be treated like that, spoken to like that, especially when the boss himself doesn't have a clue what he's doing and has no plan.

Getting out of the way of that falling slab was the best move! Safety first! You can fix or replace products. Now the possible resulting injury, medical bills, lost time from work, recovery, any investigations, fines (OSHA or similar if you fall into that category), all add up to be a lot more expensive than redoing or modifying the project. Who knows, if Sam did try to catch it and it still broke, that adds even more salt to the wound.

I think most of the time he actually doesn't mean what he says when things go wrong like that. I have actually had friends and people I worked with who during the time it happened, they would say things like what he said to Sam about catching the desk and then afterwards they would come back and apologize cause the heat of the moment got to them. We don't know what happened off camera and although it would be really nice to see him come back and say it on camera for us viewers, I hope he did just make sure his workers were alright after the whole thing. Like he wrote on screen, if no one spoke for supposedly two hours, its like they were in shell shock over what had happened.
But I don't know him personally, I can only know what I see on screen. I only have my own experience to pull from and what I see in his habits on screen. Maybe thats me wanting to believe in the best in people... but I would hope that is the case.
