I'm curious if you have given any thought to long term wear on the veneer from removing and replacing the step ladder? My biggest hurdle in designing/building something is trying to not over build or over design it. I would have been very tempted to install some small stainless wear pads between the ladder and panel so the ladder isn't rubbing on the veneer. Maybe the ladder has some small rubber bumpers on the back and this isn't needed. Just curious.
@@MichaelAlmThis is a clear case of over engineering. A plexiglass slide plate glued to the floor of the cabinet and plexiglass bumpers on the wall would have been simpler as well as giving you more room to play with.
The next step is to ORDER ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE LADDERS because if something happens to the one you bought there is a 100% chance it will be right after they're no longer sold.
I feel the closing sequence was a missed opportunity to have Mrs. Alm seated on the opposite side of the stool with her own drink and some smooth jazz. Fade to black.
Using every bit of space was the best part when we built in our Ikea kitchen ourselves. I left one panel off to create place for a stepladder and on the other end I built in a pullout broom closet in the 17cm between the oven and the wall. Super handy 🙂
That is a nice little cabinet. I have a space like that in the kitchen. About 25 years ago I just put a folding step stool in there without making a cabinet. It's been useful.
Although it surely looks less finished, the open pocket is even more functional. Think of the thousands of times you didn't need to open and close a cabinet to access your step stool!
I did something similar to our semi-custom Ikea kitchen. Instead of covering up with a panel, we inset magnets on a lip attached to the front panel. The lip lifts up the weight at the bottom front and just slips off when we need access to our extra sheet pans , cutting boards, etc. did it to the bottom and top cabinets at the end of the run next to a wall. We really like those kind of touches.
Gave me an idea here. Build the step ladder drawer like he did, make it thicker 8-10 inches maybe and have your sheet pans on the back side. Top mount instead of side mount, or even make 2 pullouts side by side, but I think one would be better. You could put two pockets for your pans, and put you wire racks on top. It's nice reading others comment to expand upon. Hope to build a house in the near future and these ideas are being organized.
Love projects like this that make use of bits of wasted space. Done a few similar ones in my parents kitchen. Making them be for specific propose is also really good because whenever you make another drawer or space for things, it inevitably just gets filled with more stuff rather than help declutter what is already in the kitchen I still remember the year I organised everything for hem, got a bunch of pot lid racks, tray racks, made a bunch of space, then my brother bought two dozen containers and a metric ton of different flavours of tea and now all that space is full and the kitchens was back to being a cluttered mess.
Great job. It's amazing how these little spaces don't get used and just covered with infill panels. I helped a friend install his first fitted wardrobe project (flat pack). No matter how they played with it on cad they just could not avoid a 6" space at the end. So instead just covering it up I lined it, fitted shelves on adjustable pins, hinged the infill panel and fitted a RF ID lock. Now they have a secret panel for storage of valuables.
Memo to self: marry someone with saw skills and a passion for woodworking. “Yes, dear, you can buy all the tools you want, if you build us a dream kitchen with awesome custom cabinets.”
Also the tools he has are more expensive than the kitchen. You can spend one third on the tools and get the same kitchen. It is all relative. Skills are the most important, but those can be acquired.
I'm kind of surprised that with such a small kitchen and dong it all yourself you are not putting in toe kick drawers. This has been amazing to watch and see this transformation!
Your attention to detail is amazing! I love to watch RUclips that build things, so watching you was a dream. A cabinet for the ladder was genius. Beautiful work and thank you for sharing!
This was so impressive and something I would have loved to have had in my kitchen as I’m even shorter than your wife. Also I love your workshop, nothing better than having the right tools. Thanks so much for sharing.
I have a near-identical spot in my kitchen. It's got a tall skinny drawer, and it's where we keep all our cutting boards. It was originally designed as a dishtowel drying rack tho??? Which is an absurd usecase...because you'd need to keep the drawer open for hours (blocking the perpendicular cabinet) for it to work.
I wish Rubio would admit that you can apply more than one coat of RMC. Great job. I work for the "other" woodworking store and often recommend to customers to apply two coats if the want more sheen.
What an amazing set of videos Michael... As a kitchen designer (albeit for a big box "flat pack" store) I absolutely share the joy of putting this all together and really maximising the space, but this stool idea is the best yet... I often use a 6 inch wide cabinet in lieu of a filler because it's just wasted space otherwise and I'm going to suggest this to my customers instead of a wine rack or pull out rack which will certainly not last
Now that the cabinets are installed. I came up with an idea for my vertically challenged wife. I was thinking of a way to install a step in the toe kicks. have them on rails that slide out, and when you step on the spring-loaded platform it will drop about an inch to rest on legs, so the glides don't have to support the weight. This would allow her to work on the counters more easily, but the step stool is great for getting anything off anything higher than the bottom shelf in the upper cabinets. I want to build my own home in the next few years and may accidentally put an extra 6 (not 5) inches somewhere for this idea. The extra inch will open up the choices of step stools. I wish I had found this last month.
Here in Europe we have spice rack cabinets starting around 13cm wide.... But a step ladder compartment is nice too; especially if someone in the house isn't tall enough to reach the upper cabinets fully..
Mr Alm, as a member of The Proper and Decent Usage of Clamps; You were a bit abusive when dropping and flinging those clamps after you were finished with them. I hope in the future you'll be more conscientious of how you treat the clamps. Thank you for your time, and the generally great and non-clamp abusive videos.
I did include a step ladder in my recent Kitchen Rebuild. I had to sand away some of the rubber feet to make it fit. I also had a space where I could insert a custom wine rack and this cabinet balanced the cabinets with the kitchen window perfectly because it was a custom cabinet.
Nice one. Years ago, I built drawers into the toe kicks of a couple of cabinets that make part of the pantry in our kitchen so that we could hide the cat's bowls when not in use. They are in a recessed area, so even with the drawers pulled out, there isn't a trip risk. I almost made a third to house a step, but couldn't find one thin enough to fit the space. The one you used would have worked!
Great work making use of that space! We have that same Bosch dishwasher...it's amazing to say the least. Keep sharing the progress! I know it takes a tremendous amount of time to record and produce quality content, so thank you for sharing!
I love your intelligence and precision, which always makes the funny moments that much better by contrast. I thought the funniest part of the video was the step ladder date night ad on Amazon, but the ending with your version was pure gold. Just perfection. 🙌🙌🙌 Also, I love the solutions you come up with! Great use of that space and great idea to make those custom cleats so the ladder slide in securely. I think 99% of people (myself included) would have just left an open cubby space to slide the ladder into, which would wear down / scratch both the cubby and the ladder with use. This is a seamless solve.
That outro! 🤣 Great use of such a narrow space. My first thought was cookie sheets, but the step ladder is a great idea. Now, I'm thinking if I could fit a stepstool cabinet into my kitchen somewhere... and should I replace my old reliable stepstool with that sexy date night one? lol
i have a 5cm gap and found some steps 4cm when folded, very handy to have in the kitchen. i just chuck them in the gap though, no fancy drawer like yours.
I am not a woodworker but you just blew my mind when I noticed you slowing down to a snail's pace at the end of cuts on your table saw to (I'm assuming) reduce the frayed edge or tear-out as you called it. That tape trick was cool also!
I had a space like that in my kitchen remodel and made it into a shelf for cutting boards. It was cool to see that you used it for a stool which is what you needed.
I asked for the tiny cabinet for a 2 step ladder in our utility room next to the kit hen. Hubby put in a door on hinges and no base cabinet bottom or slide out. The door swins open, I reach in and pull it out. The steps show a smidge if I dont push them in. BUT. The important part is how convenient it is!
I can’t wait to see how it all turns out! At the same time I don’t want it to end, surely there are a million ways to improve a house even after the remodel is considered “done”.
You sir, get a like just for taking the Michael out of the advert. The draw was excellent, the build was perfect, the ending was icing on the cake. Love it.
Get a Kickstool (sold by library supply companies) and store in your pantry. I use it almost daily and you can take it to other locations in the house easily.
Don't you want to also add a oak front cover to the dishwasher so it nicely blends into the rest of the cabinets? Where I live it's very common to do that to all appliances in the kitchen.
Your flip utility knife kind of looks like the one by Exceed Designs! I have one and the quality is unmatched, plus they are local PNW (Walla Walla, WA) :) Not affiliated or anything but I was looking for a flip utility knife that is sleek and solid for a while and ran across them. They are constantly adding improvements but their latest version of their TiRant Razor utility knife is perfect! Highly suggest to anyone who wants a really well made knife for very reasonable price (comparing to flip knives, not construction utility knife prices lol) Also I think I'll be ordering that same step stool haha great vid as always
Michael, you are the GOAT. How many kitchens I have designed and wanted a sweet solution for 5 6 or 7 or 8 inches leftover. I’m inspired and my next kitchen has a base area that will be getting a ladder tucked in. When you calculate between two walls, you get what you get.
it would make a great sheet pan drawer. We are currently putting ours in the gap between out stove and cabinet but that means their actually on the floor. It sucks having to wash them before we can use them only to wash them again when we're done with them.
nice use of space. the only thing i would add is that a 1/8 saw kerf between the door panel and the drawer panel rather than glue one directly to the other. that way the gaps and spaces remain consistent through out the cabinets
Amazing video super informative. One thing to note most of the power tools have a reasonable volume but the router is just super loud with headphones Keep up the great work!
Clever use of that dead space. I like the cabinet design - although, I may have just drilled some through-holes in the inside panel so I wouldn't have to take the side off to install that cabinet.
That little dance though! Ah great video Michael. I was thinking of building a little cabinet like that for a mini pantry. Great place to put a step ladder and I can fully sympathise with your wife as I'm just over 5ft and upper cabinets are a pain in the proverbial.
Beautiful kitchen so far. I do wish you had simulated the space between drawers and cabinets in your drawer front on this video. The only thing that keeps me from calling it perfection.
I saw this and immediately thought of making one that’s lockable and putting an underfolder AK, mags, and ammo in that without using a slider mechanism
We have those same drawer pulls, having used them now for about a year, I’d suggest softening the edges of them. We’ve had multiple scrape/cut issues with them.
Those oak-panels you have made are so nice. Some might even say wood-pr0n. I wish my kitchen would have such but oak is expensive material and I am bad woodworker so I merely fancy yours from far away.
Love the cabinet! Nit-picky question: Any reason you didn’t add a shadow line or space between the “drawer front” and the “cabinet door” parts? It doesn’t match/line up with the other side of the dishwasher.
I have probably said that commenting on your previous videos, but I absolutely love your kitchen. I already started planning a ladder drawer for myself :D
Thanks for watching! Plans are up on the site for pre-order www.almfab.com/store/p/mini-kitchen-cabinet-with-step-stool-storage-presale

Love the ending of the video. Might have to grab me one of those step ladders. My wife and I have been missing that extra romance in our lives. 😂
Perfect for date nights 😉

Beautiful ending lol, the cabinet is cool too. This series has been so entertaining to watch through.
I love the ending😂. Great job, i am really inspired
Hahaha! Thanks
Indeed. Joking in the promo video was hilarious.
I was like "WTF?...oh the Amazon video🤣🤣🤣🤣!"
Pretty sure Mrs Almfab took her drink into the other room muttering something about “ nope…!” lol
Great video!

lol love the reference to the step ladder video.
with a wall there, you could use a much thinner plywood on the wall side.
Excellent addition. I would consider putting a coating or self-adhesive sandpaper on the stool steps.

I laughed out loud at the shower exit/ladder dance/drinks table scene, at the end!
Date night on the step stool goes hard 🔥🔥🔥
Step stool marketing team needs a raise 😂
Hey there, I made a similar rack for our kitchen pots, works perfectly and we love it. Greetings from Germany
Stepladder is great but now where do you put the tortilla press? I also wonder where the heart shaped waffle iron would go.
I think you should make a wooden stepladder to match the design/function of this plastic one, so it matches your kitchen!!! It would last 100 years!
Clever use of that dead space. I like the cabinet design - although, I may have just drilled some through-holes in the inside panel so I wouldn't have to take the side off to install that cabinet.
I ended up with a small gap next to my dishwasher like this. So I made it into a draw where I store the dishwasher tabs, rinse aid, and salt.
The drawer face is so slick yet easy to make 👍

Beautiful work, Michael! Really well done! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
😂 the ending got me too...
For some odd reason, I thought you were getting one of those dishwashers you could put a face on.
That ending tho. 😂
As always, impeccable craftsmanship and a joy to watch in action.
25:15 I used the same tile in my bathroom. I used the 12x24 but looking back I wish I used the 6x24.
I saw this and immediately thought of making one that’s lockable and putting an underfolder AK, mags, and ammo in that without using a slider mechanism
The commercial at the end was epic! Great build!
Very clever idea. Excellent execution. Entertaining video. Trifecta!
Best. Ending. Ever. 😂🤣
😂
Add magnets and hardware to a faux filler strip and you have a bigger inside space for ladder
We have those same drawer pulls, having used them now for about a year, I’d suggest softening the edges of them. We’ve had multiple scrape/cut issues with them.
Thanks for the heads up, but they must not be the exact same because these are super smooth.
Awsome Design and Brilliant Work!
Looks great, Michael. You needed a way to plank across the top of the cabinets ala Shaun Boyd. Maybe once the counter top is installed.

Nice job Michael! Thanks for sharing the video with us! i like how you did your own take on the step stool at the end lol 💖👍😎JP
Awesome job Michael! 😃👍🏼👊🏼 .... I hope you uploaded that end clip as your video review of the stool on Amazon 😂

Thanks! I debated about that for a while, but didn’t want to compromise the strength of the drawer front. It could be added in later if it bugs me.
Here's a shoutout to all the step ladders, who stayed where the real ladders decided to walk away
Freaking incredible - congrats Michael!
I have probably said that commenting on your previous videos, but I absolutely love your kitchen. I already started planning a ladder drawer for myself :D
