hey, i love your style. not putting on an act like, just a regular dude talking to the audience like we were in the room learning from you. Awesome! Keep it up!
You can build a rolling cart for when you spray the refrigerator panels to move them in and out of the spray booth. Also you really need to spray the back of the face frames and anywhere else because the back absorb humidity if they are not sealed .
Another great video on spraying technique! I am a DYI’er and use a Fuji HVLP sprayer, but you have to considerably thin down water-based paint (I use SW Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel) which leaves it susceptible to runs on vertical surfaces. I’m surprised you can get such a nice finish with an airless setup. Kudos to you and Jason on cranking out these kitchen cabinets and getting them finished up! Can’t wait to see the install video.
Aside from the great skill at cabinet building and painting, the most interesting thing to me is how a pro batches out work and stays efficient. That's someone really thinking about their work
The best people to learn from are Dennis Rodriguez and Eric reason. I took one of their cabinet painting classes and just with that can lay down a really nice finish. And I’m a doctor not a pro finisher.
I changed out my stock hose for a 7’ 1/4” hose, coupled with a 4’ 3/16” whip. Cuts down on material waste and is more maneuverable than the hose the gun comes with 🤝🏽
❤❤ i’m so glad that you explain what you’re doing while you’re doing it. Some stations I watch they just work work work no words nothing you have. No clue is what they’re doing how they’re doing. You and Jason work so well together I can’t believe you all got all of that done that fast amazing and it looks good. Can’t wait to see it all put together.😊😊😊
Painter here and I even actually learnt a lot from this video. Really awesome setup. One thing I got to say though, airless systems are great IF you can manage the overspray. You obviously did that great with your filtration system, but otherwise it can really ruin your finish pretty quickly. Anyways, thanks for that video!
Nice video, the term used when mixing the 2 gals of paint together is called boxing, and yes that’s the best method when painting large jobs and when you need extra paint for touch up. Keep up the good work.
I used to paint cars and I know exactly what you mean with unmasking. It's such a satisfying feeling when the project is done and that paper comes off.
Really nice build, start to finish. I'm like you, HVLP's are pains in the ass to set-up and use. (Especially on face frames.) I bought, and sold, an expensive Apollo 5 HVLP and kept my Fuji 4 just to spray dye stains and toners. I'm a retired cabinetmaker and come from the AAA sprayers. They are pricey to start with, but man can they lay down a beautiful finish. I like how you are not afraid to actually apply some finish, instead of people I see using HVLP who make 3 and 4 passes instead of 1, maybe 2. And the star of the show, for me anyway, are the Lamello Tensos to attach the face frame. I did commercial work and everything was frameless, but now that I'm retired and don't have an edgebander, I build face frames and use the Lamello to attach them. Thanks again for a quality set of videos, I have definitely subscribed.
Incredibly helpful vid. Could have used this when I decided to refinish my kitchen cabs during lockdown. Had to do it a few times to get it adequate. First mistake was not using high quality primer.
I love your youtube channel Josh!! Def helps so I don't have to bother you on Instagram with questions. Almost feels like you are talking to me directly. Great job man and great to see your process for things. Makes me feel better about my style. Keep the videos coming.
I helped my high school buddy start a paint/resto business a few years back. The only sprayers he started with were one of those cheap greco's, and he found a used titan 440 that was beat to hell and back. We used that little piece of crap greco for everything. We painted entire houses with it. When i say we beat the absolute brakes off that thing, that would be a massive understatement. We literally couldn't kill it. Finally, some ahole tried running un-thinned dry lok through it when it was on its last legs, and it killed the gears inside. Heres the real kicker, it finished the basement job before it died. It sprayed gallons of pudding like drylok before finally giving in. Greco made me a buyer for life with that little sprayer. We've bought high boys since. 2 of them they've lasted about 6 months. Idk if that sprayer was special or if all those little x-5's are absolute units, but god damn, if it was up to me, I would have dug it a grave and buried it. Little thing out worked us all.
May I make a suggestion regarding your “twirly thing”? If you attach a lazy Susan mechanism to the bottom of the stand the paint won’t clog the bearings. You can make the base wider for stability and cover the lazy Susan rings with a panel to prevent the overspray from clogging the bearings. An added benefit is that you can turn the stand with your foot. I have been using a swivel base barstool turned upside down for years for painting.
Loved the video. I"ve started to spray my cabinets myself over the last few years. I use the fugi q5 hvlp. I just recently switched to waterbase topcoates like Gallery by SW. Love seeing how different people make, assemble & spray their cabinets.
Man that's got me super interested. I actually have one of those pumps i used for painting my fence but have been using HVLP for the good portion of the last 5 years and eh decent success but not as good as I would like I think. It takes some talent though I would say idk Gonna have to try the airless soon here though.
Can you post a Short of the difference in viscosity between the unthinned vs thinned product? Since the 308 is recommended for stains, that primer is significantly thicker than that so I’m curious how thin you make it to get it through that tip.
Great video! Just a thought, for those small projects or a redo etc you could always have one of Gracos quick shots on hand. Less waste and machine setup/cleanup too
Awesome video Josh. I was also using a turbine HVLP and spraying CV until I tried this evo with an airless after seeing you use it. World of difference in application and smell in the shop. Only thing I did different was get the x19 with the hoper.
bro....shocked to see you spraying with the X5. i was convinced i needed an hvlp since that's all i see everyone using on YT....but i already have an X7 that i bought for painting some rooms in the house. i was going to sell it but maybe i'll give it a shot spraying some pieces and see how it works out. cabinets look sick...love the color.
Hvlp does not work with modern high performance wood coating without massive modifications (pressurized hvlp or thinning which you’re not supposed to do much). Renner/envirolak/centurion are other top tier finishes.
Great vid! Question on your spraying equipment. Do you clean and empty your graco in between each coat or will it keep in the hose and pumps with out setting up?
Great video, thanks for the content. Looks like it will be a beautiful kitchen! I just learned about the 308 FFLP tip and man is it great! Very nice control. Can you share what brand and type of paint and primer you used? Also, did you guys use prefinished plywood for the boxes? Thanks!
I've been using an automotive spray gun for about 20 years. I used to use ML Campbell Magnamax but Wurth stop carrying it. Now I use Chemcraft but am looking for a water based option due to smell. Thanks for the info, I'm going to try the Evo on my next project and see how it goes.
Looks great! I’m curious what you are doing with the toe kick? You may be saving that as a surprise for the install video… but if not I’d like to know 😂
Great commentary and easy to follow. You labeled each drawer front and cabinet doors, then painted, how did you label them to keep track of where each went after the painting?
This is great information. Do you ever have issues with a single topcoat being too thin on outside corners, allowing the primer to show through? I've seen this with dark colors with the paint I use (SW Emerald). When this happens I have to apply a second coat. What paint are you using? Does it read thin on edges? And if so, how to you address it; tinted primer, two coats, a larger corner radius? Thanks for the guidance, and keep up the great content.
In the process of building a new shop, and want to do a clean room/spray room. How big is yours accounting for the exhaust/downdraft. I also noticed that you don’t have a door on the spray room. Is this an issue for when things are drying.
Lacquer is no joking matter. My professional painter friend Paul in New Mexico lost his son in a painting mishap. His son was in a house spraying lacquer on cabinets without adequate ventilation and was poisoned to death by the vapor.
I really like your content and presentation style. Very helpful to understand your technique. It would be awesome if you could list the tools and materials you used in the description. Also interesting coincidence I too previously lived in Hawai’i.
Got ? What brand of finish paint, and are you shooting paint straight out the can without thinning? How long does the primer and finish paint take to dry before handling it or sanding it?
For paint as you said 90% of time is in preparing the surfaces, the actual painting is only 10% of the time for high quality painting. Your booth is a little narrow for my taste but your recirculating filtering is first rate, I would like to see wall lighting added to eliminate shadows and make it easier to spray. Closing the door to paint booth so no dust enters during spraying and drying is highly recommended. I prefer air vs airless but to get clean dry air at volume and pressures needed for all typs of paint requires about $20K plus thousands more for guns and body suit with seperate air supply but all your pnematic tools used in your shop will benefit and last much longer. Ray
Wow, that looks FANTASTIC! Question: what about the toe kick? Do you install one long board (me thinks) or individual pieces between each leg? I assume that will need to be painted too (and maybe already was, but just not shown there at the end? Anyway, I hand painted my kitchen cabinets and...well they looked hand painted. While yours...look like they were a poured gel that hardened into doors! Beautiful end result.
Paint store worker here. He's absolutely correct when it comes to those X5's giving great finish. I refinished my moms cabinets with them. However, they are that cheap anymore. Closer to 400 dollars. And if you want the best finish you will need a graco rac x blue gaurd and a fine finish low pressure tip. Those run about another 100 dollar but will give an absolute glass finish
Hey there! question regarding the pump/tip combo. is there something else that you needed to purchase for it to all fit together? I bought the tip but it doesn't seem to fit in the red guard that comes with the x5 pump
Isn't that paint a water based lacquer? Is this your favorite paint for cabinets? I struggle with finding a paint with enough durability. Ive tried Ben Moore Advance and Insulex Cabinet Coat with mixed results.
Is there a type of MDF pannel you use? When I use reg. MDF there are hairline wiggly strans that shadows through. You only see them on the finish coat.
I bought an X5 a few years ago to spray the outside of my shop and shed. Works great but man, does it really go through the paint! I've been contemplating either refinishing (painting), my existing kitchen cabinets or building new. Either way it will involve painting and it's great to see the X5 can work for this with great results. Question - does the 308 FF tip fit on the X5 out of the box, or did you have to change the guard. I've read where it won't fit with the standard guard. Thanks for the great content!
I’ve got to say you are a perfectionist and the quality that you build is amazing. Unfortunately you don’t get quality like that anymore
Jason sent me. Happy to be here. Subscribed!

Yeah they work great
Great on video/pictures, not so great in person or to the touch.
@ lol
Do you HAVE to thin using the graco?
Would love to see more about how you clean and store your sprayers and how you minimize paint loss
I’ve really been impressed with my Graco “Quick Shot” sprayer for smaller jobs - same spray tip as what you’re using. Really handy and, cordless.
Amazing work. I like your style--no BS, not trying to entertain--just showing us how you do your craft. Great job!
Ya boy Jason showing me this great channel. Thanks for all the tips man! Gearing up for some projects next year!
Dude! Literally dropped my jaw at the quality of this finish 😍 (not to mention the overall work/craftsmanship). Outstanding! 👏
It's great watching a true professional at work.
A great example of how valuable the Lamello is for anyone who does their own finishing.
Truly amazing quality, fantastic job!
Awesome workshop too, a carpenter's dream!

Great vid. I’m a cabinet maker in Australia and we send ur stuff out for paint but great to see this vid. Nice work.
Now you need to go to Bourbon Moths shop and build something there with him! Looking forward to your guys future collabs
Excellent video! Thank you for the content.

Awesome. Thanks for watching
AWESOME BREAKDOWN!
Great job man, you do such detail is good to watch.
I just watched Jason's video on the build, can't wait for the install!
I’m an auto painter. Dude, beautiful work lovely finish!
I am looking forward to the installation and reveal of this job. Two masters of the craft collaborating, is interesting to watch.
Nice video, the term used when mixing the 2 gals of paint together is called boxing, and yes that’s the best method when painting large jobs and when you need extra paint for touch up. Keep up the good work.
That paint is freakin flawless!! Fantastic job!
Great workmanship! Takes me back to working in the wood working shops.

good stuff....."rock on, till da break of light"......
WOW nice Job, i learned a lot....thanks!

What grit sandpaper do you use before priming? Do you go up grits when you sand in between coats?
10/10
Tuyệt vời lắm 👍👍 chúc mừng bạn nhé 🎉🎉
Great commentary and easy to follow. You labeled each drawer front and cabinet doors, then painted, how did you label them to keep track of where each went after the painting?
