People don’t realize a turbo engine doesn’t need to work as hard.. makes its power at lower rpms. Lexus/ Toyota has many examples of high miles turbo engines. Take care of them and they will last.
Nonsense. If power is being made, work is being done . Nothing is free in physics. High 11:1 compression combined with compressed induction charge equals higher stresses and more heat.
The 4.0 was GOATED! But the 3.5 is just meh, and everyone hated it so much now they praise it like a god, its reliable but its sooooo slow and underpowered. I just traded my 3rd gen for a 2024 and the thing legit rips
@Drewster327 I think you nailed it. The 4.0 may have been the best motor the Tacoma ever got, the 3.5 is ok. And the 2.4 rips. I have 8500 miles on mine now and it’s been great!
I have always heard that the v6 was famous for having the power of a 4 cylinder, with the gas mileage of a v8. Why is that considered legendary in a Toyota, but if another brand did that, it would be condemned? No sarcasm intended, just an honest question. Ive never understood this.
I have a 21 Trd OR with the 6sp auto “Gearhunter” transmission. 😂 I’ll probably trade mine in next year, I also want to see how the hybrid max does. I think the turbo 4 longevity will be fine as long as people change their oil enough. I’m also of the school of: change oil 1st time at 1k miles, then every 5 or 6k miles after that. Do not do 10k mile oil changes! I really like the Solar Octane color 👍🏻
Yeah that transmission was a deal killer for me😂 which sucks because I loved my Tacoma. I’m also super excited to see the new hybrid max. I should have some showing up at my dealership in the next 3 months and I’m going to do a drive video with it. Thank you for watching!
Thank you! That’s kind of what I was expecting since the tundra has a 10 speed. I guess toyota decided the 8 speed was sufficient. And I must say I don’t feel like the 8 speed is missing anything. I sure like it!
My Solar Octane TRD Off Road is going on 2 weeks now sitting at the dealership over a grill shutter malfunction. I love my truck but the "reliability" question has already been answered IMO. You're going to get a grill shutter malfunction also, because from what I've seen on the forums, everyone eventually gets it. For me it happened at 3 months and 2,800 miles. Toyota should do a recall but they don't want their new truck making bad headlines on youtube and auto blogs.
That sucks I’m sorry to hear that. I work at a toyota dealership and We had 2 of our very first 24 Tacomas throw that code. I’m assuming if you’ve had yours 3 months you probably got one of the first batch that had that issue. They actually shut down production for about a month and held all the trucks that had been built at the time. (Im assuming to address that issue) We haven’t seen any of the Tacomas have that issue since. And I actually did a video on here where I wrapped the connector that gets water in it with electrical tape. I haven’t had any issues with mine yet and I’ve driven through streams. The connector wasn’t submerged but it definitely got wet. In any case I hope they get your truck fixed soon and you can get back to enjoying it! Thanks for watching!
You SIR get 2 extra points.. VERY good CORRECT you need to change your oil and filter EVERY 1000 miles for the first 5,000 miles THAN normal oil change intervals. That is how you break a motor in to last FOREVER.
Yeah what’s weird is I kinda did my own estimations when the gas ones came out and figured it would be 60-65k. What blows my mind is how cheap the Ranger raptor is🫣 I wish toyota would have at least given us long travel for 65k
Right now I personally think it will have issues but like Toyota always does when they work out the kinks and it will be have it's solid Toyota reliability
I still haven't seen any 2 door SR models. I just buy the base models and hopefully Toyota will produce some. I know they would rather sell the high end models but I like to keep it simple and in budget. Thanks for the driving video.
I haven’t seen any either. The Lowest trim I’ve seen is an sr5 and we don’t have anything lower than that coming in to my dealership in the next 90 days. It definitely seems like they’re just producing the high end ones right now! No problem and I appreciate you watching and commenting on all of my videos!
I think the price increase was too much as well. I can see it going up because there’s a TON more options in the new ones but idk about it being $6500 more
Its not fast but it builds the power early and is consistent with it. The engine and transmission are a good combo. Ive had mine for about a month now and I've left behind plenty of 23 tacomas behind without stepping on it. 😂
That is accurate! They work really well together! I have a 23 vs 24 drag race coming out soon. You’ll have to watch it! And what kind of 24 did you get?
This is not the same 2.4 liter turbo that's in Toyota cars and SUV's. It has a heavier duty engine block and larger turbo. This is the same engine that's in the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser and 2025 Toyota 4Runner. The chief engineer for the Tacoma called it commercial grade. Thanks for the great review.
What do you think of the new Tacoma?

I still remember when people hated the new 3.5L V6 in 2016😅
It kinda feels like people just hate change 🤷🏽♂️
Yes, the old 4.0 liter was more torquey. The 3.5 doesn’t make much low down torque at all. At least it’s reliable.
Didn’t it have a lot of vvti problems ??😅😂

Do you notice and strange harmonic vibration noises in tbe cabin While shifting at low rpms?
I can’t say I do.

Dude you are spot on it's the same impression I have on mine it's a great truck
Hell yeah man! They are fun little trucks!
Peak torque is achieved at 1700 rpm. That is cruising rpm’s. I love my new 24 TRD off-road.
They are so nice to drive!

Hey...nice content. Just curious why Toyota didn't go with a 10 speed auto?
Thank you! That’s kind of what I was expecting since the tundra has a 10 speed. I guess toyota decided the 8 speed was sufficient. And I must say I don’t feel like the 8 speed is missing anything. I sure like it!

Also… solar octane is the best color available 💪🏽
Especially with the Tundra engines grenading, they sure don't want MORE headlines.
Why not avoid all this drama and just go Nissan?
You should do an oil change right now if you haven’t already. 👍
You SIR get 2 extra points.. VERY good CORRECT you need to change your oil and filter EVERY 1000 miles for the first 5,000 miles THAN normal oil change intervals. That is how you break a motor in to last FOREVER.
The trd pro Tacoma is $65000. Are you shitting me?
Yeah what’s weird is I kinda did my own estimations when the gas ones came out and figured it would be 60-65k. What blows my mind is how cheap the Ranger raptor is🫣 I wish toyota would have at least given us long travel for 65k
dam it's over 10,000x
Right now I personally think it will have issues but like Toyota always does when they work out the kinks and it will be have it's solid Toyota reliability
I agree. I was talking to one of my mechanics and he said we went through the same thing in 2016. They have bugs, toyota fixes them 👍
That’s a pretty truck. #goals.
Brake boost on the turbo engines on a 0-60 makes a tremendous difference
Yeah that’s a good point. I didn’t even think of that. But it did have some turbo lag. That would have made a huge difference
Your leaving out the engine longevity and the more cost to maintain a turbo engine
Toyota wants you to buy now, snd sweat those pesky details after the warranty expires. Just write the check now please.

I paused right at 60 and it was 9.66 0-60 🤓☝🏼
Oh perfect. I’ll let my stopwatch lady know that her reaction time is slow😂
@@counterfeitcowboy1362 I’d just fire her if I were you. Can afford mistake like that😤
@@michaeljensen1123 lol yeah I guess. Free help is free help😂
I need to get me one of those. TOYOTA!!!!
Do it! Trade in the ram😂
Engine metal shavings at no extra charge
What elevation
My daily drive is between 2700’ and 4500’
I love the new 4Gen, but $6500 more? From the last 3gen, I think it's too much.
Choosing the same packages.

What a joke 10 seconds to hit 60. Ill Put up my pink slip on my 2015 4.0 against that thing any day.

Yeah I believe they said it’s only 40% the same motor
