THE LAST WILDERNESS OF SCOTLAND || A canoe expedition into a remote corner of the SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS

  • At the start of 2020, my friend Ian Finch and I wanted to travel up to Scotland to paddle around some lochs for a few days. But after the year's events, we had to postpone our trip. After spending most of the year indoors, in late September we were finally able to embark on our journey, but now it needed to be so much more. This film documents our attempt at completing a circuit linking up a collection of remote lochs with a series of portages. Our journey was challenged by the power of the elements, forcing us to discuss options and make sacrifices and adaptations to our plan. See the full article and photographs at: www.sidetracked.com/last-wild...

I do not make any profit from these films. Although I get incredible support from brands for the trips, the costs during the editing process and the licensing of third-party assets (such as music) come from my own pocket. Whilst I know there are options for revenue from RUclips advertising, I want people to enjoy the film without interruptions. If you would like to support me with the editing of future films, you can buy me a coffee at the link below. All contributions will be invested strictly into future productions. Don't mean to be geeky but an unusual fact about Loch Maree is that the largest island, Eilean Subhainn contains a loch that itself contains an island, a situation that occurs nowhere else in Britain (an island on an island on an island).

@@JamieBarnes Why Didn't you just Say in Wester Ross? You know the Ross' were the Hereditary Priests and Rulers the Red Priests from Apple Cross in Wester Ross before Clan Arias soon to be known as the Great Clan Ross moved to Easter Ross and reformed the Earldom of Ross from the ashes of the Mormaerdom of Ross with the last Mormaer of Ross (and Mormaer of a couple other places) the once Thane of Scotland turned Mad King Macbeth! Give you a little hint, we didn't originate in Apple Cross, Clan Arias was Egyptian. Imagine going to a place in America but avoiding saying the State because you disfavor the people who bare its name and once ruled it. A deep seeded hate for sure. So why go to Wester Ross, why go to a place named Munro (Munro means Mont Ross) and proclaim the places Beauty, but refuse to say where you are for the overall name it bares and who it's bared by. You can't pretend Ross' can't see it, here in America they have our Feats marked down as firm US History but will leave our names out, unless one reads the expanded version. If you go to Ross, say I went to Ross, say you went to Wester Ross, or Ross County, or Ross-shire, even technically still the Earldom of Ross the best Title Still up for Grabs with one would assume the Chief of Ross, Barron Ross of Ross (for short) is surely eyeing!

I dont understand why these guys from down south put the title 'the last wilderness in Scotland '. This area is wild theres no doubt but it's not the last. There are many areas up here both on the mainland and islands that are wilderness areas. I think the term was just used to sound more dramatic but doesn't actually do Scotland a service and I'm afraid and just isn't true. Have you been to all areas I doubt it if your stating this.Too much footage of equipment, maps and bothies. Gillies must have had a laugh ,honestly you really narrate this like shackleton to the pole - way too overly dramatic. Tbh the weather wasn't that bad and at that time of year we would consider to be reasonable. Sorry to sound critical but for some Scots it is a bit OTT pal.

by saying "the last wilderness", jamie was talking about the imprint of modern man - the bleekness of the highlands, and the rest of the country is a result of deforestation, which took place across the centuries and millenia. not scotland's sparse population in the north.
still beautiful though our country is, there's a sadness here too, as we stripped a lot of it bare a long time ago, killing our native trees and nearly every ecosystem with them. the untouched little islands in the video show us a delicate untouched balance of nature - it's not seen in many places anymore.
tiny scotland has been incredibly enginuitive and inventive, masters of engineering and industrialisation, at one time building the biggest ships and bridges the world had ever known. we can be proud of that, but unfortunately the permanent scars are left across our wildernesses.

Beautiful scenery. Would love to paddle in remote Scotland but am too old now. In younger days I experienced wilderness canoe tripping in Ontario and Quebec. To Jamie’s many viewers that have enjoyed this, I recommend Justin Barbour’s canoe trek across Labrador, 83 days 1700 kilometres, alone with his dog.

Great video, and as someone who's been visiting that very area for over 30yrs I know how much you have to respect the weather up there having gotten caught out in a small boat on Loch Maree once when in the space of 30 mins the loch turned from calm to nightmare rough as the strong winds turned to race down the length of the loch. 5hrs sat on the far side bank waiting for a lull.

This is such a beautiful film. Love the way you've captured the landscape and the terrain around you. That being said, there's no reason to over-dramatize this. At no point were you in danger of flipping, hitting "boulders", or in any way jeopardizing your health. Please share the beauty of this environment without making a scene about it for the sake of RUclips.
