A CANOE PERSPECTIVE || A paddling circuit in the Scottish Highlands with Martin Trahan
In May 2022, I travelled to Scotland with Canadian long-distance paddler Martin Trahan to paddle a small but formidable route. However, a series of tribulations made our expedition even more challenging. This film documents our journey whilst exploring the reasons why canoeing is more than just a form of recreation but a way of finding purpose, identity, and perspective in an ever-changing world.

THE GLEN BEYOND || A canoe journey into the heart of the SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS
Просмотров 35 тыс.2 года назад
In February 2022, the British Isles were hit by three consecutive storms, some of the strongest seen in decades. In the days before the storms arrived, we decided to change the plan for our canoeing expedition whilst we were already on our way to Scotland. Instead of paddling the exposed lochs along the west coast, we opted for a more sheltered location. A glen tucked away right in the heart of...
THE LAST WILDERNESS OF SCOTLAND || A canoe expedition into a remote corner of the SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS
Просмотров 1,2 млн3 года назад
At the start of 2020, my friend Ian Finch and I wanted to travel up to Scotland to paddle around some lochs for a few days. But after the year's events, we had to postpone our trip. After spending most of the year indoors, in late September we were finally able to embark on our journey, but now it needed to be so much more. This film documents our attempt at completing a circuit linking up a co...

    I love these videos but it's sad that few people are willing to attempt adventures like these with traditional wood/canvas canoes anymore. These rubber, fiberglass and plastic ones just don't have any of the majesty and beauty of the old wooden ones. I know Simon, Bloke in the Woods uses a cedar strip which are better but still not the same as the traditional construction method. You lose so much of the cinematography element by the boats themselves being kind of ugly and mundane. Bill Mason was the true legend, running rapids with wood and canvas canoes.

    Thanks, I enjoyed reminiscing on your great video. I spent a lot of time in Scotland many years ago, from the Western Highlands to the Cairngorm Plateau. I have lived in Western Canada for 19 years and it amuses me that Canadian friends think their is no wilderness in Britain. I can say that by far the most remote and challenging conditions I have been in were in Scotland. The only thing missing in Britain are the extreme low temperatures, alpha predators and the extreme distances.

    • @JamieBarnes
      @JamieBarnes 6 месяцев назад

      I’m pleased you’re enjoying them! It’s one of the last royalex versions they made. I’ve used a tuffstuff one as well, theres honestly not much difference in it to me. However, I don’t really do any white water paddling so maybe i’m not pushing it hard enough to see the differences.

      @@JamieBarnes I have a tuffstuff, TBH not as tuff as the name might imply, I find it quite fragile. Like you, I don't challenge it with rocky waters as I know it won't take the knocks well. However the weight is the main reason I bought it, the ability to load/unload solo from roof bars is crucial for me

    Great adventure, but lads, those hard shell canoes are pure shit. Time to get yourselves a quality inflatable that can take all kinds of rough water, Mine even keeps going in the waves when it has turned into a paddling pool. It's also very comfy to sit on, and easy to roll up, pack into a rucksack and carry on portages. Trust me, I've used mine in seas and lakes and rivers so rough it beggars belief how well it took it all.

    mate, I dont know how you do it, 4km across the shite Scottish bogs throw at you with a Canoe, I shit it walking, big time. Ended up thigh deep a few times in what looks like slightly wet ground, knowing damn well you are going in, but no choice to go in! I bet your mate from Canada doesnt come back!!! I also laughed, you brought too much camera gear, the only "long distance" canoe trip I did was down Loch Sheil, we loaded the two man kayak thing (like yours but must have been bigger) 2 x 24 cans of beer under each seat was the first thing in. Having never paddled before and hitting a headwind, I never had the muscles for this, we probably got about 3 hours paddling before we quit, found a nice wildcamp and stayed there for 3 days. Thankfully, the Scottish Gods were against us and decided that it would do a 180 on the wind and have it in our faces on the way back too. I say thankfully, because it taught me a very valuable lesson, take a motor.
