THE GLEN BEYOND || A canoe journey into the heart of the SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS

  • In February 2022, the British Isles were hit by three consecutive storms, some of the strongest seen in decades.
    In the days before the storms arrived, we decided to change the plan for our canoeing expedition whilst we were already on our way to Scotland. Instead of paddling the exposed lochs along the west coast, we opted for a more sheltered location. A glen tucked away right in the heart of the highlands. This film showcases the highlights of our journey. Read the full article written by Ian Finch here: www.sidetracke...

    • @lauren5185
      @lauren5185 2 года назад +1

      Also I have to add I'm really curious about the paddles I see you with! Is that a typical blade shape in Scotland? We don't see such a broad blade here very much, as most people use a longer narrower "ottertail" shape for flatwater tripping - and typically all one piece rather than these beautiful laminates. I've never heard very much about canoeing in Britain but fascinated by the similarities and differences. Your footage is so beautiful and well done.

    • @JamieBarnes
      @JamieBarnes  2 года назад +1

      Hi Lauren! I love my Nova craft canoe. I’m hoping to get over to Ontario some time soon, if I do I’ll certainly try and get a Nova Craft whilst i’m there. The paddles we use are by Bending Branches, they are from the USA. I have some narrower ottertail shaped paddles but I only tend to use them for very long distance journeys.
      Paddling here is not like it is in Canada, but we make the most of what we have! Glad you enjoyed the film!

    @Jaime • As others have said, beautiful cinematography. You also deserve kudos for your selection of music. Too often people merely select music that they like rather than considering whether it enhances the visuals. You have the talent to select music that compliments the visuals and your narration.
    I also liked the fact that you know when not to talk and to let the visuals speak. The editing and the shots of different elements of the weather had me both remembering the sting of sleet on my face and the breaths of incredibly clean air you only seem to get with that weather.
    As a spectator who enjoyed your trip and the memories it evoked, feel free to do more. You'll always have avid viewers. 👍

      Thank you so much for taking the time to write that response, Yvonne. I enjoy putting videos like this together, but It's messages like this that really give me the encouragement to share them with other people. Music is always one of the hardest things for me to find for these videos, but I'm pleased you liked the selection. As for your comment about the visuals, I've also believed in 'show, don't tell'.
      Thank you and all the best,

      I'm glad you think the same way! Many years ago, the terms were easily mixed up. I made the same mistake when I was young!

      I was back in the same spot just last week. A sky full of sunshine and no wind at all. The midges were no problem either. Had no camera with me this time, just needed to be there to enjoy it. All the best to you.

    Really enjoyed your short film, Jaime, you captured some amazing footage. What part of the Highlands did you canoe through, it is stunning?

    Enjoyed it very much, thank you!
    Can you tell me what app/site you use for the "map clips" at 0:30 that you insert in your timeline?

      Glad you enjoy them, Rick. I built those map segments from scratch using the 3D modelling software called Blender and utilising heightmap data from QGIS.

    Great filming and video but I still don't know where they were. Just vague references to the loch, river and and mountain.

      Glen Affric?

    • @JamieBarnes
      @JamieBarnes  Год назад +1

      @@colingreer853 For this film we, intentionally left the location anonymous. Although it's tucked out of the way, it's actually very accessible. We were worried that if this film had the views that our previous one did, it could lead to an influx of visitors that could undermine the work of the conservation projects in the glen.

      @@vlads. I’m glad you liked it! I made some maps for a film a couple of years back, but I wanted to try and improve on them. I started learning to use Blender which is what I made this new one in. I would have used more sequences throughout the film more, but the rendering times for those animations is painful. 😂

      @@JamieBarnes Blender is great, if you have a Nvidia gpu make sure you're using that to render, it makes it insanely quick.

    Damn the quality is crazy good Just sometimes the camera was a little shaky. Was that because of the wind or was that intendet? Nice adventure!

    • @JamieBarnes
      @JamieBarnes  2 года назад

      I’m glad you thought so! Everything was shot handheld, so there was no use of stabilisers or gimbals. I did some stabilisation in the editing process but sometime it doesn’t look so good, so often I just leave it as it was shot. Some of the shots towards the end was certainly affected by the wind!
