  • Loki is one of Marvel's all-time best characters, and accordingly, he has been adapted many times to many different media. In this video, I take a look at a few of these different Lokis, and ask how far each version succeeds as an adaptation - thinking about both Marvel's comic-book Loki, and the original Norse myths which ultimately inspired the character. I'm also announcing Earth's Mightiest Playlist - so tweet me @PillarGarbage or email me at p1llar0fgarbag3@gmail.com if you want to be involved!

Loki Laufeyson, known by adoption as Loki Odinson and by his title as the God of Mischief, is a fictional character portrayed by Tom Hiddleston in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) media franchise, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name and the Norse mythological god of the same name. Loki first appeared in Thor (2011) and has since become an important recurring figure of the MCU; following the original Loki's death in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), a variant of him from an alternate timeline is introduced in Avengers: Endgame (2019), diverging from the events of The Avengers (2012), headlining the television series Loki (2021) alongside Sylvie, a female variant of him who is his love interest. Loki, Prince of Asgard, Odinson, rightful heir of Jotunheim, and God of Mischief, is burdened with glorious purpose. His desire to be a king drives him to sow chaos in Asgard. In his lust for power, he extends his reach to Earth.

The issue with the Loki series is, though, that the show was pretty much taken from him as soon as Sylvie arrived. And the ending was twisted into a romance, instead. (Yes, I know the cast spoke about the references to Loki Agent of Asgard, but the Loki's in the comic series never tried to woo each other by singing, or sharing a blanket before they kissed. Multiple times on the lips. It was a simple hug and single kiss on the forehead.) They sent the wrong messages, and that twisted the story for me. I stopped making excuses for them then. I loved Loki Agent of Asgard. That was my favorite run. I'm so glad it's coming back.

EMH Loki was definitely the best version imo, I could go on for a while talking about how much of a great character he is!! He's my definitive Loki.
I'd love to see you do an Analysis on EMH Zemo, talk about the Skrulls, and EMH Black Panther. I feel like EMH Panther has been overshadowed lately because of the MCU T’Challa ( no disrespect to Chadwick intended ), but whilst I do love him in the MCU, I do feel like the MCU one is slightly overrated and EMH Black Panther is vastly better, I for one consider the EMH one to be the best and definitive version.

@@AzraelSoulHunter It kind of felt like for the MCU-version of Zemo they just took the character-concept they had for the main villain of Civil War and then slapped Zemo's name onto him simply to get a recognizable Avengers-villain in there.
The two characters are nothing even remotely alike (besides maybe the dead family if you look at Helmut specifically) and it kind of makes MCU-Zemo feel like a missed oppurtunity.

-pulls the strings of everything and everyone in season 1.
-becomes all father and is a literal danger to all 9 realms.
-looks like a goth rock star.
-goes one to one against thor and gets a lot of great hits many times.
-literally pwns most of the avengers, even the hulk so much that they had to upgrade themselves and bring in allies from other realms to fight.
    -breaks captain America's shield.

For MCU Loki, what he is depends on what role the writer fits him into: for Thor 1 and the Avengers movie he’s the classic trickster main villain, for Thor 2 and 3 he’s the anti-hero-esque character due to not being the main villain, for Infinity War he’s dead, and the Loki show he’s pretty much a protagonist and literally a different character.
Personally I like Loki’s earlier/more villainous comic depiction as a villain, especially im EMH where he is the shadowy, overarching antagonist of Season 1. Mostly because we see less of him, and also because personally I think Loki’s a overrated character. #Zemo’s the best Avengers Villain

See, this is a problem when you give villain a pretty face and have women judge his character. Reminder, Loki has killed Asgardian warriors in the beginning of the first Thor just for his scheme, let the Frost Giants into Asgard and had them killed, too, then tried to kill his own brother and his friends, and he would've had Thor not regain his power, and then he tried to commit a planetary-sized genocide two times, and has more than likely killed women and children during the debacle in New York. He's an irredeemable character from every front, and the MCU has failed completely to reflect upon that and instead pretend he's now a good guy. No, he is not. Thor Ragnarok was supposed to be his return to his genocidal villain form, that's why that crap second movie had that twist ending. But, you know, Thor Ragnarok was more like Ragnajoke.

The thing about Mythological Loki that needs to be kept in mind is that his story has been changed by people with differing agenders. Most of the more villainious Loki stories tend to come from Christain scholars whom would cast him into a more Satan like role. Whereas a lot of his pre-Chirstain myths portray him as a more chaotic good character, even if he's a bit of a dick.

I think you need to rewatch Thor 1. Because you've actually gotten a lot of the details wrong in regards to Loki in that film.
Because you've said several things that didn't happen. There's a very clear sequence of events that go by. Not that Loki's scheme in the film isn't worthy of a Classic Loki title. It is. But that there are parts that you award him that don't fit.
He's not so much malicious as he going under a psycotic breakdown. He's not so much usurping the throne as he is given the throne much to his own surprise. His killing of the Frost Giants King and then attempted genocide of them all wasn't about consildating power but about gaining his father's favour.
You can even notice where his schemes actually fail in the movie. He warns a guard to tell Odin of Thor's plans to go to Joutenheim. But while he attempts to stall Heimdall with talk, his brother cuts past this. It's a moment where the other character's even comment on "his silver tongue turning to lead."
I'd actually say that Loki in the first Thor film shifts much closer to a fusion of his classical counterpart, much like EMH does, but also with a large fusion of his Kid Loki counterpart from that at the time comics. Something that the actor is noted to have read and liked. If you search letters pages in that run of Journey into Mystery Tom Hiddleston's name is even there.
Loki in Thor 1 is more... a fall into madness than he is malicious villain.

    • @PillarofGarbage
      @PillarofGarbage  2 года назад +11

You raise a lot of good points here, but I think you’re slightly mischaracterising what I said.
First, I don’t argue that Thor 1 Loki is wholly malicious, or a direct parallel to classic Loki - I say that MCU Loki started out with a disposition closer to classic Loki and EMH Loki than MCU Loki has in 2022. Personally, I think that’s a fair characterisation to make for Loki in Thor 1, and I think his role in Avengers only makes such a statement more accurate.
I don’t think there’s a great deal of evidence to support the idea that Loki’s actions in Thor 1 are born of a mental breakdown rather than malice.
I believe it’s ambiguous in the film whether Loki attempted to induce the Odinsleep on purpose. My interpretation has always been that, yes, this was the plan - by encouraging Thor to attack Jotunheim, Loki was killing two birds with one stone - attempting to get Thor out of the picture while simultaneously taxing Odin, inducing a sudden Odinsleep, leaving Loki the sole candidate for regency in the interim. From there, the plan is to stage the Frost Giant false flag, and demonstrate his worth to the kingdom.
In Loki’s speech to Thor on Bifrost, he admits his goal with the Frost Giant killing was to become seen as the true heir of Asgard, over Thor. That fits with my reading - and it seems the obvious next move for Loki from a rhetorical point of view would be to spin the Frost Giant attack as a direct result of Thor’s attack on Jotunheim. Thor is defamed and Loki is beloved - so even after Odin wakes up, Loki is better positioned to succeed him.
Some of the above rests on an ambiguous point, however - it may be entirely coincidental that Odin fell into the sleep after Thor’s banishment, and Loki may have been acting as regent without malice of forethought. Either way, he conspires to extend Thor’s exile, and - again - to show Asgard that he deserved to be the favoured heir. That’s still an attempt to usurp power - albeit slightly less directly. In your comment, you draw a distinction between Loki attempting to usurp power and Loki attempting to gain Odin’s favour, but surely the two goals are one and the same?
You’re also forgetting the Destroyer, and the way Loki attempts to use it to kill Thor, and thus further cement his new position as favoured heir/regent.

    • @deterlanglytone
      @deterlanglytone 2 года назад +7

@@PillarofGarbage So sorry, long reply .
He litterally yelled at Thor that he never wanted the throne after that, he only wanted to be considered Thor's equal. You can't get more direct than that part. He also makes no claim about being made but "worthy son" then says "true heir to the throne."
When you look at the scenes with a keen eye, there's a very different motivation for Loki in the earlier scenes than for the later. Thor is shown to have spend a lot sentence against breaking and killing Frost Giants in the film, the film even opens with his claim "when I'm King, I'll the monsters down and kill them all."
It happens that he's one of those monsters. He certainly belives they are monsters, he knows that he is one of them. And Loki knows what Thor thinks of them. So keeping Thor away from Asgard while he proves himself becomes very important to his sense of self.
His first attempt to keep his brother away isn't the Destoyer, but lies. His most used tool. It's not till the Warrior 3+Sif go and get Thor up to usurp Loki that such a action happens.
Also Thor's banishment removes him off his titles, it removes from the line of succession. So he's not usurping the throne. Because that's actually just an attempted coup. Not that I want to jusfity his actions here, just that's a distinct different.
If he really wanted Thor to go to Jotunheim then his decision to attempt to clearly stall Heimdall, something the film points out to us by the comments about "his silver tongue turned to lead.". So I'd admit to believing him when Loki says he never thought Thor would be banished.
And from a very simple examination of the scene where Odin falls into his famous Odinnaps. Its very clear that it's as much as surprise to Loki, who was much more interested in ranting at Odin than purposely causing the Odinsleep. Which would also require him to have known he was a Jotun prior to the movie if it was part of a plan.
And which the film goes through a very large effort to get us to believe in the trauma Loki is experiencing at the discovery of being a Frost Giant is real. He hadn't known this.
His reaction to being handed the throne by Frigga is awe, surprise and... a bit of terror. I'll agree that he does try and keep it, but the set up of events here are obvious that he only wanted Thor's acension stopped rather than securing his own.
And then he's told to "make him proud." Loki repeats those words at the end of the film to Odin. He just was trying to make him proud. If Loki wasn't undergoing a mental breakdown of sorts then this logic breaks a lot of the plot. You don't prove yourself by genocide when you get your brother banished for a mere attack.
On the mental breakdown note, its very easy to follow through. Loki's entire desperate bid to prove himself is more to do with his own internalised racism against Jotun, you can see that in how he talks about Jotun and himself as monsters, than it does with his prior scheme of stopping Thor from being crowned.
The fact that he's Jotun, upsets Loki so much that he's screaming, he's ranting. He's crying about how he's "a monster that people tell their children about."
To me, it is very obvious that the plan to kill Laufey is an attempt to distance himself from the species, created after his true nature is revealed to him. His plan to genocide them is a final move done in attempt to further distance himself from after Thor reveals his lies. This is not a good plan to gain approval, going aginst how smooth and smart he was in the start of the film, since if Odin wanted them dead, he could'v done so himself in the last thousand or so years.
Implying a loss in his rational thought.
After having that fail, he begs for understanding with his father "I could've done it, for you... for all of us." The "No, Loki." breaks him. And then Loki attempts to off himself.
Ya can't say someone committing suicide by jumping into the void of space is in a good mental headspace.
Now, you could claim that Loki wasn't trying to kill himself, because he shows up in the end credits, he could've just survived mind but also that scene countradicts Avengers, because in the end credits he's already controlling the doctor Selvig... who he then mind controls again.
And he's not possessing Selvig, because the Loki series makes it clear Loki doesn't know how to do that.
So I'm not sure that scene ends up... like being canon at all? It's a weird scene in hindsight. But one that doesn't contradict a suicide attempt. This is without going into real life studies how finding out that your adopted late into ones live is terrible for one's mental health, and without truly going to how much learning that he's jotun, a race he's racist against, would also hurt his self worth.

@@PillarofGarbage Loki's actions in letting the Frost Giants in though are very clearly not to get Thor banished. He's obviously thrown off when Thor says they should go to Jotunheim, as if he was expecting Thor to just argue with Odin instead. He also then warns a guard of what's happening and tries to delay them at Heimdall. Then finally, when on Jotunheim he tells Thor they should turn back (which gets him the "Know your place, brother" response) and accepts Laufey's offer to just leave before they start a war. He also tries interrupting Odin when Odin's going off on Thor and looks absolutely horrified when Thor is banished. Kid Loki was not even a thing yet when they were making those movies. The current comics of that time were still Straczynski run and the Siege event, where Loki was the diabolical villain. Also, MCU Loki is an irredeemable sociopath, and every movie past Thor The Dull World has failed by not reflecting upon that and pretending that he can be a good guy. I know it's easy to like him when you imagine his actions, direct or indirect, has only led to the deaths of adult males (Asgardian warriors, Frost Giants, SHIELD agents, etc), but consider that during his temper tantrum in NY he has killed women and children (which we can see on the memorial wall at the end of the movie), it's harder to see him as anything but someone who deserves a death penalty.

But he has a jealous streak underpinning all of this, and when he kills Baldur, he snaps and begins to hate the Aesir.

An important thing to note regarding Loki's mythological inconsistencies is that the written sources we have basically amount to post-Christian retcons of Norse myths. Loki was made more evil in some versions of stories to fill in the role of the devil, which the norse gods didn't really have. For example, in some versions killing Baldr was a prank gone wrong, and in others it was premeditated murder which had to happen for his post-Ragnarök resurrection.

8:40 Eeeehhhh, it way a waaaaay more complicated situation than “Loki killed Baldur”
A popular interpretation is that Baldurs death is actually a ploy by Odin. 👀
now, Odin received a lot and i mean a lot of human sacrifices in mythology. He’s died plenty of times to gain more and more ancient knowledge. Baldurs death holds unusual similarities to other stories of sacrifice to Odin.
For example, there’s this one story about a king named Vikar whos skip is marooned as Odin demanded a blood sacrifice. His counselor devises a plan to fake the sacrifice with a soft noose and a stick, but as they perform it Odin morphs the items into a tough noose and a spear.
It has a similar vibe to how Baldur, a norse god, somehow got killed by a harmless branch of mistletoe, a sort of “tricksy” sacrifice to Odin. And Baldur doesn’t stay dead, he comes back after Ragnarok and Odin knows this because he knows how Ragnarok is gonna play out. His death resembles sacrifices to Odin and he eventually comes back even better, similarly to how Odin did whenever he killed himself. We also never know what he whispered into the ear of Baldur’s corpse but why would he whisper in the ear of a corpse at all?
this gives Loki an even more unclesr and unusual role, along with his relationship to Odin. Sometimes they’re described as blood brothers but other times Loki is described as an extension of Odin, a small branch god with a weird role. I mean they’re both cunning tricksters. Yes this is only an interpretation but it paints a much more nuanced picture, he causes a lot of trouble but casual god murder is a bit outside of his normal wheelhouse
and yeah he’s against the gods during Ragnarok but..Snorri may have wanted to paint Ragnarok as a good thing. The gods are flawed, fallible, despicable and the biggest assholes around, the world had to be burnt away to kill them all so a new dawn can rise, one not ruled by a bunch of manbabies

He can be a huge duce bag and also a thoughtful person who cares about his family.
He can be intimidating and scary and a charming prankster.
    He feeds off Chao
He can be male or female and brake gender norms.
He's not a black and white Character.

Like you said Loki is unknowable. He's a contradiction. This insight is on point. You can't give a Shapeshifter an identity. A Shapeshifter is not supposed to have an identity or a category. That would defeat the purpose of him being a Shapeshifter. It would even be folly to call a Shapeshifter a trickster or a God of chaos. A Shapeshifter would have to be both order and chaos at the same time.

Well we know from the norse myth the frost Giants weren't frost giants from the original myth. They were able to shape-shift. Also hela the goddess of death is lokis daughter.

She's also canonically his daughter in the comics and, I think, EMH. I believe only the films make Hel a sister.

The interesting thing about Loki in myth is that he reads like the spy master of Asgard. I always interoperate his story as a cautionary tale. Don't abuse the person who pulls you out of the fire.

Your mythology loki study is a bit poor.
One of the most comfortable place to start from is OSP video about Loki.
For example the "Wait what. Is he Jesus, Snori? What did you warp to make myths more christian to save the remains of the myths!?" question.

MCU Loki is an absolute disgrace after Thor The Dull World. The movie sucked (much like every Thor movie after as well as his show), but one smart thing it did is have Loki pretend to be a good guy and have a heroic death, only then to reveal it was all BS and in reality he's back to his genocidal tyrant self. That was one good thing they did, and it made perfect sense to lead with that toward Ragnarok, where in the comics, like in the myths, he's the ultimate villain. Instead, we got this wishy-washy BS about him being a goofy-ass anti-hero who functions as some third wheel of the story. No, he can't be redeemed and can't be good. He had innocent people killed, tried to murder his own family, and tried to commit genocide two times. I know female MCU fans like to pretend Loki is just a misunderstood poor boy who was badly raised, but for once think with your head instead of your p-word and see that objectively this character deserves nothing less than execution by beheading. He's a child killer, in case you missed that part in The Avengers where we see a memorial dedicated to the victims of Loki's attack on NY and you can see women and children's photos there. And now because of the MCU popularity we have CB Loki be also a good guy, which is ridiculous. Anyone who knows CB Loki, knows that he's an irredeemable dipshit. That's how he always was.
