Shoes off sign: “Ooh i hate that in peoples house, i think it is so unfriendly.” Yeah, like treading muddy shoes on their light brown carpet is so much friendlier?! What’s with this woman?!
I don't understand why the opinions are always THAT strong when this comes ul
I hate wearing shoes in peoples houses. It's rude and makes the house dirty as hell.
Agreed that pissed me off. Taming off your shoes when you enter a house should be the norm.
As if someone with muddy shoes will ever enter HIS house 😂
And purchasing a dog that matches his carpet doesn’t bother you? Seriously, wtf.
I love how this show demonstrates that all your fancy possessions are going to look cheesy and outdated 10 years later. Unless you’re maybe buying vintage Bentleys and classic Chanel bags 😂😂😂
I don't think we will have that issue for the 2010s as people smartened up. But the 2000s fashion sense was cringe
Coco Pops I kinda agree but very trendy things and electronics will definitely not last a lifetime but that credit card debt is gonna stay for a while 🤷🏼♀️
So true
Yep. The more 'trendy' you are, the more cringy you look 10 years down the line. Just stick to the classics.
yeah=D that's why I go for classic perfume =D
I watch this show so I can feel one hundred percent better about my financial choices in life
Same
Why are they being so nasty about his home? There’s nothing wrong with it.
they don't understand minimalism I guess?
The psychologist in this program always seems to decide what the persons problem is and then convince them he is right rather than listening.
Not sure he’s actually a licensed psychologist but you’re absolutely right! He goes into it with a lot of assumptions and forces them to accept it. His monotone and lack of facial expressions is also very offputting. Sometimes people cry in front of him and he just looks cold and annoyed
@@Joshifying Notice that the narrator says "psychological coach". Almost certainly unqualified. Sometimes he can be far too direct - as in when a poor girl was very recently bereaved in another episode....
@@Alicettem he is definitely not a qualified psychologist. At the start of the 25k debt video (Ruda) he's referred to as someone who went through therapy and uses that experience to "help" others and during the episode with Drè he's referred to as a self help book author and entrepreneur. His website lists no qualifications or places of study. He's a very mouthy, opinionated arse with nothing professional to back up his opinions. Personally, I wouldn't take therapy from anyone who had ever needed therapy themselves without knowing their full story because who knows how mentally balanced they are? There's just something off about him that I can't quite put my finger on. He creeps me out tbh
@@CraftyWitch1990 I totally agree with the first part of your comment.. As for the last part that tends towards stigmatization.. It will be difficult to find a psychologist who has not experienced anything himself, after all they are just people aren’t they?
Literally every psychologist really
feeling not good enough is so often the root cause of most unhealthy behaviours....
This is from like 15/20 years ago - Very good wage. If he kept that property hes laughing now.
I’d say more like 2008,2009 just based on the interior of his home, the fashion, the camera quality, etc. But you have a decent point mate, he’d be minted if he hasn’t spent it all by now 😂
It was 2006, and now I'm Blonde, debt free, mortgage free, bigger 6 bedroom house and married... to guess who! 😂
@@matthewvokes7025 I am so happy for you!! ❤
Thanks Disastrid! Still debt free, have been ever since! x
@@matthewvokes7025who you married toooo?? Your best friend or the guy in the show?
Shoes off is normal!
not unless you are japanese
@@isabelfonseca3982 it's normal in most European countries, too. Especially if you're visiting someone else's home, anything else is just very rude and inconsiderate
Normal in Canada
Normal in the North in UK
Yup! Normal in Canada and other parts of the world.
I take off my shoes in someone else's home, you don't always know what you've stepped in and you don't want to be inconsiderate carrying that into someone else's house in which you don't live or do the cleaning in. How rude of her.
I come from a culture where you MUST take your shoes off before entering people’s homes. So I can relate to him.
I hope he kept up the payments - and the best thing you heard him say was that his parents offered the £20k (and that would have been so easy to take) but he wanted to sort it himself
2700 a month back then was a huge salary and in today's money would be more. He had a good job and it's probably why his debt is bigger than usual. Most people earn and then spend more.
You're right. When you are earning well you have a silly idea that you can buy anything you want and can fail to keep tabs on the reality.
£2700 a month is still a substantial amount of money to earn even now.
This is going to be the hardest person to help. He doesn’t want to stop spending or open up.
I think he is doing fine now. Debt free.
Men are always the most difficult...
Seems like he was afraid to cry on tv. That’s why he was reluctant to open up. Many people have that problem. It’s almost like a fear to cry in front of people. I myself used to think it was a sign of ‘weakness’ to show emotion therefore I always kept my feelings bottled up and would just never talk about my life
He is trying to buy happiness. Deep down he is looking to fill a hole in himself. All about appearances because he has little sense of self and self-esteem issues. I was the exact same way when I racked up $20k of CC debt 💸 . Now I have $7200 left and I’ll be done! I’ve gotten my act together and I hope he’s doing better now too.
I love how "Cold Turkey" includes allowing other people to still support the behavior. It's like saying I quit smoking cold turkey, while you bum cigarettes off of friends.
Ahhh those years when your gay relationship had to be portraid as a "best friend" for the public...
I don't agree. He may be gay but I think his friend who rents part of the house is just that, a friend. This wasn't made so long ago that being gay was taboo. I've seen lots of these episodes and there are many that are open about the person being gay.
@@carriedudley8593 Yeah. This was filmed years after Queer as Folk was aired on national television too.
@carriedudley8593 your guess is wrong. Matthew made a comment in this comment section that said he's now married "to guess who."
I really hope that the psychologist takes time to speak with the person at least somewhat off camera. Obviously coming on a tv show such as this means you’ll have to share something, but a lot of people have real issues that they don’t want the whole world to see, let alone on a tv show. I know that I have issues I need to deal with, but I don’t think I’d want to air all of them on tv.
polishedperidot
tv is devilish behind the scenes. not just because your deepest secrets and insecurities that are unraveled for anyone to see. i recommend never go on one. even better not consuming it (but here i am...)
I have landed myself in credit card debt and dug myself back out. But i have never understood buying things for the sake of buying things, even if it means buying duplicates of things 🤷🏻♀️
I cant even get a credit card😥
00’s fashion and hair styles were really really bad! I can’t stomach to look at pics with me in from back then 🤢
I know; my thin eyebrows 🤣
I knew a girl.in school growing up who couldn't afford the luxury clothes she bought. She returned them.every time
One day, she got thrown out of the store
This guy pulls out credit cards like a deck of Pokémon cards.
I really enjoyed the approached used to assist Matthew in his spending. There was more of an effort used and it worked!
The worst fear is the most rare beautiful thing he has...his ginger hair. Sometimes in school kids suffer trauma just because of the bullying.
Excuse me while I google Whitney Houston's teeth
I like that gentle approach from the psychologist. He is so kind with his words.
In my opinion, asking him to hold the sign about his hair colour was making fun of him. Let’s make fun of the guy who was bullied as a child. For our own enjoyment
Those eyebrows, the foundation and the thick and too white teeth. I knew immediately something was the matter with his self-image and self-confidence. He seems stubborn, but it's stubborness out of fear. He should start loving himself. Look for a good therapist too.
Poor silly boy, anybody can see he'd still be handsome without his make up. I'm the last person who would criticise a man in makeup but if it's draining his cash he needs to try to live without it.
his eyebrows have been plucked to death.
He looks plastic...
They’re to reddish
And they don't match, he spends too much to look so bad
That’s the 1990’s for you
@@sounsure9108 this was 2005 but your point is valid :)
“Haven’t done anything this week” um….besides the three day paid for vacation????
The music though! Such a flashback of night club bangers and long gone shops like MK One, Etam/Tammy, International, Jane Norman, Morgan ect...
He can return some of those clothes that still have tags on them like people on other episodes have done. He could also have a garage sale to sell some of the used items he doesn't need. Finally, get a second job for a little while to help tackle some of that debt. That's what Dave Ramsey would tell him to do.
He can only return them within a certain time period, unless they're faulty.
His ginger hair color actually look good . I think he should be proud of it
Ah the Egg card! The good ole days of getting money at the click of a mouse that didn't belong to you and you'd never pay it back! It's in every single of those Spendaholics episode.
@@ejane2112 It was a credit card in the UK back in the mid-late 00s.
I could happily live on his wage...
His wage is like just above 20k after taxes. His home was cheap too. Must be worth a lot today.
This was 15 years ago too!
Wonder how he’s doing now?
I definitely could.
Deadass
30:00 just reach through the bar 😂😂
How is taking your shoes off in somebody else’s house considered “unfriendly?”
Also, how old is this for the main guy to say “oh it’s some sort of online auction website” when it’s eBay. 😆
Maybe they can't say the name of the website? In the other episodes I've seen, they always say "online auction site" when referring to eBay.
This was made in 2005 mguy
It's a BBC programme. In those days, they were not allowed to advertise/promote any companies. That's relaxed a bit now.
Wow Jay was so mean to him
But isn't he getting rent from the two lodgers? Why wasn't that factored in to his budget?
His house looks great! I like his place
Not even spending his OWN money smh
He is a very expensive friendship.
Why would an ordinary pedestrian bloke think he's worthy and capable of managing such accoutrements in the first place. He wreaks of insecurities and self doubt!!
Love this series
That LV luggage is beautiful 🤩
According to the Inflation calculator, his 2700£ salary in 2020 comprises 3645£, that is 4047€. The one could easily live, rent and put money away.
Especially as he doesn't live in London.
I WISHHH I could put money away 😑😤 he has it good
Could easily max out stocks and shares isa £20k a year and have plenty of money left over
I understand in what this handsome guy had passed, because me too had passed from a situation like him. When I was a child my hair was blonde and than the older I got it came dark brown but i like it and when the white was coming out I started to dye my hair but I got fed up every four weeks to go to the hairdresser and I decided to like to live it salt and pepper and imagine the tongue of the people around me made me so sad with titles that said to me. But afterword's I ignored everyone and I'm happy with my hair as it is. Salt and Pepper and other thing you need to do is to be STRONG.
He had beautiful colour hair - I really dont understand ginger hate.
I know. I would love having red hair!
What I’ve learnt from binge watching this show is that gay men need to look fabulous
Fairy Mary He’s wearing a ring on “that” finger. Is he married? Perhaps his partner can help bail him out of this mess.
I couldn’t keep up. I gave up being fabulous in my twenties.
The men on this show... sure. But not me nor any of my gay friends. I do like dressing nice, but understated. I buy everything from charity shops, I don't own any regular clothes that cost more than £10, and could wear all my clothes in a fortnight.
@@BrendaBaBoom His "best friend" Richard is definitely his boyfriend.
Women and gay men are under the same pressures
The phycologist part of this show is awful. 😂😂
idk why people hate the bus so much, i always romanticise travelling by bus and its cheaper than the tube
well said, i love travellin by bus
He needs a curated wardrobe and a curated skincare regimen. He has too much of both. He just needs to narrow it down to the essentials.
I happen to think red hair is strikingly beautiful in its uniqueness!!
My role model's Merida!
I agree. I've always liked different shades of natural red hair.
Yes!!! Never understood the shaming and hate.
That Fergie song sent me back to the 2000s.
I loved that Fergie CD. It was great.
at 24:36+ he actually looks like a normal person...without all the weird makeup and hair.
Was this before the 08 crisis lol. As someone his age today its funny to see this attitude to money
Filmed in 2005.
And how willing credit card 💳 companies were draw you in and have you spending money you never had!
I think that the "ginger" thing with Benjamin was unnecessary. Why not try to get him to embrace it using better terms? Why could he not have had a sign declaring that he is s natural redhead or some such. I feel that was deliberate needling just to get viewing figures up.
I thought it was a dirty trick, but it worked
Benajmin went too far with the ginger hair sign - if Matthew had punched him it would have been deserved
I'd hate to see her carpets if people are allowed to walk in her home with their shoes on.. let's hope none of her visitors ever step in dog mess before walking in her house 🤣
Paulette maybe she has wood floors - equally, you must still remove them.
Yeah the floors would look like... floors (gasp)
I think it's more the idea of telling your guests what they are and aren't allowed to do in your house...like if they are polite they will take off their shoes anyway. Your guests should be appreciated, they don't *have* to be there, it's not a classroom...so it's kind of weird and self-important to have signs telling guests what to do in your house.
@@vanderbam2741 exactly as you say - they don't have to be there. My house, my rules. Don't like them? Don't visit me. I don't want outside dirt on my floors anymore than i want someone to smoke in my home. Would i be in the wrong for asking them to smoke outside or refrain from smoking when they visit my home?
@@CraftyWitch1990 no, obviously not, but you probably don't have a sign at the front door saying "Do not smoke in my house". Nor "Do not pee on my floor", "Don't steal my things" etc. It's rude honestly. If a guest overlooks removing their shoes, surely they can be politely asked with a smile?
Best shock therapy I’ve seen on this show
I got the impression they were a bit too harsh on this young man.
How the fuck can you work in finance and continuously make terrible financial choices in your own life? I am actually terrified for his clients who are given financial advice from this man!
I just can’t with some people.
Can't what?
Both my boys are red heads ,it’s not ever held them back .
Yes sure they got teased .but the worse was from adults !.
Luckily they had a mother who soon ripped these stupid ppl apart.
I find it disturbing that one never sees people buying books or having books in their homes ... do they just watch the telly? It raises your blood pressure ... decades ago I worked in a bank & saw how credit cards (which no doubt are good to have in case of emergency) are used for standard life things ...
Everyone uses credit cards for almost every purchase, but the main reasons are convenience and rewards points. These days, it's seen as inconsiderate if someone in line uses cash or check to pay for a purchase, because it holds up the line. Also, I get 1.5% cash back on my card puchases. I average $3k/mo ($36k/ann) in credit card purchases, which gives me $540 in cash each year (which I use to pay for birthday gifts for friends and family all year).
And as for books, agreed that back in 2005 when this aired you'd think you'd see more books. However, beginning 2008, most of us switched to buying a kindle and kindle books. It was a lifesaver when I was injured in a car accident and had a hard time holding up a book in bed. I own hundreds of books and can read them wherever I am using my Kindle app.
Of course shoes off! You walked into house not a pig's shed!
Did they use the entire soundtrack from Garden State?
He looks like the mom if zack and Cody
Of*
OMG HE DOES!
Omgggg Carrie I think
Y'all know the store called buckle? Yeah
"friends riiiightttt"
I don't like the way she was talking to Matthew - 'how thick is that?' ' biggest spending moron' 'idiocy'. He definitely has made baaad choices but she was really demeaning.
The beginning of the end ...
How many times did Matthew have to tell Benjamin he didn't feel comfortable with the challenge? I think Benjamin was being too aggressive.
Its easy to buy with plastic, very hard to pay it back. Stupid to exceed what you can afford to pay back. If he is not careful he is going to end up with nothing, and still up to his eyeballs in debt
Did he actually say that he got the dog because it matches the carpet?! Hope it's a joke...
I think he was kidding, in a way of distancing himself from his obsession.
Such a cute... and absolutely crazy guy) If he has such a crazy debt, he's worth less than nothing...
Ирина Рубин what
His hairstyle😂
my dude makes 2,7k a month and still manages to be in debt? and people say the poor are bad with money
He can go to bed at night and go to sleep, because there’s nothing else he wants to do yet. As soon as he decides, he wants another goal or something that will cost money is when he will take notice right now he’s got nothing better to do according to how he frames it.
Well Whitney Houston's teeth won't be looking so good now.
This could help ppl that actually want to be helped, could let him lose his house, his parents will buy another one. Mother and son cant talk.
Matthew is clearly loitering within tent!
How long ago was this? Looks like at least 15 years ago
2004?
So this psychologist never studied….hmmm. But, he wrote a book. I kinda shows. Good way to save money on the shows budget I guess.
First time I’ve ever seen this show and it makes me want to start drinking and smoking again 🥳
Love Nina's haircut. 🥰
He's in Finance but didn't think to transfer his high-rate debt to low-rate debt? I wonder what kind of Finance. Or if it's a different function (such as Marketing) but in the Finance/Banking indusrty.
When they say average debt do they include the mortgage?
Vanity at the extreme!
1:07 did anyone else think that was Simon from the inbettweeners?
Yes! Thank you! 😂
It's rude when people don't take their shoes off! Don't these people know all day long there waliking around all day on dirt, spit, shit and many more disgusting stuff.
This is a time when you ask for help
I don’t think there is a deep family/past psychological issue. I feel the psychologist is making up a reason for the show. It’s really annoying.
He has just got addicted to the endorphins of buying.
Which can then soothe any past hurts
Who thinks that Stephen sort of looks like Matt Lucas?
Matt is a bit spoiled in a way...
I have just googled him hes on twitter...

Nomadic Crier he has a Twitter post from 2016 that I found on Google where he says he’s out of debt and thanking a financial whiz for his help 😊
I’ve lived in Dallas, Texas all of my 36 years and no one has ever asked me to take off my shoes. 🤷♀️
R F I’m from southern California and have been TOLD to take off my shoes. I’m of the opinion that’s what VACUUM and floor cleaners are for...It’s annoying.
Growing up we always took our shoes off. Especially in my house. My father was military. He didn’t play. 😹😹

Brenda BaBoom It’s easier to get rid of dirt than smells 🤢. I really don’t want anyone barefoot 🦶 in my house. Keep the shoes on. Vacuuming is easier than trying to get rid of smells and sweat.

Back in 2005 when this was filmed, getting credit was way easier than it is now. After the recession hit in 2008, the lenders really cracked down on criteria so it's much harder now. He had a good job though that paid more than most jobs do even now in 2021
