- Season 4 Episode 5:
Psychological coach Benjamin Fry and lifestyle expert Jay Hunt help 27-year-old Miriam Isherwood with the serious shopping addiction that's landed her in debt to the tune of 36,000 pounds. While Jay takes her entire clothing collection and sets up a shop, Benjamin gets to the bottom of Miriam's constant thrill-seeking.
Can Jay Hunt and Benjamin Fry cure this shopaholic?
#Spendaholics
Jay Hunt and Benjamin Fry use shock tactics to confront .... with ... overspending, but can ... commit to going cold turkey for 7 days?
Spendaholics is a British TV series where the Spendaholics team tame out-of-control spenders! Развлечения
‘In contrast to her family of high achievers she has a low income job and has been single for 7 years’ - ouch!
The shade is insane 😂😂😂
Woof
She should be a fashion buyer for other people - so she can get the thrill of shopping but spend other peoples money.
The cold turkey budget makes no sence, when friends are paying for lunch and drinks.
I've always thought that too. They aren't getting the full experience of living on a strict budget if friends/family are just paying for what they would normally have anyway
She seem like a sweet lady. Hope she finds balance in her life soon 🙂
Bank balance
I like this girl. She's down to earth, learned to be savvy super fast
I am thinking her sisters and father being high achievers might make her have a complex. Maybe she feels like the black sheep of the family and just spends to feel like she is something.
If her IQ isn't as high as the rest of her family, she should move to a less competitive area of Britain. Her parents gave her access to education: it is up to her to make something out of it.She is not a good singer. And she was not creative.
@Willem Chastity The term 'black sheep' does not mean a literal black person. It means you are the outcast of your family or the odd one out.
@@janicewolk357 Oh I definitely agree she should have been realistic about her limitations and made the best of what abilities she has.
A good point. Spending to fill a void with making things look good for her on the outside .
@@fleurgi omg, cant believe u have to explain what "black sheep" means, lol
I hope she had a nice job and life after this, they helped her a lot!

@@Estonian4life she seems to be doing well! a quick google search shows that she a store manager and really overcome the shopping/ debt situation.
The book "30 Days to Stop Being a Shopaholic" by Harper Daniels is helpful.
I’m slightly similar to where Miriam is here, depression does a number on you.
Still on my healing journey, and there were days when I’ve had a taste of what I’m capable of when depression goes away.
To many people like me and Miriam, we’re capable of so much. Always seek help and healing.
You should be very proud of yourself depression is like being trapped under a mountain so days that you can do only one thing definitely do one thing I don't care if it's dishes or even taking a shower I'm hoping that your journey turns out well I'm sure that it will you have great tenacity
When all her stuff was put in the shop she should have opened the doors and started selling!
❤
The "SHOCK" of where she'd be at 55 if she didn't rein in her spending habits was, I think, the best example the show has come up with for an example of excessive spending.
I can tell you that if someone had done that to me in my twenties or thirties, or even my forties, I would have saved a TON of money! Luckily I always managed to repay my massive debts in full without declaring bankruptcy, and without borrowing from friends and family. As dumb as it was, I was able to take a loan from my 401k, repaying myself at a much lower interest rate than those awful cards were charging.
Hope she was able to break free!
A good comment. I also feel that the Jay/Ben team could call in a doctor from time to time. Many of the spendaholics on this show have dreadful diets and alcohol addiction. The shock of being confronted with how your health will be in 10 years if you fritter away your money on fashion instead of buying fresh fruit and veg, would be sobering - no pun intended. (Was she really going to drink a whole bottle of wine in one evening all by herself?).
@elizzy8754 I know his comment is 2 years old but I could quite easily drink a whole bottle of wine to myself 😂
@elizzy8754 1 bottle of wine in an evening is a light night for a Brit 😂 when I used to go out, a bottle of wine was just pregame while doing my hair and makeup and then I'd drink at least triple that over the course of the night too! British drinking culture is wayy different to most of the world. A lot of my friends across the pond were super shocked to realise that teenagers here start drinking around the age of 12 or 13 with their mates whilst a lot of Americans don't touch alcohol until they're like 17/18. Some even older than that. With parental consent, it's legal to drink from the age of 5 in the home here so I had my first drink when I was about 10 (a glass of wine with Christmas dinner). It's just not that big a deal here
@@CraftyWitch1990
I started drinking socially (pretty much partying with friends every weekend) at 16. That held true until I got pregnant with my daughter at 25, at which point I gave it up and became a responsible adult for my daughter. I didn't think I should continue on with my drunken ways when I had such a precious new life to take care of.
I just wish that it hadn't taken me sooooo many years to get my shopping habits under control, what a waste of money!!! 😪 It really was an addiction.
I adore watching these shows that portray life across the pond, it just reinforces how much I'd LOVE to visit💕
I'm so happy for her. She needed that job change so badly
Her laugh on the rollercoaster is beautiful :)
She is currently a manager at a store. She could do so much with her degree. I just think she needs the confidence to do it
Jesus Christ Ben! Surely that jacket was never in fashion!
Surely the travel card to get to work should be classed as essential.
She has a lovely personality and SO MUCH POTENTIAL.
I’m here so shocked at how cheap designer items were and now they are stupidly expensive lol
Benjamin does my head in. If he can't find a cause he will create one and put it in their heads. And his monotone voice OMG.. Shoot me
I think he's rather nice.
Raylz- Ben is only doing his job chill out
Not a fan of him either. He has no actual therapy qualifications either which is worrying. He just draws on his own experiences of going through therapy and the fact he wrote a self help book once. I wouldn't wanna take advice or therapy from someone who wasn't qualified anyway, that can do far more harm than good
Totally agree!
He’s also incredibly condescending and when people on the show have pets he always suggests they get rid!!!
Plus he tries to blame everything on childhood trauma 🙄
Parents should never loan money to their kids. They can gift it to to them, but as soon as you say it needs to be paid back it creates a completely different relationship that should not exist between parents and children.
Maria Tusken I agree.
Maria Tusken I agree! We personally have made this mistake with our grown child. Extremely exhausting.
It depends. I’m very responsible with my money, but I’d hope that my parents would lend to me if I ever needed it, and I’d want to pay them back, because I am self-sufficient
I beg to differ, I think legally adult children can make up for various ways parents stretch out to help out. Similarly if you're between housing an temporarly move in with parents for a couple of weeks, you should pay rent to your parents.
I loan my mum money 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️

My 'mother' is a little like Miriam with the living on the edge thing. She inherited almost $100,000 between 1985 and 1990. Bought a house with a $20,000 mortgage. When we sold it, the mortgage was $97,000 because she was constantly borrowing off it. She only had $45,000 for retirement - she worked full time until she was 75 but spent everything on her unemployed boyfriends.
She admitted she isn't comfortable having money. She prefers the excitement of trying to scrape together money for her mortgage and property taxes, rather than setting money aside and just paying it. Paying her property taxes was all drama - borrow off the life insurance, borrow from her aunt, pull money off the home equity and panic herself with the thought that she wouldn't get the money on time (she looooves to panic).
Obviously she is far more troubled than Miriam. Her search for excitement extended (until she had to stop driving) to picking up drunk, homeless hitchhikers thinking she had fallen in love and moving them into her house. Disastrous results every time, of course.
Oh my goodness. I have a family of sisters who also live this way. Full blast. Panic stations, drama relationships, forever chasing money and dodging debts with their hair on fire. If they have 10 dollars, they spend 35. Its exhausting
Thank you for sharing your story. Im so sorry that you and your family had to go through those experiences. I hope that your Mum is doing better now. She is lucky to have you. I wish you and your family love and happiness in the future.
Was she diagnosed with a personality disorder?
Ouch
@@railwaychristina3192my thoughts too. I hope she’s at rest now
"Bargains" add up. You're still spending money even though you've found great deals. It is very difficult for some of us to realize this :(
Man. I used to be so good with money when I was single. I HAD to be because I lived paycheck to paycheck even with two jobs because I HAD to save for the Sumner months when I was down to up to four part-time jobs. $25 was my weekly food and toiletries budget lol.
I want a where are they now episode.
Me too. Would like to know if she has followed through with what she wanted to do from the initial interview.
An update would be great, I agree.
i know I am quite randomly asking but does anyone know of a good site to stream new tv shows online ?
@Asher Aidan Lately I have been using Flixzone. Just search on google for it =)
@Roger Jesus Definitely, I've been using FlixZone for years myself :D
It's great how they did several experiments and gave her small lessons to improve her life. It seems so much more helpful and insightful compared to just interviews or analyzing her spending
I love this girls personality and she smiles the whole time ! I laughed too when she was singing in public and someone gave her a tip hahahah .. please do a follow up on her ! She has the best personality ever !!😜🤪🥳
This show is so vintage :) the Fendi is now back in style :)
She should put some of those jeans in the a consignment shop so she can bring some money in.....
Iworkwithnitwits it's worrying that none of these spendaholics have no savings, what would they do in an emergency? Racking up that much debt would stress me out beyond belief.
Her behaviour patterns could also suggest ADHD. Living on the edge, shopping addiction, high alcohol use, & leaving things til the last minute, can be a sign of low dopamine.
i believe it is ocd..
combined with other..
that’s the clue where they maybe should have taken a professional on board and not a hobby psychologist.. not being diagnosed properly is such an unnecessary burden
Thought of it too
Too many labels. She's immature, selfish and not very intelligent.
Every time she was going to buy something she should have thought of her parents loan and put it back.
It would be interesting to see what became of Miriam. She is obviously intelligent but has the habit of silly rebellion. Hopefully she left the job as a window dresser and had a chance to pursue a more rewarding and better paying career
rlp230 her Linked in profile says she is a vintage store manager but she is also singing and in a band so hopefully she is happy
@@1588chrissy that's great! She seems really nice. 😎
Funny how all these clothes just become dated tat after a few years.
I think that if it's something that's sort of timeless and can be reused for years, like a suit or a formal dress or whatever, then it's okay to spend a fair bit more. If it's fast fashion, spending a lot on following trends is rather unwise unless already wealthy.
You mean: after a few months.

She is doing good. And the host did help her out. So generous!
If you have enough time to shop you have enough time for your passion.
she doesn't have a passion. she has a fantasy.
i think "lazy" in a very intelligent person often means they are just bored and do not know "boredom" because there is always more to do so it feels very much like "not meeting your potential" (because you're not) and like you're being "lazy" (likely you are just so good in so many things you have no idea where to start). coming from such an intelligent family i am very sure she is even more intelligent than she comes across in this video and i would bet that is the problem she's up against. i hope she has resolved these issues at this time in her life! she is a beautiful woman, inside and out! it is also very difficult both to be extremely intelligent (in areas especially like law and the hard sciences) and simultaneously very creative. there is always kind of a "war of what i want" going on inside your head! i do hope she is doing better now!
she's average dealing with an exceptional family. That can be rough but it doesn't have to be. It's her choice.
An excellent and sympathetic analysis.
Idk why but she looks best in her graduation gown
Can’t people just resell stuff?? I buy clothes and only wear them a couple of times but sell them on vinted and depop. I know it was set a while ago but there was still the internet.
fiveelms2011 Why don’t you just buy shit and keep it? And wear it? And then you don’t need to buy more
Lemon Vermillion so you don’t buy clothes? Weird but to each their own x

Lemon Vermillion I like switching it up 🤷🏾♀️
@@angelsspirit154 I still buy occasionally from thrift stores and poshmark, but I also keep my clothes for years. I still have nice dresses I bought in consignment shops 15 years ago.
I don’t understand parents loaning money to fund or bail her out ,and she still owes over £30.000.
It's shameful. I have borrowed money and paid it all back to my parents. I never want to borrow any money again. The last people I want to take advantage of are my parents.
I think her white father feels guilty for the discrimination she must’ve experienced as a child in Britain. He knows she looks so different from him and his people, even though she’s his blood. But imagine the heartbreak he must’ve felt seeing his flesh and blood being discriminated against.
she could have have her own place and house to live in for 30.000. Rent her own house and have a car etc...
Lovely girl, to all the negative comments about her voice, she had beautiful elements to her voice, maybe nervous. I hope she is doing well in life now
Maybe that’s her voice, she seems confident enough ... I don’t think she’s nervous, her voice could just simply be deep.
I haven’t heard anyone say 9p noodles in years! 🤣
Dang, London used to be cheap AF.
Nothings wrong with this lifestyle if you can afford it without debt. Also, everythings wrong when you just bought them and never use it
I honeslty never understood buying clothes and literally never wearing any of it. When I buy something, I cannot wait to wear it and end up wearing it all the time for the first couple of weeks. I guess that is the difference between normaln shopping habits and a sort od a addiction
I feel guilty if I dont wear stuff
It's bc they're addicted to the feeling of shopping for stuff and not the stuff itself.
I wish they'd update us on how these people are doing, some "where are they now?" episodes.
£15000 as a deposit on a flat. Those were the days! We had to pay close that amount as a security deposit for the flat we are renting! Granted, we live in Switzerland, which is a country of renters, not buyers. Down payment here is minimum 20% of the price to get a mortgage.
That's a crazy amount! Here we just pay the first months rent in advance and usually the equivalent of a months rent as a security deposit. The flat I'm in now (i moved in 5 years ago) cost me £750 to move in and i get £375 back if/when i move out providing the property is in good condition and i didn't break anything or leave a mess etc
An investment banker sister and doctor sister is really heavy. Either way, she's really really underemployed. Those jobs are brain dead. She has a degree. She can do much more.
She’s so pretty and her laugh is delightful. Hope she got sorted out and is doing well.
She is so beautiful regardless of what she dress. They keep filming her lovely face and it's so pleasent to see. Hope she can control the shopping addiction because Miriam no need any special clouths...she is already special. Beautiful face, beatiful smile. ❤
That face and smile doesn't count for much. It's what's inside herself and what her emotional intelligence is.

There is more to it but I think a big part of her problem is she not living up to what she could be
We’re people really paying off mortgages in their early 50s before the housing market crash?? Ugh. At this rate my 5 year old will have to take over our mortgage when we die of old age lol

Wigs and weaves have really come a long way!
F me I can’t get over how much cheaper things were back then....a Fendi bag for £500? Get out of here!!!
I love watching all the tacky things these people buy
Shopping for cloth or stuff should not make you happy. Being yourself should make you happy. She has a law degree wow
That was very manipulative of him to convince her that she doesn't like to sing because she didn't want to sing a song she doesn't like. He should have let her choose whatever she wanted.to sing. Its like he deliberately set her up to feel awkward so he could say...see you don't really want to sing. Very crappy and gaslighty
I feel great! I feel terrified!
Aww..I wanna be her friend!
she rather starve than not being able to buy useless clothing
Savaged Pepe yes I agree. Miriam seems a really nice intelligent person but this is a classic example of people prioritising wants over needs. She doesn't need the £4 top but chooses to spend money on that instead of spending the £4 on having some nourishing meals for the week. I'd much rather buy the food to feel better than waste it on a top you don't need and probably won't wear a long time. You can't put a price on health.

Having been brought up with nothing had set me on a path to earn money, a little bit at a time. I saved. As I got to a stage In my life where I could spend & save I did. I still save but I can spent more now if I wish. No one other than my husband gave me anything, we were a great team. Unfortunately what can happen if you have a child that grows into a adult & you end up giving & spoiling & being there always always financially is a disaster. Though it’s appreciated (you hope) it can be taken for granted. We both felt that we often did it wrong. Helping your child is encouraging then to go out & earn & become independent, being there to bailout is the worst thing ever, tough love should be mandatory!

What comes out of this woman's mouth sends shivers down my spine. Her spending habits is out of control. What a relief that I don't care about designer brands. I buy cheap.
There's nothing wrong with Designer brands if you save up the money.
Funny that the deeper issues connected to racism that she experienced in her childhood, identity issues, etc. have not been identified. But how can they when the therapist and the other person are accustomed to dealing with certain types of clients. This woman has been uprooted and planted somewhere at a crucial age. Look at how life and the people she associates with. She literally has no Black friends, no sense of identity and roots. Poor thing. Hope she's managed to find her way back.
This. 👌🏾
Why does she have to have black friends? We don't choose our friends based on the colour of their skin.
She doesn't actually say she suffered from racism, she just says she felt out of place.
Her parents wanted the best education for her and her siblings. It doesn't seem to have affected them.
Why does it have to be about race?
I know she got the t~shirt in Penneys but they still all add up. I spend around €150 each time I go into Penneys
these prices make no sense to me. bottle of wine for £1.40? crazy
Wait...all this & she is renting a ROOM?!!
The book "30 Days to Stop Being a Shopaholic" by Harper Daniels is helpful.
She is afraid of being exposed emotionally ,especially with her singing which is pure fantasy and not her real passion. The therapist missed the issue of the relationship with her father ,who she feels entitled to get him to bail her out financially and enable her not to develop as an independent adult ,unlike her siblings who have successful careers.I think she has abandonment issues from her childhood ,with her father who obviously adopted her ,after leaving Nigeria age 5 .The issues of her feeling left out at a predominantly white school ,I am sure this included racial exclusion and other experiences which she does not want to explore ..instead she presents this facade of a giddy immature girl with a rich daddy to save her.I hope she finds herself and stop hiding behind her clothes and spending. The therapist was very superficial in this episode .
Brilliant theory!
Marci you should have been her therapist, yes he wasn't really getting to her real issues.
Her father had her with her black Nigerian mother. Where do you get she was adopted?
SHE IS NOT ADOPTED! Her father is her REAL FATHER and she does not have "Daddy Issues". Her father just enables her because she's the baby and is very immature. She has confident issues from the guilt she's felt from under achieving and living irresponsibly.
