...you're so right haha! ...but let's rather say excessive spending on stuff you really don't need is always waste...or in other words, spend a bit more money on long lasting products rather than spending it on "cheap" low-quality stuff you'll throw away in the next two or three years...
This lady is the embodiment of "spending the money you don't have to buy things you don't need to impress people you don't like". Glad she found the root problem.
I feel like they just buy off the rack designer when they could be spending money on private label at that price. Its more about acquiring the status from the clothes I think. Like I work as a tailor and I LOVE clothes xD but I could never shop like this lady. Agreed, people romanticize Y2K clothing now, but in reality it was awful 😂😂
Perhaps, because you know that you don't look great, you are always searching for something to wear that makes you feel more pretty? I always search for clothing in which you don't see how fat I am. But since everything looks awful on me when I'm in a shop, I don't buy it.
Doesn’t she spend most of the money on her little girl? This poor lady is so overweight that it would be very difficult for her to find fashionable and flattering clothes.
Same. I think I've had the same one for going on 15 years. Granted, I don't swim much, but if you have 14 swimsuits you're not wearing any one of them that often, either.
@@christinawells2024 I do the same. Actually now my kids only have 1. When on vacation after a swim in the pool I hang them up to dry for next days swim. Works out great.
My whole childhood i watched my mother calculate our money. We were not poor, just average. I never had designer clothes, we bought at the department store. We were never in debt, my mum was very good with money. Fortunately i had the possibility to give back to her a little bit what she did for me. RIP, Mum.
"It's not fair on Leah." Yes, it is not fair. Spoiling her as a kid will have a negative impact on her growing up. And now that you are 36,000 in debt, how are you gonna send her to college in the future?
When I was 7 I think the only clothes-related worry I had was whether my skirt would fall down and show my knickers when I did a cartwheel in the playground lol.
The 7 year olds I know have strong opinions about clothes: they both love blue or red clothes and anything with Minecraft, Pokemon or animals on. Designer brands are not an issue, though :D
And at 7 they shouldn't care. Glenda has started something that is going to be a REAL problem when that girl is a teenager. She's going to want the newest "thing" the minute it comes available. I remember my father's response to us kids saying we wanted something. For me it was a pair of bell bottom jeans in the 1960's when hippies were setting the fashion trends. My Dad asked me "What's wrong with the jeans you have now? Are they torn or too small?" I said "No" and he said "Well, that's your answer then. We don't buy clothes just to keep up with somebody's idea of "fashion". He always used to say at the end of those conversations "Your clothes are clean and paid for. Nothing else matters."
The kid and the dad were active at their holiday and kid enjoyed it. Mums selfesteem would be better if she made an effort of being active. Hiking and exploring around in near areas can be exciting and is excercise as well.
I do the SAME with my girls. My oldest gets them 1st & the rest is passed down to her sisters. Jeans with holes in the knees get turned into cut off shorts in the summer
I once read a statement that I try to remember when I feel the urge to buy something I don't need, but that I like and think I want to buy- "I can admire it. I don't have to own it!"
I’m similar in that if there’s something that I see that I like, I will try and wait for a couple of weeks and then really decide if I actually do want it or if I’m just seeing a new shiny thing and getting too blinded about the cost because of it. Result is that I generally don’t buy much.
I have been going back to the same antique shop for 8 months, looking at a gold ring that I really want. At this point, I am worried that if I buy it, I will somehow end up disappointed.
I have four questions: 1) Do I like it? 2) Can I buy it? 3) Will I actually use it? 4) Do I actually need it? Almost every time the last two answers are no lol
@@Tina06019 And sometimes, the anticipation is better than the reality. You can enjoy the trip and looking at all the things in the shop. I wonder if you'd return if you bought it.
What is this woman thinking? I can’t imagine how the daughter is going to feel when she realizes that her parents are in massive debt and always fighting because of your designer wardrobe.... that you never asked for.
@@SummeRain783 I agree, I myself was wondering while watching whether it's possible that she could have some kind of mental illness or even an undiagnosed learning disability like ADHD going on. It seems strange to be so isolated from your own actions to the extent that she is. I wonder what life is like for her these days.
What I was just thinking. I know all about a mother living beyond her means. Then you find out you're not at the top of the food chain. Really screws with you
What's even scarier is that her mother thought it was actually a good idea to buy her one despite being hounded by debt collectors. What's she going to say to her child when the "can't-pay-we'll-take-it-away" guys come?
Her husband needs to change as well. How can you just sit and watch your spouse ruin your family financially. My Dad would have flipped. Hope they’re doing well now
I couldn't enjoy a holiday knowing I had that much debt, and that the holiday had contributed to it. I know she doesn't care, but I bet hubby is feeling it.
35,000euros in debt, mounting letters from lawyers and risk of going to court/jail AND still going on holidays AND complaining about being on a budget during said holiday? Wow. Some kind of delusion there.
I left a DA relationship. My ex was OBSESSED with our kids wearing designer because he wanted everyone to think we were “rich.” Do you know what my kids wanted to wear? Not Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren. They wanted peppa pig, hey duggee and Disney princesses. Don’t force your children to grow up before their time xx
This is so true! I never buy expensive brands unless they’re heavily discounted but the few I have bought my daughter doesn’t want to wear as like you said she wants peppa pig and bluey clothes. I also wanted her to wear pretty dresses when all she wants is comfy tracksuits that she can get mucky in and move around in.
Dude, kids grow so quickly. You know I'm gonna be at the thrift stores and discount stores cause the kids don't mind as long as it's in good condition and their style
My son doesn't wear anything designer nor does he wear thrift store clothes. I get him clothes that will last but won't single him out as a poor or a rich kid
@@johnreed9050 I agree. But I think she meant at the age they quickly outgrow their clothes. I know families who just save their baby clothes and give them to their new born cousins etc. Usually clothes only fit for a year at the infant stage and just get passed around/recycled within the family. It didn’t matter if they were boy or girl, the boys wore pink and girls wore blue if that’s what was passed down. What does a little baby know about that stuff lol
I shop on Ebay behind my kid's back. He's been obsessed with brand names since 6. I have no idea where it came from. His friends aren't exponentially richer than us by any means. But my child is very very tall and grows so quickly that besides a new pair of shoes a year, name brands, lightly used end up costing less than new walmart clothing, and since he wears stuff twice, maybe, I can resell it and buy new (used) items to replace them.
It's astonishing that even with a threat of prison looming due to living beyond her means, money is burned by taking a vacation. I actually cannot believe that.
Bravo to her to accepting help and permitting her story to be put out there as a cautionary tale for others. That’s a brave move and it’s sad how many judgmental comments totally ignore that.
Am I the only person that is shocked that they are going on holiday while in so much debt? I thought holidays are a luxury that you only go on if you can afford it
Right, we haven't been abroad since 2017 (which was a weekend coach holiday to Disneyland Paris) and our next holiday abroad is our honeymoon next year!
@@sarah3796 not legally, unless it is actually a debt which is specified as a joint and several liability. A mortgage in joint names, married or not is both your debt. that same mortgage in one name is only the mortgage of that name, married or not, thus the time honoured tradition in Ireland and Britain of shoving assets in the spouses' name to avoid debt liability. I used to work in debt management charities in the UK, and was employed as such around the time this was filmed. Couples may choose (a la Dave Ramsey) to combine debts and assets, but that's not an actual legal position apart from strictly defined legal debts and circumstances ( council tax, certain utility bills, secondary card holders.). Marriage often makes no difference to whether or not a debt is shared. Consumer debt like credit cards, usually is the persons' own. Recovery of jointly held assets to cover one person's' individual debt is often where it can get tricky and legally fascinating, ranging from forced sale of an asset but only to the half of the debt owned by the singular debtor, with the other party recieving half of the value, to being unable to recover the debt because they can't legally recover on a joint asset eg a house put up as collateral without the knowledge of the other. heritable property is interesting - unless both parties own the house, a married person can be thrown out with nothing, because being married only gives you the right to stay there. it doesn't give you any rights to the house in the event of a divorce. (My brother and his wife have been together for 25 years, but he was never on the deeds or mortgage of the flat they shared, to exploit a legal loophole. when they sold that flat five years ago, he was able to claim first time buyer discounts for his half of the mortgage, because he technically had never owned a flat nor had a mortgage, despite being married to and and residing with the owner of the flat, in that flat for 18 years at that point. I give this example to show how a person's debts and assets remain their own, regardless of marital status, unless explicitly legally specified.) Bereavements depend on if there's a will or not and in the UK at least, there's percentages that spouses and children inherit.
I would love to see follow ups to these shows to see how things are going 10 yrs later. I love the fact that they get to the root of the issue and work from the foundation up.
@Bobs Slong U absolutely NAILED it , it’s for the benefit of others rather than themselves,, just so they “think “ they’re impressing others !!! Who give an actual damn ! SAD !
Hubby should have grown a pair a few years ago. Debt, when you're married doesn't just involve you, let alone with a kid in the mix. He should never have let it continue for so long.
It seems like he supports ALL the household expenditures while she is free to fritter away her entire earnings on herself and the child. I assume they don't have a joint bank account - that they each have their own. That's how she gets away with spending her entire salary without him knowing.

It was all for Show ! Dublin is crazy expensive & it’s obvious this is a good few yrs ago when most “ silly “ ppl had to be as good as if not better than the “ Jones “ nxt door , they completely lost the run of themselves during the “ Celtic tiger “ thought the money tree would never end ! Fast forward to 2021 times are very different ..,
this was clearly filmed in the celtic tiger era in ireland lol, it was kinda the norm to have expensive parties back then (from experience i went on a limousine for someone's 9th birthday party and we got build a bears and pizzas in dundrum) and also a lot of irish people (especially middle class suburban types) are acute to want to keep up with the joneses even to this day from the newest car to the next holiday it's like as if we never had a recession over 10 years ago
TIP. Just take your usual clothes when going on holiday, apart from the people you go with, no one else on holiday will know weather you have just bought your clothes or not, as they haven't seen you before, unless it's an essential that you don't already have like beach or swim wear, don't spend your money in waste on new stuff you don't need!
I think if she goes with her extended family then it's an Irish thing to wear different outfits etc. My brothers in laws did this and laughed at me recycling outfits. I thought it hilarious. Cba with all that.
I have to admit, when I go on vacation, I wear the clothes I wanted to throw away earlier the year. I wear them a last time in vacation so I don't have to take it back home. When I'm on vacation, I look like a hobo. The last vacation we were we took 3 suitcases with us, one broke after the ride to our destination and we went home with 2 suitcases. Since I packed only old, holy clothes on our trip, I could dump the clothes we wore after wearing and didn't had bring them back home.
Shopping is an addiction. The first thing that you want to do while breaking the addiction is stay away from it. Why do you want to go to the mall, when you know you are going to buy stuff, no matter what you tell yourself🤦♀️
PRG Because addiction of any kind is an addiction and it doesn’t matter how well you manage it the impulse will always be there which is why people who are addicted to alcohol are ‘recovering’ alcoholics
why would people go on vacation when they're trying to manage their spending issues. Skip a vacation and put that money towards your debts and go next year. I grew up poor, I dont get it
Vacation is fine but a budget on the vacation & a sinking fund for the vacation is crucial. I went on a 3 days vacay with my boyfriend only spending $200. First vacay in a year. Its important for mental health. Just a short break. Off course whilst making sure all of our bills are paid and still sticking to our big goal.
urgoodfriendkit - You DO get it. Growing up poor makes you "get it" without having to get into 36,000 debt! Be grateful that you grew up without those expectations of living some kind of fake glamorous life that is actually a trap.
The kid seemed to have so much fun at the vacation! Children don't want to be shopping in malls they want to spend their time with their parents having fun. My mother bought me all the best stuff but all I really wanted was to go out to have fun with her but she never did. I remember all the 5 times we went to amusement park and holiday to spain and to aquarium. Those were the happiest memories of my childhood and its kinda sad I csn count all of them... with fingers on my one hand.
When I grew up, almost all birthdays parties were at the kid's home, and consisted of 12 paper hats, blowers, some balloons, a paper table cloth, chips, pop, small sandwiches and a cake. The guests would bring gifts to the birthday kid, and would leave with goodie bags filled with cheap candy. Total average cost in today's $ ... LESS than £25.00. When we were over 10 we would have bowling parties which cost more, around £75.00.
When my daughter was about 9 we had a small tea party at home. She invited a handful of friends. I made her a cake with sandwiches and sausage rolls, nothing fancy. I sent the children home with a piece of birthday cake. We played games with them. The next day one of the mothers at school told me that her daughter said that it was the best birthday party shed evef been to and shed been to a few at the local community centre with a disco. Just proves that you dont need to spend a lot for kids to have fun. Children dont remember what you bought them. They remember time spent with them.
My ex was just like this except not on designer clothes, she spent everything and had nothing to show for it. The joint account, her account, credit cards etc were always right up to the overdraft, then she announced in front of the entire family "hey kids, how would you like to go on holiday!!!" - we hadn't discussed it and couldn't afford it, I lost my sheet and all I got was "you always ruin everything". My life is so much easier now she's out of my life, I was working like a madman just to keep us from going over the overdraft while she happily spent every penny I made on nothing at all.
Going on vacation, not working, and whaling on the beach is the cold turkey of my dreams. Whole family just spoilt. They could pay off the debt with the vacation money.
What shocked me the most was her saying in her 8 year marriage she had never spoken with her husband about how she feels. What kind of relationship must they have for them not feeling safe enough to share that with their spouse1😵😵
You right ,I’m 43 and I look better than her too ,maybe if she spend some money on herself she could look better and spoil his 7 years old with old those expensive things is really bad ..she’s not rich
The point of wearing designer clothes is to look good but in their case they could have used that for gym, better clothes choice and beauty products atleast. Sorry if I sound biased.I just dont understand why buy super expensive when your outfit looks too casual or tacky
I gave up the fight to look good years ago. Makes my wardrobe very cheap. But since my daughter is so pretty, I want to dress her up. At least she should look good. Fortunately she's a tomboy, so she doesn't wear skirts and just wears second-hand jogging clothes. And I gave up to buy her nice clothes.

There is not one person who doesn’t have a problem area in their life. Some may be worse than others but everyone has something. “Judge not that ye be not judged”.
So, here's the deal: "(Addiction) is not your fault, but healing is your responsibility." Now that she knows, and has even been given the tools to help her, from that day forward she is ABSOLUTELY to be held accountable for her actions. No judgement whatsoever if she takes one step back, so long as she makes two steps forward.
Jailing someone for debt seems a bit draconian. The credit companies need to take some responsibility for how much credit they extend & to whom they extend it.
Exactly I was just thinking that the other day. People who can afford to pay off consumer debt aren't the ones borrowing....the companies know this and target the low income demographic consciously. Meanwhile interest rates float skyward like it's on helium.
It is not draconian, it's a felony, if you borrow money, when you are in the knowledge of not being able to pay it off. It's like eating at the restaurant and go without paying, it is reasonable that such behavior has to be punished.
But where does the self responsibility come in. I got out a small personal loan from my bank 3 years ago that I could pay back, I have been successfully paying it back. But since then my bank keeps offering me more and more and saying I can afford it. I know I cant, so I dont get it
She is lucky her husband has stuck by her up to this debt rescue. I love my husband but would be so stressed if he was spending like this woman that I would have to end the relationship for my mental well being. I know two couples that have divorced because one spouse’s spending was out of control. I do have to question why they are on holiday at all when drowning in debt. They should have taken the vacation money and put it on her debt.
Isn't it ironic that she's in so much debt, considering what her husband does. She did really well on vacation! Awe 😔, feel badly for her. The self esteem issues are typical how some parents try to live their lives through their kids. Hope she and her family are all good
She should invest in a personal trainer and take care of her health. I think that would really boost her confidence in mind and body. She did say that she spends so much on clothes for her daughter because its difficult to find fitting clothes for herself.
@@freshprince4382 when you are a larger size though, its harder to find as nice clothes, so that's maybe what they meant as linking to her confidence, because if she can lose a little weight and improve health she will be able to fit in nicer clothes and feel good in them and more confident overall
@Alina McPherson These people live in Ireland, not the tropics. Bananas can be stored in the produce drawer of the fridge once they are fully ripened, those bananas didn't look fully ripened. The fridge will slow down the ripening process a lot, which is not a good thing. As for the canned food, they didn't look opened. In any case, opened cans shouldn't be stored in the fridge because metals and BPA can leach into food. The food should be transferred to a storage container before refrigerating.
I couldn't think of anything more boring than spending an entire holiday just shopping. Living in Australia, going anywhere is so expensive you want to do all the fun shit!
I don't know why that woman Jay allots any money for Glenda to buy her daughter clothes. Leah doesn't need anything else until she's outgrown most of what she has already. She doesn't need any money in the budget for Leah's clothes.
I think the idea with most of these people is that it’s easier to spend less than not spend at all. Cause I see these and think “oh that money is for living expense of X days” and then I see that it’s IN ADDITION to food and everything else you need. Purely money for spending....I didn’t know that was a thing for people to do every month So I feel you, but I digress. The idea is that a little less is more manageable than nothing
Lou Elaine because buying clothes for her daughter is a huge part of her shopping addiction. She is living vicariously through her daughter and if she cut all money from spending on her daughter, it could be too much for her.
Heard a lot of us and we when talking about the debt, not a lot of I and me about how it came about and even at the end Glenda wasn't really taking all the responsibility. When it came to her low self esteem I think getting to the gym and eating a healthier diet and losing weight would go miles towards feeling better about herself. Felt sorry for Leah being dragged around shopping malls when all she wanted was to be around horses.

The irony is that most 7 year olds couldn't care less what clothes they wear
When I was 7 I think the only clothes-related worry I had was whether my skirt would fall down and show my knickers when I did a cartwheel in the playground lol.
The 7 year olds I know have strong opinions about clothes: they both love blue or red clothes and anything with Minecraft, Pokemon or animals on. Designer brands are not an issue, though :D
I only cared if they had lights, glitter or Minnie Mouse on them. Otherwise who gave a damn???
My mom dressed me in really nice designer clothes growing up but they all came from the thrift store and no one knew 😂
Smart lady
I do that with my kids and we feel quite smug about it
@@worsteveroh6569 ditto.
Same with me, but mine was a really good dressmaker.
I have four questions:
1) Do I like it?
2) Can I buy it?
3) Will I actually use it?
4) Do I actually need it?
Almost every time the last two answers are no lol

Not when ur married
@@leanneweird9714 No,it’s her debt married or not.
They are married so legally he will also be held responsible for her stupid actions
Finally, someone said it. I detest the royal “we”. The husband didn’t run up the debt, YOU did. Take some damned responsibility.

I know I cant, so I dont get it
Jailing her is ludicrous. She needs a payment plan and a psychiatrist.
@Andrew Evans i won't . You just end up in crazy debt
She's a mess. If she's not willing to change, he needs to RUN.
Already pre-paid??
Yeah . A good therapist. Her anxiety and mental illness is crippling her.
She's not facing bankruptcy because of designer brands, she's facing bankruptcy because of her lack of control on her spending.
That's a stupid comment lisa. Ofcourse there are clothes she fits into
@@freshprince4382 when you are a larger size though, its harder to find as nice clothes, so that's maybe what they meant as linking to her confidence, because if she can lose a little weight and improve health she will be able to fit in nicer clothes and feel good in them and more confident overall
I love watching these kind of videos. Makes me feel so much better about myself 🤣
😂😂
Shows that money can’t buy you a sense of fashion
The woman keeps bananas and cans of baked beans in the fridge, completely insane.
@@Sparrowdean I like my bananas cold, warm bananas are horrible
@@kiiltochii1607 I've never encountered a naturally warm banana in my life - not even in the tropic, but whatever takes your fancy.

Purely money for spending....I didn’t know that was a thing for people to do every month
So I feel you, but I digress. The idea is that a little less is more manageable than nothing
Lou Elaine because buying clothes for her daughter is a huge part of her shopping addiction. She is living vicariously through her daughter and if she cut all money from spending on her daughter, it could be too much for her.
I just liked my own comment
Little daughter Leah is very well spoken
Heard a lot of us and we when talking about the debt, not a lot of I and me about how it came about and even at the end Glenda wasn't really taking all the responsibility. When it came to her low self esteem I think getting to the gym and eating a healthier diet and losing weight would go miles towards feeling better about herself. Felt sorry for Leah being dragged around shopping malls when all she wanted was to be around horses.
Over $7000 on clothes for a 7 year old in a year!!! I have a 5 and 7 year old and haven't spent that much on both of them for their clothes, bedroom furniture and toys combined since they have been alive. That's insane.
but you will spend money on cars for them, school trips, bigger house, uniforms....kids are a very expensive hobby
@@beaulieuc8910 no. I will not be buying them cars. They don’t have uniforms and even if they did you don’t have to buy the most expensive ones out there. Kids do cost money. But they don’t have to be as expensive as many people make it out to be. You don’t have to follow trends and waste money on the next gadget. My kids don’t have their own tablets, computers or phones, they get clothes on sale and no designer anything, I don’t change the decorations in their rooms, they don’t get the latest craze (think Stanley cups right now), certain things are purchased second hand and other things are hand me downs. People make it seem like kids cost sooooo much money, they do if you make poor choices on what to buy. I have a $3k car that fits all my kids. Kids can share bedrooms, or have small bedrooms they don’t need a ton of space to sleep. My kids have had two beds, the cribs they were in as babies and then they got upgraded those beds are now 5 years old and I’m not replacing them again. Kids are more affordable than some would have you believe.
The fact she spent all of her €20 on her family not a penny on herself showed her low self esteem 💔
I thought that was pretty cool ! it was something they enjoyed together
Also why are they even going on vacation when they are so in debt that she may go to jail??!!
I had all boys - all they cared about w their clothes was comfort. They went to public school but had uniforms anyway which I think is great. No over buying, no over spending on designer clothes & NO morning arguments on what they’ll wear. All uniforms were purchased from the same place - navy or khaki pants, white, yellow or navy polo shirts. Friday’s - blue jeans & school shirts. No logos on tennis shoes - a mother’s dream.
That's exactly what I tell people. When you buy these expensive things, you arecmaking those designers rich, why don't you make yourself rich instead of those designers. Plus, once those things are no longer in fashion, or when you lose them, it hurts so much!
That's right, momma, turn your daughter extremely shallow @ a very young age! Make your daughter believe that if she wants expensive items, just get someone else to pay for it! When will people learn that when paying for name brand articles, you are ONLY paying for the name! You are NOT paying for strong, durable, long lasting clothes, just the name!
Plain Jane's don't look better holding a Gucci purse. A beautiful women no one notices her purse.
How daft you think women do things to get noticed

Spending has become an illness, an addiction
I don't understand why they didn't give advices to take care about herself, loosing weight, dressing better on the budget make up etc that can change a lot her low self-esteem...
Because rhe issue is debt, not trivia about fashion.
@@anniespencer7879 they made that before
A. That could quite possibly make the confidence worse. At least in short term, which in turn would make the spending worse.
B. They are financial experts not nutritionist so they are not qualified to give that kind of advice
I agree. They have to tackle what is behind the spending. To stop the triggers or else history will repeat itself.
It seems like it’s an all around self control issue. The over eating and over spending and treating her daughter like a doll could be symptoms of a deeper issue. I hope she’s healthier and debt free today. I hope she’s better.
Why did her husband allow the overspending?! My husband and I discuss finances and budget constantly so we are both on the same page. We are equals, and that also means respecting the family account. Neither one of us overspends, especially on purpose!!
He allows it because he is getting things
Her: I feel upset when you judge me >:(
Him: * in thousands of dollars in debt becuse of her*
I wonder how they are doing today? A follow up series would be interesting.
"She earns a healthy €20,000 (£13,500) a year"
Are you serious? £13,500 is not a healthy salary, infact you would seriously struggle in life with that little money.
Don't forget this documentary is quite old being produced from 2004-2007. But yes even factoring that in its shit all to live on

I was brought up to learn, if you can't afford it, you can't buy it.If I have to buy something, I make sure I put it back before I spend again. What is the daughter going to learn?. At the end of the day, someone else has to pay for it.You have to have very little to appreciate anything. Being brought up to appreciate things and not demand them helps.
