Although it’s technically a Doobie Brother’s song, my favorite “Michael McDonald song” is What A Fool Believes. Seriously love that song. He has such a unique and distinctive voice. It’s hard to describe. And, I must say, he was very nice looking when he was younger. The beard and gorgeous eyes are definitely my cup of tea. 😊

The musicianship on this song was outstanding. Then Toto members Jeff Porcaro [drums] and Steve Lukather [guitars] laid down the groove that was sample several times over the years. Years later Greg Phillinganes joined Toto, he plays the clavinet on the track. Bassist Louis Johnson, from The Brothers Johnson, laid down the song's pronounced bassline.

I've heard Michael give an account of having to play 6 sets per day when he was starting out and that is why he developed such an unusual delivery. It's sort of like "yarling" like the grunge era bands but he was more interested in being able to repeat it consistently. What you hear is what he came up with and it became iconic.

Michael Mcdonald was referred to Steely Dan by his good friend Jeff Porcaro in late 1973 right after he got hired.
I heard Walter Becker describe finding and rescuing Mcdonald from a gutter in Glendale, CA, during his introduction at a show in 2006. Funny, one of their first gigs togther was in Glendale in 1974 along with Porcaro.

Hey, 502 boys, for more M. Mc backround vocals, try "Red Streamliner" by Little Feat. As always, you wont be disappointed by his contribution or the song. It is a cooker.

Nate Dogg and Warren G sampled the introduction and placed it into Regulators.

Michael McDonald - Mr Smooth. so much great work with the Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Boz and on and on. I also have an album of Michael doing Motown, and there are some great covers on there, (though you can't beat the originals of course.) I particularly enjoy his backing vocals on Bad Sneakers by Steely Dan. A song worth reacting to.
