Yes they played whole guitar solo on radio!!...the story is the record executives wanted to shorten the solo.....it was steve perry who said absolutely not👍🏻
Absolutely right they did. My FM station of choice at the time was K92 out of Roanke, VA. They had the coolest prime time Disc Jockey, a guy by the name of David Lee Michaels....always up in the "air chair", never failed to play this song in its entirety every single night at or near the close of his show around 10PM. Come to think of it, I still have the old 45rpm record, the original vinyl lp, the cassette & CD & all of them have Neal's full guitar riff. I've never even heard a version of the song without it.
Never heard about that. Good info!
They sure did. ❤
Sounds like a familiar Freddie Mercury story up against his record label.
Steve fought because the end solo represents the lovers fighting.
Steve fought for radio to play the entire guitar solo. And they did 🎶🎵🎶
The combo of Neal Schon on guitar and Steve Perry’s vocals is magical.
Absolutely!!
Nobody can beats Steve Perry's Vocal ability, he's a legend. 😎🎸👌
I think Perry, Steve Walsh and Lou Gramm top the list.
He's the best voice in music❤❤❤ and Michael Mcdonald
YES THEY DID
@@DropAnchor1978 Brad Delp on Boston... More Than A Feeling really tears up vocals as well!
@@suecook1326 Absolutely! He would have been next on the list if I had done more than three. I would add Jimi Jamison of Survivor, too. Mickey
Thomas of Starship.
Journey is so ridiculously good live that I literally never want to hear the studio version of a song. Live only! ❤️🎶
I agree with you but this is the one exception. Great live version but this track is so well performed and produced, I prefer the studio version. I need to hear him drag out the lyric “Two hearts born to ru-uah-un” (run). This is a masterpiece vocal performance. Live is an A. Studio is A+.
Agreed100 I saw them twice!! Ten rows back and literally blown away at their voices n talents🎉🎉🎉🎉
Wife here.., True that most reactors do not cover this song...,Journey is such a crowdpleaser.., GenX..And Steve Perry with those pipes!!..And that Awesome Guitar Work..MAGIC!!
The live in Houston version is amazing
That bridge “There’s only so many tears you can cry.” just does something to me. There’s something about that chord progression!,,,,,,
Only so many tears you can cry is my life story now....
I get it all too much
This was one of their biggest singles, peaking at #4 on the billboard hot 100 in 1981, one of their first songs they played a lot on the radio
"Wheel In The Sky" was almost overplayed in late '77-'78; I couldn't wait to get to that concert that summer! 'Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' too. Lots of Steve in the late 70's!
That tells you how good the 80s were when this one only made it to #4
Steve Perry could sing the ABC song and make it sound worthy of a Grammy! His vocal ability is magical! Love this dude!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
I was 21 years old in 1981 walking into a new house in Dallas Tx when I heard this song playing for the first time.I stopped and couldn’t move until the song was over. I was totally blown away!
And remember, this is WAY before auto tune.
one of my favorite songs from Journey. He has a great voice.
Mine too!❤
Sam Cooke was Perry's biggest influence.
Oh yes they did!!!! Radio played the whole thing!!! That whole outro was spine chilling stuff. 😅Neal Schon at his best!!!!! He got his start with Santana. And guys, this was a massive hit!!!!!
Entire song made the radio. Amazing right?!?! Great song from my youth!!!!
If you really want to hear his vocal ability, review the song “Mother,Father”
The live version, please!
Mother Father live for sure!
@@brentkraus457 Yeah that was an amazing performance
The Live version of Mather, Father is a must!!!
Guaranteed your minds will be blown. Be sure to listen to the keyboard that follows immediately at the end of the song.
Yes mother father live in Houston is Epic his vocals will make you cry!
I don't know who is making me laugh more - Ryan's 'angel' reaction or Nick laughing at Ryan's reaction! Yes, Steve is a vocal earth angel. And, agree with previous comments on how incredibly good Journey is live. For this song to sound so beautiful live is testament to the pure musicality talent and professionalism of the whole band regardless of turmoil amongst them. Journey is in their own category. And so many forget this tune, but every time music appreciators hear, they react like you guys. New York radio is the worst, however, that outro was played on two big stations.
They always played the entire outro on the radio, at least in my country, and this was on at least ten times a day back then.
No matter where I am or what I'm doing, I still feel the same way as Ryan every time I hear The Voice.
First time visiting here...guys, all of the members of Journey were heavy weights. Two players had been in Santana, the bass player had been in the Steve Miller Band, the drummer had been with Jean-Luc Ponty before he joined, Jonathan Cain had been with the band, The Baby's, and the icing on the cake was Steve Perry. I was lucky to see them live in 1983, amazing band!
Definitely ✨✨✨
Guess we should thank Sam Cooke for all those vocal embellishments Steve Perry throws into his singing. When Neal does those guitar solos, you can hear that Santana sound come out every so often. Really enjoyed this reaction and hope you check out Lights, Wheel in the Sky, Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin and Still They Ride in the future.
All of a sudden I am 10 years old again in 1981-listening to this on my new clock radio. A simpler time & great memories.😊
Almost age 13 when this was released. Cruising down the street on my bike with a radio on my handlebars, sun going down. Great memories!
Same. I was 12 ❤
My first time hearing it in my brother's brown buick the last summer I had with him in 1981. I was 16 and he took me and my youngest brother to Astroworld in Houston.
I was also 10. I remember sleeping with my little radio on and this song Bette Davis Eyes and Rod Stewart Passion playing all the time.
Now you know why Gen X and Boomers ain’t lying when they say their music was better.
Steve THE VOICE Perry...he is beyond fire...OMG, I could go on and on and on but I wont!!! Excellent choice guys, Steve gives me goose bumps!!
I love this song. Didn’t they also do “Loving, Touching, Squeezing”? That’s a great song.
I don't believe so. Talk about setting a MOOD. That song certainly does it.
@@L1623VP I checked. Journey did do that song. Here’s a link: ruclips.net/video/fTkHFQC3wow/видео.html
@@Wordsmyth8 Oops...I thought you were asking if the guys from Views from the 502 had done a reaction to Lov'in, Touch'in, Squeeze'in yet, not if Journey sang that song. That's why I answered, "I don't believe so" because I'm sure they haven't reacted to it, yet. I wasn't implying that Journey didn't sing that song. It's classic Journey.
AAAx
A little trivia: There are 156 "Na's" in that song.
Hard to believe Steve Perry could sing this fkn Good live performance,to me SP still holds that record 💞🎶🎵🎤🎶🎵🎸🎶🎵🎵
Don't ever mess with Steve Perry's voice.. you just can't.. it's so amazing. and Neil on lead guitar.. Ross on bass. and Jonathon Cain on keyboards.. and Steve Smith on drums.. just an amazing band. First band I'd ever seen out of my Delaware State Fair.. and I'm a country girl and loved all the country I had seen but at 13.. I wanted to see Journey.. Mama finally agreed to let me see them in Philly with my sisters ex.. because he was a good Catholic boy.. He hated it.. but I loved it .. Great memory.. And I was blessed enough to see them with Steve Perry 3 more times.
They absolutely did play that entire outro on the radio. This is one of Journey's greatest songs and for some odd reason no one ever reacts to it on here when they're doing Journey. Never understood that, but glad you guys broke the mold. Great reaction!! 👍
If you may want to she thought something that is unbelievable, watch his Mother Father performance in live in Houston 81.
May be hard to beat.
They've got to do Journey's Lov'in, Touch'in, Squeeze'in. Talk about setting a MOOD.
And you guys just listened to one of the BEST guitar solos EVER by the legend himself...Neal Schon. He is still ripping that guitar to this very day. I’d say...not bad for being 69 years old now. Escape went to number 1 in the nation in 1981. It rocketed Journey to super-stardom and into another stratosphere. Steve Perry is truly that “one in a million” with the solid gold voice. No one comes close. IMHO. Keep the Journey reactions coming...now you can see why we fans have loved this band for over 40 years. They’ve been a band since 1973. This year marks their 50th year rock in it out. Timeless, amazing masterpieces. Journey On!
"Mother, Father" LIVE version from the Escape tour, 1981...it'll Blow. Your. Mind.🤯
The studio told Journey that Neal's solo was 'to long!' for radio play and wanted them to shorten it! Steve Perry wasn't having it! And argued with them about it. Steve told them that if the radio station wants to start playing the next song during Neal's solo. He doesn't have a problem with that. BUT they were NOT going to shorten it!! After a battle over the solo, the studio left the solo alone.
You guys should react to the song from the 1981 Houston, Tx concert!
And YES!!! Classic Journey is 'out of this world!!'
You can't appreciate them unless you watch them live they were even better.
Peg you are so right they killed being live
This is indeed a great song most don't react to. Their biggest hit back then.
Journey is a legendary band that never gets old. I have noticed that most successful rock in the music industry have talented vocalists, Robert Plant, Steve Perry, Freddie Mercury, Ozzy Osbourne, Ian Gillan and others. The 70s and 80s are the best years in the history of the music industry.
I"m an old guy, so I remember this song coming out on the radio. Yes, they did play the entire song on the radio where I lived. It was great. Journey was on all the time, just like Foreigner, Styx, Van Halen, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, etc, along with all the one-hit wonder songs (i.e. "My Sharona.")
Love your reaction
Now you can appreciate the effect Steve has on women
Vocal perfection
Pure control. He makes it sound easy
It isn't.
Lyrics are unbelievable also❤
I remember at first thinking the album was literally called E5 C4 P3, like R2D2 until someone told me it was "Escape". Duh!!
It's hard to explain how big Journey was. Their music was everywhere, in every bar, all over the radio, playing from every car. Their concerts were true events. People went crazy. Everybody liked Journey, most people loved Journey. They were one of the biggest bands in America at the time, if not THE biggest.
Omg!!!!😂😂😂 I'm still laughing you guys are hilarious but yes Steve Perry has the voice of an angel for sure....this is my favorite song from them and I remember when I first heard it and back to Ryan you go boy that was so entertaining and Nick loses it "Priceless" love your reactions and you guys❤
You know the song is really good when the normally subdued, quiet Ryan has an outburst. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Have you ever noticed that when Steve moves on stage, his feet moves to the beat.
Send Her My Love is a worthy listen as well.
Definitely an under appreciated Journey song! Steve Perry is just an incredible vocal talent
You’ve got to listen “sweet and simple” or “why can’t this night go on forever”, that’s some of Steve’s best vocals 🙏🏿
In regard to the ease (for him) of Steve Perry's vocals, "Mother Father - live in Houston" (from this same album) is an absolute MUST. You will be blown away by the notes he hits, LIVE, at the end of the tune.
Another tune with a great Neal Schon guitar outro is "Stone in Love," also from the Escape album (now you see why it went *Diamond*). Also recommend the 'live in Houston' version.
STONE IN LOVE is my absolute favorite Journey song, with Lovin' Touchin"Squeezin' as a close second 💖
Hell yeah Neil rips
Amen
EXACTLY.
New sub here! For a special treat you should react to Journey live concert in Osaka Japan. You have no idea how truly great Steve Perry is until you hear him singing "Wheel in the Sky" at this concert! Love from a die hard Journey fan in Texas!🤠
Neal Schon is one of the cleanest guitarists ever. You don't hear his fingers sliding up and down the strings no matter how fast he plays unless it's intentional.
Agree….. VOICE OF AN ANGEL.
I've seen Journey in concert with Steve Perry over a 100 times and I'm a 60 year old guy. Always better live than in studio. The 81 concert is one of the best...lookup live versions.
Every time I hear Steve sing this song, I get goosebumps 😄
Here's another song and you might recognize it "Journey - Wheel In Sky (Live on the Midnight Special 1978) WIDSCREEN 1080p" this song is on their "Infinity" album released in 1978 and the biggest songs on the album are "Wheel In The Sky", "Lights", "Feeling That Way" and "Anytime". This is another song that Steve demonstrates his wonderful vocal gymnastics and their gorgeous harmonies. You guys are fun...I really enjoyed your reaction. Thanks
People pretty much hyperfocus on Steve Perry, but don't forget about Neil Schon-guitars(formerly of Santana), Johnathan Cain-keyboards/songwriter, Steve Smith-drummer(extremely underrated), and Ross Valory-bass! I started listening to Journey on the Departure album when Greg Rolie(formerly of Santana as well) was still singing and playing keyboards! I was very fortunate to see Journey on the Departure, Escape, Frontiers, and Raised On Radio tours! Superb live! Please check out Mother Father live in Houston 1981, you'll see Steve's vocal prowess in this song! I was 14 when I started listening to Journey and I'm now 57 and continue to listen to them with the core members that I listed before! If you've never heard their latest singer, Arnel Paneda, he's very good, but not Steve Perry! I'm glad I found you guys because you are reacting to some of the groups I love! I started to love and appreciate music back in 1976, I was 11, and I grew up listening to bands like: Boston, Chicago, Styx, Kansas, Heart, Journey, REO Speedwagon, and many more! Looking forward to more reactions from you!
I can promise you guys, especially Nick, you will love Stone In Love. The guitar solo at the end will give you that stink face we all love. Lol
Journey's "Escape", Hall & Oates' "H2O", and Styx's "Paradise Theater" - the vinyl was worn off of these during my senior year in high school. Love this.
Steve wrote this song in his car on the way from LA to San Francisco...and brought it to Jon and Neal.Steve Perry is an absolute unicorn; perfect vocals every time. The way you reacted...that's the effect Steve especially had on women. Neal wasn't into tthe ballad thing until he noticed the WOMEN suddenly appearing at their concerts. If you want their best song it has to be Mother Father, live from Houston 1981.
The song that got me hooked on Journey back in 81 at 17. Those were good times.....
I love it when you guys react to Journey. Before you decide on Journey’s best song you have to hear “Edge of the Blade,” “Troubled Child,” “Wheel in the Sky,” “Winds of March” and “Mother, Father” (consider watching the live version). Attentively awaiting your next Journey response!
I totally get you, Ryan! Theres just so long you can sit passively listening to perfection without finally pointing it out!!
You have to hear them live. What made Journey, Journey is they sound better live.
“Send Her My Love” next please !!
Journey's live album "Captured" is a musical showcase of their talent. Steve's voice, Neal's shredding guitar, Steve "Machine Gun" Smith on the drums...
Ryan, it's so cool to see you loose control, simply because you rarely do that. The three of y'all keep a smile on my face. I appreciate that so much 💖
Yes...The record companies wanted the guitar solo cut at the end of "Whose crying Now", but the band won't allow it. Brilliant.
I remember heard this song...and mesmerized how Steve's voice is so unique, as well you guys felt! My reaction was less intense, but I was in shock too. lol
Next to Separate Ways, this is my second favorite Journey song. And Nick, they played this song when it came out on the radio as you heard it - it wasn’t shortened. (At least here in my area of Pennsylvania). Glad you love Journey - it’s great to see younger people discover the music we listened to back in the day. Great reaction! 👍🏻
Nick nailed it. Steve Perry is similar to Freddy Mercury, they can sing whatever you want and it all sounds absolutely perfect.
Hey guys~ there is so much going on with your reactions!
Ryan, I totally dig your spontaneity on this one, and it set off a ripple effect with Nick losing it by cracking up, as you caught him off guard, and then there was the look on Ty's face when you stopped the music~ that was golden! 👍❤ (You even mentioned Jesus! 😲). Of course I always dig when y'all sing too. You are correct Ryan, Steve's voice takes you to another dimension. And he has that same affect live in concert. He is a talent for sure. We also get to hear Neal Schon at the end of the song show off on his guitar skills on this. 🎤 🎸 They are two of my favs.
This was awesome fellas. Love it!!! 😊 #ViewsFromThe502
I think Ryan needs to hear Steve Perry's huge solo hit from 1984, "Oh Sherrie". May be too much for him. :)
Second that! Gotta do it…
Journey is good, Journey with Steve Perry is something else, with respect to Arnel. Another great reaction!
You need to play this song from the Live in Houston concert in 1981. This whole live concert will blow your mind!!
Journey was always insane live with how Steve would just reach higher and higher vocally and schon and all would just play their hearts out. Mother Fathet live was always the song Steve said was his most difficult to pull off live but if you want to hear his falsetto you need to listen to Lay it Down from Escape or the live version of it in Tokyo. Escape really is their masterpiece record that made them Kimgs of Arena Rock but also the key creators of the Power Ballad.
The live version, in Houston, is better then the studio version.
I disagree
In 1981, the live Escape tour in Houston was even more amazing than the album. It's hard to believe, but Steve kills every song in that Houston performance.
Okay. So if you guys really want to hear Neal Schon go insane on that guitar solo at the end, you need to check that song out on the Escape Tour 1981 live version in Houston. Pretty much every song in that live concert could be a reaction, especially 'Mother Father' where Steve's vocals are literally unworldly, and Neal kills another insane guitar solo. And of course there's their national Anthem - Don't Stop Believing. But definitely check this Live version out and react to some of them.
Journey is magic with Steve Perry! Outstanding musicians and singers 🎉❤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
What is special about Steve Perry's voice?
Steve Perry has the range of a high tenor and solid alto and is considered a countertenor. He is a rare tenor altino, a rare form of countertenor, a voice that many consider incomparable. His voice is very recognizable and longtime friend of Perry's, Jon Bon Jovi, gave him the nickname, "The Voice."Aug 8, 2018 (copied from wikipedia)
It’s even better life when he sings it in Houston. You should listen to him saying mother, father life.
Journey is an incredible band with tons of talent. But you are right, Steve's voice is from the angels ha ha. Thanks for reacting to this one!
All of us gals were crying over Steve Perry. ALL of the time. Oh, and I sincerely hope that you fellows sing together whenever you have the chance. It's such a *good thing* to sing aloud
Girl, yes! Steve was everything! Women were losing their damn minds. I know because I was one of them!
Absolutely the greatest rock voice, screw that the greatest voice ever! Even Freddie Mercury acknowledged that there was no one that had that capability. It was absolutely effortless for him. No strain no effort it just happened and oh my God when it hit you just got sucked in and were absolutely mesmerized , that angelic voice and then he’s gorgeous on top of it! He had a lot of women, but he never got married. His parents divorced when he was very young and he said that he didn’t believe in marriage because too many people he knew lost everything they had and divorces.
I want to beg that man to marry me! Whew, have mercy that boy was fine! He still is he’s just more mature now. I love you, Stephen! Come get me, I’m here!
I love you!!!!❤️💕
YES!!! he IS an angeĺ you are 100% right ...best voice EVER!!
Live only for Journey!!!!!! Watch them sing this in Houston 81.
You need to watch them via a live video! What you just des ribed as a "concert" senario is so high school! Invision a packed football stadium with a huge stage across one end containing lights, huge speakers, standing mics... The lack of music concerts these days is really sad.
This was a huge hit for Journey. It was on the radio all the time when it was released. Great to see Ryan hit the Golden Buzzer for Steve Perry. Ya, he's pretty good. Neal Schon's exit guitar solo is fantastic, goosebumps-inducing. You can really hear the influence of guitar legend Carlos Santana on Neal Schon. Many casual music fans probably don't know that Schon played in Santana's band in the early 1970s beginning at the age of 16! before moving on to form Journey.
I've been a fan of Steve's for over four decades, yes, I'm old... I've seen them in concert he sounds even better if you can believe that. The gift and talent he has is absolutely stunning. 🎶💕
It's definitely one of my favorites of Journey's. My favorite and vocally one of Steve's best is Faithfully. Please do that one next if you haven't.
Been a Journey fan since close to their inception.
I missed this song upon it's initial release. When i did hear it years later, it was just ok. But it has grown on me over the years. I consider it one of Journey's best now. The outro is fantastic.
Go ahead -- run it back !!
Love Ryan's outburst over Perry's voice. Cracked me up. And whose voice deserves such accolades more than Steve Perry's?
Another great reaction, gents. One of the best RVCs out there. Keep on r'actin .
This song on live in Houston 1981 sounds as good as the record
Yes. He is an Angel! 😍
Legend baby still no body can sing like Mr perry anymore the one the golden voice ever 💯💯💯💯🎶🎶🎶🎶🎤🎤🎤🎤🌟🌟🌟🌟💕💕💕💕
THEY, JUST, DON'T, WRITE OR SING, MUSIC, LIKE, THIS, ANYMORE!! I was born 1972, one of my favorite songs from my youth and I really enjoyed your reactions fellas lol
Facts
I literally listened to this song 21 times in a row yesterday. It never goes stale.
Saw Journey 6 times in concert back in the 80s and they never disappointed. Pure magic!
Ha! It's always great to see young people discover the great music that I grew up with in the 70s and 80s. I was actually 20 when this album came out. Another reason Steve Perry's voice was golden. Great reaction!👍👌💥
I'm crying now because your reaction is almost over! Keep em' coming!
It was and still is a great song!!!
Yes they did play that entire outro in the day!!!
You have to see them live! There’s nothing that Steve can’t do. Live he shows he is that good and better. Just walks around and sings like that! It’s amazing. Gotta do a live video to understand who your dealing with when it comes to Steve and the band. Fantastic song and album period!!
Yes this is Journey's Greatest song ever.
I can't even tell you how much I enjoy watching you guys. You are ALL so hilarious! I'm an old fart and the oldies (like this one) were a part of my university days. So much fun revisiting this song with you, but with your reactions, it is FIRE! (I learned that expression from you.) Keep 'em comin', Boys. You're simply the best!
My favorite reaction channel. You guys are FIRE 🔥! You all play so well off each other. Keep up the good work. You bring a smile to my face everyday.
The best! Great song. Journey is incredible. Steve Perry is amazing! If you want to hear a nice Steve Perry solo hit "Foolish Heart". Just a beautiful song.
Im 60 seen them live in 81 and several times after LIVE SHOWS THE BEST 👌
