His voice is so hauntingly beautiful. It is so clear and the depth is amazing. This song is timeless, and most definitely speaks to the soul. Huge loss when he passed. R.I.P. George Michael.

So most girls loved him. He was not out then... His biography is very interesting. My best friend died a couple days after she went to his concert. So this song and others remind me of that time. I was supposed to go and couldn't. But have always loved his voice! Like I have said before his version of Somebody to Love is so great!!!! Queen wanted him to be their lead singer. He decided to continue his solo career.
My brother in law came in the dinning room that Christmas Day and told us he died. I could not believe it at first. 2016: David Bowie, Glen Frye, Prince, George Michael... 😢 Wham is fun, but his solo career is 🔥!!!!!

George Michael was outed (forces out of the closet) when he was arrested for cruising in L.A. in 1998. It was a very big deal, and he lost a big part of his American fanbase, since the U.S. audience was still quite homophobic.

I think so many women cried when they found out George was gay. He was a very handsome man. I really like the song, the music but hate the message. Why does a man cheat on a woman then cry like a baby when she dumps him like a bad habit? He cheated then cries about the consequences of his own actions. It's not rocket science. Duh!

It's interesting to hear "the kids" wonder about whether George was in the closet back then, like it was a casual choice some people might have made for this or that reason. I'm not being critical. I get it. The world's been a different place for the last 20 or so years as far as that kind of thing is concerned. In the 1980s, in most places and among most people, being gay was seen as one of the worst possible things you could admit to. Gay bars were illegal in most places through the 1960s and into the 1970s. In the 1980s, same-sex intimacy was a crime in at least half the US. The social stigma, even for the rich and famous, was downright brutal except in a very few places. And the rest of the country made derisive jokes about "those people" in New York and San Francisco. Even where there were rumors that somebody *might* be gay, everyone automatically assumed that they would never "admit" to it, just like nobody would be expected to admit to being an abusive spouse or an embezzler. It's amazing how much has changed in such a short time.

George wrote and produced this. Also played most of the instruments on the song. Originally, his record label wanted Jerry Wexler to produce this. Wexler was the legendary producer of numerous songs sung by people like Ray Charles & Aretha Franklin. Jerry's version was so bad that his label asked George to produce it himself. He auditioned 10 different sax players and played all the other instruments on the song. He was a genius writer, producer and singer and this is considered on the best pop songs of the past 50 years

  • @legman1476
    @legman1476 Год назад +6

I turned thirteen in 1980 so I am an 80's kid. In response to questions Nick posed; George wasn't "out" at this point partly because he wasn't sure of his preference himself. He briefly dated Brooke Sheilds and reportedly his song "A Different Corner" was about her. DJ Kathy Jeung, who starred as George Michael's love interest in his 1987 video for 'I Want Your Sex', dated the singer in the late '80s for three years, when George was 24-years-old. The 80's was an incredible decade but the Aids epidemic brought uncertainty, bigotry and massive death tolls to the gay community. This alone kept many people "in the closet."
Great video guys! Keep up the great song selections.

This track was released in 1984. It's my understanding that he "came out" in 1998. Back in the 1980s record producers and film makers preferred the artists to not come out. Most probably having to do with sales. We are obviously in a much different era today. I do not believe that he ever got married. The ring on his finger was most likely a prop.

Fabulous stuff. Thankyou so much guys. You should check out George Michael's FREEDOM. It's incredible. Also, I don't expect you've checked out Ian Dury and the Blockheads yet. Their biggest hits were HIT ME WITH YOUR RHYTMN STICK and REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL PART 3. They are both fantastic songs but of the two I'd recommend you review the latter. REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL PART 3 is so original and absolute genius, I guarantee you won't have heatd anything like it. Ian Dury, the lead singer, is British and raised in London, it's evident in the lyrics with lots of cockney influences. Ian had polio as a child and didn't let his difficulties walking interfere with his life as a rock star.

All of us have a cross to bear in life. This man gave us a lot of beautiful music. and had a beautiful soul. A beautiful voice. His cost: Public humiliation, attacks on his sexual identity, incessant demands and pressure on his career. He bore up as best he could, but fame and fortune took a great toll from him. Back then he couldn't put a man in his video, hard to do today. No, George never married, but back then I think he wore a ring to help divert any attention from his sexuality. None of that should even matter. Look at what he left us. A suggestion: Please review "A Different Corner". It's his best, in my opinion. Thanks, guys!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe he came “Out” in the late 90s when he was caught in a bathroom stall by an undercover cop who basically bated him. His video “Outside” is definitely provocative in the lyrics and the video which came out shortly after he did.
(Taken from Wikipedia) The song's music video, directed by Vaughan Arnell, shows couples of various sexual orientations engaging in lewd public activities while Michael, dressed as a police officer, dances in a public toilet, referencing his arrest for cottaging in April 1998.

One thing I didn’t see mentioned is that his partner in Wham! was given writing credits on this track in an act of generosity by Michael. He knew it was going to be a hit and set his friend up for financial security. Very few artists who were gay in that era were out. For good reason. I loved his voice then and still do. Great song from a great artist.
Most people suspected George was gay, when Wham! first hit the scene, but we weren't sure. After all, it was the '80s and a bunch of male singers were wearing makeup and sporting wild hair; George Michael was not that unusual. Him having a girlfriend was even in the entertainment news, with her appearing in one of his videos. She was very hot, and he grew a short scruff on his face, making him look more masculine. Therefore, many people were surprised to learn about him being gay, especially in such a public way. But, his fans still loved him, and they always will. His se× life should have been no one's business but his own. But hey, we've still got his music!

Maybe a few kids in the 80s didn't know he was gay, but of course anyone with any gaydar knew, however we was 'outed' when arrested cottaging (is that a term in the states?) in LA, I think, and the press (especially over there) went wild and tried to basically destroy him.... (where Sony music had failed) but the public didn't care, his fans obviously didn't care and he clearly didn't care as released Outside, a song and video of which are basically a sexed up p1$$ take of the 'incident', including George and dancers dressed as police officers boogying in front of mirror-balled urinals.

Fun fact: did you know that George Michael ( with his friend Andy as Wham) started his career in 1981 with a Rap song? Its called Wham Rap and it celebrates the fun of being a unemployed young man in Margaret Thatchers Britain beginning of the 80ties when economy was down...its just great!

The band "Seether" did a covered of this song, and it is absolutely incredible. One of the best covers ever made.

This is such a great song. His voice and soul, the sax, and the lyrics absolutely make it. "Guilty feet have got no rhythm." RIP George Michael

If you like sax, listen to Black Cow by Steely Dan or Deacon Blues by the Dan.

I know how you love great vocal performances. Try Gino Vanelli. "A River Must Flow" or "I Just Wanna Stop" from Brother to Brother. 1978.

More George Michael please! Try “Faith” (solo) or “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” (Wham) for a completely different vibe.

He never married. Had a girlfriend featured in the controversial video for I want Your Sex (one of his best songs). He eventually found a male partner who died of AIDS.
