I worked at a radio station when this came out and it was on our playlist. I was fooled as well because Bobby sounded just like Stevie Wonder. Never thought he was a honky - what a pleasant surprise!
I've seen black people do this reaction on his video, and are totally shocked when they find out he's a white guy!! Great song!! He has so much soul!! He just recently passed away. RIP Bobby!!
Bobby played the keyboard. Bass, guitar and drums on this song. Glad you listened to the song and didn't watch the video. The song is PERFECT! Deceptively simple-sounding...just smooth!❤❤❤❤❤❤
He was not shown on the album cover, because he was white and he sounded black. Everyone was surprised when they saw him. This song was played on black radio and every Black person had this record at parties, weddings, picnics and any social gathering.
I was rolling down the 95, getting on my first cruise ship job in Miami...THIS came on. It always lives in my head, marking one of the best times in my life.
Guys, if you want a Bobby on your list, you gotta listen to Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers singing "Unchained Melody" live from 1965 on the Andy Williams show. It can't be topped, never has, never will. Something you'll never regret watching. He sings solo, had a cold, stage fright, and his mom was in the audience at the time that night. A musical treasure I can't wait to see your reaction to!!! Thanks again!
I know, right? Until literally in the past couple of years I always thought he was probably this big husky Black guy. What a huge surprise to find out that he was this short, scrawny, bearded White guy.
There is quite a pile of reaction videos where black channel host is blown away when he appears from the shadows in the accompanying video for the song. :)
What introduced me to this song, and to Bobby Caldwell's discog, was 2 Pac's "Do For Love". Bobby was quintessential blue eyed soul. I was saddened to hear of his passing last year.
Funny that you bring up Boz Scaggs because he had a hit in 1988 with a song Bobby Caldwell wrote called "Heart of Mine." It's a beautiful ballad and one of my favorite Boz songs. Now, give the girls their due with blue-eyed soul. You will flip over Chi Coltrane's "Thunder & Lightning", Valerie Carter's cover of "Ooh, Ooh, Child", Lulu "Oh Me, Oh My", Smith "Baby, It's You" or Cold Blood (Lydia Pense) "You Got Me Hummin'". These all came out in the late sixties through the seventies. They're all terrific singers. + Don't forget to revisit Toto's best release which is "Make Believe." Or the superlative harmonies of Journey's "Girl Can't Help It."
I hear this song almost everyday. (Listening to Pandora: put on Michael McDonald station and let it fly). This song is so smooth. I catch myself chair dancing with this song. I start back on Monday, we'll see how much I hear it. But that is the test of a good song - it's almost 50 years old and you don't get tired of it. I love the horns! His voice is so good! I think of the grocery store too... 😂 Your picks have been great lately! 🎉🎶❤️
My hubbys best friend gave me this tape! After listening to it, I KNEW that i couldn't let my husband hear it! It definitely would have caused a rift. Dario was so notorious for hitting on their friends wives or GFS! I never acknowledged his infatuation. After my hubby passed away ,he tried to be my special friend.... I let him know it wasn't going to happen. He did stay a friend until he passed away last year. 50 years. Damn a long time. I can't hear this with out thinking of him.
Thanks to the guys from me and all that recommended this song. Glad you enjoyed it and I hope you delve more into Bobby Caldwell's catalogue in the future. Thanks again.
I have seen more videos on You Tube by reactiors who are surprised to find out the Bobby Caldwell was white. His soulful vocal style fooled a lot of people over the years. One of the best singles ever.
So glad you did this song. This is the full-length album version, which apparently runs nearly double the length of the single version which is just under 3 minutes. This was actually the very first time I had ever heard this version of the song, so thank yall for that. I'm surprised none of you commented on the fact that Bobby Caldwell sounded exactly like a Black Soul singer, and instead he was this short scrawny bearded White guy with a voice that sounded like it came out of someone totally different. I literally did not find this out until he died a year and a half ago at the age of 71. (R.I.P. 🌹) Yes, there is a bit of a Boz Scaggs vibe here, but to me there's a stronger Steely Dan vibe here, especially in the outro. If you guys ever listen to the song "Deacon Blues," you will hear that the saxophone outro in it clearly influenced the same in this song.
Glad you guys enjoyed this tune. It's sooooo similar to a Boz Scaggs or a later Motown slow vibe tune. This song was a hit when I was in high school and four of my black musician buddies asked me to do the guitar work on this song with them for a community event. I loved the song and assumed like many people that Bobby was a black guy - his voice and delivery was way too soulful. I never knew if my musical buddies knew any different back then... LOL
I loved this song when it came out, as a kid, but had forgotten all about it until I stumbled across it a year or so ago. Glad it's getting some attention. It's just SO easy on the ears. It's MELLOW- laid-back and easy, not at all forced or contrived. Naturally pleasant to the auditory senses.
Love Bobby Caldwell. And Bob/Bobby is definitely a well used derivative of Robert. I love this song. Even though it was his only Top 40 hit, he has some GREAT songs like Down for the Third Time, My Flame, Take Me Back to Then, Kalimba Song. They're all from this album and you should definitely check them out.
The video of this is great..him sitting in the dark, on a bench. We knew he was black...but he walked out as a white guy. Didn't matter loved him❤❤❤❤
LOL. I'm white and when this came out I was sure he was a black singer. 😂
I worked at a radio station when this came out and it was on our playlist. I was fooled as well because Bobby sounded just like Stevie Wonder. Never thought he was a honky - what a pleasant surprise!
Watch the video...
Everyone thought this was a black dude then Indiana Jones comes out of the shadows. It was great. He sings his ass off.
Blue eyed soul at its best.
I've seen black people do this reaction on his video, and are totally shocked when they find out he's a white guy!! Great song!! He has so much soul!! He just recently passed away. RIP Bobby!!
Love Bobby Caldwell. That song is a masterpiece.
Smooth as silk.
This should be mandatory as on hold music for every friggin phone call. I could listen to it for hours and not mind.
My ring tone!
Bobby played the keyboard. Bass, guitar and drums on this song. Glad you listened to the song and didn't watch the video. The song is PERFECT! Deceptively simple-sounding...just smooth!❤❤❤❤❤❤
You know he was welcome at any cookout he wanted to go to.
Mr. Caldwell was actually hosting the cookout.😂❤
Guys sitting on benches make good music. ❤😂
😂
Yes, Boz.
Bobby actually wrote a song for Boz, Heart of mine❤❤❤❤
Co-wrote it with 2 others. Was it written for Boz?
Can you guys react to open your eyes by Bobby Caldwell I love that song
One of the greatest songs ever made
Total fire that still sounds great today! Great pick, guys!
2024 and this is still my number one favorite of his! May he rest in peace...
This is baby makin music!
He was not shown on the album cover, because he was white and he sounded black. Everyone was surprised when they saw him. This song was played on black radio and every Black person had this record at parties, weddings, picnics and any social gathering.
Like what Motown did with Teena Marie’s debut. And, yup, def a black radio hit.
@@gabrielmcdonnell8699 Yep.
He was a great artist! This song stayed on constant rotation in my house. By the way, the guy on the sax is the legendary Boney James.
Setting the global standard for a perfect yacht rock song.
I was rolling down the 95, getting on my first cruise ship job in Miami...THIS came on. It always lives in my head, marking one of the best times in my life.
502 You Guy's Are the Best

Now the surprise. BOBBY was white

Nick’s stank face was on high meter! ❤
Cool song! Hope you circle back to Steely Dan, “Hey Nineteen” is awesome!!🤘🔥
That’s definitely a good one like the piano in it
I was just thinking the outro in this song very much has a Steely Dan vibe to it.
Team Both! Gotta love Boz & Bobby. No need to rank. They're both great.
What introduced me to this song, and to Bobby Caldwell's discog, was 2 Pac's "Do For Love". Bobby was quintessential blue eyed soul. I was saddened to hear of his passing last year.
Boz Scaggs
The song “Heart of Mine” was written and give to Boz by Bobby Caldwell

OMG YES!!!! Written by the late, great Leon Russel!
I love the reactions from black people who watch the video, then realize he’s a white guy. It’s great😂
Masterpiece of a song by the late great Bobby Caldwell

Adore this soul song. Was so surprised when I saw that he was white!
I've always been Team Both! Bobby played ALL the instruments on this song! Loved watching all of your smooth stank faces!
Absolutely one of my favorite songs of all time!
This music is called “blue eyed soul” because people find it hard to believe that he’s a white guy singing.✌️❤️
No, that's not the reason why. The term predates Bobby Caldwell.
Love this one. Surprised y'all haven't heard it.

Smooth, silky, easy, nice, yea everyone likes this song. Great music. 🎶 🎵
Awesome cut. May Bobby Caldwell RIP!
I'm enjoying hearing my name Bobbie this morning
So glad you're finally listening to this.
This song is famous on a million other reaction channels because everyone thought Bobby was Black until they saw the video!
never seen all of you be so quiet for such a long time haha! what can you say...one of the best songs ever

It’s SOULFUL!
Watch the video. He plays the guitar and piano. Triple threat. :))
No one had any idea he was white. No. One. 😂
I like the comparison to Boz Scaggs comparison. Boz is dirty, Bobby is clean. Lol

"Bobby" is a nickname that was very popular back in the 50/60s.
Reacting to an audio only version of a Bobby Caldwell song is like someone reacting to a rainbow by having a writer explain it to you.

Flashback
There is a great YT vid of his concert in Japan. One of my favorites is his collaboration with Jesse Ware on the song Break Away.
I will be honest. I do not know any other song of his. This is such a wonderful song though. Thank you 502 for having this artist on your channel. 👍👍❤
Please consider Ten Years After "I'd love to change the world"
Another Yacht Rock classic ❤❤❤
One of my favorite tunes growing up. Always thought he was black until we found the video..
Hey when you guys gonna react to “Rise” by Herb Alpert
You guys crack me up when y’all laugh even though I don’t always know why y’all are laughing…
That's how you know these guys are really friends. The secret group laugh
Back when there were long music breaks to make love to. Perfect blue eyed soul.
Team Boz
Now you guys need to react to another Bobby.......Bobby Womack and his song If You Think You're Lonely Now.
