Thank you for your perseverance. When I recommended it I knew that you would love it. It has been covered well by others including The Dramatics, Hall & Oates, Amy Winehouse, Michael Buble and others. Billy's original version is the Gold Standard. Not the Hall & Oates cover. Got more to recommend in the future.
This is why the 70's has the best music. We had everything, rock, r&b, soul, disco, soft rock, ballads, and everything funky. It's great to see you guys enjoying it.
@@PaulRoehl-fi1iw Among the best arrangers ever. Bobby has written arrangements for a very long list of great records, and is of great importance to the Philidelphia sound.
I remember the first time I heard this. I was very young but I stopped in my tracks. I had never heard anything like this. It always takes me to another place. A true masterpiece. Thank you guys for doing this one.
Class of 72, same year this song came out. Definitely a panty dropper!!! AM radio, WLS, Chicago, Larry Lujack. And I was born and listening to this in North Eastern Wisconsin!!!
Considering that this song is about two people cheating on their obligations to others it was a huge hit, everyone knew all the words, when he sings the Me and Mrs Jones parts I still get chills, still move to the music and I'm 66yrs old ❤❤❤❤
Philadelphia International, writer composer team of Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff, help shape a lot of music out of there back then & gave it a brand. It’s soul r&b beautiful, but the song is about a struggle, romanticizing the cheat, probably more powerfully than any song has ever done. Other catchy cheat songs that come to mind: Secret Lover (Atlantic Starr), As We Layed (Shirley Murdock) & the Con Funk Shun jam that Silk Sonic covered, Love’s Train.
Waaaay back in the day, I had "a thing goin' on" with someone I worked with. We would meet at our secret places, and there was a lovely feeling of walking in and looking for that one person who was going to be there only for you. It was not a thing that broke up anyone's home, it was just something special that was only meant to happen for a moment in time. This song brings it all back to this 71-yr-old. Thanks, guys.
You guys CRACK UP my husband and myself 😂 we enjoy your reviews tremendously. We don’t ask for anything, but we do follow you. Keep up the great work ❣️ Love your STANK FACES💘💘💘
As perfect a record as has ever been made. The good perfect, in every way - the performances from Billy and each person on it, the writing, arrangement, production and engineering...all of it. A true magnum opus work of art.
This song brings me backs to the lazy hazy days of summer in the early 70’s. Coming home from school and my mom had the radio playing while getting supper ready… so nostalgic, makes me yearn for those days again.
I got to see Billy Paul in 1972 , I was in the house band at a club in Berkeley, California. I was working nights and I had my supervisor give me a ride to pickup my Guitar amplifier at the New Ruthies Inn club So we walk in to get my amplifier and Mr. Paul was on stage , a minute later the band started playing " Me and Mrs. Jones " That made me look good in front of my supervisor, What a great night.
Little did we know how much great music we had on the radio in our teen years! So much awesome music no matter what station you listened to. Glad to see you guys loving it as much as we did.
I was so ready for this when you were building it up at the beginning, BEFORE he opened his mouth. I was so ready. Yes, those were the best of times and the best of music.
This was my era and I hated that they didn't have more hits. Back in the 70s I was a teenager and I swooned to this song, not caring that it was about cheating. Now as an "older" adult, I still can't help that jazzy soulful sound and voice of Billy Paul.
Your backdrop of a city at night goes perfectly with this song .... the only thing missing was for a couple of martinis to be on the set as well. Always loved this song ❤
I am SO glad that you guys got to discover this incredible song that I first heard all the way back in 1972 when I was 5 years old. This song is smoothness personified. Billy Paul's voice tells the story every bit as much as the words do. An absolute legendary classic, this is. Unfortunately, Billy Paul ended up being a one-hit wonder (but what a wonder it is), as the very next single proved to be way too controversial for radio, which just couldn't take the frankness of a Black man speaking his mind in an unfiltered fashion on the civil and social woes of society. Billy Paul was ahead of his time in many ways. RIP. 🌹 For some more Philly Soul, DEFINITELY do the ORIGINAL VERSION of "If You Don't Know Me By Now" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes (featuring the late, great Teddy Pendergrass on lead vocals).
Daryl wasn't on a lot of records at Sigma. From an interview: "I used to hang out at Sigma. I was on the beat, learning from the masters, really listening to how they made records. They really were in the art of production. That’s how I learned to do what I do." Also, WIki lists the following background songers for this song. " Carla Benson, Evette Benton, Barbara Ingram - backing vocals"
1972 wow.... I had just gotten out of high school and this song was ruling the airways.. I recall how deeply impacted I was by its truth. And it still does the same thing today. Wish you all could have been there.
I was in ninth grade back when this song was out. I recall P.E. class on gym court and waiting for Coach to join us. When then something set us off and the twenty or thirty of us guys in or gym shorts and shirt started singing belting out loud the chorus to this song. Little did I know 10 years later I would have my own “Mrs. Jones” and the kicker is that was actually her name.
This song blared constantly through the halls of my Basic Training Company in November and December of 1972. It wasn't the type of music I would choose to listen to back then. I quickly came to love this song, and still do today. The lyrics keep me from singing it, but the melody, music, and Billy Paul's rendition are amazing. It helped me survive Basic. So did "If You Don't Know Me By Now".
You guys…it’s because of fantastic reactions like this that I’m eternally grateful that you jumped into my algorithm a few years back. I remember subscribing immediately! 🔥
Geez...I was 12 yrs old when this fabulous Billy Paul was released and loved it then. 52 yrs later..it still hits that music loving cord in me. Thanks Nick and Ryan for a beautiful reaction as always...🎤✌️🇨🇦
Oh my dear sweet Lord.....this song is just a warm hug to your soul. Nick you are so right to just tip back your head ,close your eyes , and feel this song right down to your toes.....❤🎉😮😮😮
The Gamble-Huff "Sound of Philadelphia" musical empire, along with the Philly soul sounds of Thom Bell and Linda Creed, changed and transformed the soul / R&B and pop music world in the '70s. Billy Paul passed away in 2016.
I only watch you guys occasionally, every time I do, I just laugh cuz of how much you obviously love the whole 70s soul/soft rock sound😂 Funny to me cuz you aren’t that old🤣
❤Philly boy with a great song. Love him a nd his smooth ways. I will also say that the Daryl Hall & John Oates live version is amazing.....they are also Philly boys and LOVED this song.
Philly International sound at its finest. Beautiful memories from childhood, when I had no clue what the song was about. It's right up there with Love Won't Let Me Wait by Major Lance. Billy Paul was a jazz singer and this was his most successful record hands down. Gamble & Huff did the same type of thing with Lou Rawls, who also had a jazz beginning. The same quality and caliber of music is found in many of the label's artists from the period - Stylistics, O'Jays, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Spinners, Delfonics, Blue Magic and even the Intruders. Not sure if you've already covered some of these groups but they certainly should be on your radar.
This is one of the best reactions I’ve seen. It’s so much different when you just listen to the music and feel it, instead of watching a video like you’re watching a show with music in the background. Enjoyed this. ❤

Yup but this was the same decade where rockers had Disco Demolition Night @ Comiskey Park. Those idiots weren’t alone. Not by a long shot. 🤘🏽
Definitely couldn't agree more...🎤👍
70s definitely had the best R&B, soft (yacht) rock...
Don`t forget punk rock! The latter half of the 1970s was a strange brew of rock, punk, disco, bubblegum....it was the greatest time
Even the country music of the '70s was near excellent.
This song was so hot back in the day.
I'm 62, and I can proudly say, I had this 45!
How far music has fallen. Hard to believe nobody can write and perform a song like this anymore but here we are. Good reaction guys.
Agreed..🎤👍
Amen to that.
👍
Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes' "If You Don't Know Me By Now" is another Philly Soul classic.
ABSOLUTELY 💯
with Mr. Teddy Pendergrass on lead vocals!!
Simply Red does a great cover of this classic.
The love I lost !
@bobthebear1246 forgot about that masterpiece, thanks for reminding me
Whoever did the musical arrangement on this is a master.
Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff - producers
Joe Tarsia - engineering
Bobby Martin was the arranger. I had never heard of him until now.
YES!🥰

Such a great song!
Oh wow, I can hear it in my head now - great suggestion!
The opening of that song is like stepping into a time machine
No school like the old school 🌟
I love when Nick is in his feels listening to a song his facial expression changes and seems like he's sucking on a sour candy 😅.
My mom's maiden name is Jones. My dad would sing this song to her all the time. I miss seeing him do it. RIP daddy.
😇
STILL get chills from this one, Fellas!! SO, SO GOOD!!! ENJOY!!!

I feel sorry for the kids now. Music is horrible. Can't believe Taylor Swift is all the rage!!!!!

My playlist has this, which is naturally followed by "Kiss and Say Goodbye" by The Manhattans.

Also, "Love Won't Let me Wait" - so sexy!!!
Mine too. Also includes "Sad Eyes' by Robert John.

A great song from the 70s which were the best!!
So happy i was in my young like with this music
We were sooo free back then
So original. So organic. There’s just no music like this anymore
Lounges. Lounges with booths for miles. Smoked glass light fixtures, Miller High Life neon signs, and two ashtrays for every table.
I was too young to appreciate this song at the time it came out, but now...Holy Smokes! It's soooo good & sexy!!!
Those were the days. Was fantastic then and still amazing in 2024! Best music ever!!!!❤❤❤
This is on my playlist, one of my favorites of all time
