Polo, great react video. I love Michael McDonald his voice always brings me back to sitting in my room listening to the radio all night waiting for my favorite songs to come on. If you like Michael McDonald he was in a band called the Doobie Brothers which were awesome check out their song "Black Water" which is a homage to the Mississippi River.
His voice was literally EVERYWHERE in the 80's. One of the defining voices of the 70's and 80's. He sang in so many songs with so many artists, it is almost impossible to count.
I remember hearing Christopher Cross Ride like the wind and hearing McDonald in the background and being like..."uh uh, that's MM, wtf!?" In other words...you are so correct. lol
Truest of true stories: My big Brother still kind of looks like MM, but in the 70's same hair, same facial hair, blue-green eyes. Looked just like Him. I'm 10 years younger, all the female attention He got was ridiculous. I couldn't wait to get to High School. Until I got there, My experience varied.
Rare talent...Mr. Michael McDonald yall....love so many of his songs and his songs with the Doobie Brothers. His voice, his gospel style piano/keyboard playing...what a gem!
I saw Michael with the Doobie Brothers just 2 years ago and I'll be seeing him again in just 13 days because he is still touring with them. The whole band still sounds amazing!!!
Please give a listen to his duet with Patti LaBelle, On My Own. The music video is the one you need You won’t believe your ears, it’s more than incredible!! And you are right, this never gets old.
With the Doobie Brothers, with Steely Dan, with the Dukes of September, or solo; there's no mistaking Michael McDonald's gift. For another smooth tour de force, listen to Boz Scaggs' Silk Degrees album, you'll be so glad you did.🎶👏
Michael McDonald is living proof that brilliant soul singing is all about what’s inside of you in terms of lived experience, talent and ability and not about race ..
Omg!! I love Dan Fogelberg. Dan opened for the Eagles in 1975 at the capital in NJ. Fell in love with him and his music from that moment on!! 💜💜💜 RIP Dan
Those back up singers are his sisters. A talented family for sure. Loved Michael McDonald’s unique voice and he was everywhere back in the 70’s & 80’s. He has the most beautiful blue eyes and woman were madly in love with him.
I LOVE THIS GUY! Calling Michael "...cooler than the other side of the pillow." is hilarious! Great review! I have been a huge fan of Michael McDonald since he was a Doobie Brother. LOVE him!
The drummer is killing it in this live version. Everyone is so distracted by the vocals that they aren't hearing the talent behind the singer. He was such a major performer he had some of the best musicians backing him. Jeff Porcaro played drums on that song. Not sure if he played the studio and that live version though. That's why the drums are so good in that song. Porcaro is/was one of the best in the industry.
@@13_13kthis is not live. This is lip synced and mimed over the studio track. None of the instruments are plugged in. Notice no wires on stage. That’s how all these types of “Top 40” music shows did it in the 80s.
I seen Michael McDonald live in the 90s, He was brilliant, Right up there with Luther Vandross. He also did backing vocals for ToTo, another brilliant group of the 80s to check out.
I truly appreciate your openness to listen to such a variety of great music from the past. You have great ears for anything genuine and heartfelt. The era that Michael came from was the product of great musicianship and blending of genres. Where black or white didn’t matter or separate us. Blue eyed soul helped many white people glimpse into the lives and hearts of people of color and appreciate that transcendent quality of brotherhood. It also helped people of color recognize themselves in others and gave props to the legends whose shoulders we all stand on. Your show is the best of its type, for my money and you are the real deal. Keep on Pushin’.
His voice full of soul and so powerful...This song has not aged because the song quality stands the test of time..as he does. Thanks for the review, to remind one & all of an important, yet still a humble artist is the wonderful Michael Mcdonald....
" this video should have a hundred million views" Polo Mars Hahahaha Polo - some people don't like Michael's voice. Can you believe that? His voice is so soulful and can rock as well. He has a lot of great music. This music never gets old. The 1970s really has a lot of music that is beyond great.
Michael was the lead singer of The Doobie Brothers…….My favorite song of theirs is China Grove, we grooved to it in the 70’s. Love Michaels truly amazing voice!
One of my favorites from Michael is a duet with Patti LaBelle "On my own", it's stunning. Michael and Kenny Loggins sang together many times and then his time with the Doobie Brothers is legendary. No other voice like his! Always listen to your elders and I'm one!! This was a time when you either had the chops or didn't. No autotune. No effects. Pure, raw and brilliant. These guys built the table today's kids deign to sit at!!
You make it new for us again..the songs we loved in the day just with your love of music and i enjoy learning ones i missed or maybe not my favorite genre here too. It is nice to make these songs come alive again..thank you.
He sang backups on a lot of Steely Dan jams on the album Aja. I hope you have some posts about Steely Dan! If not, there’s a musical snippet rgasbors of music I am 100% sure you would love!
Thanks for showing that one Polo. I really enjoy your reactions, and great respect for the artists you react to - and yes, Michael McDonald's work was fantastic when it was released, and his work should definitely still be played publicly. I feel so fortunate to have been listening to so much good contemporary music through the 70's--90s.
Highly recommend "You Belong to Me" by Carly Simon. It was written by Carly and Michael McDonald. Originally recorded by the Doobie Brothers, when Michael was their lead singer, but then made famous by Carly. Great song. So smooth.
The smiling drummer, the great Jeff Porcaro, played on many of McDonald's songs and albums as he does here. They were good friends. Porcaro recommended Mcdonald to Becker & Fagan of Steely Dan and they hired him. Porcaro had just been hired by them in 1973 and both toured with SD in 1974. If not for his buddy Jeff, who knows. His hiring by SD really started Mcdonalds ball rolling. I had the pleasure of seeing SD with both Porcaro and Mcdonald several times in 1974 and met Mcdonald too along with the band, 50 years ago. Turns out, my high school mates were Jeff Porcaro and his brothers.
Hi Polo, love watching you, you’re the best! I’m a 72 year old woman, who spends my time listening to music. This guy was so good ,every time. Going off completely for this sound, I would love to see you reaction to Ian Dury and The Blokheads, Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick. As a child / teen of the 80's yes, this guy was and is awesome. I still love this song for sure. Can we mention that bass player..so good :) . Ty for this one, keep exploring great music !
This show was called Solid Gold and they didn't have live performances, so it is the studio track! BUT. Michael McDonald is on tour right now with his old band the Doobie Brothers and he still sounds amazing. He released a memoir (called What A Fool Believes) a few months ago that's totally worth reading (and listening to all the songs he mentions in it) to hear how he came up as a performing musician in Ferguson, Missouri from the time he was a young teen and how he very very very slowly had success and became famous. (He went through so much that when he finally lands the gig with Steely Dan in the book I actually burst into tears.) Listen to "You Belong To Me" next because it has the same yearning vibe. He wrote the music and Carly Simon wrote the lyrics.

@@Dt.1.KENOBI same
Those are my exact thoughts. 🙂
Another example is James Ingram's Yah Mo Be There where Michael McDonald is unmistakably singing most of the Yah Mo Be There's.
This man's voice is unforgettable. He was and still is pretty easy on the eyes, too. Great song.
Those eyes of his!!

The dimples and the dazzling smile. He kind of could be Sam Elliott’s cousin. ❤

You gotta hear him on lead with The Doobie Brothers “Taking it to the Streets”

Michael’s music ages like a fine red wine. 🍷
Him and Patty Labelle.. duet singing on my own...
