If you like Michael McDonald he was in a band called the Doobie Brothers which were awesome check out their song "Black Water" which is a homage to the Mississippi River.

Truest of true stories: My big Brother still kind of looks like MM, but in the 70's same hair, same facial hair, blue-green eyes. Looked just like Him. I'm 10 years younger, all the female attention He got was ridiculous. I couldn't wait to get to High School.

The drummer is killing it in this live version.
Everyone is so distracted by the vocals that they aren't hearing the talent behind the singer.
He was such a major performer he had some of the best musicians backing him.
Jeff Porcaro played drums on that song. Not sure if he played the studio and that live version though.
That's why the drums are so good in that song. Porcaro is/was one of the best in the industry.

I truly appreciate your openness to listen to such a variety of great music from the past. You have great ears for anything genuine and heartfelt. The era that Michael came from was the product of great musicianship and blending of genres. Where black or white didn’t matter or separate us. Blue eyed soul helped many white people glimpse into the lives and hearts of people of color and appreciate that transcendent quality of brotherhood. It also helped people of color recognize themselves in others and gave props to the legends whose shoulders we all stand on.
Your show is the best of its type, for my money and you are the real deal.
    Keep on Pushin’.

This song was Michael McDonald's very first Top 10 hit as a solo artist. The song did peaked at the #4 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the early fall of 1982. It also peaked at the #1 spot on the Billboard Soul chart as well. By the way, the female backup vocals on this song is Michael McDonald's sister, Maureen McDonald. This song is a definitely banger indeed for Michael McDonald's solo debut song.

The smiling drummer, the great Jeff Porcaro, played on many of McDonald's songs and albums as he does here. They were good friends.
Porcaro recommended Mcdonald to Becker & Fagan of Steely Dan and they hired him. Porcaro had just been hired by them in 1973 and both toured with SD in 1974. If not for his buddy Jeff, who knows. His hiring by SD really started Mcdonalds ball rolling.
I had the pleasure of seeing SD with both Porcaro and Mcdonald several times in 1974 and met Mcdonald too along with the band, 50 years ago. Turns out, my high school mates were Jeff Porcaro and his brothers.

This song and most from this era are still unbelievable! I grew up with a Father who was a singer and musician. He would gig out a few times a week with his band. We always had great music playing in my house. I fell in love with this type of music. All of my siblings and I became singers and musicians. I keep this music close because it reminds me of my Dad and I just love it so much. I was talking to him about how much I loved his music and he apologized to me... I said I'm not sorry, I love it. I grew up in the '80s and '90s and you weren't "cool" if you listened to older music, but I didn't care! I listened to all kinds of music! I'm just glad that is no longer a thing, and now there are people all over the world that know this great music!

Those lyrics tell the truth so well. I can her leave, the red lipstick on the cigarette, the faint smoke trailing upward, crossing to peer out the curtains and watch her gray Pontiac moving away, as I sit there stunned, once more.

McDonald was a true asset to everyone he played with… starting with Steely Dan, then the Doobs, then solo and tracks with Patti LaBelle, James Ingram & David Pack. Also check him out with Donald Fagen and Boz Scaggs on the Dukes of September / Rock & Soul Revue!
    Great stuff.

Michael McDonald has such an iconic voice. So many collabs through the years, but you always know it's him. There's a funny SCTV video with ... I want to say Martin Short... that does a spoof on Michael coming to a studio to sings just a line or two on a song., and then tries to pick up his payment, but then he has to run back in and sing the same line again... it's funny.

This is kind of random, but Will Ferrell did a Broadway one man show as George W Bush when he left office, called "You're Welcome America, An Evening with George W Bush" (Filmed by HBO). In one scene where his character of Bush is thinking about his secret crush on Condoleezza Rice, this song starts playing and a lookalike comes out, they do a super hot dance routine together. It's so funny. Now every time I hear this song, I can't help but see that dance routine in my head. There's a video on RUclips, called "You're Welcome America, Condi scene". Cheers

This show was called Solid Gold and they didn't have live performances, so it is the studio track! BUT. Michael McDonald is on tour right now with his old band the Doobie Brothers and he still sounds amazing.
He released a memoir (called What A Fool Believes) a few months ago that's totally worth reading (and listening to all the songs he mentions in it) to hear how he came up as a performing musician in Ferguson, Missouri from the time he was a young teen and how he very very very slowly had success and became famous. (He went through so much that when he finally lands the gig with Steely Dan in the book I actual burst into tears.)
Listen to "You Belong To Me" next because it has the same yearning vibe. He wrote the music and Carly Simon wrote the lyrics.
