      @@m0nty0-ii hey, dude, can you do the analysis not only of historical backround but paintings on walls in Brennenburg, items and furniture? The game is filled with interesting assets, though I would say the game feels more like the end of 18 century rather than 1837. Matches were invented in the beginning of 19 century and there were really no need for tinderboxes. Also Daniel's clothes on an art is more like of the 18 century. Just my guesses.

    I think Daniel's death following Agrippa's passing through the portal was a form of justice for the innocents he killed. He paid for his crimes with his life and took it a step further by killing the man responsible for all of the kidnappings. Furthermore, I think the game hints at Daniel achieving redemption when they show him in the "other world" following the sound of Agrippa's voice.

    • @m0nty0-ii
      @m0nty0-ii  6 лет назад +89

      That is a fair bit of reasoning - the only closure I didn't receive is after Agrippa assured to Daniel that "it would be all right".

      @zekethegeekX01 6 лет назад +46

      @m0nty0-ii  6 лет назад +52

      The only epilogue we've seen is an unofficial one in the form of a custom story called "Through the Portal". It was pretty decent. I'd love to have some real closure on this.

    • @genzi78514
      @genzi78514 4 года назад +30

      I also think that's the good ending.
      Daniel did horrible acts because he was afraid of death.
      He continues to being afraid during the game, but he has to overcome all his fears from previous experiences.
      For example, he is trapped in a room, after remembering being trapped in Algeria (a traumatic experience for him), he has to deal with THAT THING of the water after remembering something in the water in Gibraltar, the first time he is chased by those monsters, it's after he remembers chasing the girl...etc.
      After passing all those traumatic experiences and surviving, we have the ending, and we can choose.
      If he chooses to die, he overcome the fear of death, the biggest one, the one that leads him to act as a monster himself and probably the one he did should accept instead of killing innocents. That's why he is rewarded with Agrippa talking with him, while the other ending (in which he chose to survive) he has to live with guilt and shame for the rest of his life.

    • @artyomalekseyevich5927
      @artyomalekseyevich5927 4 года назад +19

      @@genzi78514 Well, Daniel seems to be ok with living in the revenge ending,
      Plus the revenge is really hopeful, in terms of music and ambiance, I think Daniel accepts what he did and believes he deserves a second chance, I don't think he will spend the rest of his life in guilt.
      I don't think Daniel dies in the Aggripa ending, I think he is saved and brought to the "other world" where he will live a new life.

    I've always been obsessed with how much of Amnesia's lore was grounded in history, that's immersion done right. It felt like i was actually in that time period.
    I always wanted to see Brennenburg castle as a full design and how the game's levels would've been mapped around it.

      I felt the exact same. I wanted to see a full layout design of Brennenburg, too.

      @@luxitos2867 yeah i saw that as well when i was young and obsessed with Minecraft - i thought it would be the perfect game to recreate it but the proportional inconsistencies really make it a problem - kinda like how half life 1 and 2's full maps also overlap.

    This is a nice video, but it largely overlooks another historical figure: Johann Weyer, one of the first true scientists and outspoken critic of demonology and the persecution of witches. You mention him briefly as Agrippa's student (which is accurate both in the game and in history) but many of his accomplishments in the game seem to practically outstrip Agrippa, as Weyer was one of the only wielders of the orb who successfully kept it out of the hands of the Shadow (for good or ill).

    • @m0nty0-ii
      @m0nty0-ii  6 лет назад +74

      Ah, a legitimate criticism! Thank you - I did overlook this. That's all on me. Now I feel like I really missed out by not talking about Weyer or more about Brennenburg. But don't worry - the followup to this video will discuss this . I've learned a lot in a year and hopefully this one will show.

    Amnesia the dark descent, probably the best horror game i've ever played.

  • @runswithbears3517
    @runswithbears3517 6 лет назад +243

    There are some interesting tidbits floating around about Daniel which deserve some investigation. For one, in the game the player character, presumably Daniel, has two distinct fears. One of the dark and one of water. The fear of the dark is rather obvious, since you lose sanity when you are in the dark. The fear of water returns a couple of times in the game in the form of the Kaernk, which is suspiciously invisible. Daniel probably got his nyctophobia from his entrapment in the tomb in Algeria. About the aquaphobia we only get a few hints in the form of loading screens hinting towards Daniel falling overboard the SS Hortensia on his way from Algiers to London.
    A recurring theme in the game seems to be Daniel confronting his past and it has made me wonder about the relation between Daniel and Alexander. I haven't found a ton of evidence to back this up, but I'm starting to think Daniel and Alexander may be aliases for the same person, Daniel representing the "good" and Alexander representing the "evil". Especially the name "Daniel" (which means something along the lines of "God is my judge", quite fitting considering the acts of the player character) and the fact we're never given his surname make me suspect it may be an alias. The "Dark Descent" would symbolize the player character descending into the dark recesses of their soul to confront their evil side. Purifying the soul by casting out the evil is also a theme in alchemy, to which there are many references in the game. There's also an interesting parallel to the Jungian shadow, which keeps pursuing the player until he deals with the dark part of his soul. So far it's only a theory, but it's worth looking into. There's so much symbolism in this game that I wouldn't be surprised if there were some deeper meanings behind it.

    • @m0nty0-ii
      @m0nty0-ii  6 лет назад +50

      This is a fantastic tidbit and I'll definitely give credit to the finding in my next video which analyses the loading screens - including the event of the SS Hortensia. I think your symbolism makes sense because Agrippa even mentions it when he meets Daniel. I'll be looking deeper into it as I prepare to release it, so thanks for getting involved and sharing your knowledge!

      Daniel didn't drink the amnesia mixture until just before we start the game, so that isn't *backstory* per se. I believe there is a note that says he "somehow knew how to put it together" because of some knowledge the Shadow put into him.

    Good video, very informative. Amnesia's story is so intricate and deep, and it's nice to hear someone else who's passionate about it shed light on its history. Although if there's one thing I would have changed, I would have just put a small corrective note in the corner of the video at around 9 minutes. Dedicating an entire portion of the video to your correction breaks immersion a little bit and kind of breaks the pacing of the sequences as well. Overall, however, great job! I think the motive for Alexander wanted to visit this 'otherwordly home' is because he wants to be reunited with his (most probably) deceased wife. In one of the desk in the laboratory there is some kind of urn with a jewel on top of it (I don't really know what it is). When you touch it, you'll read a mystic diary or something, most likely, the thoughts of Alexander himself. The game didn't explain what it is, but if you find other urns like those, the notes actually makes sense. It's Alexander writing or speaking to his deceased wife. About his ambitions, his emotions, the feelings of loss, also talking about Daniel in some parts.

      I thought the assumption was that Agrippa is talking to Weyer and asks him to save Daniel. Then Agrippa addresses Daniel directly and tells him that everything will be alright as he nears the shimmering light.
      The way it read to me is that Daniel is being guided by Weyer into another world/plane. After all, Agrippa was just a silent severed head when Daniel sends him through the portal (and we don't know for how long Weyer's tonic would keep said head alive) and yet now he's communicating with Weyer and us again. So it's not unreasonable to surmise that Weyer has restorative abilities at his disposal.
      I truly don't believe that Agrippa would leave poor Daniel to die.

    I'm so thankful for this video, see: I never played Amnesia blind myself. I understood that it was well appreciated and so forth but never realize (exactly) why. Now the gameplay makes so much sense, I mean the pacing of it.
    I'm eagerly waiting to get my hands on the new upcoming Amnesia: Rebirth. And thanks to your analysis, I will be paying A LOT more attention to the story and its details as I play through this new installment.
    Thank you! In my opinion, quality beats quantity easily when it comes down to these types of videos. :-)

    Without a doubt, the greatest horror game of all time... I'm aware that Resident Evil and Silent Hill exist, and as much as I love and highly respect what both games did for the industry, this gem breathed new life into the horror genre and made a huge impact on the gaming industry as well... So huge was the impact, that even the two original survival horror giants took notes in both RE7 and PT (Rest in peace). Even Outlast and Alien: Isolation were clearly inspired in a lot of ways by Amnesia. I consider it highly underrated and truly cannot wait for the (proper) sequel that is Amnesia: Rebirth.

    The whole extracting an essence by causing pain and fear from the adrenal glands in humans is scarily similar to how people in the past used to harvest a substance called Adrenochrome. Pretty scary how accurate the game is to this while also exaggerating it quite a bit. However, still fucking terrifying. Scariest aspect of "Adrenochrome" is that it was believed to make you live longer and stay youthful, always wondered if this was another way the Vampire legend began but either way, the way in which the game handles this subject is pretty damn spot on. Even some of the notes are creepily similar to how the process was done in the past. One of the main reasons this game has stayed scary for me is the historical parallels within it.

    What i still don't understand is how Alexander came to earth. Some people say he was banished from his world ( which could come from his rather sadistic behavior since he never had a problem to kill or torturte people to reach his goals and prolong his life with vitae) but that's nothing more than a wild guess. At least in game note or memory from Alexander how this happened would have been nice.

    • @luxitos2867
      @luxitos2867 Год назад +1

      He was banished from his world by his own people. They never get into detail about it but this much was confirmed. One of the notes found states that Agrippa's student Weyer (who already possesses at least one orb and is traveling the planes while still communicating with Alexander in order to convince him to free Agrippa) is negotiating on his behalf for the lifting of his banishment.
      And it is strongly implied that Alexander's wife is still alive. Not only do Alexander's "diaries" speak of her in a present tense (and yes, these stones were magical diaries where Alexander kept his thoughts) but he isn't human and he is either immortal or extremely long lived. His wife would be the same. Also, the civilization he comes from is extremely advanced in otherworldly arcane science. Alexander mentions how primitive Earth's "technology" is and that he was forced to build a complex (and yet what he calls "crude") system of pressurized steam, gears, and even find a way to harness lightning throughout his entire castle just to simulate the Traveler's Locket from his world.
