  • For this grand Halloween special, I take a look back at arguably the most influential horror game of all time, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I look at it's qualities, it's problems, and it's impact on gaming and the cultural mainstream.

    Amnesia lore fan here
    Ok so the reason why Daniel's diary entries are scattered is due to Alexander's servants scattering them, oh the fact Daniel witnesses other people's memories is because he is still connected to the orb in a way and the same is for Alexander, therefore they technically share the memories

    To those who questions Daniel's escape when the elevator is destroyed, by the time he enters the orb chamber, the shadow have already consumed or destroyed most part of the brennenburg castle. Maybe there is an alternative route after shadow's destruction?

    I’m not the easy to scare type, but there is something about this game that frightens me to the core. I’m playing amnesia right now for the second time and for some reason it’s just as scary if not even scarier than the first time. The jump scares don’t get me, but when the monsters come I always shit myself. In my first play through I would get scared by them surprising me, now I’m scared way before they appear because I know they are coming. I played through outlast a lot of times and I’ve never been genuinely scared of the enemies chasing me, but in amnesia, I’m actually afraid.
    It is the only game that managed to scare me, and I don’t mean getting startled by lil jump scares, those are not real fear. Amnesia makes me feel actual fear.

    • @lathrin
      @lathrin Год назад +1

      Yeah it's such a terrifying game. I think it's a perfect combination of the atmosphere and the extremely tense music. I get what you mean with Outlast too, it's sub-par after the first hour or two and it's always the same pattern of simple puzzles and navigating sn area. Amnesia is a more complex game in its scope so it's only fair that Amnesia has more ways to scare the player and changes up the gameplay formula with more success

    • @mike731188
      @mike731188 5 лет назад +15

      That would be an interesting topic. I feel like the inability to fight back (effectively or at all) is almost a requirement for horror - in Penumbra, I stopped being afraid after I found out how easily you could just smack the head of the enemies, and the game became boring because of it.

    • @inkthetuna5142

    7:46 Nope, that's the Old Archives.
    14:10 Actually, all of those questions have answers.
    1. The shadow brings these journals to Daniel to torment him.
    2. The area you start in is one of the safest in the game. He needed to go somewhere safe because he would be vulnerable.
    3. Again, the shadow shows Daniel these things to torment him for what he's done. He is shown the memories of those he killed and tortured so that he can pay for doing so.
    Also, at 14:44, this issue can have multiple explanations. Aside from the fact Alexander wouldn’t use this door often because the prisoners would have to be dragged through the sewers to get to the torture chambers, the door is likely blocked by the shadow. It is probably doing this so that Daniel could go through the same places as his victims did, as well as put him in a position where Agrippa’s orb shard would be in his way.
    Another explanation could be simply due to the castle’s terrible condition, as many of Amnesia’s doors suffer from the “it won’t budge” syndrome, often because of rubble blocking the way.
    But the explanation that makes the most sense is that Alexander simply locked it to buy himself more time. It’s not convenient if he is actively trying to hinder your progress.

      @@scibrew2922 Except why would the grunts take Daniel's journal? They have no reason to trash the guest room, and if they did take his journal, why would they be left in open areas where Daniel could easily come across them again?
      Though it is true that the shadow is trying to push Daniel along, it is trying to show him the horrible things he's done.

    • @xMorogothx
      @xMorogothx 4 года назад

      The shadow is not trying to ”show daniel what he has done” what even makes you think that’s the cas? The shadow is an otherwordly entity that is the protector of the orbs. Its not interested in guilt tripping daniel lol

    • @RamenLlama
      @RamenLlama 3 года назад +2

      @@xMorogothx it is very interested in guilt tripping Daniel lol. Throughout multiple points of the game you see it actively block Daniel's path, chase him but not outright kill him, it even brings him back to life and taunts him by locking him in a small room and growing all around him, before unlocking the door and letting Daniel proceed (Nave). The Shadow is 100% sentient, or at least WAS in this game. All of OP's criticisms of this game are a bit pointless and ignorant imo bc a lot of the questions and negatives he had have been addressed and answered, not only throughout the game but by dev interviews and in forums.

Otherwise, don't scold me on lore please.

    Just bought The Amnesia Collection on XB1. About 4hrs into Descent and I'm absolutely amazed at just how good it is. I'm a horror game fan but rarely gets scared while playing them. This game actually has already produced quite a few terrifying moments. The control mechanics of actually having to open and close doors increases tension and panic. Barricading a door and hiding in a corner as I lose my sanity for fear using my lantern is absolutly brilliant. The atmosphere and story are great. I'm absolutely in love with this series so far and have been told the best is yet to come, Especially when it get to A Machine for Pigs. Can't wait. Great vid btw. Subbed for sure.

    Just started playing this series for my first time and love it just due to the fact it doesn't only rely on jump scares. Having to actually manually open and close the doors create so much panic and tension. Last night I had to barricade a door and hide in a corner while losing my sanity because I was too terrified to turn on light while listening to it search for me right outside. Oh God, I'm trapped in the dark. No where to go.ಥ_ಥ

    Gotta be honest here Amnesia:The Dark Descent is way more scary compared to the new Rebirth.The atmosphere in the Breneneburg castle is always pressuring.If it's not dark everywhere then it's the ambient or fear of the monsters around the corners,the ambience makes the fear of monsters even stronger,various sounds like piano in old archives.The silent Daniel makes it even more scary.Amnesia rebirth gives more space for puzzles and story then actually trying to scare the player. It also is not so dark altough i can live with that because it's obliviously the Algerian desert and it would be very strange if it had minimum amount of light just like in the Brenenburg castle.The only moment in the game i was actually scared of was the old expedition ruins where we start to notice some connection with the old game.
