  • How does the 1080Ti perform in Star Citizen? The answer? Pretty well at 1080p and 1440p! I've compared it to a 4080, 3080, 4060, 6700XT, 3060, 2060 and 1660!

    I believe the 4060 beats it at lower resolutions because the 4060 has about 10 times the L2 cache capacity, while the 1080 Ti can match and beat the 4060's performance at higher resolutions due to the 1080 Ti's wider memory bus (352-bit vs 128-bit). The relatively massive L2 cache (24MBs on the 4060 vs 2.75 MBs on the 1080 Ti) offers better performance the smaller the data that is being addressed, while the wider memory bus doesn't become a limitation as quickly as the resolution increases, compared to the tiny 128-bit wide bus on the 4060. It goes to show how architectural decisions can impact framerates at various resolutions.

    back in 2016 I bought my 7700 1080ti 32gb system and still play most games well enough for 1440p. i spent around 1500 to 1700 for this pc at that time. I consider the 1080ti some golden age tech for how well it has kept up.

      The only reason I have compelling me to upgrade, is the fact that I own an 8K TV, and though 4k SC, max settings is sufficiently 'peng', being able to play at 8K would be four times the amount of 'peng'.
      Still can't justify the price though, which sounds a bit stupid considering th average price of an 8k 86 inch TV. The difference, is I got it at a considerable discount. The TV didn't cost much more than flagship GPU today.
      It's worth noting, that though many modern games will choke at like

      yeah, got mine in early 2017, some ROG OC version for €860, not even the cheapest 1080ti back then.
      just looked thru my pc window and oh boi, its covered in a thick layer of dust, didnt realize it was that bad
      I dont wanna play SQ42 in 4K on it tho, also its still coupled with a quad core and 16gb ram,
      What will be released first? SQ42 or RTX5090? whats ur guess? ;)
      my guess for sq42 is Q42025 but i have no guess for rtx5090 release
      if sq42 releases first i might as well upgrade very soon

    Just built a itx build with an old 1080ti i had lying around together with a 5800x3d and 16 gigs of ram. Was worried at first that the gpu and ram would make the game not that good but in 1080p its doing great mostly around 60+fps . Dont really "play in citys but it performs better than the laptop its replacing. Compared to the big brother with a 4090 and 7800x3d in 4 k 32gb ram its a simmilair experience . Clouds are off on the low end build though

    I had a Gigabyte 1080 Ti for a long time and fully concur that it is still a beast and able to run modern games pretty well. I upgraded recently to a 3090 just to see what the ray tracing and DLSS nonsense was about. Those features are probably the only thing giving the edge to the 4060, however it will be interesting if AMD's FSR (or CIGs scaling tech) becomes available for the 1080 Ti, as this will make the 1080 Ti a very viable cheap option.

    Been running a 1080ti @1440p on water for 6 years. she's doing so well that i've rewarded it with a 5800x3d (saw a huge increase in 1% lows coming from a 8700k) After that, I don't think my situation calls for an upgrade until Vulkan.
    this is one of the few games I still play on a regular basis.

    We typically see ithe 1080ti's advantage fade away in newer games that uses async compute, compute shades, mesh shaders, variable rate refresh, all techniques that speeds up specific parts of rendering. While star citizen is adding new graphics effects, it's still using the underlying tools from the DX11 days, and the 1080ti is an old fashioned beast at that, big chip, high clock speed, lots of memory, vs the cut down newer cards like the 4060 and 6700xt that are really weak in raw compute, relying on those techniques to deliver reasonable performance.
    We see this reflected in the behavior, behind the 4060 in space, neck and neck in lorville where they have to deal with way more geometry and memory, way ahead in Orison where the clouds are just a compute benchmark.

    I've tried 4090 on 1440p monitor followed by 1080Ti more as a joke and I couldn't believe how well it performed. Yes, it was running 100% all the time, but temperatures we're not crazy, and game run lowest around 16fps compared to 4090's 25fps at Lorville (sometimes) but most of the time 40+ fps. I also have a laptop 3050Ti with 4GB VRAM and you just can't play SC there it's 20fps average.

    30 fps in cities, 60 fps in space
    It's only since this years with some recent game i need to change my 970 because they need 6GB of VRAM and i only got 4
    But if this wasn't the case i should totally continue with my great old friend for sure.

  • @StillnessInMotion88
    @StillnessInMotion88 6 месяцев назад

    Would be nice if you added an average of not just standing in empty soace but focused mostly on real situations a player would actually be in on a daily. What I mean is it would be nice to see an avg fps for bounty hunting in space, for example. This is where real fps fluctuation and inherently gameplay experience show their true colours. I know servers fluctuate, ofc, but this would be a more realistic gpu representation in my opinion.

    • @MaraxOne
      @MaraxOne 6 месяцев назад +1

      I can tell you that on 1440p monitor it was perfectly playable. When I got some crazy FPS drops, all my teammates with better cards got them too. At any point I didn't get in to situation where FPS would affect my gameplay, only new locations or burning caterpillar were issue (for everybody). I would not buy 1080Ti to play SC, but if you already have it you're good to go.

    • @StillnessInMotion88
      @StillnessInMotion88 6 месяцев назад

      @MaraxOne I concur with your statement. I'm just trying to say that static scenes are not a representation of the actual fps one might experience in usual gameplay. From what I saw, being in empty space alone is one thing, being in empty space with AI immediately drops somewhat the fps, let alone if one is in asteroid fields. But then again, he is just trying to find the most replicable baseline, sc is so unstable from play to ply this whole conversation is pointless 🤣

    My 5700 XT has had no issues with SC's Alpha at all. I hardly ever even get a missing floor glitch. And Full Release Games are no issue at all, Hell I never had ANY of the problems people were crying about CyberPunk having. unless I got in a FAST car and went in a straight line through the city, then my system would bog down a little. I have Far more problems with too many players in one area of SC then I do with Graphics.

    In many ways I think this sort of echoes the fact that SC at its almost core is still a sort of 2016/2017 game. Looks a lot better than it did back then of course, but a lot of people bought 1080s (including me!) for Sq42.
    1080Ti didn't seem worth it over the 1080 at the time but it really was the card Nvidia couldn't make again (at that price). I actually think sadly in that way, and how it affected their market segmentation, it may have done more 'harm' than good (basically killing RTX2000/some of 3000/expectations of 4000), but there's no denying it was the 4090 of its time.
