- Star Citizen 3.23 has finally delivered Vulkan! How does it perform on AMD GPU's? I've tested using a RX 6700XT, RX 6600 and RX 7600 and the results are looking very promising! It might be time for AMD users to drop DX11!

As a AMD user I switched to Vulkan and haven't looked back
This ☝
have fun without any HDR and the worse volumentric lighting in a game since Crysis.
@@_Kaurus its still in beta and not feature completed, but its already better than the stuttering mess that is DX11
yeah same.. massive difference
Can’t wait for Multi threading
Does that mean multi threading for CPU? I'm clueless, sorry..
@@Empty12345 yes right now Vulkan is single thread on CPU, not sure when they’ll add multi thread but it should help a lot with the CPU
@@falmatrix2r Ah, that's great! That means more performance for my mediocre setup! Cheers!
Hope that it's will save my 9900K
When is multi threading expected?
As a drummer with a 6700xt, I can tell you I'm convinced.
I'll try Vulkan.
I was looking for a drummer's opinion in this regard, so thank you very much!
EDIT: Oh, I've arrived at that part in the video now... Now things make more sense 😆
@@brei2670 😂
i bough her today lol good to hear this..
I couldn't even go to Hurston on a Vega 64 without getting down to 3-20 FPS. After swapping to Vulkan, I get anything between 45-75 FPS there. I do plan on upgrading at some point, but I can actually go everywhere again with what I've got. Thanks a bunch for pointing this out!
I tried vulkan after your last vid on my 3080Ti, and yeah, vulkan at the moment in SC has massive memory issues. Mem filled up to the 12 gigs when i was about to take off. This was on 4k, FPS instantly went to -50%. I went back to dx11 with all the stuttering issues.
Thanks for the info!
AFAIK that huge mem leak is fixed on 3.23.1, there might be other smaller leaks tho.
I am starting to wonder if this was an issue with Nvidia cards. That or it isn’t as noticeable on AMD cards having more vram.
i run on Linux with dxvk translation layer and personally I have seen slightly (very slightly) better perf with dx instead of vk. It may be that with vk, i cannot disable vsync without the game crashing and when disabled in config, the game doesnt even start for me so I'm sticking with dx for now on my 6900xt, but I'm eager to properly try out vk...
Seems a lot of that is fixed now. I was having the same issues when 3.23 first dropped, but it's mostly good now. Just a little graphical nonsense on Vulkan.
I jumped form a 1080 to 7900gre, so it looks like when I load SC I should try out Vulcan 🖖?
I'd give it a try at least!
Welcome to the other side 😉
Stability first. Rapid fire follows. Its good to see them diligently working on this. Whatever it takes to get the thing playable.
I know its been a mixed bag for me with the free event going on.
As a amd user I hardly ever get amd stats it’s always nvdia, this alone gets my sub! Thanks brother keep up the great work.
I have a water cooled Red Devil 7900xtx. Not gonna lie, for the grand the card cost me, water block notwithstanding I'm extremely happy. Does everything I want it to do.
Vulkan fixed my blackscreen issues with my RX 6950XT. I can now run my card at it's full potential again ! I even run the Photorealistic clouds On hehe
it's still doing it for me man, any chance you could let me know what settings you're using?
the saddest thing is that with an on screen display like MSI Afterburner or CapFrameX for performance overlay, Vulkan just crashes instantly. Thats the only reason I am not using Vulkan yet on my 6800XT
and yes, i could disable it, but I won't
How does it go with the adrenaline overlay?
Man I was so excited to try Vulkan out on my 6700 XT last week. When I switched and rebooted the game it got stuck in a shader loading loop. It would load 8% and then freeze and I would have to force the game closed and start again. It would go up about 8% each time till it got to almost 100% and then crash and start all over. . . Is anyone else having this issue ?
Thank you for the video and the comparison ! Great vid,
Oh my god. I am a 5700xt user and suffer from the issues you described. I always thought it was SC’s general issue of lacking performance! I never knew it was specific to AMD.
For Star Citizen, I had major stutter issues playing with DX11 on an A770. Once I switched to Vulkan, The majority of the stuttering went away. Now, I can't run RiverTuner with the game because of the anti cheat software.
I have an all Red system (5600X and 7800 XT) and since 3.23 hit the EPTU I haven't turned Vulkan off. All those micro stutters that happen on DX11 have pretty much disappeared. I really want HDR back but the smoothness is a fine trade off right now. I am really excited to see what them turning on multi-treading does.
I often play SC on my office machine; an R7 3800X / 16GB @ 3600 / RX 570 8GB.
From what I can tell I'm not getting drops quite like what you're describing - the performance variations I get seems to be consistent with what others report (e.g. Lorville), just lower frames than "average", of course.
I have Adrenalin up in my 2nd monitor while I play. In this patch the lag, stuttering, and stats in general have been better overall on DX11, but the card won't upscale (game window remains minimized regardless of settings combinations), and Vulkan invariably causes a CTD. The game also consistently tells me I need to "upgrade" my drivers to a previous version.
I haven't really had the time to troubleshoot those issues, but in general the game is noticeably smoother.
The only recent Nvidia card I have is in a laptop; I was able to use Vulkan and the upscalers on that, but without much improvement, and I didn't care much for the appearance of the upscaling. Having said that I haven't tried it since the 21.1 patch; I understand they fixed a number of things.
If you haven't done so and if it's of any value to you, it would be nice to see a video on the software and methods you're using to conduct your tests - it would help us reproduce those tests on a large variety of machines, and you could gather other's data if you were so inclined.
Great info thanks!
Doing some sort of explainer video for the testing is on my list of things to do! Would be great to have data from lots of other machines!
I also have an rx 570! My game crashes with Vulkan on launch as well, I got the "update drivers" message in 3.23, but it's gone in 3.23.1, game still crashes with Vulkan though
I have a 6700xt and i find with the latest 3.21.1 build from the time i have played i found that dx 11 is still smoother and i get higher fps plus can run the in game CIG upscalling plus you can run amd frame generation from the amd software which gives a decent boost to smoothness. Been playing the intel bunker missions and getting around 70fps in game fps maxed out graphics on 1440p, and with frame gen on in the drivers getting close to 140fps. With vulkan i found fps is lower in cities than dx 11 and getting stutters, and you can't use frame generation with vulkan right now. Think i will keep using dx 11 until next patch and try again, or wait until they add multithread rendering. Either way doing bunker fps missions or bounty missions in space, this patch does run really good compared to anything CIG have dropped ever.
I switched to Vulkan as soon as it dropped and my game is much more consistent. I have a RX 6800 XT
Is the 7800X3D significantly faster than the 7700X on Vulkan? Has anyone tested this? I know Vulkan is not fully implemented yet but that's the comparison I'm the most interested in.
well Vulcan doesnt seem to work for me. Everytime i activate it in the options the settings get reversed after restart of the game. No clue why it does not safe the settings.
I would love to see a video testing some of them stripped custom windows installs like AtlasOS and ReviOS with star citizen compared against stock as they are known to kill a lot of background windows tasks and cut idle ram usage by 500MB-1GB. They tend to give really considerable performance boosts to super low end machines in games but I wonder since SC is so resource hungry if it would have any effect on a high end machine?
Either way, would love to see a test done
I have the 7800xt but when i change to vulkan and click "launch", it crashes. I cant even get to the menu before it crashes, forcing me to go to the files and changing the files. Any fixes?
Did you exit/reset game after setting vulcan?
i have yet to fully switch, due to some hard crashes after a certain amount of playtime. it varies how long i can play, but it will hard crash with no apparent reason. the game will simply shut down and i will be shown the launcher saying the game crashed. i have yet to get this on dx11. but maybe in 3.23.2 or next driver update, i will give vulkan a try again :)
Past year I've been having hard black screen crashes with my 6950xt. After Vulkan release, I haven't had a single crash, but when I switch it back to DX11, the crashes start happening again.
my vega doesn't work, some fixes is coming on amd 24.5.1... P.S. Does it work with 16gb ram?
I really wanna love this game. I have fun, when it works. The amount of overall server lag and bugs, makes the experience lackluster at best. For instance, today I logged on chat doesn't work. Hit enter and it freezes the game until you hit enter again. No chat box pops up. Bought the Aegis Titan to try out. Love it, until im landing on a GIANT landing pad thats completely empty not a soul around, and my gatling gun just falls off the ship. Cant pick it up. Cant use the multi tool to pick it up. Can't holster the multi-tool. Keyboard presses just don't do anything at all. After all that, my guy needs to eat and drink. Good thing I brought some stuff with me. Except the only way to use those items, is to drop them on the ground first. Thats the only way the character will use them. Hit alt + h to remove my helmet before eating or drinking....and nothing happens. Drag it manually over to local inventory....nope. Doesn't work. Here's what Im running. CPU: i7-13700K, GPU: AMD Radeon 7900XT, RAM: 64Gb, SSD: Samsung 990 Pro 2tb. I don't know what's going on with the game, but 700 MILLION dollars later and it still runs like shit more often than not. Its also really nice that the pledge items you buy with actual real money, are gone as soon as you die. New armor from the pledge store? Sure. Use it for a half hour and watch it go bye byes when your ship explodes for no real reason at all. RSI.....do better guys. This ain't it.
Was playing vulkan rock steady, then 3.23.1 SC update and 24.5.1 AMD drivers, I cant play for even 1h without a crash, 6700XT
when I switch to vulkan my game doesnt start, any tips?

I've heard some people say that they disabled all the optional extra stuff in adrenaline software to get it working. This sort of stuff is the beta nature of the feature unfortunately!
Are what happened to 7900xtx test forgot ?
Unfortunately I had to return my one- it was suffering with the hotspot problems that early reference designs had!

It felt worse the one time it loaded, game refuses to load in every time Ive tried since with Vulkan, yes even after waiting in the main menu for the shaders to do their thing. (Also weird black-bar artifacting)
Are you on the latest drivers? I've heard people report that turning of FMF etc in adrenaline can help.
So, that MIGHT have fixed the whole not being able to load the game. But the weird black-bar during loading remains.. also upscaling isn't working properly so I luse about 10-15% of my right side....
EdIT: And now among another deluge of visual issues (broken MFDs for one) I dunno.
Hello, i was wondering if a 3600 cpu paired with a 6600 gpu and 32gb on ddr4 would work on low quality, and what would the frames be like in a city. What is a budget build you would recommend (700$) for somewhat a decent gameplay
Don't buy a 6600. I bought one one year ago to replace an rtx1060, and I keeped it only one month after experiencing huge stutters at some places. 8gb is not enough for amd cards with this game.
6700xt 12gb vram, 3700x or 5600x. 16gb system ram.
What u have is just under this setup yet under performance in main titles. Above is what you should be considering for base gaming. 😉
Need to try Vulkan with my 6700XT
and?
Sadly something isn't right with my RX 6650XT because when I enable Vulkan the game won't even start. After a few minutes the black screen will CTD. I'm guessing I'll need to wait for further development in the Vulkan front.
I’m having the same issue as well on a 7900XTX. I haven’t spent enough time messing with graphics settings but I saw someone mention reducing sharpening to zero. This weekend I’m going to revert back to default graphics and see if I can get it to launch that way.
Yeah a number of people are reporting the same- i'd try the normal stuff- fresh install of the drivers etc. But you are right, this sort of stuff is to be expected at this stage of Vulkans development!
Nice work when the multithread comes and we get to see what having 8 cores can do . Im still staying with Nvidia for the time.
Looks great. AMD is what I’ll be upgrading towards once my 1080ti dies. Unless Nvidia decides to lower prices, but I doubt it. Therefore price / performance is going to be AMD, possibly a 6800 or 7900.
my favorite SC informer
Great stuff £10.42 . Its is A Hell of a lot smoother we will see a performance improvement with vulkan multithreading. I think some are reluctant to move to Vulkan, as AFMF works well with dx11 but even that can't stop the hiccups you get . Also Vulkan is not supported yet with afmf. I can''t get CAPFRAMEX to work with it in vulkan or Afterburner for that matter without it crashing. how did you get it to work.?
Yeah really looking forward to the multithreading! I didn't have the overlay on in CapframeX so that might've helped me.

It seems i am the only one with worse experience with vulkan. I have an rx6800 and 5800x3d. Sometimes i have the same fps than dx11, but when it goes lower it is half what i have with dx11. And i do not feel a smoother experience at all.
Good stuff, thanks
My 7900XT has a nearly flat frametime graph in SC using DX11 On high 1440P. Is it just the RAM?
A real Vulkan implementation with multithreaded? Back to intel!
Switching back to Vulkan 🖖 dx stutters like a mf anyway so i can live with it
I have two systems, one with a 4090 where Vulkan runs like a dream (especially the Frame Pacing) and one with a Vega 56 where Vulkan doesn't launch. I've read on Reddit that there is an issue with AMD drivers. I tried a lot to solve this issue but nothing worked so far. AMD has still a bad support regarding drivers. Sorry to say that but nVidia is here a lot better!
People were giving me crap for using vulkan and I kept telling them it was just smoother. Didn't realize how much smoother it was.

@@thierrybo6304 the 6600 and 6800 are not the same. The difference between the two is why you're having problems. You need more vRAM. Pull up AMD's metrics tracker (L-Alt + Z) and you'll probably see your vRAM getting maxed out. The 6800 has 16GB of VRAM and the 6600 only has 8GB.

@rrekki9320 Figured it out. When MSI Afterburner is toggled on, the game immediately crashes with Vulkan. When I toggle it off, it works.
Vulkan definitely noticeably better. Much smoother.
Why AMD only? NVIDIa is worse with VUlcan or wjat
AMD is a "dont do fancy" kind of card architecture. It does basic well, but fancy isnt what it is designed for.
I see AMD patriots repeat stuff like that all the time. All they want is base raster.
NVIDIA and now Intel is better for fancy work.
Vulkan has nothing to do with having an AMD gpu, it's an API.
As a AMD CPU and Nvidia GPU user, Vulkan is useless to me.
🤣🤣🤣 This game is a joke! 12 years still in Alpha LOL
Vulkan = Crash lol
I feel like the graphs with frame times should go up to the same values to show how dx113D compares to Vulkan as it looked like Vulkan was more choppy until I realized the y values went up to 700 on dx11 vs only 140 on vukan
just listen to the video
Completely agree! Unfortunately CapframeX isn't very flexible with the scale. I tried to explain it in the video, but I'll have a think about how to show this in a better way in the future!
@@tenpoundfortytwo You can normalize the scaling on the Y-axis by selecting something other than "Full fit" on the drop-down menu near the bottom left edge of the graph.

In my extensive testing (5 mins in the small room you wake up in) I had around 65fps on DX11 and around 72fps on Vulkan in a CPU-limited situation on 7700x and 7900xtx. You welcome. 😝
Really glad to see this video come out, and quantify some of what I have been seeing since moving to Vulkan. I am running a 5800X3D and 7900XTX combo, and the biggest thing I have noticed is that with Vulkan, I have no "stuttering" when moving through the environments. Overall FPS is slightly lower than DX11, but it is also much more consistent. I have noticed that I have way fewer d-sync issues, and that the GPU doesn't seem to be using nearly as much memory or working as hard.
One issue I have had, that can only be fixed with going to dx11, and coming back, is that some times I can no longer interact with things. Like changing armor, taking off med gowns, putting a drink in my hand, etc.
Great info, thank you!
Exactly what I have seen as well. lower fps, but much much smoother. The issue not being able to interact with things has been around a long time and is usually fixed by holding the delete key and waking in a medbed :-) The huge thing for me was way fewer occurrences where my friends were desyncing all over the place. Makes FPS gameplay much more immersive!
6900 xt Vulkan runs like crap, stick with dx11
Can confirm this. Memory leak is also insane
AMD cards would be allot faster with Vulkan. But CIG have admitted their not really testing AMD GPU's. So absolutely zero optimisation for Radeon.
look i use 6800xt and use amd rsr and gives me the best overall looks good feels good and not as fuzzy as fsr or there own up scaler yes frame gen nice but still think RSR
i hate that vulkan cant support monitoring programs for now so i have to skip and yeah, its better for me but will have to stick with dx11
I switched back to Dx11 for AFMF (frame generation)
I own an rx 6600 (non xt)
I find dx11 with frame gen is doing a better job for me to on a 6700xt so far❤
AMD says AFMF for Vulkan frame generation will come 2nd quarter 2024, so not too much longer now...

For me (R7 5800x3d, 32gb 3733mhz, 6900xt @4k) i had Problems with Vulkan. It Was buttersmooth though, but the Fps with Vulkan were about half of Dx11. I tested only in New Babbage outside the City with view towards the City. As i mentioned buttersmooth. But with about ~30-35fps instead of ~60fps with Dx11. So CIG TSR with Vulkan is the right combo then? I use DLSS but after while my frames drop like crazy.
@@rashonkelly3598 From what I've been noticing I have similar performance using either TSR or FSR, but TSR doesn't have the same jagged edges at distance like FSR has with the upscaling and looks a bit cleaner. I'm not sure about the DLSS vs TSR difference though, but from what everyone has been saying the difference depends on hardware set up 😭
@BealBega I noticed an horrible ship miniature on the shop lookout screen with fsr and tsr
Vulkan for doom 2020 was insanely successful for every type of hardware but especially so fir AMD. Im glad to see its making its way to star citizen

second forced to play with it coz have screen tearing
third vulkan didnt work with LosslessScaling app framegeneration 2.0 or 1.1
going back to DX11 with forced fast vsync(NVpanel) coz have better game experience
Way better with Vulkan on my 7900gre 5800x3d. Less stuttering and much better picture in my experience.
It's interesting - it appears they've sacrificed DX11 totally to start moving to vulcan as those nasty DX11 frametimes and pauses I am seeing on my 6900XT are anew thing in 3.23 for me - the issues simply didn't exist in the previous several patches. 3.22 was pretty darn smoooooth 3.23 on DX11 is darned awful.
Vulkan as far as I know, I haven't checked the hotfix channel, does not support AMD FMF. I have a slow cpu (1920x threadripper), and it runs poorly enough I prefer to use dx11 and FMF at the moment.

Let's get real. This game runs on a single CPU core.
my game just insta crashes when I try vulkan
@tenpoundfortytwo Hey, my PC is exactly the min. requirements of SC (ill drop my specs below) and since we all know they are bs i am thinking about upgrading to DDR3 32gb 1600Mhz RAM, thats what i could currently afford, would this improve my freezing/crashing slideshow SC experience?
Windows 10
i7 4790 (no K)
GTX 1050ti 4gb VRAM
DDR3 16gb (2x8gb) 1600Mhz RAM (could be swapped to DDR3 32gb (single) 1600Mhz RAM for 86€)
1,5tb Seagate BarraCuda 3,5" HDD (Windows 10)
119gb Intenso SSD (SC)
Love your videos and channel :)
Hey, a very good question! It's probably more complicated than it first looks. Swapping from 2 sticks to one could potentially lose you performance, but in theory 32gb should be better for stuttering.
Ultimately, I would probably save the money towards a newer system. Even if you picked up a Ryzen 3600, motherboard and some cheap ddr4 ram it would still be a pretty massive upgrade. But I get that that would cost a fair bit more.
Vulkan gives me non stop crashing :(
can you try 5600xt?
BAAAAD!!!! FSR is totally broken and the mobiglass is unreadable.
It has been broken since early PTU.
idk why you care FSR is worse than CIGs solution, just use that
Vulkan.. for the win
So amd only then..
Unfortunately selecting vulkan results in crashes at start up for my RX580
Do you have upscaling on? I've heard some people are having issues with that.
I am quite happy with amd. I am running a 7900xtx with a 7950x and 6ghz ddr5 on linux and it works quite well. even though fps go all over the place, the lowest i have is likely on orison fluctuating around 40-60. I prefer to use Linux over win, because with some flag tweaking on wine-ge, take away most of the flickering it had in the past. Because of work related stuff i'm not even able to use the latest vulkan drivers, which i suspect has better performance.
I keep hearing good things about linux! Thanks for the info!
@@tenpoundfortytwoUsing Linux has a few drawbacks:
Overclocking: It's harder without user-friendly GUIs. I use Windows to find stable settings first.
Peripherals: Some need extra tweaking. My Tobii eye tracker doesn't work, but joystick and rudders do after adjustments.
Maintenance: Updating and troubleshooting can be time-consuming due to Linux package management, and things can break easily.
However, Linux offers great performance, especially for lower-spec systems. For high-end systems, it provides performance close to top-tier Windows setups at a lower cost.
Thanks for your content-your breakdowns and explanations are very helpful!
While I have an AMD CPU, I do not own an AMD GPU, I own an Nvidia GPU, an RTX 3060 with 12 GB of VRAM. So, what does the Vulkan API offer me? And what are the upscaling options offered in Star Citizen that pair well with Vulkan? I should also point out my monitor is a Samsung Curved Monitor 1440p at 165Mhz refresh rate and HDR 10 I believe.
I'm in the middle of some upscaling performance testing- that should be the next video. But the short answer for you would be to turn on DLSS and probably stick with DX11 (I think most people with Nvidia GPU's should probably stick with DX11 for now).
The 3060 is probably struggling at 1440p, so DLSS Quality should improve your frames in GPU heavy parts of the game!
CPU doesn't matter, for gpu vulcan offers more conistent time to render a frame at the cost of lower overall FPS and losing HDR, the benefits are more pronouced on AMD gpus than Nvidia as nvidia already performed better on dx11. for you switch to vulcan if you have frame pacing issues (stutters) and dont care about HDR
@@tenpoundfortytwo Thanks for your reply. As I am not minted, and on a tight budget, it will be some time before I can replace either the CPU (currently running a Ryzen 5 5600X) and the GPU (am thinking of an RTX 4070 PERHAPS) neve mind any thoughts of going up a platform to what is current.
