K.S.O., I happen to think Unfinished Sympathy is the greatest song of the 90s and one of the best ever. I worked as a DJ when this was released and whenever I played it - a song without a bassline! - the floor filled within seconds. People just gravitated to the emotion.
The "hey, hey, hey" sample is from Planetary Citizen by Mahavishnu Orchestra and John McLaughlin (1976).
Massive Attack are no one-hit wonder. Your next step? I would recommend Protection. Different vocalist, equally magnetic pull.

there's something about the weird phrasing and romance joined to "how can you have a day without a night... really hurt me baby" that makes me think she's missing the relationship so much she would rather have it be a bad one than a finished one
if you react to Massive Attack's "Protection", as I'm sure you must, do take note of how everyone's sitting in the video and try and think where the camera actually is. It's the director Michel Gondry being weird again!

The sense I get from the lyrics is that she got signals that either were profoundly false or that she profoundly misinterpreted, or came from a profoundly fickle person who can shift an attitude out of nowhere, leading her to an impression that something good was ahead that was in fact never going to come, this song being an expression of the emotions when that kind of harsh reality kicks in.

"Daydreaming" - you have Tricky - former Massive Attack member - 3D, and Daddy G (both of Massive Attack), also contributing vocals. "Five Man Army", also from this album, the lyrical back and forth between the various members is insane. "Karmacoma" from Protection will send you into a trance with its hypnotic rhythm. If you want something with heavy bass, and "dark" lyrics with a trippy video to go with it, listen to "Risingson" from the Mezzanine album. My interpretation: the singer fell in love with somebody she cannot have or somebody who doesn’t know about it, and walks on the blvd to tell her story to everybody on the street, who certainly knows what she is talking about. At the same time, the message is, “I don’t need you to listen, I just need to express what I have inside”. That’s why she disappears around the corner at the end without making sure they are listening to her. What makes me think she has never been together with her love is that she uses a lot of conditional expressions.

The video shooting is amazing: LA in 1991, Compton or Inglewood, a very dangerous place at that time; everything seems spontaneous but actually is carefully planned.

This was released in 1991 during the first war against Iraq. The one launched by G Bush senior. They released it just under the name "Massive" because songs and band names with ,military or violent overtones ran the risk of getting no airplay!
