I use both, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and the SEL35F18 at my A6000 and I can confirm what many others here are saying: The Sigma is much sharper at wide open aperture. Unfortunately this test doesn't show that. Even at f/1.4 the Sigma is brilliant in the center, while the Sony is much softer at f/1.8. You have to stop down the Sony to f/2.8 to have the same sharpness. So if you want to have high extraction with high sharpness for brilliant portraits, the Sigma will give you better results. The only big advantage of the Sony is the size. But to be honest, if I had to use f/2.8 instead of f/1.4 for the same sharpness, I would go for the Sigma and accept the 3cm longer lens. There is a well known F2.0-autofocus-bug of the Sigma lens. AF-S is not working properly between f/1.7 and f/2.0 when using PAL (f/1.4 is fine). When using NTFC the problem is between f/1.4 and f/1.7. That's why many US users don't recognize that there is a problem but just think that the lens is not so sharp at open aperture. But it's a bug which Sigma knows well (they don't have a solution yet). Solution: The problem is completely gone if you use AF-C. Then the lens is also very sharp at open aperture. If you want to use focus and recompose, there are some tricks you can do to make it work with AF-C (back button focus or using one button as AF/ manual focus switch).
Your comments were actually better then the video to me :) I was considering both lens and using in a A6500 i won't miss the OSS and i assume also because the focus system on the A6500 is amazing that more shots would be usable and not only 70% then again that i can only know after i try :)
I had been torn between these two lenses, and thanks to you. I purchased Sigma 30mm. So far I love it. I am experiencing occasional freeze (or hang) when using touch focus with a5100, but it is manageable. Thanks for your great content!
Interesting. I have the a6000 and the Sigma lens and I love it. I only do photography and I am blown away with the sharpness of the lens and it has quickly become my go to for walkabout photography.
Hey Paul, since you have one, i wanna ask is it true that the barrel distortion is not applied in camera as explained by this video? Or is it able to correct the distortion by activating the correction from the lens menu as suggested by Sigma? Thanks.
I don't find much in the way of barrel distortion but I initially process in Lightroom which removes any distortion anyway. It's a great lens and I will be getting the 19mm and 60mm to go with it.
I had both of these in my hand just yesterday (thanks to Hunts in Cambridge MA for getting them for me to look at) and the size difference made it a no-brainer. To me, the whole idea of the 6000 is the size. The Sony lens keeps the package small. The Sigma lens is more than twice as large. Just not what I wanted.
It would be great if you could do a follow up now that 1) you have an A6500 with IBIS and 2) the Sigma has had a firmware update that is supposed to minimise manual focus/AF issues. I'm tossing up which one to buy to use for mostly photos (portrait and street photography), but some video as well. With an A6500, the lack of OSS in the Sigma might not be an issue at all and it appears to be a better lens apart from that.
Hmm... I have the Sigma and on both of my a6300's I can use the in camera corrections to get rid of the barrel distortion. Works on my 16mm Sigma as well. You shouldn't need some 3rd party software to do this. Perhaps you're working on an older firmware? However, there are no firmware updates for the 16mm and it works.
I am UK based, and left for my holiday home in Europe, taking with just my a6000 and Sony F4/18-105 G.. Amongst others, I left behind my super A mount Sal35f14G, as with the LA-EA4 attached its to darn heavy. So here I am away from home and need to make a short break to Boston MA. Wanting to travel light, taking the bulk of my 18-105 is a non starter. So I hunt around, and find two of your videos that impressed me. Now thanks to your videos I have a Sony 35mm F/1.8 winging its way from Amazon Germany, and I am truly happy. So happy, that I had no hesitation in subscribing to your TechnologyMafia site.
Another fine video. I really appreciate your delivery, coverage and reviews. I am just restarting with the A6000 that I bought several years ago and am wanting to narrow it down to a couple travel take alongs
Dear Sir Arthur: I want to thank you very much for the content that you have been uploading to the network. It has been incredible how every doubt I had turns out that you had done a study work on it. You are very honest, natural and objective. You express yourself very well. I love that you consider the ratio of size, weight, comfort and simplicity in each comparison. You have helped me a lot to save money and not be disappointed by a bad purchase. On the other hand, I also love that you continue to value the Alpha 6000 and that you do not get on the train that the latest of the latest is the best. Finally, you have a great collaborator in your wife and your videos would not be the same without her. Thanks a lot to both.
I've had the Sony 35mm 1.8 for awhile and love it. Thinking that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, I was going to purchase the Sigma. Thank you for saving me $300+! Compactness, native focusing speed and OSS, yep. Thanks!
Hi arthur, thinking of getting the 35mm over the sigma 30mm. Do you still like the 35mm better? Does the 35mm create a shadow when using built in flash?
I have the sigma 30mm, for walking around town lens its a little big imo...however I took some shots of people on the street and the photos were impressive with the sigma...in my use case Im considering getting rid of the sigma 30mm and going with the sigma 56mm 1.4 and using it for portraits and some street photos and maybe pick up the 35mm sony later on...the size of the sony lens is very compelling for spending alot of time out and about , I hate bulky cameras and why I went with the sony A series
Hey nice video. I have a question I like the sigma lenses better. But I was thinking on buying DSLR Nikon but the sigma lenses are more expensive the double of the one for Sony. Should I go for a Sony body to get the lens? Would give me the same quality as a Nikon camera?
on the spec sheet the sigma 30mm weights 9.3 oz (265g), while the sony 35mm weights 5.5 oz (154g). there is also a significant difference in length, 1.1 inch (28mm). I am considering the sony due to its size. I almost never use manual focus so... after all these years, would you still pick the sony ?
Thanks for the review, I purchased sigma 30 mm lens very satisfied. I also have sigma 56 mm to shoot with my a6600 Sony. Any recommendations for a walk around telephoto lens?
I have been having focus problems with the 30mm f/1.4 Sigma on my A6500. Yesterday, I used that combination at ISO 320 giving me 1/250 second at f/5.6 to shoot a group of five people standing in a row outside. I used single shot, AFS, wide area with face detect turned on. The camera showed focus squares around several of the peoples faces but the focus would go in and out. It ended up with the row of subjects just ever so soft with the background more in focus. What do you think went wrong...
I am using Sony A6400 (no IBIS) but I have a weebill S gimbal, should i get the sony or the sigma lens? I mostly shoot travel videos and little bit of photography. The Sigma is a little bit more expensive by 30$ here in Singapore.
Since the testing description was silent on this issue, please be sure to confirm that you were either testing autofocus accuracy while on a tripod on a fixed object or that you were using AF-C. Why? There is a measurable difference in depth of field between F1.4 and F1.8, especially when the subject is closer to the lens. Any minor swaying will cause the image to come out as soft or not as sharp. This is especially true when shooting portraits at F1.4. You need to nail focus on the eye (notice that I said singular) and you just won't be able to do so with any consistency if shooting in AF-S. A lot of the complaints about focusing accuracy stem from this lack of understanding of wide aperture lenses. Most people can get away to some degree with sloppy technique with wider angle F1.8 lenses, that just won't get you through the day at F1.4.
The Sigma 30mm f1.4 suffers from too much annoying AF noise. Also, it displays excessive chromatic aberration. Returned it and purchased the Sony 35mm f1.8 and am very satisfied with it.
I just ordered the Sigma 30mm f1.4 for my a6500 on Amazon. I was between both lenses and this video helped me choose which to buy (and backs up what I read about both of them). I got my a6500 with the 18-135mm and while it is a great walk-around zoom, I want to really see what the sensor is capable of with a sharp prime lens.
Great videos! Would love to see more event style videos like you car show coverage. Seems like living abroad would provide some great opportunities for that.
Love this!! I got the Sigma last year and wasn’t sure how well it’d compare to the Sony which is quite a bit more (price wise.) Glad I went with the Sigma as I like the colors more in this video. :) great comparison.
How can you compare how sharp an image is or how much grain the image has if you don't shoot at the same ISO. Change your shutter speed to achieve the same exposure but leave the ISO and f-stop the same.
Great review! I'm looking to add to my camera bag, and want a wider lens. I have been using the 50mm Sony lens, and it works excellent for portraits but its super tight in a lot of situations when I'm in smaller spaces. I think I'll put the Sigma on my wish list :) I loved the warmer tones that the Sigma provides. Thanks!
I am testing both lenses at the moment. Seems the Sigma is indeed the superior lens, BUT i find the AF to be better on the Sony. With moving subjects: kids, pets etc i found the Sony the better choice.
I finally start to get the big picture. The Sigma lenses seem to be a dream and would love to have one, BUT I cannot tell you how AF sometimes super important is. Picture this: IF YOU have nephews or family you wish to photograph and CAPTURE THAT MOMENT, AF is sooooo important. I love vintage lenses and manual focusing, but coming back to the row above: until you focus or you wait for a slow lens to focus (AF), you would have lost so many nice moments and cute faces of your family members. See? It just depends WHAT you are shooting. There is NO perfect lens, out there, that is super fast, super sharp and super good in low light and with OSS on it, unfortunately. If you the guy who stays there with his tripod, lights up a cigar and shoots stars or landscapes or buildings, go for the Sigma. If you my guy, with crazy little bunnies hopping all over the place, go for the faster AF lens. Sony stands out pretty good, as well. Nobody will zoom 100%, 200% in your picture, to see if it is sharp. Nobody will see the less saturation (which, I like and you can anyways add more saturation in your picture profile in camera), BUT I do not want to stay and correct barrel distorsions. I want to send the pictures through wi-fi. And usually, my sister in law wants the pics copied on her HDD, as well, before we leave. So, I think I would go for the Sony...
I would love to see more low light tests as my main reason for buying the sigma would be the 1.4 f. I have the Sony 50mm 1.8 and it is great but for shots at weddings or dance halls I'm wondering if the 1.4 can get me to the point where I can get away with less flash photography.
Another great video, love your videos. I also have a A6000 that i bought in 2nd hand with 16-50mm kit lens, with around 2000 shots for about 350$. In the past i had 5 DSLR´s. But now with the A6000 it is absolutely awesome, the size, the performance and the aids to help manual focusing those awesome legacy lenses, simply astonishing. I´m in love with it. Keep up with the good work :)
@@ariqkamil571 The previous owner probably gave the number of shots taken up to that point, from checking the SD card originally used. For instance, I've had my a6300 for about a month and this is the last file on it: DSC00832.ARW (a RAW file, I generally shoot RAW+JPEG). See the last three numbers? That's 832 shots total.
@@AlexRamosDrTaz That's not the most accurate way to know the shutter count. There are various sites that allow you to upload a RAW file and their software analyses the metadata embedded in the file and will give you an accurate shutter count. Google.
Watching in 2020. Thanks this helped me to decide on Sony 35mm f1.8 for my A6400. Returning my Sigma 30mm 1.4 healf heartedly because I picked it up for $230. Sadly I notice the lack of OSS even on my gimbal (webill lab).

your videos are very good, I especially like the portraits of your wife and the other picture they are so helpful in determining the quality of the lens
Hi! Nice review! Sincerely, I prefer the Sigma 30 image. However, having to do mostly wedding video the question is: in the AF-C the engine is noisy and it feels a real problem for recording a good sound if you do not have an external microphone? I just bought ART 18-35, it's fabulous but I think I'll give it back to this problem (in addition to being very heavy and unbalanced forward). What do you suggest me? Thanks so much!
Your videos are great and down to earth! I have the Sigma 19mm and because of this video I ordered the 30mm. I have been a Nikon guy for years but have been using the a6300 for awhile and love it.
Which one would you recommend for low light handheld shooting? The sigma has a bigger aperture but no OSS. Or would I be able to shoot at a fast enough shutter speed and still get plenty of light?
I think the golden combo would be a6500 zeiss24 1.8 and sigma 30 1.4 for a real 35 and 50 mm FF feeling :). Also would be interesting to know about if the IQ is not even better on the a6500 considering it has a better sensor mmmhhh..
I'm looking at this vid a bit later, owning an a5100 and need a prime for less light, street photography and not having to start with zooming the moment I start the camera. I never use manual focus or do much else than auto mode honestly. Size is not a dealbreaker but important to me. Sony or Sigma? (perfect for me would be good qual lens at ca 35mm equivalent but seems impossible in a reasonable budget)
Hey man, great videos I've watched aost all of your videos to help me with choosing the right lens for my upcoming camera. Apart from the kit lens I've been thinking about the sigma 30mm 1.4 that's pretty great but with the new 16mm 1.4 coming out I'm not sure. I've also considered the Sony 85mm 1.8 but honestly don't know. So basically, what would be a good portrait, landscape lens for a beginner like myself? Coupled with the Sony a6500
I have the sigma, since I use it on an a6400 it doesn't focus well from f1.4 to f2.5, I've been thinking about buying the sigma again, but I don't want to risk the focus failing.
Thanks, is really expensive so maybe it deserve a good review/comparition with what is today the sharper one, the sigma 1.4 contemporary....I think. Is a nice lens since you get a real 35 mm focal view ...
Nice comparison video! It was well done and arranged nicely. I love my a6000 with the 35/F1.8 and 16-70/F4. Are you planning on getting the a6500 and doing a comparison?
Love the info. I am right with you on this comparison and your others on the kit lens 16-50mm vs. the Zeiss. I have a question as I am a beginner with a Sony A6500 looking for a good prime street/all around lens for group shots, etc. I have the following lenses: Sony 16-50mm kit Sony 30mm macro Sony 50mm 1.8 Sony 55-210mm Rokinon 12mm I have been looking at the Sigma 30mm 1.4 but some talk about its good for close but not distance, the Sigma 30 2.8 is better or the Sony 35mm. Obviously I am in the budgeting category. What would your recommendation(s) be? Thank you.
The sigma 30mm 1.4 is a great lens, but I still think the Sony 35mm F1.8 is a better buy because of AF, OSS, and the smaller size. If you buy the Sony 35mm for $400, you should sell your Sony 50mm for $250 or so. I dont see a reason to keep both. That way you are spending $150 more, not $400 more...
Did you shoot the photos with a tripod? I just take photos (no videos) and I´m not sure if I should go with the sony lens because of the stabilisation. I like the Image quality of the sigma a bit more but I´m still not sure about what is more value: the bit better quality vs. the stabilisation
I bought the 35mm but I'm not satisfied about it's sharpness. It is behind my 35mm Nikon DX..... Could be a right choice to buy a Sigma 30mm? I own the 56mm and it's a very good lens....
This is the only camera guy on yt where I dont get bored and switch videos. Hes so informative and straight to the point.
He shows pictures instead of filming himself.

I agree 100%, super interesting to watch and listen to, and focuses on Sony compatible stuff which is a big plus for me.

Nobody will see the less saturation (which, I like and you can anyways add more saturation in your picture profile in camera),
BUT I do not want to stay and correct barrel distorsions. I want to send the pictures through wi-fi.
And usually, my sister in law wants the pics copied on her HDD, as well, before we leave.
So, I think I would go for the Sony...
Will the Sony 35mm F1.8 work with Sony A7C full-frame camera?
In terms of lowlight. Which one to chose? Is the Sony better in lowlight even though it is 1.8 since it has OSS?
I would love to see more low light tests as my main reason for buying the sigma would be the 1.4 f. I have the Sony 50mm 1.8 and it is great but for shots at weddings or dance halls I'm wondering if the 1.4 can get me to the point where I can get away with less flash photography.
Sigma 30mm vs viltrox 33mm, which one would you choose?
Years ago I bought the Sigma for EOS. With the adapter it becomes even clunkier. Time to upgrade?
Another great video, love your videos.
I also have a A6000 that i bought in 2nd hand with 16-50mm kit lens, with around 2000 shots for about 350$. In the past i had 5 DSLR´s. But now with the A6000 it is absolutely awesome, the size, the performance and the aids to help manual focusing those awesome legacy lenses, simply astonishing. I´m in love with it.
Keep up with the good work :)
how do you know it has been took a photo arrounf 2000?
@@ariqkamil571 The previous owner probably gave the number of shots taken up to that point, from checking the SD card originally used. For instance, I've had my a6300 for about a month and this is the last file on it: DSC00832.ARW (a RAW file, I generally shoot RAW+JPEG). See the last three numbers? That's 832 shots total.
@@AlexRamosDrTaz That's not the most accurate way to know the shutter count. There are various sites that allow you to upload a RAW file and their software analyses the metadata embedded in the file and will give you an accurate shutter count. Google.
@@p0rt0b0y You're right, thanks.
Should work on a7ii?
The price point for both lenses in my country is similar, which one would you suggest?
Watching in 2020. Thanks this helped me to decide on Sony 35mm f1.8 for my A6400. Returning my Sigma 30mm 1.4 healf heartedly because I picked it up for $230. Sadly I notice the lack of OSS even on my gimbal (webill lab).
Nice comparison, you help me decide which one I'm going to buy next week. Thanks!
Only using them for video. Does the SIGMA still 'barrel' in video??
Hi there, appreciated if you could have a comparison between Sigma 16mm F/1.4 and Sony 35mm F/1.8.
Thank you.
hi ......thx for video i have a7iii can i use the sigma 30...just direct.....?
Yes, correct.
Hi ! Is the sigma 30mm more sharp than the Sony 35mm? And IS it a pb the sigma IS no stabilized ? (Taking photos with hands), thank you
which camera you used to test with the lenses?
Simply and alway best review!!
I came back to this channel kinda everyday to make i dont miss a new vids loll.

your videos are very good, I especially like the portraits of your wife and the other picture they are so helpful in determining the quality of the lens
Thanks! I am glad you enjoy them.
I’ve already ordered a sigma 30mm 1.4 and waiting
Thanks a lot for the in detail review 👍👍
Very nice detailed review. It was really helpful. Thanks.
Your videos are great and down to earth! I have the Sigma 19mm and because of this video I ordered the 30mm. I have been a Nikon guy for years but have been using the a6300 for awhile and love it.
That's awesome! I just got the 30mm F2.8 myself just to check out and see how good it is. Video to come.
Whats impressive about the 30mm 1.4 is its maxium aperture is actually useable. It has great sharpness both at the center and edges.
can you compare it with Zeiss Touit 32mm f/1.8?
which Sigma lens is better. this one or the 30mm F2.8? thanks a lot
I havent tested the 2.8, but the f1.4 is one of, if not THE, sharpest lens you can buy for E-mount.
Which one would you recommend for low light handheld shooting? The sigma has a bigger aperture but no OSS. Or would I be able to shoot at a fast enough shutter speed and still get plenty of light?
The OSS of the Sony outweighs the extra bit of light from the Sigma.
TechnologyMafia Appreciate the reply, I'll probably get the Sony.
On a tripod and live streaming, which one is the best sigma 30mm 1.4 or SONY 35mm 1.8?
What autofocus setting do you use on your camera?
What about flare and aberrations? Plz
I’m interested in purchasing the Sigma 30mm F1.4 for my Sony A6100. Should I buy this lens if I already own a Sony 50mm F1.8?
is the sigma good for video? the focusing?
How is the focusing on the sigma compared to the sony? I plan to do continuous auto focus for video...
This video needs a 2024 update with the A6700
Very useful overview. Great! Thanks a lot!
for video is the sony oss make a big differance for stabilization?
Yes it does
Any chance you could review Sigma 30mm vs Zeiss Touit 32mm on a6500?
I think the golden combo would be a6500 zeiss24 1.8 and sigma 30 1.4 for a real 35 and 50 mm FF feeling :). Also would be interesting to know about if the IQ is not even better on the a6500 considering it has a better sensor mmmhhh..
Hi, sorry for the question, but could you compare sony kit lens with sigma 30mm 1.4 at the saem apertures, please?
I did in a few shots, but the short answer is the Sigma 30mm is a lot sharper.
@@ArthurR thank you so much!
Because I saw no much different from kit lens and sigma 19mm.. but this one is on different segment..
Will Sigma 30mm F/1.4 be compatible for Canon full frame camera or its for APS sensor only?
hey , just bought an a6000 , it will arrive in 2 days , and watching your videos for over a week (: , nice job ! keep going (:
Would like to see something of the sony zeiss 24 1.8, there are near nothing on youtube. If you get it, can you compare it with the sigma? thanks.
I'll add it to my list of video ideas!
Thanks, is really expensive so maybe it deserve a good review/comparition with what is today the sharper one, the sigma 1.4 contemporary....I think. Is a nice lens since you get a real 35 mm focal view ...
Can the 35mm 1.8 DT SAM also be used on an A6000? The price is way cheaper than the SEL one... Unless paying double is really worth getting the SEL
I have the following lenses:
Sony 16-50mm kit
Sony 30mm macro
Sony 50mm 1.8
Sony 55-210mm
Rokinon 12mm
I have been looking at the Sigma 30mm 1.4 but some talk about its good for close but not distance, the Sigma 30 2.8 is better or the Sony 35mm.
Is this ok to sony a3000?
What lenses can I use for sony a3000?
Hey, could you do video comparison between sony 24mm 1.8 and sigma 16mm 1.4?? Thanks
Great review man!!!
What keyboard is that?
I bought the 35mm but I'm not satisfied about it's sharpness. It is behind my 35mm Nikon DX..... Could be a right choice to buy a Sigma 30mm? I own the 56mm and it's a very good lens....
Is this counted as a wide angle lens? I love taking photos of scenery but with my 16-50mm lens its really limited
Has anyone used both lenses before? Would you say oss with an a6300 makes a huge difference?
How is this Sony lenses for video?
Did I miss any mention of the OSS with the Sony? Seems like that should be a significant plus.
Are you using the sony 35mm in this video? There seems to be more hunting then usual.
Can you do a Sigma 30.14 vs Rokinon/Samyang 35 1.2 comparison? Do you have any experience with the Rokinon?
Hi dude. I'm planning to buy a6400 with Sigma 16mm f1.4., is it good for vlogging?
