I agreed with you, most RUclipsrs recommended 50mm because 50mm is the 'king' but they don't mention about equivalent focal length and they osho don't know their viewers use APSC. And I feel like being cheated by them. But now I don't care about gear anymore. I use what I have. Of course 50mm on APSC is like way too much zoom (75mm maybe) but when you get used to it, you know how to handle that situation.

The sigma 30mm is my favorite lens! It's been my go to photography lens. I was one of those beginners who bought a 50mm lens since that's what everyone recommended. Wish I never did and just saved for the Sony 18-105mm lens. Would have been much happier with that .
@@JasonVong totally agree. This was a great explanation. Explaining the difference how lenses perform based on if you use full or apsc makes a huge difference for people
Thank you! I have been saying the same thing for years. You explain exactly why I feel the same way! I shall share this whenever this discussion comes up again!
The 35mm & 50mm lenses have a different compression and depth of field characteristics, so it doesn't matter what size sensor you put on the back of them they will always look different, the only thing your doing by putting on a different size sensor on the back is the amount that your cropping in, Field of view and compression/ depth of field are still different, that's why when people use Medium format they say it has a certain look! that's because you are using longer focal lenses say 110mm to get a similar field of view to a full frame 80mm filed of view. but its not the same compression/Look, its a different look.
I disagree with the concept of moving, walking to get your photo would make you a better photographer. It depends. Many People forget that the standpoint changes and if your motiv needs you to say where you are and shoot the photo with a 200mm it would not help to walk with a 35mm towards that motiv to full the frame with it. Like in life, your standpoint decides.
I own the Sigma 30/1.4 and the Sony 35/1.8 . Both are great, but have to give the nod to the Sony due to the OSS. I just did the math for the conversion to full frame. 45mm for the Sigma and 52.5mm for the Sony close to the "nifty-fifty".
"Oh there it is, there's the milk." good way to prove a point. Great video, thanks Jason. I always enjoy, and learn from, your work. Great little lense too. I have Meike version - 1.4,manual focus - for my a6000 and a6600.
Thanks for this video. I borrowed an A6000 from my friend with several lenses and the first time I used it, it had the Sony 35mm attached. With absolute beginner skills at 'manual' cameras, the results of the first few test photos were very satisfying. Then I took the kit lens out to play, but could see it was kind of 'meh' when I uploaded them on my computer. I always used compact cameras or mobile phones to take pictures and to be able to play around, figure out the trinity with this camera and the 35mm and get such detail is so nice. When I decide to get my own APS-C, I will consider the 35mm as the 2nd or perhaps even the first lens along with the body.
I totally agree, I had a 35 on my first camera which was an apsc and loved it. Then when I moved to a full frame I purchased a 35 and hated it as then remembered why! It's the 50mm look as you explained. I got me a 50mm now and it's 😍😍😍
The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 was the first lens I bought with my a6300, I even skipped the kit lens. It's been great ever since, but man I'd love to test the Touit line of lenses!
lol @ tunnel vision gag. but couldn't agree more, man! i started with the 50mm on a Canon 60D and that was my only lens for 2 years. And the whole time, I've always felt it was tight AF.
Very informative. But one small note : You are referring to using 35mm FULL FRAME lens on a apsc body. Now a days you get a ton of native apsc lenses of various focal lengths, including 50mm WHICH STAYS 50 mm. Small note, pl
I am referring to both 35mm lens designed for APS-C & FF. If you're using an APS-C body, you have to take the crop factor into consideration regardless. Check out this excerpt from B&H on the APS-C 50mm lens - "Enjoy a near perfect portrait-length perspective on your APS-C E-mount camera with this black E 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens from Sony, *which provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.*"
I really appreciate this video. I ordered a new Sony 35mm 1.8 OSS off ebay for $225 for my ZVE10. I felt like I should get it over the Sigma 30mm 1.4 b/c I already have the Sigma 56mm and the Sigma 16mm. However, I recently bought the Sony 55-210 and noticed how much the OSS helped me - and especially when doing little video clips! So I'm thinking to use this Sony 35mm to get me into video more - maybe even sitting on a Crane M2S since it's so lightweight, or just with the OSS for handheld.

I watched your previous videos on using a 50mm lens on an apsc camera so I knew to expect that it will be a tighter shot vs how it should be on a full frame camera. I managed to get the sony oss 50mm 1.8 for such a good price. I looked at the 35mm oss but it was just not in my budget. We'll see how I feel about the 50mm once I can use it outside. So far I've only been doing indoor portraits and I'm really liking the results.
People often recommend 50 mm as it is cheap. On APS-C it is a portrait lens. I think the pest general purpose lens is 35 mm on full frame of 22-24 mm on APS-C. The s called normal lens or 50 mm is IMO way too tight in many cases. 35 mm is a good choice for Nikon but Canon does not have one for APS-C (except as Macro)
I’m new to your videos and you’re already my man for photography my question is , I have a kit lens... should my prime lens be the 35mm or the 85mm! I focus on night shots, street shots, and portraits. Hope to hear back soon !
Interestingly, a 50 was/is rarely in the bags of photojournalists, even in the days of primes. 50's were packaged with almost every film SLR, and it was a great way to start, but it was a focal length that photographers who had access to multiple lenses kind of just left on the shelf. Wides and telephotos just had more of an impact to the eye, I guess I'd put it. And many National Geographic photogs covered the world with a small bag holding a couple of Leica rangefinders, a 21, a 35 and a 90. Of course, they needed an extra-large bag to carry six months worth of Kodachrome, lol.
I find 35mm (50mm focal length) is too tight thus i’m settling at 27mm (40mm FL) on my fujifilm cameras. Not to wide as the 35mm FL or too tight as the 50mmFL
For a change you showed actual street photography instead of people. That alone made me like this video. Question : I am looking for a gift for friend. She is mostly into wildlife and birds but also likes to do the odd portrait or food picture, mostly indoors. Should I go for the Nikon 35mm for this purpose or the 50mm. She uses a D500, APS-C. I infer 35mm from the video, but just confirming
my first lens is a 50mm and that was like year 2014 that I bought it and i dont mind that it's a bit tight when it comes to framing my 2nd lens is my fave 85mm for portraits.
I disagree with you, it is a crop sensor really but the focal length is the same as we talk about optics, with the 35mm you would have to get closer to the subject and the thing with a not so tight lens like the 35mm it would still distort the face and other things, i still think the 50mm and the 85mm are still better options and you can achieve better looking results on those focal lengths
I wish this video was out when i first started shooting with my a6000, i didn't figure out the "50mm" look on apsc until i upgraded to my a7ii but i leaped a lot during that time so not all bad. Also another lens id recommend is the sigma 30mm 2.8 DN Art. its a great lens, very sharp, and has some nice bokeh. I'm sure it can be found pretty cheap on eBay
I am SO CONFUSED! Is he talking about the 35/50mm range on an aps-c camera or the full frame? because on the aps-c 35 = 50 and 50 = 75. Which one is it???
I have two lenses for my sony A6400 a sigma 30mm f1.4 and a vintage canon fd 50mm f1.8 but my favourite is still the 30mm.....thanks for the feature tho.
Awesome video man! I forgot to post my settings/camera when I posted my 35mm photos on your fb post. Do more of these if you can. I've got some epic footage filmed on the Sigma 56mm at Zumba Beach in Malibu. If you search "Shine Your Light A6400" on RUclips you'll see it. Welcome to use some of the footage if you're ever doing a 50mm (even though it's 56mm) video in future. I have the 4k files. Thanks for the informative video!
They say the 50mm is cliae to what the human eye sees not in the sense of angle, but in regard to objects relative size and position towards each other. It's a common misunderstanding and admittedly something that puzzled me for a long while too.
Already have one, and the best one in that focal length or in any for Sony/Fuji apsc. Zeiss Touit 32mm f1.8. It is costlier than my a6000, but best value of money for the results it gives, worth every penny. It may sound expensive, but is cheaper than any great Zeiss, RF, L or RF mount full frame 50mm lens, for similar results. That's a steal at this price. It is so sharp, that cropped images can outclass 55-210 zoom. Colour rendition is marvellous and is sharp corner to corner even at f1.8, with no or unnoticeable distortion. I use it along with Sony 50 f1.8 OSS, another sharp lens. Latter for portraits and low light shots. Else it is Zeiss Touit logo hiding my a6000 brand all the time. I will prefer it then to have a cheap Chinese made manual focus 35mm on a6600. (Sony 35mm f/1,8 OSS can substitute both lenses if budget matters, with just a fraction of loss in image quality, still better than others).
awesome! You might be the first that I'm hearing who actually own a touit lens! Very nice! I've borrowed it and quite like it a lot though the focusing sound is pretty loud
I agree! I didn’t use my Canon 50mm so much since the field of view was too narrow. Just bought a Sigma 30mm for my Canon M body and it’s much better 👍
great vid , if i'm going out for the the day , i usually take 3 lenses with me , usually the 50mm , the 75mm- 300mm , & a 28mm which i use for macro , which i do alot of , with my canon 200D camera , & of course a bar of chocolate haha .
Been debating sony 85 1.8 or Zeiss 40 f/2 for first lens after kit lens. I'm not a beginner I've been shooting for 9 years as an amateur with Olympus e-420 and their kit lens . Such a hard decision
I’m a new beginner & I have a Sony NEX7 that I recently brought for $300 like brand new with the 18-55mm kit lens I am not into photography I just want to record & stream videos on RUclips & my question to you is do you think that Neewer lens will be fully compatible with my Sony NEX7? I ask because I don’t want to spend over $400 for the Sony SEL35F18 35mm f/1.8 Prime Fixed Lens that Amazon sells
I’m eyeing Meike 35mm F1.7 - do you think it’s still also good as prime lens? I’m just new about learning photography. My camera has a crop frame.

I got the new Sony 35mm and it’s a great lens, I also need a 50mm but I think Sony has to release a new better 50mm imo.. something in the design-style and quality like the new 20mm G.
I really needed this video when I first started using my Nex 5T years ago. I liked my 50 1.8, but I got frustrated sometimes with how tight it was. But I've definitely upped my photography knowledge since, not just my gear.
@@misaalanshori Don't feel dumb. That is a common issue here on RUclips. A lot of these talking heads (that term sounds rude, but no disrespect intended - big Jason Vong fan) fail to clarify whether they are meaning full-frame or crop-sensor, regardless of what they are talking about at the time. You're left to assume. I tend to assume that they're meaning full-frame. When Jason uploaded his video last year about why he does not recommend the 50, I honestly did not even click on or watch it, because I already owned my A7R III with the Zeiss 55/1.8, and it just felt clickbatey by way of being a contrarian due to the general consensus that 50's are a great way to go.
I LOVE these people that try to tell you what things should be based on THEIR opinion. Who the heck are YOU to tell me what my second lens should be??? Grow up.
A question outside the Video's topic: when Weebill S is connected to a6400, the face detection autofocus is lost. Is the same issue present with a6600?
Hey great video. This clears alot of my doubt. I have a question for you. I saw one of your video where you recommended 75mm lens. I am sure it was for full frame camera and I really like the results 75mm produced in that video. Now, if I get 50mm and I have a Apsc camera, so I will achieve almost same results as to what 75mm gives on full frame or am I missing something. I am still a beginner so a bit confused.
I’m planning to get the a6400 for video and photo. Through research I planned to get the 17-70 Tamron. And was considering the 16mm or the 35mm. I planned to do real estate. So Initislly thought 17-70 and the 16mm. But now I think 17-70 and then 35mm. What do you think? Or should I skip the Tamron. And get a 16mm and 35mm?
I had a 24mm (I returned my 35mm for this. Too tight) and a 50mm lens on my 650D. Now I have a 35mm RF on my EOS R and loving it! My 50mm is collecting dust now.
I have a Sony ZV-E10 camera with Sony 11mm f.8 lens for landscape videography I need a lens with blurry effect for real estate hosting video please suggest which budget lens should I buy like Viltrox 35mm or 50mm, Sigma 30mm or tamron 17-70mm zoom lens ?

I got a meike 35mm 1.4 and it's just amazing
35mm is the first lens of mine. I love it
I disagree with you, it is a crop sensor really but the focal length is the same as we talk about optics, with the 35mm you would have to get closer to the subject and the thing with a not so tight lens like the 35mm it would still distort the face and other things, i still think the 50mm and the 85mm are still better options and you can achieve better looking results on those focal lengths
Which is better for that vintage type look?
This question is for anyone. Would you recommend getting a cheap 35mm for my EOS M body or get a Viltrox speedbooster (already own the 50mm)?
Thank you so much for this wonderful video. Would taking photos with a Fujifilm X100 series camera give me the same “50” mm
type of view?
I have two lenses for my sony A6400 a sigma 30mm f1.4 and a vintage canon fd 50mm f1.8 but my favourite is still the 30mm.....thanks for the feature tho.
thanks for helping out! :)
@@JasonVong you're welcome🤙🏼✨
I pretty much ONLY use my kamlan 50mm lens on my a6000, I have a 28mm, which is close enough to 50mm full frame, and I never use it for some reason.
Love your videos! I've been watching for a while. My focus is automotive video and I'm trying to figure out my next body and lens purchase.
Considering that f1.8 on aps-c equals f2.7, how does it compare to a full frame for portraits in low light?
good comedy and good info thanks, im new to your channel but i have watched a lot of your videos, thanks
so what do you think
should I get the lens first or the camera ?
I bought this last week! Glad I didn’t wait until this video for or else I would’ve let a deal of only $300 slip away haha (sony 35mm 1.8 oss)
better Sony Objectif SEL-35F18 Monture E APS-C 35 mm F1.8 or ZEISS Touit 1.8/32 ? for A6600
Dig your videos Jason! What macro lens would you recommend for an A6400?!
For Sony a6600 which 35mm lens is best- Sony lens vs other brands lens..??
I really needed this video when I first started using my Nex 5T years ago. I liked my 50 1.8, but I got frustrated sometimes with how tight it was. But I've definitely upped my photography knowledge since, not just my gear.
Oh i thought you were talking about full frame lens... (35mm format)
I feel really dumb now haha
Grow up.
I currently have a Sigma 18-35mm (with mc-11) and the 56mm for my a6500. Should i sell my 18-35 and get the 16 and 30 version?
A question outside the Video's topic: when Weebill S is connected to a6400, the face detection autofocus is lost. Is the same issue present with a6600?
To any beginner, sell your zooms. Buy a 35mm en 85mm full frame! ✌🏻
I have the a6400 and sigma 16 1.4. Should I buy the sigma 1.4 30? or just go for the sony 1.8 35 for the smaller form factor?
Hey great video. This clears alot of my doubt. I have a question for you. I saw one of your video where you recommended 75mm lens. I am sure it was for full frame camera and I really like the results 75mm produced in that video. Now, if I get 50mm and I have a Apsc camera, so I will achieve almost same results as to what 75mm gives on full frame or am I missing something. I am still a beginner so a bit confused.
Thus far my favorite APSC lens of all time would be the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and my favorite full frame lens of all time would be the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8
And get a 16mm and 35mm?
sigma 30mm 1.4 or sigma art 35mm 1.4? besides price what other factors sway you to one or the other?
I had a 24mm (I returned my 35mm for this. Too tight) and a 50mm lens on my 650D. Now I have a 35mm RF on my EOS R and loving it! My 50mm is collecting dust now.
I wish my 2nd lens was the 30mm macro. It's not the fastest at 3.5, but you can get some dope macro shots.
its surprisingly a great macro lens! 3.5 is fine - fantastic for focus!
@@JasonVong I just bought it a couple weeks ago and loving it.
@@JasonVong you suck
I have a Sony ZV-E10 camera with Sony 11mm f.8 lens for landscape videography I need a lens with blurry effect for real estate hosting video please suggest which budget lens should I buy like Viltrox 35mm or 50mm, Sigma 30mm or tamron 17-70mm zoom lens ?
