Tip No. 6: don't drag up the shadows in Post too much it will always increase the noise drastically, even for ISO100. Tip No. 7 if it looks too noisy, just add grain for the vintage look. Show what you can't hide. (Or just add a slight faded look to the dark areas)
G'day Jason, as a former Associated Press news/war photographer, a 33 year veteran pro photographer, and never having had the choice but to shoot in anything other than manual with my Pentax k1000 which I got for my 12th birthday in 1978, I agree with everything you said. That was great advice, even when speaking about jpg. Because of your really grounded attitude I have just become a subscriber. Not that you will teach me anything, but I like the way you explain the fundamentals of photography. Keep up the good work mate and looking forward to viewing more of your videos👍
Some cameras handle dynamic range and hence can reduce noise much better than others. I have a friend who moved from Nikon to Canon as it suited his Bird Photography better (lenses / prices etc), another moved from Canon to Sony for the perceived better autofocus which was most important to him. I moved from Canon to Nikon about 10 years ago as I regularly shoot in low light and Nikon just does it noticeably better (we are all semi pro full frame shooters). I also own some Sony gear and the Nikon system is always first choice for anywhere where light may be an issue.
That short timelapse at 3:50 is absolutely sick! The slight bit of motion from the train adds a cool warping effect that would look like crap if faked in post.
Tip number 6, live with noise. Nobody is going to look at you photo at 1:1 zoom level. As long as your photo looks good globally, it's a good photo. With modern full frame cameras you can shoot with ISO 12800 with some noise reduction, the photo will still look good globally.
For a lot of situations I would agree, but not for all... For myself, I often shoot with an end goal of printing, and printing shows up every little defect. Especially noise.
Iv used a blank page or picture on my phone and raised the brightness. A little softer than the flashlight. Definitely helps. Literally everyone has a phone
All that about fast lenses is true. But, the depth of field will be minimal. If you need a long depth of field you'll still be down to f.11 or 16 on a tripod
So youre telling me that mm means metering! 🤯 I just switched to sony and seems like every day I learn something new. Great video man like always, youre like the sony guru lol 🤙🏼
Jason Vong lol Feel ya, I appreciate the honesty. 🙏🏼 its all about aperture priority, you get that popular instagramy bokeh and all you do is pick the aperture haha for real though why dont I see my lightmeter on live view on my a6400? Does it only show the mm values? 😊
I love your content and as a owner of sony a6400 and nikon z6ii I would love if you would consider shooting with multi brand of camera and lenses. And I admire your work 👍
I mind and I'm watching :) The best low cost FF camera you can buy is 5D mkII and for hard night photography like 2.8 lens or even 1.8 50mm at low cost -if you have other-.
I managed to shoot very acceptable low light exposures of Bastille night fireworks in Paris , with my NIKON D 7200 WITH 18-140 LENS using a tree as a natural stabiliser ( not sure if I used the self timer function or not ).( sometimes I utilise street lamps to stabilise my camera , if I'm not carrying a tripod with me at night)
regarding point 1: no. The answer to "how can i shoot quiet (see what i did there?) photos in an environment with little available light" cannot be "increase the amount of available light". That leads the entire endevor ad absurdum. At that point you might as well not even try. The point was to shoot LOW light pohotography, not night time photography in a well light environment.
I had never heard of ball pod until today lol, my favorite type of photography is low light and night shots but really don't like bokeh in most shots but hey where all different. I'm still learning as I go but got some knowledge. I got myself a Sony A7iii last month and loving it and saving up for a prime lens like a 24mm G Master but have taken good none flash hand hold at night with the kit lens. Very interesting video
Do a video on low light videography and the use of PP in lowlight shots to get minimal noise , I use the A7iii and get a hell lot of noise in the shadows , please consider doing a video on it !!!
I am new in photography and I just find your video in RUclips...many thanks great Tips...Will try to make Foto at night (that was always my nightmare LOL) will try it now...again Jason Vong, many thanks :) regards from Munich
Man you are so funny I love Photography and i think your tips are great but I honestly sometimes watch your videos just to have some good laughs. Keep it up! lol I salute you from Brazil! lol kkkkkkkkkkkkk( lol)
Hi ! New subscriber here & a very brand new photographer so knew that i dont know the logic of different lens, what kind of lens to use, how can you tell the difference of a lens, i would love to see a full video of cracking down details for lens for brand new beginners
Hi Jason, nice video. I do landscape and night long exposure city scape, and a bit of pet photography, just in the midst of changing gears, but having difficulty to decide which body to go with: 5D III, Sony 7R2 or S2. I sold my Canon APSC system. Thank you.
Do I mess with white balance too? Hardest part for me is remembering what everything does. Do you have reccomended settings that I can set on memory mode for my a6100 sony. Thanks a lot just started about a week ago 😆

I do like that you included the differences between ful sensor and cropped sensor.

That body flash ain't garbage. With DIY it is really a turn around thing and helps a lot for people who doesnt have a proper on body flash.
I’m new to photography and I browse RUclips daily and I can’t believe over the last few months I haven’t found your page! Amazing video!
This is like the Queen of videos about low light photography ive seen... tjank you A LOT!
Iv used a blank page or picture on my phone and raised the brightness. A little softer than the flashlight. Definitely helps. Literally everyone has a phone
And put a napkin in front to diffuse light! bahaha
Jason Vong only the pros are doing it 🤣
All that about fast lenses is true. But, the depth of field will be minimal. If you need a long depth of field you'll still be down to f.11 or 16 on a tripod
You need a fast low f stop 1.4 or 2.8 ( between) for moving objects! Works for me! Handheld!
Honestly the brief metering section was new to me. Thanks!
nice!
This video changed my life, literally. This is a turning point in my amateur photography brain!! Thank you SO MUCH!!
Learnt something new here, keeping Meter range around -0.3 - 0.0
Vong can't be wrong!
Tip #6 : buy a sony a7iii
If you can afford one
Tip#7 buy a Sony a1
I hope he also uses different brand of cameras. As we all know that sony is given as one of a hi-end cameras.
or even better an A7Siii
"You can't go wrong with Jason Wong!". Cool Icebreaker.
Ohh I love Din Tai Fung. Everytime I go to Malaysia, my first stop is to get some Siew long bao. Great video by the way!
OK, I'm ready for an a7Siii. Come on Sony!
So youre telling me that mm means metering! 🤯 I just switched to sony and seems like every day I learn something new. Great video man like always, youre like the sony guru lol 🤙🏼
hahaha! TBH, I didn't understand how to use my camera until 6 years(?) after owning a DSLR!

Ok, the word " ball pod " made my day.
For macro shot like food and portait, i think a professional flash with auto zoom, would do better with bounce light and diffuser. To my opinion.
(Fro Knows Photo voice) CAN'T GO WRONG...WITH JASON VONG **finger guns**
Have you published a video on how to get accurate focus in low light situations or shooting night skys?
Tip #1 Dump that Nikon lol. Great work buddy keep them coming.
hmm what's wrong with the Nikon ?
It was a joke to Jason being A Sony shooter, really nothing.
Great sense of humor
The switch pod is also fantastic @3:29

As always, great content. Been having a hard time with low light shots so this is great! Thank you.
Hmm...go with a ball pod? Or a very small tabletop tripod? Thoughts?
Do you have any updated videos for using the song A7R v at night ? Also what should your focus be when shooting at night at a concert center wide or ?
