    Pretty much any time I am shooting at night (in a city), I always use the exact same settings: 8 second shutter speed, F16 aperture, ISO 100. I will set the camera to these settings just as the sun is setting and then just wait patiently for the sky to get dark enough to give me a proper exposure with these settings. When the exposure meter shows that I am properly exposed, I hit the button (with a timer set like you suggested to avoid camera shake). It gives me a beautiful image every time!

    • @jaybrown4526
      @jaybrown4526 Год назад

      Have you ever thought of using a higher quality f-stop? Seems f16 would be a poor choice, especially under low light- given light refraction, softening and what not. Might try using say, f7.1 or f8, and then adjusting your exposure time accordingly. Image exposure results should be the same in theory, but your image will probably be much sharper since you'd be using a better quality f-stop.

    • @nathanbgerman
      @nathanbgerman Год назад +1

      @@jaybrown4526 Hmmm, I'd be willing to give your suggestion a try sometime. I tend to prefer F16 for two main reasons. 1. I like the star effect that it gives to city lights and 2. These settings usually give me still a little bit of light detail in the sky so you can see clouds and maybe a light glow from the sun below the horizon. If I were to lower the F-stop to something like F8, that would make the image twice as bright and therefore, would require me to wait longer into the evening for the sky to get darker. As the sky gets darker, I then lose those details that F16 gave me. At least, that's my way of thinking, but like I said, I'd be willing to try your suggestion sometime.

    • @badbeardbill9956
      @badbeardbill9956 5 месяцев назад

      @@nathanbgermanTheoretically, if you were to use F/8, you’d get 4x the light. Then adjusting your exposure time down to 2 seconds is a good first guess to get the same amount of light. Might be worth a try at least

    I like the way you deliver your subject matter, like this one. You make it look simple and yet adequately explained. This makes your video time just right. Not too long and boring, and yet not too short, thus missing some important details. I always look forward to watch each of your video releases. By the way, I use a Canon DSLR, so I hope you would incorporate instructions using this brand, even when you explain your instructions using a Nikon camera as the main example Looking forward to more of your videos, Paul!

    I am very happy I found this channel. Now, the photography does not look like a "wild beast" to me anymore. I have watched so many "training" videos from other RUclipsrs that were not understandable or confusing for a beginner like myself. Paul Farris explains everything with such clarity and with helpful tips. I am appalled (in a good way) how much I have learned for the past 40 minutes just by watching his three vids.
    P. S. I think the "dislikes" are left by some pro-photographers, who are afraid that Paul is giving out their true secrets :-)
