There’s isn’t a better photography channel on You Tube. Paul you make everything so accessible for budding photographers. Happy Christmas from Hertfordshire!
Quite simply the best teacher for beginners on the internet, not only talks to you in layman’s terms but actually shows you on two popular makes of camera. I am so glad I stumbled on you Paul two years ago as a complete novice, I attempted a shot of the moon and completely screwed it up, asked the question on my iPad and it led to your Vlog on YT on the subject. Haven’t looked back since and regard you as the “go to guy” for simple to understand advice. Have a great Christmas Paul and an even better new year 👍👌📷
Paul, I find myself going back to most of your videos for just about every tip you have given. I would like to thank you so much for making these videos and great tips. You have greatly improved my canon experience and how to take pictures. Thank you!
What a great Christmas present you gave us with this video. Paul, you explain things so brilliantly, easily, and sensibly. Keep doing what you're doing. You are a blessing.
Paul I appreciate revisiting some of the past ideas “low light” I have since updated to a mirrorless Z-50. Since I may not use my camera for several months it’s very nice to have a refresher.
I've been doing photography for years now (8years now) and I still enjoy your videos. Keep them coming. Thank you so much for sharing. Happy holidays to everyone!!!
I generally set up my digital camera to manual mode 1/60 second at f/2.8 with auto exposure. I dial in 1-stp under exposure and a three stop bracketing. This gives me one shot as the meter reads, on shot 1-stop under and one shot 2-stops under. Usually, one of these three will be perfect but, I can always do an HDR composite. The 1/60 second will allow hand holding and the f/2.8 aperture will will give a lower ISO.
I am very, very much a beginner at photography. I have tried reading books on all the settings and taking pictures, it was so complicated, frustrating, and way over my head. I found this channel when searching to take moon shots. All I can say is WOW, hands down the best i have found, absolutely love it. Thank you so much Paul for giving us beginners a place to go. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Hi Paul, you are a great teacher. You make my transition from a 35mm film camera to my new Canon R5. I agree with you, the display on the Nikon is much more intuitive. Happy Christmas, Andre
This is great, I'm a newbie with my Nikon and this videos helps a lot. I can't wait to take some pics this weekend when i take my kids to see some extravagant Christmas lights.
Thank you kindly David for your support and the "Super thanks", it is very much appreciated. Best wishes to you and your family, have a great Christmas. Paul @ Photo Genius 😃
Thanks for the tipes I'm off to shoot Christmas lights tonight! I love BNE and the Gold Coast! I visited several years ago from Canada and wish I could have stayed longer!!
Great tutorial. I have always struggled with shooting Christmas lights. After watching this, I have a renewed desire to give it another go. Merry Christmas!!!
Paul you have the best photography tutorials on RUclips, and I have watched tons of it. Thank you so much for the effort to put this together for us beginners. I just wish you were in the US and I could take one of your workshops. Thanks again!
Great advice! My SL3 250D has a night scene mode, that allows jitter free handheld photos. It takes 3 consecutive photos at high ISO and fast shutter speeds, then internally merges all three photos into one! Very handy.
I am watching this video again and taking notes. I'm photographing my 2 nieces tomorrow night at a place with Christmas decorations AND lights...so im going to try my best to do what i can. Each has a boyfriend, one is engaged for September wedding and the other has a 1 year old little girl. I hope i can do this, i tried several times and just could not do anything. I will have some help, but mainly i;m on my own. Thanks again for the info.
The same as always when I started subscribing to your channel. All your tutorials are easy to understand and not making it complicated. I am literally a beginner and haven't held my camera for more than 20 times but all your videos helps me a lot. Merry Christmas!
Hi Paul, another interesting and informative video, thanks for sharing again. ... and before I forget, thanks for another year of you sharing your knowledge, it is very much appreciated.
Another stellar class. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Headed down to Siesta Key for the Holidays getting out of Minnesota and I am looking forward to having the 50mm in my bag this year.
Great video - thanks! You might consider discussing the benefits and down-sides of using auto ISO for your nighttime photography. I do this with my 90D. The ISO range can be set so that it doesn’t exceed whatever value you decide on.
Thanks Paul, another well presented tutorial, clearly explained and whilst I'm not a novice, always good to refresh my grey cells, especially for some outdoor Christmas light displays etc. Have a good Christmas holiday yourself and thanks for all the RUclips stuff this year. I wish we had your temperature's here in the uk after a real icy blast from the artic !!
Absolutely love your channel! Your tips are always spot on and never complicated explanations. Happy Christmas, Paul! I hope you and your family have a great holiday and Happy New Year!!
Great videos and greetings from the UK 👍👍 Being an oldie I still remember being slightly limited by the ISO (ASA) of the 35mm film I loaded into my camera and using a cable release on Bulb setting It’s good understanding the relationship between shutter speeds and aperture Modern cameras are so clever it’s made “proper” photography much more accessible which is a good thing
Thanks Paul for sharing your experience with great comments....I always have difficulties in taking pics at night as they always come out too dark...I need to try different settings as you suggested & more practise.... cheers from Melbourne 😀
Thanks again for a terrific video. One question tho. Christmas lights tend to flicker on and off all the time. How would you go capturing them as long exposure would be all blurry?
The lights will only blur if the camera or lights move (fence the tripod), so the fact the lights are flashier is not a problem. Thanks for watching Paul.
When using my nifty 50mm in a mall or indoor environment, would you recommend using the lens hood? Best wishes & happy holidays to you and your family! 🎄 🎄
Merry Christmas Paul. Thanks for all you do. Your channel has been a huge help for this guy just getting to know my Canon T5i ,my first digital camera.
Thanks Paul, great videos, 👍, you mentioned to keep the shutter open longer at night, what about for a Christmas Parade at Night, when there’s lots of movement, won’t I get out of focus photos if I leave the shutter open long, like for a second or so ? I have a Christmas parade to shoot photos for tomorrow evening with my new Nikon P950, I won’t have much extra time to experiment. Thanks again.
Excellent video as usual, Paul. I’m not sure if you’ve already done a tutorial on time-lapses or not, but I would really like to see some tips on that. It’s definitely a weak spot for me. Your tl of the Christmas decorations going up & transitioning from day to night was very cool. And smooth! (I currently use a Nikon D7200, btw.) Happy New Year!
Hi Paul, Love your channel and the way you present information in a clear easy to understand manner. I have a Nikon D5100 DSLR camera and would like to see a review on this model on your channel. This doesn't seem to be a very popular model based on the lac of attention it receives on photography channels channels like yours. I see lots of information presented on the Nikon D3000 series cameras but virtually nothing about the D5000 series models or higher. Are these models inferior or less desirable in some way? I would like to know your thoughts and comments about these cameras. Love your channel. Tom
In addition i would say, yes a prime lens can improve low light performance, but i would rather go to something like a stabilized 17-55 2.8 lens or even a Sigma 18-35 1.8, the standard zoom range is something i dont want to miss, and its a joy with a 2.8 aperture making low light photography handheld very easy which is on the typical kit lens sometimes an issue with F4 to 5.6 I used for years full frame and a 50mm 1.4, definately something you cant compare to APS-C and a 2.8 aperture in low light, but especially modern APS-C cameras handle high ISO well enough to make 2.8s just fine, no need for primes unless you are really looking for a pleasent portrait or macro lens. Especially the few times photographing this chrismas time i barely took off the Canon 17-55 2.8, just a few times i used a 10-20mm lens for some wider, interesting scenes which was going off always very fast since its just a F4-5.6 lens and it annoys me heavily to use ISO 6400+ on APS-C
Perfect timing for this tutorial right? Completely opposite of what you taught me about moon photography so now I own the night. Only differance is here in the States we've got snow and the cold to deal with. Is there anything I should know about acclimating my camera to the freezing outdoors? CHEERS!!
Best photography channel by far thank you Paul for sharing your skills with us very easy to follow tutorials, for a beginner like me> Merry Xmas to you as well and prosperous new year 👏🙏
do you have cheat sheet set up cards for us novices?! i think if i had some setting on a card i would understand my camera better Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. Merry Christmas!

Great video. Easy and accessible explanations. You have a new subscriber 👍
is necessary to night mode for night photography? or you can use other mode?
I would prefer to use the cameras manual modes (as I did in the video) than the use the automated night mode.
Absolutely love your channel! Your tips are always spot on and never complicated explanations. Happy Christmas, Paul! I hope you and your family have a great holiday and Happy New Year!!

Hi, I’m coming to Brisbane in April to visit my son. Do you do walk about classes
What lens do you use on the Nikon? I've only got a 55-200mm lens on my Nikon D5600
Hi Paul, l have enjoyed and gained so much knowledge from your vids. l have what may be the stupidest question you have been asked, but here goes anyway. Is it possible to get closer pictures of the moon using extension tubes with a 600mm lens and if so, which extension tubes to use.

Great instructional technique and your integration of visual examples is first rate. Nicely done; however living in Canada it is still a 'leap' to look at Christmas lights with a palm tree :-) Especially when we are suffering through a cold snap keeping me inside watching videos instead of taking pictures. As good as my IS is, it doesn't account for shivering at -30ºC Yikes. Thanks again.
Thanks for the great feedback, hope you can get out again soon and take some pics, I cannot imagine how cold that must feel 🥶
Happy Christmas to you.
Paul.
One more idea: while it’s not a tripod, a monopod can be useful in reducing camera shake. I bought one last year to help my Christmas lights shooting.
