Christmas night photography

  • I’ve tried to photograph Christmas on many occasions but never quite achieved good results. You can get the classic stock photography of opening presents around the tree, you can go to Christmas markets to do photography but I always find that too cultured. So, this time I thought I’d try something different - Christmas night photography. I am pleased to say, this time I was really happy with the results!
My idea was to create night photography of London’s Christmas lights and what a beautiful setting it was. Join me as I walk around the areas of Regent Street, Oxford Street, Piccadilly Circus and find some great Christmas lights to photograph.

Loved the “instagram shot” and putting Adam in the middle was the icing on the cake 👍

Last year a group of tourists pushed themselves right in front of my tripod on New Bond Street and took pictures in turns forever. When they finished they did not let me take my shot, they had to discuss the photos first. And I was standing there for good ten minutes freezing. I am a patient kind of guy, I don't mind waiting for people to finish whatever they do, as long they are sensible enough to let me have my turn, but these guys seemed completely unaware of my predicament. I do have a strong trained voice, and I made them learn of the nice colorature of my tenor, and some colorful language I've learned since I moved to London. One guy flinched and looked like he was going to get a heart attack, poor thing. I think they were offended and walked away depriving me of their company.

I love how everyone in London takes photos. Here In South Yorkshire I'm nervous of getting my camera out in public yet but I'm sure I will eventually.
Some great inspiration there, I love them!

It’s great that you’ve got the central reservation there, to capture the two buses and lights above - fantastic shot! No wonder it’s popular for photos.

I've done a couple of sessions in London and I'm sure I spoke to you at Blackfriars next to the Millennium Bridge one night. It was great just after we were let out from lockdown, everywhere was nice and quiet, but last Christmas it was heaving, and I even walked into the Moroccan football fans celebrating in Piccadilly Circus after their WC win over Spain. As I come in from Sussex I guess I'll need to get used to the crowds, but still a good evening out, even if it's sometimes a little rushed to get home again.

I think the first shots you showed with Arron & the Subaru= the one with Arron looked better because you had more distance between you & the end of the street. Gave more of an alley or canyon look to it with the tops of the buildings leaning in. = wide angle lens perspective. Just my thoughts. Happy shooting & happy holidays.

Loved your shots! Many people indicate what focal length they are shooting a shot; however, I'm always confused if they are shooting full frame, or APS-C. I shoot APS-C and always have to do the math in my head assuming people are always referring to full frame focal lengths. Loved the video.

@@theschoolofphotography Thanks for the quick response. I figured you were using full frame. I'm considering going full frame but keep putting it off as my current setup seems to be working good for me. I need to focus more on composition and creativity. Great videos

Great idea of using SS mode and not manual... Auto ISO is most important and AWB AND Aperture mode. On my Sony Auto ISO also works in Manual. Also if you have Zebra function (+109) and a EV dial on top just reduce the the zebras yes a dark image but increase shadows to bring back - you will be able to get the light filament also. Some cameras like my A7iii has a AWB white setting this will help get rid of the blue cast in LED lights also the blue cast on the shadow side of say a white boat at sunset. Lastly nothing wrong with eyes or camera if LED lights are purple with age the yellow lens over the emeter degrades with excess cold or heat and age in storage.

London clearly isn't suffering from the electricity and energy crisis 😳 sadly here we don't have decorations over the streets. Only on the walking area in town.
I love to shoot such with F11 😊 Xmas just needs stars 😁
