    Greetings from South carolina! Could you make a video on how to photograph outdoor Christmas decorations because they are very big here.

    • @wolfamri
      @wolfamri 3 года назад

      Hey Bryan. Funny - one of our clients is Austrias biggest commercial christmas decorator (for malls, cities, etc.) so it would usually be rather easy. But since we are in lockdown, things are a bit different this year. I could go out as a photographer, but the malls are closed and other than that we don’t have the christmas decoration you have. But the process is very similar to the indoor tree, just wait for the so-called blue hour and a clear sky + snow if possible.

I said “I didn’t want Wolf’s video but I’ll figure it out” only because I didnt expect to have the opportunity to have snow and lights ...well. I used flash and didn’t like it and then used a slooow shutter speed. It came out ok with my tripod but I know my ISO would have saved me. In my country Christmas trees have candles on them. Not those boring light chains.
    And my main tool is the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 Art!
    Another important tool is a custom white balance.
    And I often leave (some of) the room light on to get better image quality and better shutter times.
    And I often get very good results.
    In the film days everything was much harder. The only way to get good colours (and I don't like black & white!) was to use several KB (Korrektur Blau) filters which would necessitate even longer exposures.

    • @wolfamri

      Beautiful! Surprising to hear that you have all real candles there. The color of real candles as temperature radiators is as good as it can get. I’m sure you have some great Christmas tree images.

    • @skakdosmer
      @skakdosmer 2 года назад +1

      @@wolfamri I think candlelight has a colour temperature around 1500˚ Kelvin, and my cameras don't have a setting lower than 2500˚. Mixing in some electric light helps a lot, but nevertheless I always set a custom white balance. I could get quite neutral colours that way, even without added electric light, but like you I prefer a slightly more red/yellow look.

    • @wolfamri
      @wolfamri 3 года назад +1

      If you want the branches to be lit, you need to add some light. Either ambient room light, or flash. I plan to deal with that in part 2. It’s a little advanced because you need to clor correct and maybe also add ND filters to not over expose.

    How to take good pictures of the Christmas tree during the daytime lights on?

    • @wolfamri
      @wolfamri 2 года назад

      Hey Jessica. I'm afraid that is very cumbersome. The daylight is overpowering the lights of the Bhristmas tree and you would have to set the camera for that daylight to not over expose the shot. So the lights will be hardly visible.
      The only chance would be to reduce the daylight (with blinds), or if you work very professional with ND gel filters sticked to the window from outside (but that's how the huge pro companies would do it if they needed a similar shot).
