  • I drive and review the brand new 2023 Dodge Hornet GT to determine if this small SUV is a solid buy or simply overhyped. This vehicle features the new hurricane turbo 4 cylinder engine that produces nearly 300 pound feet of torque and seems to punch way above it's weight. What do you think of the new Dodge Hornet?

I don't get how some Dodge people just want this vehicle to fail. It's vehicles like Hornet that helps Dodge give these people the very same vehicles they want. As much as we'd all like to see it, Dodge cannot continue to just make 800-1000HP Chargers and Challengers. It's a niche market for them and it doesn't meet CAFE requirements. You should want vehicles like the Hornet to massively succeed, even if it's a vehicle you're not interested in. This makes it easier for Dodge to design and build the vehicles that you want.
The people who are bashing this left and right aren't helping your own case and you're not the market Dodge is trying to get with the Hornet anyways.

These subpar models are what is called within the realm of Chrysler, throwaways. They are what they are. Cheap and highly profitable. Cost to build of the average Hornet based on an average medium is $31,000. To build this particular priced model costs the assembly plant $11,000. The rest is pure profit.

The viper, new Ram, and the reintroduction of the Hemi is what put Chrysler back into the game!!!
I appreciate your honesty and truly believe you're giving an unbiased opinion on these car's but the government and it's leadership has made its nearly impossible going into the future for car manufacturers to provide a freedom of choice!!!

Looks like a affordable, peppy replacement for the old PT Cruiser that you could also get a turbo 4 in. I would think it would have no problem keeping up with or passing traffic. The small turbo would make it spool up very quickly so that's why it feels so quick considering what it is. Decent mpg and able to haul some stuff and carry people seems like a win to me.
Thanks for posting it up and I'm sure there will be some folks tuning and modding them like they did with the first gen Neons back in the day. They definitely need a fun economical car for normal family type buyers and this is it.

The transmissions are another story. But if their anything similar to the 9 speeds they put in the darts. They will have them straightened out by now. The only issues I would be worried about is rust and electrical. But I know fca uses some of the industries best since the merger because they want good quality.

The GLH won't have the hurricane inline-6 because that's designed for RWD platforms...the Hornet/Tonale is based loosely on the FWD platform of the Jeep Compass...the transverse engine layout gives that away. GLH model's won't be a separate trim of the Hornet....instead it will be more like an option package on top of your choice of either the GT or R/T....think graphics, lowering springs, badges, wheels, and stage 1&2 tunes from direct connection.
P.S the stage tunes will be done on the hurricane inline-4 engines adding 20-30hp with each stage (insider news)

Though I prefer sedans, domestics just aren't making them anymore. While the Alfa Romeo fans are really upset that Dodge got this as it takes the thunder away from the Tonale, I understand its business. Every one Stellantis sells means more work for the factory that makes them and more profit for Stellantis. That means every Hornet sale helps keep more Alfas and Maseratis on the road in the future. I own a Giulia and I'd buy the Hornet over the Tonale because the Hornet looks more muscular AND I prefer the simplicity of the 2.0T drivetrain over the PHEV-only option in the Tonale. You can clearly see the "Alfa" in the Hornet interior----far above what you'd ever typically see in an American-designed Dodge, and it will handle well because Alfa never makes a vehicle that doesn't handle well. I think once "Dodge people" get their hands on the Hornet, get over their initial reluctance over its Italian origin, they'll see it is a great option for a fun, high-quality, everyday useful CUV that won't break the bank.

Well, they are smart to make the car base at $30,000. One of the reasons I feel the Dart failed was, it was too expensive out of the box when it was first introduced. I’m fine with Dodge making every day vehicles. That’s part of their history as well. However, I am not fine with them getting rid of the charger/challenger.

    • @ducktails1695

It also failed out of the box because it was initially only offered with a 6-speed manual transmission at first until they were able to get the 6-speed automatic out the door. It was also a very shitty 6-speed manual as well. I know because I owned one and I thought that it was the worst shifting manual transmission I've ever had.

I’ve read in several automotive publications that in terms of reliability, the Alfa Romeo Tonale (Dodge Hornet) is too new to have been featured in the 2022 reliability survey but as a brand, Alfa Romeo did badly, coming in 29th out of the 32 manufacturers included. That's below all the rivals and only Fiat, Land Rover and Jeep did worse.

Most of those reliability studies are regurgitated propaganda from Consumer Reports.......What I have found if you maintain your vehicles the way you are supposed to the less issues that will arise down the road....You would be surprised on how many people drive their cars all over Hell's Acres with their dashboard lit up like Macy on Christmas Eve for months on end and when the vehicle fails or breaks down they blame the manufacturer for their own stupidity. I bet the Alfa issue problems lie in the lack of dealership networks so it becomes hard to maintain their vehicles. Dodge has well over 2200 dealers in the US Alfa only has 134 Nationwide.
