The 5.7 Throwdown: Ruger-57 VS FN Five-Seven

  • Until recently, when the Ruger-57 started shipping in January of 2020, the FN Five-seveN was the undisputed pistol king of the 5.7 NATO caliber. Nothing else could even compare because, quite frankly, there wasn’t much to compare it to. Then Ruger came out with their new offering, and we’ve since seen 5.7x28mm firearms rolled out from both KelTec and Diamondback.
Luckily, I had a chance to test both the Ruger-57 and the FN Five-seveN in a side-by-side range test. There were certainly things I liked about each of them, and there were also a few surprises I found as well. That said, let’s dive into how these two firearms compare to each other.

Ruger has discovered that a small number of Ruger-57™ pistols may have right safety levers that do not meet our specifications and may be prone to cracking. In some rare instances, the internal "leg" of the right safety lever may crack or break, rendering the manual safety ineffective. If present, this condition may cause the manual safety to appear to be functioning properly when it is not. Although only a very small number of pistols appear to be affected, Ruger is committed to safety and is asking owners of Ruger-57 pistols to immediately perform a routine function check of the safety lever to ensure its proper operation and, if necessary, sign up for this retrofit.
Potentially affected pistols include any Ruger-57 pistol with a serial number of 642-26274 or lower (including all Ruger-57 pistols with a “641” prefix). If your Ruger-57 pistol is within this range (641-00000 to 642-26274), you should follow the inspection procedure outlined in the Safety Bulletin to determine whether your pistol requires a retrofit. Ruger-57 pistols with a serial number of 642-26275 and above are not affected by this Safety Bulletin.

I appreciate the honest review. There are a lot of people who hate on the FN. I mostly believe it’s because they cannot afford the gun so it’s easy to heat on it for them. Most of them have probably never shot or handled this firearm. The FN is heads and tails above the Ruger in build quality, reliability and looks. If you’ve never held this gun you have no idea what you’re missing out on and you just feel the quality when you hold it. There’s no jolts, jiggles like the Ruger has! There’s a reason why it cost as much money as it does. And there’s also a reason why it’s been around as long as it has and being in video games. It’s a work of art and makes an exceptional carry gun or home defense gun. It is extremely lightweight, reliable and has a great capacity.

You make this wild claim the Ruger is of much less quality but I have fired both and this simply is NOT true in any way. In fact the Ruger feels like an actual gun not a plastic toy. My R57 does not "jiggle" either? Where do you people get this stuff lol?

Also it’s not cheap but it’s cheap for what it is. Just like a century arms AK is $900, pricey but in the AK world is verryyy cheap. The bolt was mushrooming from being made from cheap metals. This is the same scenario for the FN vs Ruger. The FN has a chrome lined barrel which is good for not only longevity but also is recommended when you have high velocity rounds. The FN is also metal coated with polymer to reduce friction which allows less malfunctions. The FN also has better ergonomics, especially with the mag release and slide release when doing tactical drills. This is literally no different than choosing a Glock over a Taurus. I’d take Glock over that any day of the week. Also to mention Ruger has had recalls on their products and when doing side by side comparisons when shooting. It’s had more jams as well.

I like that the 57's shoot like a 22, there are high velocity rounds (2400 fps) that tumble. Seen impressive gel ballistic tests with large wound channels created. Accuracy is most important in incapacitating a threat. So being able to shoot like a 22 with low recoil, shooting flat is appealing to me. FN quality is important, the Ruger safety issue is a concern, so I would go with FN and pay the extra price. On my wish list.

As for the grip texture. Talon grips I am sure will be producing products for the Ruger. The Safety, it makes so much more sense to have a firearm that is traditional. The Five Seven has a bit of a odd learning curve. As for defensive purposes. Well I will stick with a 10mm or I own a FNH FNX Tacticool. Either one of those will hurt when they smack ya. And to be honest in a world of unpredictable human nature , the 9mm will get the job done.
Ammo prices for the 5.7X28. Sigh.. I am sure as more companies produce ammo the price will drop. Before with the lower number of FNH Five Sevens , many ammo manufacturers just kinda skipped over the caliber. So with limited manufacturers the ammo prices were at a almost frozen price range. The sights are much better on the Ruger and you may find night sights for these. Not really a option on the FN where you have to send it in to be drilled and have a tritium dot installed. Kinda silly in this day and age. The triggers is where I saw a difference. I kinda preferred the Ruger over the FN.
The slides. Well here is where I most certainly preferred the Ruger. It is just a much better design. The RMR cutout alone makes this a easy pick. Plus that Ruger customer service is absolutely hard to beat. Sorry to say I actually do not care for FNH"s customer support at all. They seem to want to help LE and Military contractors where civilians seem to bother them a bit.
And magazines. Ruger once again wins that race. FNH had some rather nasty issues with their magazines. The feed lips were cracking . When they came out with the MkII they finally addressed this issue. But for the people who purchased the first gen , they were just kinda out of luck.
When I watched a Ruger being tested out it had zero reliability issues so you must have recieved one that needs to go back. I know many folks who have run serious amounts of ammo through these Rugers with 100 % reliability.
FN makes fine weapons. They are the grand daddy of the 5.7X28 with no doubt. At the price these 2 pistols sell for the Ruger makes a whole lot of sense. Even though I own a FN Five Seven MkII I am interested and will purchase a Ruger 57.
The take down is the one area I will agree on. As for the mag release , Ruger will listen and change the design if it bothers many shooters. Like I said Ruger most certainly carry for all their customers and they really do listen.
There are some cool products out there for the Five Seven. Barrels that are threaded , finally some decent holsters that started to really come out when the MkII came out. I also believe you can get a Apex trigger installed?
I just feel Ruger really did update the 57 with many of the features people were trying to get FN to do. But FN just really didn't care and if anything they take a long time to redesign their products.
And they have a history of not supporting their firearms once a newer model or version comes out. The FNP is a fine example. When the FNX came out they basically didn't wish to support products for the FNP's.
I have to ask? Many Five Seven owners are on a bit of a disagreement on that saftey location. Why do you prefer it over a traditional safety? Almost all American companies who produce pistols incorporate a thumb safety of some sort. So when you transition to another firearm you don't have to retrain so much.
    Just curious.

The FN is clearly superior. I bought my FN Five seveN even after handling the Ruger model. The main points ill make are this, FN did mpi tests on the Five seveN's slide after 20k rounds and found microfractures and immediately were replaced with forged slides afterwards and the problem was solved. Add to this the fact that Ruger didnt use a chrome lined barrel on their model and I guarantee the Ruger will show throat erosion and barrel wear a long time before the FN does. The modularity that people speak of is there for the FN, largely in a bigger way. There are optics capable slide covers, suppressor height sights, threaded barrels, a purpose built suppressor specifically designed for this pistol, Apex triggers, and much more. People talking about putting 21 rounds in the Ruger's mag clearly havent seen the 30 round extended magazines for the Five seveN either. Im not taking anything away from the Ruger, I just believe that longevity wise, and quality wise......FN eats Ruger's lunch on this one.

    • @Patriot-rising
      @Patriot-rising 2 года назад +1

Actually they are not superior. Yes they have a long history but not without issues. Magazines alone have been debated and griped about. Feed lips cracking and the 30 rounders are a hit or miss. You either get some that work or don't and Pro mag has a rather jaded history.
Plus they are also a real hit or miss on their customer support. Ruger has a customer support network that is leaps and bounds above FNH USA.
Ruger started of very well. Metal magazines better controls. Heck even the experts say that the finger tip safety is really hard to get use to. It is so much different that the normal pistols out on the market. Ruger at least put a safety most shooters would prefer .
And do not knock Rugers quality as they too have made very reliable and stout firearms.
And at about half the cost. Plus if it wasn't for Ruger I would doubt that the interests in the 5.7X28 would have woken up. So to say the FNH Five Seven is superior is kinda off balance.
Oh and BTW I own a Five Seven MkII. I like it a lot but I am certainly liking the Ruger as well. I an sure I will own one soon.
And if they were superior I assure you their prices wouldn't be seriously dropping like they are.
And since you and I both already own a Five Seven we can certainly appreciate the fact that the Ruger is so popular that I am sure ammo prices will drop and other companies will be producing ammo as well.
This is my opinion and you do not have to agree. The Ruger 57 already has a real following and has almost halted sales on the FN Five Seven.

Then I started having FTF where I'd have to slap the bottom of the magazines for it to go into battery; this actually cost me a contest as apart of a CCW class, but that's just to illustrate the frustration. I didn't find similar issues online. Someone at a shop suggested it could be the magazine springs, but they all looked fine and the same. Someone else suggested it was because American Eagle bullets are thicker than the FN brand, but I find that hard to believe with it being a bottleneck cartridge. It just seems like from the lack of complaints that I had a weird lemon or something.

@@ScreechingPossum The FN Five seveN was made to shoot a very unique 5,7mm round, that had certain characteristics not seen on handgun ammo before. The round casing is not tapered towards the top like all other rifle rounds. What this means is that the empty casing does not "disconnect" from the breech like other rounds, which disconnect when moved ever so slightly because the casing is slightly tapered. The solution FN uses is to lubricate the casing with a very special lubricating compound that ensures the spent casing will disconnect when moved slightly, like other rounds. Initially, other ammo manufacturers didn't quite get this right, and many malfunctions were experienced as a result. It is also a problem when reloading. Using proper FN ammo results in a very small percentage of malfunctions, which could have been caused by a number of reasons, including extraction issues. Stick to FN ammo and you'll have very few malfunctions.

Ruger quality tho is very poor, after 40 rounds the slide looks like it's 60 years old, the drilled and tapped holes in the slide had terrible threads and had to be re drilled and tapped, the factory sights had been set as far right as possible and the trigger safety is the worst I've ever used. That being said once all of that is fixed I can out shoot the FN. Ruger could do a lot better in the quality department and the quality inspectors need to up their game.

What a crock of sh#t dude lol. I've shot over 2k rounds thru mine and looks just as new as the day I picked it up new... You need to clean your GUNS. Rugers quality control is impeccable. It feels like a real gun rather than a plastic toy.

Watch Paul Harrell youtube - he said this might have a place in a civil disorder situation because of high capacity

The recall was for a small batch of pistols, the defect is easy to check for, and STILL only results in a discharge if you pull the trigger. And honestly I'd rather a company do a recall and take the heat than do nothing, or hide or deny the problem exists- like some companies.

Well for those of us who have the FNH Five Seven (I have the MkII) have enjoyed them for years. Even as much as people continued the hate , we didn't care as we knew what they can and cannot do. Everyone who shot mine wanted one but not at the $1265.00 that I paid for mine. But I went a bit crazy and ordered several magazines for mine .
Now that Ruger has the 57 in a more affordable package people have changed their tune and are purchasing these right up. I had to kinda laugh as people said "why not just get a .22 mag? It is basically the same and at less than half the cost at least" . Simple answer , I didn't care and I do own a few .22 mags .
But the awesome part is ammo should start falling. And the prices on the new and used FN Five Seven have also seen a price reduction .
I will be purchasing the Ruger 57 anyways. I actually love the caliber . Hate the ammo costs how ever.
There are some Ruger haters out there. I am most certainly not one of them. I have been purchasing Rugers for over 40 years and have a few safes with many Rugers. From the Red Labels to the Number 1's .
Ruger builds fine firearms that are stout and priced somewhat well. And they have one of the finest customer service I have ever had the pleasure to deal with.
I am hoping to see some rifles and carbines produced for the 5.7X28.
What I would consider a awesome setup is actually with their Marlin side. Since the rounds basically have the Hornady V Max with polymer tios , they should be able to produce maybe something quite wonderful. Like a Marlin model 39 lever action. It would be outstanding.
    Thank you for the review.

I love Ruger revolvers, I own six, but the SR22 I used to own was the worst gun ever. Even after a trip to the factory it still jammed constantly and fired knuckleballs even with a new barrel so I got kinda turned off by Ruger semi autos. I only own one plastic gun, a CZ P07 that I received in a trade with my son when he traded me several guns for my motorcycle. I also only buy guns with hammers. I'm old so that may be why.

Go see my video on the Ruger MP 57 conversion. Then tell me which is best. Ruger is what I call semi-modular. Most have no clue it's modular at all. Turned mine into a gun comparable to a MP7. I'm going to pair it with an FN 57 for a hip gun soon maybe and have both. But if ya want choices.. ruger blows FN out of the water
