All of the bullets in this test were designed to penetrate and expand in human flesh. That they did not overpenetrate is a safe way for bullets like this to perform. Gotta remember, your cast iron isn't 'secure' it's loose, meaning there will be reverb/recoil when the cast iron is hit. And as others have mentioned, after each shot you need to replace the pans that were damaged.
Your results aren't 100% accurate. Each round would weaken the the pan. Any pan impacted by a round should have been replaced before the next caliber test. The difference may be negligible but, from an experiment perspective replacing impacted pans would give more accurate results. The pans would also need to be stationary. The pans' movement changes the exit velocity and may even prevent penetration.

Not if they're standing far enough back. Bullets can only ricochet if the angle isn't too tight. It would be impossible for the force of the bullet to instantly change direction and go straight backwards.

The key to the "mystery" is actually hidden in the video, in particular the "missing" bullets. The first, sometimes second skillet causes the bullet to fragment into tiny pieces, and the distance between the skillets allows those fragment to spread out so that the impact to the next skillet is distributed over a much larger area. That's basically how so called Whipple Shields work that are used to protect spacecraft against hypervelocity micrometeoroid impacts at up to 18km/s (11 miles per second; about 50 times the speed of sound).
I think that you would have more luck penetrating the skillets if they were held firmly, as opposed to being allowed to fall backwards as they are struck. I think the movement is absorbing some of the force that could otherwise be penetrating the pans.
There are a lot of variables that will mess with your expectations. For instance the pans not being secured. It allows for the energy to be transferred into movement of the pan rather than into penetration. So thats why most of the rounds stopped at the second or third pan. The larger caliber combined with penetration specific design allows for the energy to be focused into penetration which was the point of the 5.56 round and those like it. Handguns are more for a defense while riffles for attack and going through walls, cars and humans. Any defense round will most likely flatten right away causing distribution of the energy over a wider area but slowing penetration. What would be interesting is securing the pans so they don't move at all then firing a Mosin Nagant 7.62x54mmR from about 50ft and see what result you get. Also, "Extreme Penetrator" was my nickname in college. 😏

the man needs to take a physics course. With the skillets not being fixed in position and allowed to fall over, there's a huge absorption of energy in each one that is hit. Also he needed to use a new skillet for each test for it to be valid. He's no mythbuster!
The idea that "not being fixed" makes a difference is not right as they were not fixed for the entire demonstration, however you are right about the using new pans for each test do to the impacts causing micro fractures in the pans weakening them for the next test.

Not if they're standing far enough back. Bullets can only ricochet if the angle isn't too tight. It would be impossible for the force of the bullet to instantly change direction and go straight backwards.
You can see the bullets fragmenting after penetrating, so i would be very worried about a few pieces coming back......essays are loco.
Terrible. Very poor comparison. Every time a pan is penetrated or hit it weakens it. You should have moved all the the penetrated pans as well as the ones where the bullet stopped to the very back and moved the untouched ones forward. This would be a far better comparison. Just sayin. 👍👍

Test could be a lot more accurate if skillets were not reused once damaged and all of them were at the same angle, not to mention shootin' distance.

On a more accurate note like many mention, do another video with the cast iron properly secure (no movement) & change the cast iron after each round as the integrity of the pan maybe compromise when it was shot before. The key to the "mystery" is actually hidden in the video, in particular the "missing" bullets. The first, sometimes second skillet causes the bullet to fragment into tiny pieces, and the distance between the skillets allows those fragment to spread out so that the impact to the next skillet is distributed over a much larger area. That's basically how so called Whipple Shields work that are used to protect spacecraft against hypervelocity micrometeoroid impacts at up to 18km/s (11 miles per second; about 50 times the speed of sound).

I think that you would have more luck penetrating the skillets if they were held firmly, as opposed to being allowed to fall backwards as they are struck. I think the movement is absorbing some of the force that could otherwise be penetrating the pans.

There are a lot of variables that will mess with your expectations. For instance the pans not being secured. It allows for the energy to be transferred into movement of the pan rather than into penetration. So thats why most of the rounds stopped at the second or third pan. The larger caliber combined with penetration specific design allows for the energy to be focused into penetration which was the point of the 5.56 round and those like it. Handguns are more for a defense while riffles for attack and going through walls, cars and humans.
Any defense round will most likely flatten right away causing distribution of the energy over a wider area but slowing penetration. What would be interesting is securing the pans so they don't move at all then firing a Mosin Nagant 7.62x54mmR from about 50ft and see what result you get. Also, "Extreme Penetrator" was my nickname in college. 😏
Also he should've replace the damaged pans for each bullet.

the man needs to take a physics course. With the skillets not being fixed in position and allowed to fall over, there's a huge absorption of energy in each one that is hit. Also he needed to use a new skillet for each test for it to be valid. He's no mythbuster!
The idea that "not being fixed" makes a difference is not right as they were not fixed for the entire demonstration, however you are right about the using new pans for each test do to the impacts causing micro fractures in the pans weakening them for the next test.
